Rock your

worlda little

17

For physical fitness, fun and some

healthy adrenaline, nothing beats rock

climbing. Despite its daredevil

reputation, with proper instruction

and equipment rock climbing can be

safely enjoyed by any reasonably fit

person.

Page 18: March What's On

18

At the very bottom of Snow Water Road in Dorchester Heights is a footpath leading to the popular Windmill Hole. Here a small group of rock climbing enthusiasts come together over weekends and do what they love most ... rock climbing.Windmill Hole consists of two excellent routes, the 25m high Millennium Wall and the shorter, but more challenging cliff, Blixem. Another popular rock climbing site in East London is at Horseshoe Valley. The New South Africa Crag (NSA) was developed in 1999 by Garvin Jacobs (below in orange shirt) and Derek Marshall.NSA is definitely more advanced, with steeper routes to challenge the more experienced climber.

Rock climbing in East London

Don’t be misled by this bunch of youthful looking climbers! Between them they have almost 50 years of climbing experience. When you spend a day in their company, you realise they know exactly what they’re doing, really love their sport, and ALWAYS put safety first. You’ll have to go very far to find a bunch of people as pleasant, friendly and eager to share their knowledge with fellow enthusiasts or novice climbers.

Page 19: March What's On

19

Don’t let a fear of heights prevent you from giving rock climbing a try. Jakes will brief you on climbing safety and gear, the rating system and the jargon. Within no time at all you’ll be “up, up and away” and your biggest challenge will be wiping that silly grin off your face.

Are you keen to tAke your desire for Adventure to the next level?

Why not meet up with Jakes and the rest of the group any weekend and see if you like what rock climbing has to offer? They have extra equipment one can use, and if the bug bites, they will offer advice on what is needed, and where one can purchase the necessary gear.

BAsic climBing geArClimbing Harness: A harness con-sists of 2 basic parts: Waistbelt: This sits over the hips and must fit snugly. Leg loops: One loop goes around each leg. Many harnesses conveniently offer adjustable or

removable leg loops.Rock Climbing Shoes: Climbing shoes are for climbing only.Climbing HelmetClothing: Wear clothing that is not restrictive and won't get in the way of you or the rope.

MARCH EVENTS DIRECTORY

TB Awareness Month

Spay Month is a worldwide event that origi-nated in America (Doris Day was the driving force) in which we raise funds from the public for sterilisation of dogs and cats in the poorer communities. The uncontrolled breeding of dogs and cats is a huge problem, causing many abandoned strays, many puppies and kittens are left to fend for themselves. Spon-sor-a-Spay is a R300 donation that covers the costs of one sterilisation. It is indeed a very worthy cause. The forms with all the relevant info (including our banking details) are available from [email protected]. Contact Dot on 043 745 1441 for more info.

5 March. The Chinese (Green) Lady Powerpoint lecture with DVD snippets by Barry Gibb at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery from 7pm. Entry R40. Wine and juice available. Wine and fruit juice avail-able. The Chinese lady was painted in 1952 by Vladimir Tretchikoff who was considered (along with his musical counterpart Lib-erace) the King of Kitsch in the art world. The Chinese (Green) Lady has been dubbed the Queen of Kitsch and also the mother of Pop Art, but she rises above both Kitsch and Pop as the most sought after image of the twentieth Century (more copies sold in that century than the Mona Lisa). Tretchikoff’s Chinese Lady encapsulates the image of the supreme fame fatale spy of the times. She does not smile, but exudes a lethal sensuality which Tretchikoff has achieved (purposely or by accident) with his brilliant flash of yellow and sinister green’s, set off by touches’ of bright red, all in turn set off by the sobering raw canvas background, which gives it the fresh vitality of a sketch.
