Edison White Paper: Business Value of EVA to 3PAR Page 1

Executive Summary

This white paper addresses HP EVA Storage users who face tradeoffs between

performance and scalability. The paper demonstrates how HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage

provides best-in-class efficiency and simplicity through a more advanced mesh

architecture with system wide striping. As data centers accommodate an explosion of

new data types and data, 3PAR StoreServ is the only platform that offers the

performance required to double virtual machine (VM) density on physical servers, and

can scale capacity automatically.

Increasingly, storage technologies and architectures that served an organization well for

the past decade have come up against limitations in scale and efficiency. Today’s data-

centric and fast changing environments lead to unpredictable workloads. The rapidly

evolving IT world blurs the lines between internal and external workloads, making

capacity requirements and workload demands difficult to forecast accurately.

In larger enterprises, unpredictable application workloads result from highly

virtualized, cloud-ready, and IT as a Service (ITaaS) environments. Capacity growth and

workload demands become indeterminate, resistant to forecast. Peaks and troughs occur

without warning. Relying on legacy storage infrastructures that were never built for

these types of workloads can lead to performance bottlenecks, scalability issues, and

unwelcome complexity.

With legacy storage, including HP EVA Storage, the solution for continually growing

workloads is to "scale up" by adding more hardware at more cost. Even though EVA has

been a mainstay for over a decade, it was not designed for next-gen workloads.

EVA storage offers the solid storage efficiency of a virtualized single-array to single-

array architecture model. However, like all dual-controller architectures, EVA does not

scale linearly, often forcing a tradeoff between performance and capacity. The older

architecture’s advantages break down when a data center is managing hundreds of

virtual servers. Meanwhile, more physical arrays mean more floor space, energy use,

hardware, and software maintenance, while adding to complexity data management. All

this increases capital and operating expenses (CAPEX and OPEX).

As a result, many have begun implementing a future-ready solution like HP 3PAR

StoreServ Storage. In contrast to the EVA, 3PAR StoreServ was designed to provide cost-

effective, single-system scalability from the ground up. 3PAR StoreServ relies on a

cache-coherent, multi-node, clustered implementation. It offers one architecture and a

single software stack, from midrange to high-end. With it, HP delivers performance,

scalability, and Tier 1 resiliency, along with unique technology benefits unavailable from

legacy storage.

3PAR StoreServ’s advanced capabilities are:

High capacity utilization and high performance levels are delivered simultaneously,

thanks to its system-wide striping and highly granular virtualization capabilities.

Industry-leading thin technologies, based on the HP 3PAR Gen4 Thin Built In ASIC,

allow organizations to “start thin, get thin, and stay thin.”

Simple and automated management eliminates repetitive, error-prone manual

administrative tasks.

Storage tiering technologies requiring no user intervention balance cost and

performance, meeting service-level requirements at the lowest cost, while also

mitigating risk.

Nondisruptive data mobility across 3PAR StoreServ Storage ensures at-will load-

balancing, seamless technology refresh, and reduced asset lifecycle-management

costs.

Simple and easy EVA to 3PAR StoreServ data migration using familiar Command

View management tools.

EVA customers interested in upgrading their current storage to 3PAR StoreServ

typically experience the following benefits:

Simplicity

Reduce administration time by as much as 90 percent.

Easy migration from EVA to 3PAR StoreServ reduces complexity and saves

CAPEX on a technology refresh.

Performance

Process mission-critical workloads as much as five times faster.

Support mixed workloads to achieve higher service levels in the face of

unpredictable and changing demands.

Triple backup speed without impacting performance.

Efficiency

Slash storage capacity requirements by 50 percent or more (guaranteed by HP).

Cut SAN, energy, and floor space requirements by up to 75 percent.

Page 6: White Paper - HP® Official Site | Laptop Computers, Desktops

Edison White Paper: Business Value of EVA to 3PAR Page 3

Reduce storage equipment costs as much as 30 percent by migrating data to the

most efficient cost/performance resources without manual intervention.

Double Virtual Machine density on existing physical servers with no

performance tradeoffs. The boost in server virtualization ROI is guaranteed by

HP.

Whether an upgrade involves migration of a single EVA to 3PAR StoreServ Storage or

multiple EVAs into a single 3PAR StoreServ array, the savings are significant. Applying

standardized, statistic-informed TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) calculators to a move

from EVA to 3PAR StoreServ Storage, Edison arrived at 5-year cumulative savings for

small, medium, and large storage environments.

Small Medium Large

Starting raw capacity (TBs) 57.6 194.4 583.2

5-Year cumulative savings for

power, cooling, and rack space $164,821 $705,461 $214,6559

5-Year cumulative Management

Savings $131,250 $225,000 $450,000

5-Year cumulative total $296,070 $930,461 $2,596,558

3PAR StoreServ Storage Represents the Next Step in

Modernizing Data Center Storage

The last major generational phase in IT storage took place 15-20 years ago, with the

advent of Storage Area Networks. SANs allowed storage capacity to be pooled

independently of any direct attachment to a specific hardware server system. Most

storage systems available today are designed for the IT requirements of that time.

Today, many data centers are poised on the brink of a sea change. Converged

ecosystems, end-to-end virtualized infrastructures within ITaaS-driven cloud

environments, and Big Data demand truly different storage solutions. 3PAR StoreServ

has been designed from the ground up for these next-gen workloads. Its distinct

architectural advantages, thin hardware capabilities, uncompromised availability, and

superior performance revolutionize storage, making it ideal for modern data centers.

HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage Improves on EVA Strengths and Addresses

EVA Challenges

HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage is the natural next step when updating an existing HP EVA

Storage-based data center.

Architecture

HP EVA is based on a dual-controller architecture, which limits its scalability to 450

drives, with system performance constraints. 3PAR StoreServ Storage allows linear

performance scaling by introducing additional nodes. Its seemingly limitless scalability

can offer a 180 percent increased scalability over EVA, providing a single standardized

technology platform with a single management suite, for anywhere from eight to 1,920

HDDs, and two to eight controllers.

HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage features a unique Mesh-Active controller design as part of

an architecture purpose-built for single-system scalability through a cache-coherent,

multi-node, clustered implementation. Unlike legacy “active-active” controller

architectures like the EVA—where each volume is active on only a single controller—

this Mesh-Active design allows each volume to be active on every mesh controller in the

system. This design delivers robust, load-balanced performance and greater headroom

for cost effective scalability.

HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage features fourth-generation HP 3PAR Thin Built-In ASICs in

each clustered Controller Node. This gives HP 3PAR StoreServ the power to remove

allocated but unused space without impacting performance—not the case with legacy

storage. For example, EMC recommends that LUNS requiring high performance should

not be thin provisioned. HP 3PAR StoreServ does not face the same performance issues

as with EMC. Every LUN can be “thinned” regardless of performance, because the

capability is built into the HP 3PAR StoreServ ASIC, which also delivers mixed

workload support to alleviate performance concerns and cut traditional array costs.

Transaction- and throughput-intensive workloads run on the same storage resources

without contention, cutting array purchases in half.

Another considerable architectural advantage for 3PAR StoreServ is system-wide data

striping, where data writes are striped widely across all storage system resources

(controllers, cache, disks, and loops). This is critical in highly virtualized environments

since most storage cannot keep up with VM requests. With 3PAR StoreServ’s system’s

performance advantages, organizations can place more VMs on the physical servers in

an existing VMware vSphere environment, without compromising performance or

reliability. Higher VM density means greater consolidation and accelerated server

virtualization ROI. In fact, HP is so confident they can double VM density on physical

Page 8: White Paper - HP® Official Site | Laptop Computers, Desktops

Edison White Paper: Business Value of EVA to 3PAR Page 5

servers with HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage, they guarantee it through the HP Get Virtual

Guarantee program.

In summary, HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage takes the virtualized architecture of EVA

Storage to the next level. It transcends what could be achieved by merely replacing

nodes with more powerful versions or adding ever more arrays and dealing with the

resultant management complexity and maintenance costs.

Efficiency

3PAR StoreServ Storage includes advanced features that vastly increase efficiency, such

as thin technology that goes far beyond standard thin provisioning, and policy driven

storage tiering requiring no user intervention.

Advanced Thin Technologies – to start thin, get thin, and stay thin

HP 3PAR thin technologies provide superior thin provisioning functionality that enables

organizations to meet their performance and service level objectives with at least 50

percent fewer disks. An organization saves on the cost of a storage technology refresh.

Then, it maximizes storage ROI over time by keeping incremental purchases,

administration, and operating costs to a minimum. In fact, the HP Get Thin Guarantee

promises new HP 3PAR StoreServ customers a minimum 50 percent reduction in

capacity requirements by replacing legacy storage.

HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage makes these savings possible by offering the industry’s

most comprehensive approach to thin storage. This approach is built on thin

technologies that combine both software and hardware innovations unique to HP 3PAR

StoreServ Storage. With these innovations in place your organization can not only start

thin, but get thin and stay thin. When combined with the HP 3PAR Gen4 ASIC, HP

3PAR StoreServ Storage has the power to remove allocated but unused space without

impacting performance.

Start Thin: HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning Software

3PAR StoreServ Storage cuts storage area network (SAN) costs, floor space

requirements, and energy expenses by up to 50 percent. It does away with

dedicating resources for each application or service level, and eliminates paying to

house, power, and cool disks that may never be needed.

Get Thin: HP 3PAR Thin Conversion Software

HP 3PAR leverages the Thin Built In ASIC to eliminate up to 50 percent of legacy

capacity by allowing the simple and rapid conversion of fully provisioned storage to

Page 9: White Paper - HP® Official Site | Laptop Computers, Desktops

Edison White Paper: Business Value of EVA to 3PAR Page 6

thin provisioned storage. EVA customers can take advantage through the simple and

rapid conversion of inefficient, “fat” volumes on EVA Storage to more efficient,

higher-utilization “thin” volumes on the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage.

Stay Thin: HP 3PAR Thin Persistence and Thin Copy Reclamation Software

3PAR Thin Persistence and Thin Copy Reclamation software claims space from

deleted volumes so storage stays thin over time—simply, quickly, and without

disruption. It supports both the Oracle ASRU (ASM Storage Reclamation Utility) for

eliminating stranded capacity within Oracle databases, and the Symantec Thin

Reclamation API allowing a host file system to communicate intelligently with the

array, to reclaim space associated with file deletions.

Policy Driven Tiering – to simply and efficiently deliver the right QoS

3PAR handles key storage functions—provisioning, change management, and tiering—

in a self-regulating manner without requiring administrator intervention. The result is

highly reliable, non-disruptive, tiered storage that delivers the right QoS to the right

data at the right time, so you can meet service level targets for up to 30 percent less.

Adaptive Optimization

HP 3PAR Adaptive Optimization Software lets storage administrators move

volumes to different RAID levels and/or drive types, and also to redistribute

volumes after adding additional drives to an array. It operates on the principle of I/O

access density. For most applications, a very small amount of the total user data

receives most of the I/O accesses. By configuring only the very active data blocks on

Tier 0 storage and the rest of their application data on SAS or midline SAS storage,

administrators who have configured a HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system with a

small number of solid state disks (SSDs) can deliver higher performance at lower

cost than by using traditional storage platforms.

Dynamic Optimization

HP 3PAR Dynamic Optimization Software also operates on the principle of I/O

access density. By configuring only the most active data blocks on Tier 0 storage and

the rest of their application data on SAS or midline SAS storage, administrators

using the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system configured with a small number of

solid state disks (SSDs) can deliver higher performance at lower cost than by using

traditional storage platforms

HP 3PAR Dynamic Optimization realigns application requirements with data QoS

levels on demand by nondisruptively redistributing application volumes across tiers.

Page 10: White Paper - HP® Official Site | Laptop Computers, Desktops

Edison White Paper: Business Value of EVA to 3PAR Page 7

Dynamic Optimization analyzes how volumes use physical disks, and automatically

makes intelligent, nondisruptive adjustments to help ensure optimal volume

performance and capacity utilization.

Management

EVA’s Command View is well known for efficiency and ease of use. Managing HP

3PAR StoreServ Storage using its Management Console is even easier and more efficient.

HP EVA Storage depends upon scripts beyond a certain number of VMs, which demand

the time of skilled administrators.

3PAR StoreServ handles storage provisioning, tiering, and change management at a sub-

system level, without intervention from an administrator. 3PAR’s self-regulating storage

infrastructure quickly adapts to change. Customer case studies and analyst reports show

increased storage management efficiency of up to 10 times, or up to 90 percent savings

in administrator costs.

HP 3PAR Rapid Provisioning – up and running in minutes

HP 3PAR Rapid Provisioning eliminates array planning by delivering instant,

application-tailored provisioning with HP 3PAR’s advanced virtualized architecture.

Provisioning is simple and requires no user intervention, while the systemwide data

striping provides high and predictable service levels for all workload types.

HP 3PAR Autonomic Groups – make traditional planning redundant

HP 3PAR Autonomic Groups gives organizations the flexibility to create host, volume,

and domain groups to further automate and expedite storage provisioning, simplifying

storage provisioning for clustered and virtual server environments now, and in the

future. Three clicks and 60 seconds are all that is required to fully create and provision

multiple volumes to multiple servers. These volumes can be configured in mere seconds,

without disruption and without compromise. Reducing manual repetition of tedious

commands greatly lessens the chance of human error, making the provisioning process

simpler and more reliable.

HP 3PAR Management Console – one console does it all

Management Console has a point-and-click interface that simplifies administration and

supports all HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage models. It's robust instrumentation and

customizable reporting capabilities make diagnosis and troubleshooting software tools

and consulting services unnecessary. Open administration support is provided via the

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Storage Management Initiative

Specification (SMI-S), and Web Services API.

Page 11: White Paper - HP® Official Site | Laptop Computers, Desktops

Edison White Paper: Business Value of EVA to 3PAR Page 8

HP 3PAR Management Console is fully integrated with signature HP 3PAR applications

such as HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning, Virtual Copy, Dynamic Optimization, Virtual

Domains, and Remote Copy Software. It consolidates all the tools that administrators

need to provision, manage, optimize, and protect their entire utility storage deployment

from a single console. With this console administrators achieve unified management of

all arrays (local and remote—all storage system models, including mid-range and high-

end arrays), multi-site replication set up and tested in just minutes (even using multiple

replication modes and system models), and automates disaster recovery configuration.

Federation

Megabytes of data can be moved efficiently using server virtualization and hypervisor-

based tools within an EVA environment. However, the movement of application data

can prove significantly more difficult. Existing server or hypervisor-based tools cannot

scale to meet the needs of organizations with large centralized storage, while moving

several gigabytes or even terabytes of data is impractical with them.

3PAR StoreServ Storage eliminates storage boundaries by moving workloads between

arrays without impact to applications, users, or services. Data can shift simply and

nondisruptively between any model HP 3PAR Storage system, without additional

management layers or appliances. Nondisruptive data mobility across systems enables

at-will load-balancing, seamless refreshing of technology, a reduction in asset lifecycle

management costs, and lower technology-refresh CAPEX. This mobility eliminates

capacity silos and virtualizes the entire data center storage infrastructure; capacity can

be pooled and used wherever it is available. The same architecture applies from the

small-midrange end to Tier 1, with unmatched IOPS—up to 450,000+ at the top end—

eliminating performance bottlenecks.

Peer Motion – nondisruptive data mobility

To facilitate the participation and federation of HP storage in cloud-based, converged IT

ecosystems, HP developed Peer Motion software. Peer Motion software enables the free

movement of data, absent of physical limitations, while at the same time maintaining

continuous availability and access. Peer Motion simplifies managing data movement by

eliminating the need for multiple products or additional management layers while

delivering improvements in scalability and availability, HP developed Peer Motion as a

way to add capacity without disrupting applications, and to balance workloads

efficiently and across the data center.

Employing a peer-based federation of arrays, HP Peer Motion supports movement of

data between similar systems on HP 3PAR StoreServ and HP StoreVirtual P4000

Page 12: White Paper - HP® Official Site | Laptop Computers, Desktops

Edison White Paper: Business Value of EVA to 3PAR Page 9

platforms. This feature reduces the cost and complexity of array migrations. One study 1

found that the time to provision new arrays averaged five months, and that array

migration costs exceeded $50,000 per migration. For a typical array this represents

additional costs, above the original hardware and software expenditures, consisting of:

Loss on buying earlier than required....... ~13%

Loss on lease payments......................... ~13%

Cost of array migration......................... ~17%

Total cost............................................. ~43% of acquisition cost

Another area of advantage is providing the equivalent of a VMware Storage vMotion for

high performance applications. By offloading the entire process to the arrays, the data

from more mission-critical applications can be moved in both bare-metal and virtualized

environments. The bottom line is that running the process through the server exacts

high performance and management overhead, with significant complexity and failure

rates. This makes it unsuitable for high performance, high value applications. The Peer

Motion, on the other hand, is completely transparent to the host.

HP EVA to 3PAR Online Import: Minimizing the Risk of Disruption in Migration

Organizations rightly worry that migration between an older and newer storage array

might cause major disruption, or seriously impact system performance, during

production hours. In the case of moving between HP EVA Storage and HP 3PAR

StoreServ Storage, HP minimizes data disruptions using 3PAR’s federated data

functionality and ability to move data seamlessly between nodes.

HP EVA to 3PAR Online Import software lets administrators move data quickly and

easily from HP EVA to 3PAR StoreServ Storage using Command View EVA. Even

administrators with no 3PAR experience have little difficulty with the process since it

leverages familiar Command View management tools.

Online Import is the preferred method to migrate from EVA to 3PAR StoreServ Storage.

It has the capability to rapidly manage a technology refresh cost-effectively. Unlike

VMware Storage vMotion—a popular means of moving data in virtualized

environments—Online Import operates in a an array-to-array fashion. vMotion moves

data by copying it from an array to a server and then to another array. The bottom line is

that the performance and management overhead of running the process through the

server is high, with significant complexity and failure rate.

TCO Scenarios: The Financial Returns

To show the tangible TCO savings possible by moving from EVA to 3PAR StoreServ

Storage, Edison envisioned before-and-after configurations for small, medium, and large

storage environments. The relevant specifications were fed into a standard TCO/ROI

calculator that factors in a host of assumptions, which are based on statistical data

provided by established market intelligence, advisory sources such as IDC, and best-

practice research data. Estimates for savings on power, cooling, and rack space are based

on publically available data on power usage and costs, and growth rate assumptions.

Any variables requested by the calculator tool (such as region, affecting average

administrator salaries) were identical for all configurations. Variables were as follows:

Capacity growth per year (%) 30%

Over-provisioning ratio on HP 3PAR StoreServ 150%

Cost of rack space per year $12,000

Power cost as of today (cost per KW/h) 0.12

Data center power efficiency (PUE) 2.5

Rack size (in rack U's) 42

Calculations were run out to a five-year projection for each configuration. The tables

below present the savings summaries.

Infrastructure TCO

The efficiency, scalability, and performance enhancements that the HP B-Series 16 Gb

switches bring to 3PAR StoreServ Storage results in further cost savings over using the

3PAR solution with the 4 Gb switches standard in EVA installments.

In order to present TCO savings for upgrading infrastructure, Edison envisioned the

before-and-after configurations of typical 4 Gb and 16 Gb B-series Fibre Channel

switches associated with the above small, medium, and large storage environments. A

similar TCO/ROI calculator was used which factors in a host of assumptions based on

statistical data provided by established market intelligence and advisory sources such as

IDC as well as best-practice research data. Any variables requested by the calculator tool

were kept identical throughout all configurations. Such variables were as follows:

Switch ports growth per year (%) 50%

Edison White Paper: Business Value of EVA to 3PAR Page 13

Savings were projected out over a 5-year period. The summarized savings are presented

in the tables that follow:

Small Medium Large

5-Year savings for power,

cooling, and rack space $114,542 $287,716 $490,580

5-Year management savings $43,750 $75,000 $150,000

5-Year Cumulative Total $227,042 $493,966 $909,338

As can be seen by these comparison tables, considerable savings can be realized beyond

those realized simply by switching from EVA to HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage, by

upgrading the 4 Gb switches standard with EVA to HP B-Series 16 Gb switches.

Conclusions

Edison recommends data center administrators currently relying on EVA storage and

coping with exponential data growth, increasing management complexity, and

unpredictable workloads to strongly consider upgrading to 3PAR StoreServ Storage and

HP B-series Storage Networking infrastructure. The HP B-Series 16 Gb switches improve

efficiency, scalability, and performance in the 3PAR StoreServ Storage over using the

3PAR solution with the 4 Gb switches standard in EVA installments, for further cost

savings.

Whether a data center wishes to move from a single EVA to a single 3PAR system, or is

consolidating multiple EVAs into one 3PAR system, 3PAR is the logical path for the

quickest pain-free upgrade and the greatest return on investment.

The benefits EVA users can expect to see with a move to 3PAR StoreServ Storage:

Simplicity

Administration time reduced by up to 90 percent.

Uses familiar Command View management tools to simplify data migration

from EVA to 3PAR StoreServ.

Performance

Process mission-critical workloads running as much as five times faster.

Page 17: White Paper - HP® Official Site | Laptop Computers, Desktops

Edison White Paper: Business Value of EVA to 3PAR Page 14

Support for mixed workloads to achieve higher service levels in the face of

unpredictable and changing demands.

Tripling of backup speed, with an impact on performance.

Efficiency

Slash storage capacity requirements by 50 percent or more (guaranteed by HP).

Cut SAN, energy, and floor space requirements by up to 75 percent.

Reduce storage equipment costs by up to 30 percent; data migrates to the most

efficient cost/performance resources automatically.

Twice the Virtual Machine density on existing physical servers, with no

performance tradeoffs to boost server virtualization ROI (guaranteed by HP).

HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage offers a single modular architecture and a single stack

scalable from the midrange to the very high end. An organization can begin to

dramatically increase storage capacity usage on a modest budget while reducing

operating expenses. With 3PAR StoreServ Storage, it can move as desired into massive

data center consolidation and virtualization, ITaaS, and cloud-based platforms without

having to restructure its IT storage environment.

HP designed EVA to 3PAR Online Import software to let administrators move data

quickly and easily from HP EVA to 3PAR Systems with negligible disruption, using the

Command View interface that EVA users are accustomed to. Even administrators with

no 3PAR experience have little difficulty with the process.
