Welcome to UCLU As a UCL student, you are now following in the footsteps of notable alumni who made great contributions to politics, science, or academia such as Gandhi, Alexander Graham Bell and Stella Gibbons. While UCL nurtures your academic talents, UCLU is your representative body campaigning for students’ rights; giving support and advice; and providing a huge range of student societies, events and activities. Every month we produce What’s On?, but you can always find our full calendar online at uclu.org/whats-on This special Welcome issue focuses on the events that are on during Welcome Festival (Saturday 22nd September to Saturday 6th October), so to keep up-to-date for the rest of the month, make sure you pick up the October issue of What’s On? Don’t miss Welcome Fair on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th September where you’ll find over 190 clubs and societies, as well as stalls providing you with more information about UCLU, what we currently do and how you can get involved. Campaigning & Volunteering UCLU is a campaigning organisation at heart. UCLU’s campaigns are our way to work together to change our education, our study, our community and our society. In recent years, UCLU has campaigned on a huge range of issues, including: • against fees and cuts in higher education • for fair wages for the workers at UCL • for just and equal treatment for liberation groups • for the extension of library opening hours to 24hrs a day • fundraising for great causes, including the disaster in Haiti But what we campaign on depends on you. For more details, visit uclu.org/campaigns UCLU is a huge volunteering organisation, with over 1,500 students taking part last year. Volunteering at UCLU is one of the most rewarding aspects of non-academic participation, and you can get involved in volunteering around almost anything that takes your interest, including the environment, sports, campaigning, drama or just to discover London. Making a difference doesn’t need to take up much of your time: most projects usually ask for a few hours a week, and you can get involved in one-off projects if you find committing to regular activities difficult to balance. Those interested in volunteering abroad should contact the VSU or the Volunteering society immediately.
