Dear Friends,

It’s a very exciting time at Harcum! We started Fall 2009 with our highest enrollmentin the past twenty-five years with 1,152 students. Of that total, 451 are new students. This record increase is a testament to the relevancy of career preparatory educationalprograms in this challenging economy.

We continue to add programs with Pre-Nursing and Occupational Therapy Assisting debuting this Fall.Overseeing the quality and development of our curricula is Julia Ingersoll, newly appointedVice Presidentof Academic Affairs & Legal Affairs and Dr. Donna Parker, recently hired as AssociateVice President ofAcademic Affairs.

One of our major areas of focus is scholarships. There is a great need among current and prospectivestudents who hope to realize their educational goal at Harcum College during a time of scarce financialresources. Students struggle with expenses as lending has diminished considerably.Among those specialneeds is the ability of a student to live on campus.Although we have the capacity, many students can’tmake it work financially. These are usually the very students who would benefit greatly by being in a stableresidential environment. This is an area where alumni can make a huge difference.Your contributions to theHarcum Fund earmarked for scholarships would help immeasurably.

It is my belief that every student who studies at Harcum College should have some exposure to the finearts. Learning through the arts is not only part of our history, it has proven to support greater academicachievement.Whether it is visual arts, music, dance, or drama individual differences in culture, educationalbackground, and ability are often melded through this exposure. Our commitment to the arts includescontinued efforts to renovate The Little Theatre and Richter Hall. Eventually, we will celebrate the arts,in varying forms, from one end of the campus to the other. Sachi Mallach, who has joined Harcum asVice President of College Advancement, will be spearheading our efforts to obtain the resources torealize these aspirations.

The next few pages celebrate Homecoming 2009. Despite an onslaught by a cold and dreary nor’easter,it was a busy and fun-filled day with record attendance—a craft fair in Klein Hall, family activities in thestudent lounge, volleyball and basketball in the gym were all heavily attended. There was also an alumni teaat the President’s House in the afternoon where alumni achievement was recognized and members of theClass of 1959 received their golden bear pins in honor of their 50th reunion. It was also the debut ofHatcher, the Harcum bear. You’ll love him.

The following pages will update you on all that is happening here at Harcum College. It’s important to methat you get involved and keep in touch. We’re a relatively small family but we have great things to celebratetogether. The MyHarcum.com website is a great way to connect with your classmates and friends. There arealways opportunities for you to continue your relationship with the Harcum family—mentoring students, joining the alumni board or sharing your ideas. I particularly enjoy hearing from you and knowing aboutyour journey.

Best regards,

Jon Jay DeTemple, Ph.D.

s a new member of Harcum’s team, I’dlike to introduce myself. I’m thrilled tobe part of your college and hope to havethe opportunity to meet you.Harcum isa unique place and, like many things in

life, its challenges are helping to make itstronger. The College has transformed itselfin some fundamental ways since EdithHarcum established the school in 1915.Whathas been interesting to me is that while stu-dents’ experiences at Harcum have variedfrom decade to decade, the Harcum alum-ni with whom I have met share some inter-esting traits.Regardless of when they graduated or

from what program, Harcum alumni areachievers. To use an expression from the1950s,Harcum“girls”become powerful, spir-ited,determined Harcum women. (The menseem to be on the same path.) In my 13 years

in development, I have never met so manyalumni who have founded or are runningtheir own businesses. They are active con-tributors to their professions, their families, their religious congregations and commu-nities.They are not afraid to take risks torealize their dreams.

It’s my hope that more Harcum alumniwill channel that energy and enthusiasm backinto their alma mater.Unlike larger institu-tions, Harcum is a place where individualcontributions of time, expertise and dollarsmake a real and immediate impact. In the brief time I’ve been at Harcum, I

can see that once our alumni put their mindsto something, they achieve it.Think of thedifference we can make at Harcum by work-ing together!”Please let me know your thoughts

and feedback. I encourage you to reachme direct ly at 610-526-6005 or [email protected].

ond in the KlingStubbins 7-hour“charrette”competiton.Alexis was among 65 area designstudents from local Colleges to compete, including several 4 year institutions. The chal-lenge of the competition was to quicklydevelop a basic design scheme for an inter-active restaurant and to present the solutionin a clear organized manner. The designproblem was to create a dining experiencewhich will allow customers to become moreinvolved in the many processes—from prepa-ration to presentation—surrounding the cre-ation of a meal. The venue will also incor-

porate a demonstration kitchen and appro-priate technology to allow the productionof 30 minute television segments to show-case the chef ’s cuisine. The space will be partrestaurant, part cooking school, and partdemonstration kitchen.

A Family Affairby Suzanne CotterBrenda Mason started a family trend

when she returned to school in 2004 at theage of 50.With a home to maintain and aneducation to cultivate, she knew she need-ed a school that was invested in her success.“I had been in and out of community

colleges while my children were growingup,” explains Mason,“but I was looking foran academic experience that would support, encourage and empower my educationalgrowth and development.”When Ms. Mason came to Harcum in

the fall of ‘04, this support was exactly whatshe found.“The faculty and staff at Harcum mod-

eled a spirit of dedication, professionalismand limitless possibilities,” she remembers;“from the first day I set foot on campus, Iwas supported, challenged and empoweredto pursue the educational journey I’ve heldin my heart since graduating from highschool in 1971.”One professor’s encouraging words chal-

lenged Ms.Mason to“let my age work as anadvantage instead of a handicap,” she recalls.Immersing herself in the college experience, she participated in several departments acrosscampus; she served as a peer mentor, tutorand counselor, took an Internship at the BrynMawr Health System, and even participat-ed in the yearbook committee during hersenior year. All the while,Mason found timeto study, relax and occasionally enjoy a pic-nic lunch at Harcum’s serene suburban cam-pus.

College of Vet Surgeon (RCVS). I have alsoexamined and assessed competency for theRCVS, lectured, published, trained scores ofnurses and vet interns, and work as an ambu-latory nurse for our local racing yards andstud farms. Last year I became the presidentof the national representative body-TheBritish Veterinary Nursing Association. Quitean accomplishment for a vet tech studentfrom Pennsylvania who was told, by theHarcum course director at the time, that acareer change should be considered. It wasfelt that I did not have the ability to passexams or grasp the content of the syllabus(I graduated with honors).

I hope I do not come across as bragging, that is not my intention. What I want toconvey to Harcum vet tech students is to notgive up if you truly feel committed to yourchosen field of study. We do not all thrive ina classroom environment and many of usprefer hands-on instruction alongside theory.I could have easily quit and ended up neverleaving my comfort zone if it weren’t for mydesire to see veterinary nursing progress.
