MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
This time of the year, I reflect on the celebrations
of the end of the calendar year. Many, if not all,
cultures celebrate some sort of festival of lights and
the common element of such celebrations are the
wishes of peace to one another. All the festivities
are on or around the Winter Solstice when earth is
furthest from the sun. Perhaps the festival
describing this the most is the Inuvik Sunrise
Festival where the arrival of the sun is the
reaffirmation that there is going to be a new day.
Different spiritual beliefs have their own
celebrations:
Christians celebrate Christmas; Muslims, 'Eed-al-
Adhaa; Jewish, Hanukkah, Hindus, Diwali and Pancha Ganapati. Also, there is a Pan-African
festival, Kwanza, celebrated primarily in North
America, and one of the oldest European
celebration for pagans and or secular people is Yule
and Yalda or the winter solstice festival.
Let us reflect for a moment on the common
element of these celebrations. All of these
celebrations have in common the wishes of peace.
The hope for a better year to come and
demonstrate the love we have for our fellow
human.
It is unfortunate that many of us have substituted
the meaning of the season; replacing it with a
commercialized shopping spree. The meaning of
best wishes for our fellow humans shifts to buy the
best gift or the newest gadget.
I invite you to celebrate the season with care for
our fellow humans; to celebrate the season caring
for those who are disadvantaged in our society.
In a time where, at least in appearance, there is
much less tolerance with our differences than
acceptance for our similarities, it is important to
remember that Multiculturalism in Canada was
officially adopted in 1971. The Canadian
Multiculturalism Act is a law of Canada, passed in
1988, and has become our identity as a country. It is an example for the rest of the world on how the
future of the society must be.
Thus, this holiday season, let us reflect on the
meaning of our celebrations and remember that
peace and prosperity is the real meaning of all the
festivities.
Now I would like to share with you my own wishes
of peace.
The world, and indeed our city, are in turmoil. The
culture and life of the city is changing and the
services offered for people in need are being
eroded once again. Politicians commit to services
and yet there is less funding to address the
increasing needs.
We share such concerns. However, in this end of
the year message I wish to share with you our
hopes for better times to come.
In the spirit of the season, let us celebrate together
the wishes of peace. On behalf of the staff and the
volunteers at BBNC, I wish you all a peaceful and
loving Holiday season and a prosperous 2020.
Yours truly,
Enrique
Why do I wish people “Happy Holidays”? Because from November 1st to January 15,
there are approximately 29 holidays observed by 7 of the world’s major religions. And I don’t think mine are the only
ones that count.

“SENIORS IN TRANSITION” - 6 DECLUTTER-ING SECRETS FOR LESS ANXIETY 'Undisputed facts' spelled out in this new
workshop
Are you an "Empty Nester" who is intimidated,
frustrated and confused with many years of ac-
cumulated things in your home and don't know
where and how to start?. Is it time to declutter
so you can downsize into another home more
suitable for your golden retirement years? As
you age, the decluttering can become over-
whelming and suffocating as volumes grow, and
more challenging if your physical health isn’t
what it used to be.
Don’t get overwhelmed and frustrated while
decluttering your home, instead focus on the
more important issues of downsizing and how
to avoid mistakes that could easily cost you
thousands of dollars.
To help you understand the issues involved in
decluttering and making such a move, a Free
LIVE workshop has been organized which iden-
tifies these issues, and shows you how to steer
clear of decluttering mistakes that could exacer-
bate you.
