It looks like summer’s heat is waning, and I’m looking forward to cooler nights and days. The days are getting short enough that I actually realized it was getting dark a little earlier… around 8 PM…not real early but just noticeable. There are other clues that the growing
nally providing their harvest. Of course sweet corn comes to mind and tomatoes, of course. Speaking of sweet corn, I went to my favorite farm stand to get some to prepare for some guests last weekend. When I walked up to the area where they normally have the corn for sale, there was none to be seen. I was stunned. I mean this is the place where I have been buying corn for years…they always have corn and usually the best because it is so fresh. I was disappointed but I went inside their main building since I also need a fruit pie. There,
reminder of why I make the drive there to buy corn when there are closer places to buy corn. I wish I could tell you the name of the place but it wouldn’t be fair to all the other farm stands
and keep the corn as fresh as possible. To give you an idea of what a fanatic I am about sweet corn, I brought that corn home and put it in a cooler and covered it with ice until it was time to cook it. Man, was that some good corn!
It is hard to imagine, after these lovely months of enjoying the outdoors and our gardens, that it will shortly be time for the growing season to end. Even as they say farewell to the waning season, real gardeners are working away on projects to make next year’s growing season even better than the one just passing. There are bulbs to plant, perennials to divide and shrubs that might need to be relocated.
Of course, the warm days and cool nights of late summer and early fall make it second only
This is the time of year I like to look for bargains as the garden centers discount shrubs and perennials to move them out before winter. Often the plants I get during these fall sales don’t look like much with the leaves falling off as they go into dormancy, but as long as the roots and stems are in good shape, I’m willing to take a chance. Sometimes the bargains are so good that I buy plants that I have no plan for but the price is so good that I can’t pass them up. These plants will often have to spend the winter in their pots while I come up with a plan
It’s all a question of knowing how to bring them through the harsh winter ahead.
First, scout out a sheltered location. We know that our prevailing wind comes from the west and north. The east facing wall of a garage, shed or even the house is a great spot. The building will block the cold, dry air that can dehydrate our wintering plants. I’ve got a 4’ high retaining wall on the western side of my vegetable garden that works well for this
gains into. If I happen to have a tree that is so tall that it sticks out above the wall, I’ll tip it on its side so the branches are below the top of the wall, protected from the wind. Then I’ll
my treasures into complete dormancy, I’ll keep an eye out that they don’t dry out, but with
meal, of course). So now, even though I take advantage of the fall planting season as much as I can, I know I can keep any leftovers safe through winter even if I run short of time this fall. Thanks for the read.

DID YOU KNOW?Many major auto manufacturers provide bumper-to-bumper factory warranties that expire once a car is threeyears old or exceeds 36,000 miles, and such milestonesare important figures for preowned vehicle shoppers toconsider before buying their next preowned vehicle. Whenbuying a car that's more than three years old or one thathas close to or more than 36,000 miles on its odometer, prospective buyers should ask for the vehicle's mainte-nance records before making a purchase. Since many ve-hicles need their first significant servicing somewherearound 40,000 miles, it's important for preowned vehiclebuyers to know what they're buying and just how soonthey might be on the hook for repairs after buying a vehi-cle. Buyers should avoid purchasing any vehicles withsuspect maintenance histories and may even be able tocite anticipated maintenance when negotiating the priceof the vehicle.
