TEAMWORK

PAUL KRUEGERPresident and CEO

Teamwork was the theme of this year’s National Make-A-Wish® conference in Scottsdale. All 61 chapters and the national staff came together to share information and learn from one another. As you might imagine, it was an inspiring week. Key to the success of Make-A-Wish is an amazing network of wonderful people across the country who help make sure every eligible child receives a heartfelt wish. Our most recent wishes are highlighted in this issue.

We granted 50 wishes this past fiscal year, down from the last two years. While we hope that means fewer sick kids, we know there are kids that we are missing. We need your help to get the word out about our mission and the referral process. We want to reach every child between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 who is facing a life-threatening – progressive, degenerative or malignant – condition. If you are unclear about how kids qualify or how the referral process works, please contact us or visit our website.

Granting wishes only happens because of teamwork. Our volunteers, donors and staff are essential to the process. This year we have been celebrating our 30th anniversary. Since 1984 we have granted more than 1,110 wishes! If you take into account the family members of the wish kids, Make-A-Wish has touched the lives of thousands of people in our state. It has been a fun year celebrating and reuniting with so many kids and families – all part of the Make-A-Wish family!

We enjoy this season of the year as several Make-A-Wish events will be taking place in different parts of the state. See our special Season of Wishes section for all of the opportunities. As you consider your year-end giving, please consider Make-A-Wish. We have more than 60 kids in the process of receiving a wish and the average cost of a wish is nearly $7,000.

Thank you for being a part of the Make-A-Wish team and for helping us to make wishes come true. We look forward to the next 30 years!

Enjoy this special time of the year and best wishes to you and your family in the year ahead.

Wish Perspective

Jordan, 18, of Watertown wished to meet Jon Schmidt and The Piano Guys, a wish that came true this past June when he and his family had the chance to travel from South Dakota to San Diego to go to a concert. Following Jordan’s wish, we had the chance to ask him about his wish and its impact on him.

Why did you choose your wish? I thoroughly enjoy every aspect of piano music and these people are absolutely gifted and inspire me. Their songs bring me peace and joy; they make we want to chase my dreams and be the best I can be.

What were your favorite moments of your wish experience?Having my entire family there to support me, after everything we all have been through, was definitely icing on a very delicious cake. But the cake itself had to be when some of the most amazing musicians asked me to

play with them. They made me feel like I belonged in the musical world. Tears always fill my eyes just remembering those ever-so-precious moments. I jammed and improvised a song with incredibly talented musicians. The Piano Guys truly made my heart grow wings and soar to places that I could never imagine.

What do you want to say to those who made your wish possible? There are not enough words in the human vocabulary to express the gratitude in my heart. Your mission is breathtakingly beautiful. Like the story The Starfish Thrower, you have truly made a difference and have given me the world.

Jordan is now a freshman at South Dakota State University. His wish was adopted by Dacotah Bank, Watertown.

Participation in Kids For Wish Kids® will bring Make-A-Wish South Dakota one step closer to the goal of fulfilling wishes for every child with a life-threatening medical condition. Kids For Wish Kids puts kids in charge. They take the lead to brainstorm fundraising ideas, develop plans of action and then watch their ideas come to life. Kids across South Dakota raise money through their schools, teams, churches, organizations, or on their own, all to help make wishes come true for other kids. We are grateful to the following groups and individuals who have participated in recent months.

Wheels For Wishes Donate your car, truck, motorcycle, boat or RV today and help make a South Dakota child’s wish come true. Wheels For Wishes is an easy way to donate your used vehicle, running or not, and avoid the hassle of selling it yourself. Wheels For Wishes will sell your vehicle, provide you the necessary tax information and send the proceeds to our chapter. Call 855.458.9474 or visit southdakota.wheelsforwishes.org for more information. Since Make-A-Wish started the program in 2011, more than 330 vehicles have been donated.

Wish kids and brothers Andrew, Jacob and Tyler raised money for Make-A-Wish by holding a lemonade stand in their hometown of Sisseton. The boys wanted to give back to help other kids’ wishes come true. While at the office in Sioux Falls, they found their names on the stars in the wish room. A full article about their effort from the Watertown Daily Opinion is on our website at southdakota.wish.org.

Wish Kid Gabriel Broghammer requested donations to Make-A-Wish instead of gifts for his 8th birthday party, which included a private showing of Star Wars on the big screen. He was surprised by a couple of special guests at his party!

WALK FOR WISHES IN RAPID CITY EXCEEDS GOAL

Thanks to the generous support of our volunteers, planning committee members, participants and sponsors, the second annual Walk For Wishes in Rapid City raised just more than $69,000 to help grant wishes to children in South Dakota. Participants were entertained by Emily Lloyd and Chasynn Canaan and Magic Mark worked the crowd with his incredible illusions. Food was graciously donated by Enigma (The Adoba Eco Hotel) and Burger King. More than $2,000 in incentives and prizes were awarded to our top fundraisers – and the competition was fierce! Special recognition was given to Wish Kid Champions - our wish kids that had recruited a team of ten or more of their family and friends to walk with them.

Throughout the year we have been celebrating our milestone 30th anniversary. What started as granting six wishes a year in 1984 to now more than 50 wishes each year, with the highest number being 74 in recent years, Make-A-Wish South Dakota has touched the lives of thousands of kids and families in every part of the state. At celebration events in Rapid City, Watertown, Aberdeen and Sioux Falls this summer we celebrated the kids and families we have served and looked forward to continuing to make every eligible child’s wish come true. As long as there are kids facing life-threatening medical conditions Make-A-Wish is committed to providing them hope, strength and joy during a very difficult time. As part of this celebration, we also saluted our staff, Board of Directors, donors and volunteers, who without their time and treasures, wishes would not come true. Read more about our 30th anniversary and see a timeline of our chapter at southdakota.wish.org.

Page 22: Wishful Thinking Fall/Winter 2014

Make-A-Wish® South Dakota would like to invite you to participate in the 2014 Macy’s Believe campaign! Or, believers of all ages can create and send a letter online at www.macys.com/believe. For each letter received, Macy’s will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish, up to 1 million dollars, to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

You can deliver the letters to the Macy’s store in the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls or mail them to our chapter through Christmas. We would love to know your school is participating. Please send an email to [email protected] with your school name. You may also include pictures of kids writing letters or delivering them to the store/post office. We will post the pictures on our Facebook page and website.

Friday, December 12 is National Believe Day across the country. There will be a special announcement in early December, so be watching our website and Facebook page for that. We also hope to recognize a South Dakota wish that day.
