Historic Edinburg

Edinburg, originally named Chapin after Hidalgo County Judge Dennis Chapin, became the county seat in 1908. The county jail was built there in 1909, cementing the town’s claim as the county seat. It was after Judge Chapin was accused of a murder in San Antonio in 1911 that the town was christened Edinburg by John Young, a promi-nent businessman, who named it after his birthplace of Edinburgh, Scotland.

It is mostly thanks to the vision and pioneering nature of John Closner that Edinburg owes its founding and initial success. In 1906, Closner, along with William Sprague, built a branch line of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway from San Juan Plantation to the site of Chapin, which at the time was an undeveloped community. With the help of Sprague and Judge Chapin, Closner began to develop the town in 1908, donating 1,400 acres to the development. It was Closner who arranged for the October 8, 1908, election that would make Chapin the county seat. Closner also gave Edinburg its first public school, served for years as president of the Edinburg State Bank and as director of other Valley banks, and encouraged development of Edinburg’s irrigation system.

Until the mid-1900s Edinburg’s economy was mostly dependent on ranching. The construction of the branch line of the St. Louis,

Brownsville and Mexico Railway in 1906 helped usher in a trade boom, and Edinburg became the trade hub for Hidalgo County. The development of the town and the success of the trade business led to a building boom in the late 1920s, and the town saw the addition of the Ebony Hills Country Club — now Edinburg Municipal Golf Course — and the Grandview Hospital, among many other sites. The most significant addition came on January 11, 1927, when the Southern Pacific Railroad ran its first train into the town of Edinburg. Seven months later, the Edinburg Southern Pacific Depot opened its doors.

Modern Edinburg is filled with rich historical reminders of its past. The Southern Pacific Depot still stands today and houses the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Information Center. The county jail, built in 1909, is now part of the Museum of South Texas History. Even the names of the streets reflect the city’s history: Many of the streets in the city, such as Van Vleck (Van Week), Lovett, Loeb, Kuhn and Stubbs, were named after executives of the Southern Pacific Railroad in hopes that they would build a line to the Rio Grande Valley. These names remain to this day. Just a tour around the heart of Edinburg showcases its rich history and the incredible tradition that makes Edinburg the great city it is today.

Shop Edinburg

The “I Shop Edinburg” campaign, formu-lated by the Edinburg Marketing Team two years ago, was a way to support the business and professional community in Edinburg while at the same time stimulating economic growth and promoting Edinburg’s quality of life. The mission of the campaign was clear: “To promote economic growth in Edinburg resulting in improved city services by encour-aging our residents to trade with local mer-chants, who will provide quality goods and services, thus securing a better future for our Edinburg community.”

The campaign, which raises money for economic development and city services, encourages local businesses to send the sales tax generated by citizens’ purchases to the state. Two percent of the tax then comes back to the city each month in state rebates.

To encourage the community to shop locally, the campaign developed an “I Shop Edinburg” Savings Card that allows holders to receive discounts on food and merchandise at participating retailers and merchant establish-ments. However, Elva Jackson-Garza, repre-senting the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, points out that the “I Shop Edinburg” cam-paign is not limited to Edinburg’s many department stores and restaurants. “When we talk about shopping in this campaign, it is not just about retail shopping. It also means professional services, from landscapers to physicians,” Jackson-Garza said. “We cer-tainly hope that our citizens will support this effort, because when we spend our money in Edinburg, it stays in Edinburg.”

Building a Healthy Future

The efforts of city officials and local busi-ness owners, coupled with the enthusiastic response of Edinburg’s citizens to the “I Shop Edinburg” campaign, made 2006 another

record-breaking year for the city’s economy. Total construction activities in 2006 totaled more than $192 million, including a slew of new commercial buildings valued at more than $79 million, representing a 75 percent increase over the $40 million in commercial activities in 2005. The explosion of retail con-struction included more than 400,000 square feet of new retail space, including the opening of a second Wal-Mart Supercenter and several adjacent stores on South McColl Road in November and the unveiling of Lowe’s Home Improvement in January 2007.

Strong growth in the health sector has also helped contribute to the area’s economic success. In 2006 more than $180 million was invested in the expansion and division of both the South Texas Health System and Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. The South Texas Health System opened a new children’s hos-pital and a behavioral health center that rep-resented an investment of more than $30 mil-lion, and the Doctors’ Hospital at Renaissance continues to expand, with more than $150 million being invested in additional medical facilities — including a new Women’s Hospital — that will bring more than 1,000 new jobs for area residents.

But with a population that has grown by 30 percent since the 2000 census, and with local officials projecting that the city will grow another 50 percent over the next five

years, one of the largest challenges faced by the community is creating a healthy future for its expanding population. Local officials, including the City of Edinburg, the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, and the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation (EEDC), are working hard to secure such a future for citizens.

Included in their plans is the ongoing con-struction of the Trenton Crossroads Shopping Center, an $80 million open-air lifestyle center that is projected to create 1,300 jobs and have an estimated $90 million annual economic impact over the course of its three-year devel-opment. EEDC Executive Director Ramiro Garza Jr. predicts the effects of the shopping center will be far-reaching. “After that [the project’s completion], over a 10-year period, the economic impact of the shopping center will approach $1 billion,” Garza asserted.

The center has already seen the launch of its first businesses. The new Wal-Mart Supercenter acts as the center’s retail anchor, and an Applebee’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill opened in September 2006. Other businesses slated for construction in the center include the city’s first Quizno’s Subs, the Valley’s first CVS/pharmacy, Pro Bowl Sports Lanes, Big Apple Bagels, and a franchise location of Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse (see feature on page 5), as well as an Italian restaurant and a national bank chain.

Anyone can see that the economic future looks bright for this three-time All-America City, but Mayor Joe Ochoa said it best in his January 2007 State of the City address: “Edinburg has great health care facilities and professionals, excellent educational opportu-nities, is a great place to shop and eat, and is a beautiful city to raise families. The year 2006 was another phenomenal year for the city, and I see a great future for Edinburg.”

One of the most anticipated new businesses slated for the Trenton Crossroads Plaza is Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. Named “Best Theatre in the Nation” by Entertainment

Weekly, the Austin-based business is a unique combination of movie theater and restaurant that features eclectic programming, including the best of first-run and independent movies and one-of-a-kind spe-cial events. Boasting six state-of-the-art screens, an extensive menu of fresh handmade dishes, and a full bar featuring mixed drinks, wine and the largest selection of on-tap beer in the Valley, the Alamo prom-ises to bring visitors and residents alike a pleasurable and exceptional experience.

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is an independently owned and operated movie theater that offers guests a full menu of dinner and drinks delivered directly to their seats while they watch a movie. The theater is laid out much like a traditional movie theater, except that every other row of seats has been replaced with long, narrow tables

for food and drinks. While some may worry that such a setup would cause disruptions during the movie, the Alamo has devised an ordering system that minimizes interaction during the film, allowing guests to order, eat and enjoy the movie with minimal interruption. Wait staff serve guests at their seats, and food and beverage orders placed before the movie begins are taken in the traditional way. Once the movie starts, guests who need service write their orders down with paper and pencils provided at the tables and place the paper in a card holder that is attached to the table, which acts as a flag for their server to come by. Wait staff only come if they see the card, otherwise staying out of the way to maximize enjoyment for all the patrons.

According to Ramiro Garza Jr., executive director of the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, the six-screen business will occupy 30,000 square feet of the new Trenton Crossroads Shopping Center, promising not only jobs and economic revenue to area citizens, but an exciting and unique form of entertainment as well!

In matters of health in the Rio Grande Valley, the South Texas Health System has been leading the way for years, and 2006

was an especially productive year.

Edinburg Children’s Hospital: Top-Quality Care for the Valley’s Smallest Patients

In early March the Edinburg Children’s Hospital opened its doors to the Valley’s lit-tlest patients.

The first and only facility of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley, the Edinburg Children’s Hospital features 14 intensive care beds, 12 step-down beds, eight oncology beds, 72 medical and surgical beds, full surgical and diagnostic capabilities, and an amazing staff that includes trained pediatric specialists, four pediatric intensives, a dedicated child life specialist, and 140 volunteers. The color-ful and playful jungle exhibition that adorns the lobby makes children feel more like they are in a playground than a hospital, and the activity tables, as well as the playrooms filled with storybooks, coloring books, toys and televisions, help them relax and speed the healing process.

The hospital also includes the only dedi-cated pediatric emergency room in the Rio Grande Valley. “In an emergency, children need special care and attention,” said Dr. Jose Enriquez, medical director of the Emergency Department. “Our specially trained physicians and nurses are dedicated to providing children with high-quality care around the clock.”

A visit to the emergency room can be frightening, and staff members recognize this and do all they can to help put patients at ease. The child-friendly facility offers a waiting room filled with jungle-themed decorations such as silly monkeys and brightly-colored toucans, where children can color and watch Cartoon Network until they are called into an exam room. In the exam room patients are greeted by comforting staff and provided with a flat-screen television to keep them enter-tained. Hospital staff members even give each child a special gift to brighten their visit.

South Texas Behaviorial Center: Compassionate Counsel in Times of Need

Also opened in 2006, the South Texas Behavioral Health Center in Edinburg was designed to meet the behavioral health needs of Valley residents age 4 to over 50. Whether patients are seeking counseling and programs for a specific crisis or for ongoing health, the Center offers inpatient, outpatient or partial hospitalization services. The facility, specially designed, constructed and staffed for special-ization in behavioral health, features separate areas dedicated to recreation, dining, consola-tion and private sessions, group therapy, and exercise. Individual treatment plans cover a wide range of behavioral health conditions, including addiction, disorder and mental ill-ness, with the goals and comfort of the patient in mind.

Expanding Edinburg Regional Hospital

Edinburg Regional Hospital saw its share of development in 2006 as well, with the construction of a catheterization lab near the outpatient surgery department and a magnetic resonance imaging unit adjacent to the radiol-ogy department.

Edinburg Regional also introduced a pediatric specialization at its Regional Rehabilitation Center for parents seeking rehabilitation services for their children. Occupational, recreational, speech and pedi-atric physical therapists in the Rehabilitation Center provide patients recovering from amputations, arthritis, brain injury, multiple trauma and other conditions with three hours of daily intensive rehabilitation services. The Rehabilitation Center, in conjunction with Easter Seals, also offers the Early Childhood Intervention program, which provides free outpatient services to qualifying patients who require additional rehabilitation services once they return home. Plans for a rehabilitation and medical treatment program for children with spasticity, a condition marked by contin-uous muscle contractions that causes stiffness and abnormal muscle movement, are also in the works.

Comprehensive Community CareWith all that’s been happening in Edinburg,

it may be easy to forget that the South Texas Health System has other facilities. However, the McAllen Medical Center, the McAllen Heart Hospital, the Surgical Center of South Texas and the Edinburg Cornerstone Regional Hospital also offer the exceptional medical care and service that Valley residents deserve.

For more information about what all the Valley hospitals in the South Texas Health System have to offer, visit South Texas Health System at www.southtexashealthsystem.com.

Doctors Hospital at Renaissance

Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is a full-service medical and surgical facility that has been providing quality health care to the residents of the Rio Grande Valley since 1997. In June 2006 Doctors Hospital broke ground on a $65 million, 200,000-square-foot hospital solely dedicated to women’s health. With an expected completion date in 2007, the 105-bed Women’s Hospital at Renaissance will feature 24 labor and delivery suites, 24 post-surgical patient suites, 48 postpar-tum suites, 36 newborn nurseries, a 28-bed neonatal intensive care unit, five surgical suites, and 14 medical beds and will be capable of 8,000 deliveries per year. The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance is a vital addition to a region whose population is projected to exceed 1 million by 2010. As city councilmember Alma A. Garza stated at the groundbreak-ing, “It’s so important to have a facility that focuses on medical services for women and their newborn children here at home. It will be an asset for all the women in the Valley and South Texas, not just Edinburg.”

The Women’s Hospital is just the first of more than $150 million in expansions Doctors Hospital has planned for the near future. Also in the works are a radiation oncology center, an 80-bed behavioral health hospital, several medical office buildings, and a hotel. Visit www.dhr-rgv.com or call 956-661-7100.

The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District is known by area edu-cators and residents as the “Education

Center of the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.” With a district that encompasses 945 square miles, the ECISD is one of largest land mass districts in the country and continues to grow — which is perfect for a school whose student population grows by an average of 5 percent every year.

Expansion and Renovation

To provide quality education to a district of almost 29,000 students is no easy feat, but the district spares no expense to meet its educational goals.

In addition to the three high schools, four middle schools, 27 elementary schools, and one alternative education school that already make up the ECISD, the school board adopted a district budget in August 2006 that includes $7.1 million for the 2006/2007 school year to either build classroom wings to existing schools or build an entirely new elementary school to address rising student numbers at the elementary level.

At the direction of the ECISD school board, the district is conducting a $5 million renova-tion project at the old Harwell Middle School, currently known as the Ebony campus facility. Plans are to have the renovations completed by May 30, 2007, so the facility can open its doors as the district’s fifth middle school when the 2007/2008 school year begins.

Reaching for the Future

At the high school level, ECISD under-stands the importance of preparing students for what awaits them after graduation.

In addition to the honors curriculum and advanced placement courses, ECISD offers the Career and Technology Education Department, which allows students to explore career pathways in areas such as agricul-tural science and technology; business and marketing; art, communications and media; health science technology; and government and public administration. Students in the CTE department are given the opportunity to earn college credit by enrolling in Articulated Technical Credit courses or dual-enrollment college courses.

ECISD also implements a program at sev-eral area high schools called “Gear Up,” which aims to increase the number of students who enter a post-secondary institution by provid-ing weekend workshops at no cost to students who wish to attend and review for the ACT or SAT. Students are also given the opportunity to gain valuable leadership skills by participating in any of the numerous academic programs or leadership organizations, including debate, computer science, SkillsUSA and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America.

Awards and Accolades

All one has to do to understand how deeply dedicated each and every one of the ECISD’s 3,900 employees is to the quality education of the area’s youth is to look at the accolades gen-erated by the district’s incredible success:

• In 2006, the Texas Education Agency presented 33 ECISD schools with Gold Performance Acknowledgments, which recognize school districts and campuses for high academic performance on var-ious indicators, such as commended performance on Texas Assessment of

Knowledge and Skills, college admis-sions tests, and AP/IB examinations.

• Texas Monthly magazine named five Edinburg CISD elementary schools and two middle schools as seven of the best public schools in Texas in December 2006.

• Newsweek magazine named Edinburg North High School one of 2006’s “Best Schools in America.”

• Three ECISD elementary schools were named to the Texas Business and Education Coalition 2006 Honor Roll for their students’ performance on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills tests, prompting interim Superintendent of Schools Gilbert Garza Jr. to acknowl-edge all the dedication and support that

goes into the ECISD. “It shows that our principals, teachers and parents are com-mitted to the success of our students. We are very proud to have earned this recognition.”

The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA)

The University of Texas-Pan American, located in Edinburg, is the 10th-largest uni-versity in the state and the fifth-largest in the University of Texas System. UTPA enrolls the highest number and percentage of Hispanics — 87 percent — among Texas public universities.

The university is ranked second and fifth in the nation in the number of bachelor’s and master’s degrees awarded to Hispanics, respectively. In addition, UTPA boasts the

No. 1 rehabilitation program in the nation for graduating Hispanics.

UTPA offers 55 bachelor’s degrees, 50 master’s degrees, two doctoral degrees and a cooperative doctoral program in pharmacy with the University of Texas at Austin. The six academic colleges — Arts and Humanities, Business Administration, Education, Health Sciences and Human Services, Science and Engineering, and Social and Behavioral Sciences — offer a wide range of degree options encompassing a comprehensive series of academic concentrations and selected areas of professional study.

Following the recommendation of a seven-person citizens’ committee, the Edinburg Consolidated Independent

School District school board plans to name its fifth middle school, scheduled for completion in May 2007, after longtime community and parent volunteer Francisco Barrientes.

Barrientes, 59, is a lifelong Edinburg resi-dent. After graduating from Edinburg High School he was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1968 and sent to Vietnam. On May 5, 1969, he was struck in the leg by an enemy hand grenade but despite the injury returned to the battlefield several days later, where he suffered an AK47 gunshot to the face that left him without an esophagus and damaged his vocal chords. The resulting injury forced him to undergo over seven years of extensive reconstruction and medical rehabilitation. He

retired from the military as a disabled veteran and the recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star and quickly decided that, despite his severe injuries, he had been given a second chance at life.

“I got a second chance for a reason,” said Barrientes. “It’s not really my life anymore. I believe that I was allowed to survive for a reason. I am supposed to help as many people as I can.”

For the last 35 years, Barrientes has done what he could to accomplish that goal. He has dedicated himself to a life of service that includes volunteering in the community, in area schools and at church events.

Barrientes began volunteering at schools in the ECISD in 1980. He gave his time to many different district schools before finally dedicating himself to serving the children and staff of L.B. Johnson Elementary. Over the last 27 years he has served the school under six principals and given more than 22,000 hours of volunteer service. His typical day includes five to six hours at the school, where he per-forms tasks such as assisting with traffic duty, supervising children on field trips, helping out with Parent-Teacher fundraising events, and even helping out with light office duties such as making copies, doing calendars and

answering the school phone. But his dedi-cation to the district’s school children goes beyond the typical school day. It isn’t unusual for parents to call him and ask him to talk to their children about things like the importance of attending school, doing their homework and behaving. And to the children he serves, he is not just a parent volunteer: He is a teacher, a counselor, a friend, and a confidant.

In 2002, Texas Governor Rick Perry and the State Board of Education named Barrientes a “Texas Hero for Children,” an award that honors individual volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to student learn-ing or who have demonstrated a sustained period of involvement and support of public education.

It was only natural that when the “Name the School” committee asked for ideas, Barrientes’ name was among those nominated. As nominators Elizabeth Aguilar, Elsa Perales and Irma Garza said on their nomination form, “Mr. Barrientes is a respected individual that has won the hearts of the community. He fosters in everyone an appreciation for life. He passionately instills in children his motto: ‘Stay in school and get a good education, appreciate what you have, and don’t take life for granted.’”

An ever-growing population means a high demand for affordable, quality housing, and Edinburg has something

to oblige everyone. Almost 70 percent of Edinburg residents

own their home, a value that is a strong testa-ment not only to the economic success of the region, but also to the reasonable cost of liv-ing. With a median home cost of $63,500, it’s easy to see why so many people are willing to invest in the Edinburg community!

While numerous citizens may look to pur-chase existing structures, more and more resi-dents are looking to build their own homes or buy new homes. More than $70 million was spent on single-family residential construc-tion in 2006, resulting in 765 new homes.

For those looking to buy or build a new home, Edinburg’s many subdivisions offer an assortment of homes in every size and price range:

• The Las Cruces community offers one- or two-story, three- to five-bedroom homes starting at $80,000.

• Briar Grove is a beautiful community that provides a comfortable family atmo-sphere with homes ranging in size from 1,319 to 3,015 square feet, starting in the $90,000 range.

• The Bella Vista neighborhood offers buyers seven different floor plans, start-ing with a 1,584-square-foot model priced in the low $120s.

• Northbrook Estates is a gated commu-nity that allows families to choose from 15 floor plans made to fit their lifestyle, with starting prices in the low $140s.

• For those looking for a country-club feel, Los Lagos Golf Club Homes offers five spacious floor plans ranging from 2,150 to 2,736 square feet, with spec-tacular views of Los Lagos Golf Course. Residents can also enjoy the exclusive use of the Community Park, pool and pavilion, all for a home starting in the low $160s.

• Villa Del Prado offers families plenty of room to create the home of their dreams,

with lots starting at $28,950 for 64 by 117.5 square feet.

Multi-family accommodations are also among the many housing options Edinburg has to offer. In 2006 over $20 million was spent constructing almost 200 multi-family residences, for a total of more than 400 new units for those seeking to rent. The affordabil-ity of rental units in Edinburg can’t be denied, with a median rent of $453, and renters have a variety of units to choose from, including duplexes, town homes, condos, and studio or multi-bedroom apartments.

The above are just a few of the many popular communities in Edinburg. Whether you are a family looking for your dream home or a single person just looking for that place to relax at the end of the day, Edinburg has something that is just right. For help in find-ing the right community for you, the area has many people, from friendly real estate agents to accommodating landlords, happy to help you find the perfect place to call home!

A rich cultural heritage and the diver-sity of the area’s residents — from natives to the Winter Texans — means

the Lower Rio Grande Valley is especially equipped to give residents and visitors access to a delectable array of fine arts and entertain-ment. In addition to the multitude of recitals, guest performances, concerts, dance pro-grams, art exhibits and theatre productions held regularly on the University of Texas-Pan American campus, people of the Valley also have access to the professional sounds of the Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Valley Symphony Chorale.

Museum of South Texas History

Those in search of a blend of art and enter-tainment will find a day at the Museum of South Texas History (MOSTH) both enjoyable and educational. Dedicated to preserving and presenting the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico, the museum offers both permanent and temporary exhibits featuring the region’s geological and cultural history.

The museum, a part of the community since 1967, was located exclusively in the old Hidalgo County Jail for over 30 years. While some of the museum’s exhibits are still housed in the Old Jail, the majority of the MOSTH collection is housed in the 22,500-square-foot wing expansion that was completed in 2003. The $5.5 million expansion includes the museum store, Grand Lobby and the museum’s permanent exhibits, including “Rio Grande Legacy,” a three-part exhibit sequence featuring bilingual text and state-of-the-art

displays that takes visitors on a journey through the history and prehistory of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The first and sec-ond sections, “River Frontier,” illustrate the geological origins of the area, its ancient ani-mals and plants, its native peoples and their encounters with Europeans, and the establish-ment of the region as a frontier of New Spain. “River Crossroads” introduces visitors to the rapid and astounding changes the region experienced during the 20th century.

Held the second weekend in February, Pioneer and Ranching Craft Day is the muse-um’s largest special event and features artisans from throughout the lower Rio Grande Valley demonstrating the crafts used by early settlers of the area, including woodworking and spin-ning. The event also features traditional foods, live music and children’s activities.

For more information about the South Texas Museum of History, including program and event schedules, call 956-383-9611 or visit them online at www.mosthistory.org.

Valley Symphony Orchestra

A group of community volunteers came together in 1976 to form the South Texas Symphony Association. Since its inception, its major goal has been the sponsorship of the Valley Symphony Orchestra.

The Valley Symphony Orchestra is home to 80 talented musicians led by Peter Dabrowski. Now in his seventh season as conductor and musical director, Dabrowski conducts the symphony through its six-concert subscrip-tion season and in a variety of other special concert events, such as a Pops Extravaganza

and the South Texas Youth Symphony, as well as children’s concerts that allow students the opportunity to hear live performances of pieces they study in the classroom.

The Valley Symphony Orchestra performs both standard symphonic repertoire and com-missioned new works and plays host to acclaimed American and international solo-ists such as renowned Russian pianist Sergei Musaelyan, who played at a special chamber music concert early in the 2006–2007 sea-son. The 2006–2007 season also delighted audiences with performances that included Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, and other classic pieces. The many cultures present in the Valley have influ-enced the selection of music the symphony performs. The Valley Symphony Chorale, originally the Rio Grande Valley Chorale, was founded in 1954 and became a permanent addition to the Valley Symphony Orchestra’s season in 1984. Since 1985 the ensemble has been under the direction of Christopher Munn and has performed such works as J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Handel’s Messiah, Verdi’s Te Deum, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, and Brahms’ Requiem. The Chorale has also developed a reputation of quality performance outside the Valley, performing at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1994 and again in 1996. For concert schedules, ticket infor-mation and other inquiries about the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Valley Symphony Chorale, call 956-393-2293 or visit them on the Web at www.valleyorchestra.org.

Edinburg’s rich history and diverse pop-ulation combine to create a unique cultural experience that best expresses

itself in the assortment of festivals and cel-ebrations the city holds annually. Local favor-ites include Fiesta! Edinburg, the Rio Grande Valley Coastal Expo, the Night of Lights Christmas Celebration, and the brand new Texas Cook ’Em Steak Cook-off.

A Fiesta! By any Other Name ...

Fiesta! Edinburg is easily the community’s largest festival, attracting more than 25,000 people to the area over the course of the four-day event. Originally held to commemorate the successful theft of county records from the city of Hidalgo in the early 1900s that led to Edinburg becoming the seat of Hidalgo County, the festival today is used as a way to maintain the closeness the community has developed. And as the name implies, it’s also a great reason to have a party!

The event, sponsored by the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, is held during the last weekend in February and features a variety of activities suitable for all ages, from the tradi-tional parade around the city to live concerts, a midway carnival and hands-on exhibits. The 39th annual Fiesta! Edinburg was held at the Edinburg Municipal Park and featured a tropical theme. To open Friday night’s festivi-ties, Houston-based hip-hop artist Baby Bash and opening act Sophia Maria were chosen as the live entertainment. According to Cris Torres, event and talent coordinator for Fiesta!

Edinburg, this is the third year in a row the event has featured a hip-hop act as a Friday night performance. “They’re popular right now,” Torres said. “We tried different acts, but ... Baby Bash and Sophia Maria are the ones we knew the age group would like.”

Chamber organizers also chose to cap off Saturday’s festivities with a rousing fireworks display. As always, entry to the festival’s events was free, with just a $5 charge for parking. For more information about next year’s Fiesta! Edinburg, contact the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce at 956-383-4974.

Coastal Expo 2007: Fun Meets Fiesta!

The Edinburg World Birding Center hosts many programs and events throughout the year. But the largest and most influential by far is the Rio Grande Valley Coastal Expo. Sponsored by the Edinburg WBC, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the City of Edinburg, and many local businesses, the RGV Coastal Expo attracts more than 5,000 young people and their families each year. Its aim is to open up a world of coastal creatures, wetland ecology and outdoor adventure to area youth who may not have the opportu-nity to visit Texas shorelines and be exposed to or educated on the importance and value of the resources that lay in their own back-yard. Using a multitude of hands-on stations, interactive booths, nature walks, outdoor skills training and more, Expo staff and more than 100 volunteers help visitors to explore

the wonders of the Texas coast and the Rio Grande River basin.

The 2007 RGV Coastal Expo was of special importance, as the Edinburg WBC partnered with the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce for the first time ever to host the Expo in con-junction with Fiesta! Edinburg. By holding the two events simultaneously, organizers of both events hoped to expose citizens and area visitors to the amazing diversity the region has to offer. “It’s a really great event with cool and interesting things to do,” said Marisa Oliva, manager of the WBC. “We have really cool activities that kids don’t get exposed to else-where. How many times in the Valley are you going to see rock climbing walls and fishing tanks? It’s lots of good outdoor fun.”

Texas Cook ’Em: High Steaks in Edinburg

New to the festival scene in 2006 was the first annual Texas Cook ’Em, a steak cook-off that featured over 60 entries and promised winners more than $15,000 in cash prizes. Sponsored by the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, the City of Edinburg and the Edinburg Economic Development Corporaton and sanctioned by the International Bar-B-Que Cookers Association, the 2006 event also gave winners the opportunity to participate in the American Royal Barbeque Championship, the mother of all barbeque competitions, held in Kansas City each fall.

Judges weren’t hard to come by for the first annual Cook ’Em, and community members

from all walks of life, from homemakers to senior citizens, business owners to college students, eagerly volunteered to taste the brisket, chicken, ribs and steak prepared by the participants.

Besides award-winning barbeque, the Cook ’Em also features live music and family entertainment. According to Evana Vleck, the Chamber’s director of marketing and special events, nothing could dampen the spirits of festival-goers — not even rain.

“From what I hear, it’s not so unusual for rain to occur during a cook off,” Vleck said. “It is unusual, however, for it to rain during July in the Rio Grande Valley! Although the rain came down hard, the cooks still continued to barbeque to the best of their ability, and many spectators stayed to watch and see the final results.”

While the first annual Texas Cook ’Em could be deemed noth-ing but a success, the 2007 event wase even larger, and the city of Edinburg eagerly awaits this unique and exciting event in 2008! For more information about the Texas Cook ’Em, contact the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce at 956-383-4974 or visit the Web site at www.edinburg.com/chamber/events/texas_cookem_faqs.html.

Night of Lights: A Christmas Celebration

Christmas is a special time of year no matter where you live, but the citizens of Edinburg will tell you their city knows how to turn it into a real celebration! Night of Lights, South Texas’ annual Christmas spectacular, is a massive event jointly sponsored by the University of Texas Pan-American, the City of Edinburg, the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, and the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce. The event — which has grown each year since its inception in 1999 — draws record crowds each year. The Night of Lights Christmas Celebration offers visitors a rich variety of events and activities

designed to rouse the Christmas spirit. A parade featuring hundreds of entries, including floats, dancing horses and live musical groups, proceeds down University Drive and always closes with none other than Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus themselves, to the delight of all the children — and many of the adults! — in attendance.

The celebration also features live entertainment, including musical performances by choirs from area schools, an entertaining kiddie area, crafts and game booths, a delectable assortment of food from dozens of vendors, and a spectacular fireworks display, among many other activities.

For more information about 2007 plans for this spectacular event, contact the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce at 956-383-4974.
