Whetman Pinks
802 3
We are proud to celebrate the 80th year of Whetman Pinks. The company was bought as a going concern in 1936, a traditional market garden. Since that time it has developed and grown into the world recognised brand we know today, as a result of constant innovation and investment. We invite you to browse our collection of Pinks for 2016. We would also like to thank all our customers, some of whom we have been privileged to serve for more than 30 years, for their continued loyalty. We will continue striving to exceed your expectations of quality and service.
Change is in the air... Carolyn Bourne joined
Whetman Pinks in 1979. It has been her aim for some years to develop a suitable succession plan in order for the business she has helped create continue. As is the case with so many families in the horticulture and agriculture industry today, the younger generation have other career interests. So after 36 years at the helm, it has been a true pleasure for her to hand over the watering can to Ed and Fiona Marley in Whetman Pinks’ 80th year of trading. Carolyn still retains a great interest in the business but is no longer involved in the day to day running. She remains very much a supporting member of the team. Perhaps she may have some time cultivating Houndspool garden, spending more time with her husband and family and catching up on all those things that there were never time to do before.
Ed, Fiona and Jo Strickland are excited and proud to be taking the Whetman brand forwards. We might not make the next 80 years, but certainly intend to build on the tremendous work Carolyn and the team have achieved to date! With further innovation and investment, together with Carolyn’s wisdom and experience, we look forward to continuing to delight you with world class genetics and wonderful young plant quality.

BREEDING FOR THE FUTURE
We allow about 8 years for the selection process to be completed before introducing a new plant variety. During this time it will be tested for its hardiness, repeat flowering qualities, good vegetative growth, fragrance, health and vigour and as an overall good plant for the grower as well as the consumer.
We listen to you, our customers and always endeavour to meet the highest standards of plant health, cutting and young plant quality. The mother stock is tested twice yearly and inspected by FERA on a monthly basis. Pests and diseases are controlled using integrated pest management.
Our aim is to deliver the highest quality of service you could wish for. with advice given willingly and freely. Our success in achieving this contributes to your success.
We are committed to working closely with you to achieve superb results with your crop of Pinks

NEW FOR THE 2016 MARKET
WORLD FIRST!
It has taken our Breeder Laetitia Moucheboeuf7 years to develop the first varieties in this unique range of perennial Garden Pinks, with more on their way! Whetman Cocktails® are strikingly different and have caused a stir wherever they have been shown, creating a massive industry appeal with their contemporary look.
Their enormous single flowers are borne on graceful stems, with a flowering height outdoors of around 30cm. They are repeat flowering, easy to cultivate, fragrant and with the hardiness one has come to expect from the Whetman breeding programme. Rooted cuttings of all varieties are available for immediate delivery. Follow the production programme as for Garden Pinks.
The range has already received awards and accolades: Tequila Sunrise was shortlisted for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2015 Plant of the Year and others in the range received top awards at the HTA National Plant Show 2015.

Full cultural instructions are included with each order and we are pleased to help with all aspects of crop production.
Anemone ‘Jerusalem’ Anemone ‘Galilee’
Ranunculus ‘Pauline’ Ranunculus ‘Friandine’
Whetman Pinks are the sole UK distributor of these superb strains of florist quality Anemones from Israel and Ranunculus from France, both achieving excellent flower quality, vase life and stem length. Expensive but justified. Please see Price List for further details.
Hybrid AnemonesPlant corms in pots or open ground, under cover and with frost protection, from August through to October for cropping November to March. Three series:Meron - EarlyGalilee - mid season pastelJerusalem - mid season main cropRanunculus
The popularity of this brightly coloured Spring flower grows year on year providing impact at a time when few other flowers have such rich colours. The cut flower commands high prices because of their excellent quality and high yield.Pre-germinated or dry claws are planted 25cm apart in September/October for flowering March/April under cold glass or polythene structures. Colours include red, white, rose and gold and they can be grown without heat. The mix is virtually 100% double. Ranunculus are relatively hungry and trouble free but need regular spraying to prevent mildew. When buying mixed Anemone corms the percentages of colours included can vary. We suggest buying single colours and mixing yourself to avoid a possible imbalance. Please note: Anemones and Ranunculus are sold in multiples of 1000.
They are not the ‘poor man’s Carnation’ ...we now venture to suggest that Carnations have become the ‘poor man’s Pink’!
It may surprise you to know that 25 years ago 80% of our output was to commercial cut flower growers. How times have changed. British grown summer flowers are once again the hot topic of the day.
We have a tremendous wealth of experience growing Pinks for cut flower. They areeconomical to produce requiring no heat, staking or tying, can be grown under glass, polythene or Spanish tunnels, and providing blooms for a minimum of 5 months of the year. Modern demands are for a bloom that has a good vase life and can deliver that little extra something. Pinks easily satisfy that requirement with their gorgeous fragrance.
We are pleased to be able to give you advice on all aspects of growing the crop - from selection of suitable varieties, growing structures, cultivation - to post harvest treatments and their wide range of marketing opportunities.
