Transformation was the theme of the recent National Make-A-Wish® conference in scottsdale, AZ. We had the opportunity to learn from and network with 500 Make-A-Wish chapter and national staff, volunteers and board members. We also heard from wish kids and their families about the impact of their wishes on their lives. the stories were powerful, just like the stories of our wish kids in south Dakota. More and more we are realizing that a wish is much more than a trip or an item or an experience. A wish is part of the journey back to better and improved health. for kids with a less positive diagnosis, a wish is a bright spot during a very difficult time. We believe wishes are a necessity for kids fighting a life-threatening medical condition.

in scottsdale, we received the Benchmarks of Excellence Award, recognition for our overall performance this past year. the congratulations certainly goes to everyone involved, as our chapter would not be successful without the help of our volunteers, donors and friends, board and staff.

As we look to 2014 we will be celebrating our 30th anniversary as a chapter. We will reflect on the transformation of our organization over the last three decades and look ahead to the future of how we will continue to transform our organization for the changes and challenges ahead. We look forward to celebrating with you throughout the year!

We continue to see record numbers of referrals and have budgeted for the most wishes ever this coming year. We encourage you, as you consider your year-end giving, and throughout the year, to continue to support Make-A-Wish as you are able. Whether it is a cash gift, adopting a wish, holding a fundraiser or including Make-A-Wish south Dakota in your estate plan, together, we will continue to grant every eligible child’s wish in south Dakota.

thank you for your commitment to our important mission. enjoy this special season of the year.

don’t know if i can even put into words what our Make-A-Wish trip meant to our family, but i am going to give it my best shot.

i remember the day that Roxanne called to let me know that Hunter’s wish would be granted and that he was going to Walt Disney World. it was bittersweet words for me…the acknowledgement that my son “qualified” for

a wish and then the excitement of the fact that he was going to meet Mickey Mouse, the one thing that we knew Hunter would want to see.

Hunter has endured more in his 11 years of life than any one of us will endure in our lifetime and to be told that he will get one week of his life where he can do anything he wants with no worries of the everyday “stuff” that had been going on, we were beyond happiness.

While on our trip we experienced so many “firsts” with Hunter that we never thought we were going to get. the smile on his face when he splashed us all while standing in the ocean,

to the screams of delight when he saw santa and Mickey Mouse. Words cannot describe our emotions but just know that they are things that none of us will ever forget.

Hunter’s time with us is limited and Make-A-Wish gave us all a week that we didn’t have to think about that. it gave us the memories to carry on and remember when things aren’t always so great, and it helped us give things to Hunter we never thought we were going to be able to do.

Make-A-Wish made sure that everything was taken care of, they made us feel so special, from the first phone call to the last limo ride home from the airport.

thank you to Make-A-Wish and our Adopt-A-Wish partners W.W. tire of Pierre. Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined what a wish would mean to Hunter and our family!

the 18th Annual Hot Harley Nights had all of the ingredients that this regional tradition has become: hot temperatures, thousands of Harley-Davidsons and many, many generous friends. Volunteer receiVes award froM wells fargo it was no surprise to the Make-A-Wish team when volunteer Amy Aulner called with the good news that she had received an award for volunteering in the community. Aulner volunteers for Make-A-Wish as a wish granter, team lead and event volunteer. she also helps recruit and lead volunteers each year from Wells fargo to help at Hot Harley Nights. the surprise was that the award, given on a regional level, included a $5,000 gift from her employer, Wells fargo, which Amy could designate to her favorite charity! We look forward to granting a wish on behalf of Wells fargo and in Amy’s honor. congratulations, Amy!

names: Amy Aulnerhometown: sioux Falls

about amy I work for Wells Fargo Education Financial services. In addition to volunteering for make-A-Wish, I volunteer in the community with different organizations as well.

your connection with Make-a-wish? I am a wish granter and an event volunteer.

how long have you been a volunteer? I have been a volunteer for about 4 or 5 years now.

why do you volunteer for Make-a-wish? I started volunteering for make-A-Wish because of my mom who has been a volunteer for quite a few years now. I continue to volunteer for make-A-Wish because I truly believe in the mission. The feeling I get from being part of something great that touches so many lives is indescribable. I have an overwhelming sense of compassion for these kids who are so tough, tougher than any adult I know.

tell us about a memorable wish experience: All of them are memorable in different ways, however the one that stands out in my mind that really had an effect on me was Luke’s wish. I met Luke right after he was diagnosed. Luke was considered a rush wish so we met with the family at the make-A-Wish office after one of his appointments. The family had barely had time to digest their son’s diagnosis so they hadn’t really thought of wishes. After sitting down with them we found out how much Luke enjoyed camping with his family. so for Luke’s wish they had a limo pick him and some friends up from school & take them around sioux Falls. meanwhile we were at Luke’s house in hurley setting up for Luke’s camping wish. Luke was surprised with a new camper, a fire pit that we roasted marshmallows in, a pizza party, and all of his friends & family were there to celebrate with him.

if you could encourage someone who is thinking about volunteering for Make-a-wish, what would you tell them? I would tell them that make-A-Wish changed my life and it could change theirs as well. you meet these amazing kids that show you no matter what life throws at you, you keep fighting!

Make-a-wish reMeMbers dorisa youngAll of our wish kids touch our lives and when they pass away, we are saddened. this summer we said goodbye to Dorisa young of Brandon, who died at the age of 37, after a long, painful battle with a rare disease called Neurofibromatosis type ii. she was diagnosed at the age of 11 and enjoyed her wish to go to Walt Disney World in 1993. told originally by doctors that she would not live to be 18, and having survived 55 surgeries, instead of asking “Why me, God?” Dorisa asked “Why not?” Dorisa touched the lives of many, especially the folks involved with the Northern Bull Riding tour. Dorisa was a regular at the event for years and was an inspiration to all. A cowgirl at heart, Dorisa looked forward to the finals in sioux falls each year, where she had the chance to see all of her fans that were a part of her life for so many years. Dorisa’s family designated memorials to Make-A-Wish and plan to adopt a wish in her honor. thanks, Dorisa, for your faithful determination and fight. you are missed.
