What they stand for…The stated purpose of the SBS as per the original charter, contained in Section six of the Special Broadcasting Services Act 1991 is:

To provide multilingual and multicultural radio and television services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia's multicultural society (cited in SBS Corporation, 2011).

SBS transitions Online!As the digital realm and Internet commerce continue to grow we have seen many traditionally offline businesses and organisations transition to an online marketplace. This integration has seen new business models emerge online as a result and the birth of new media.

SBS is one such business and new media that has been somewhat dictated to by user behaviour to offer much of their content online and integrate other Web 2.0 technologies into their strategy such as Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and Blogs. They have also incorporated important Internet commerce principals such as a shop, advertising and subscriptions.

What kind of resources do SBS invest in their online platforms?

Appendix 4

Page 13: Who are SBS.doc

SBS Online BudgetSBS do not currently have a specific online budget in their business plan (Wong, 2011). In addition SBS still adhere to traditional charter values which were written before the introduction of Internet commerce. Thus far SBS Online have relied on other sections of the SBS budget for funding.

In the past SBS has relied less on advertising revenue than its commercial counterparts and is restricted to five minutes of advertising per every hour of broadcasting (SBS Corporate, 2011). The online model presents them with an opportunity to increase use of advertising. One would imagine that as the online world continues to grow, SBS will revaluate its current budget allocations and model.

Where to from here?Whilst we do not know the

long term implications for broadcasting services such as SBS in the world of Internet commerce;

We do know that Internet commerce isn’t going anywhere anytime soon (Reilly, 2001). Companies such as SBS will need to invest more resources to continue to create wealth, value and information sharing online.
