Newsletter of New Hope Lutheran Church Columbia, MD July 2016 From the Pastor What is our response as the Body of Christ? Another mass shooting. More senseless violence. The gut-wrenching grief of those who remain. And always the question why with a never-quite-satisfactory answer. This time it is 50 people who died, the killer along with a targeted group, the LGBTQ community. An unstable man with violent tendencies killed 49 patrons of a bar on a Saturday night. He used his religion as a crutch to perpetrate violence. The shooter hated those inside the gay and lesbian bar. What is our response as the Body of Christ? Here are a few first thoughts. First, pray...always pray, holding the families and loved ones who grieve in God’s care. We pray for the community damaged by this act, pray for an ability for people to come together in lasting ways to strengthen ties within communities, pray for hope to rise...pray. Second, reflect upon how we as a society come to such a place. What problems/challenges have we ignored? Where and how have we acted to contribute to fertile ground for such an event? Standing in God’s grace, be honest with ourselves. Ask the question what does it mean to be faithful in this situation, in these days? Third, resist hatred. It is so tempting and easy to adopt the words being flung around us, words of vengeance, of prejudice and negative stereotype. Hatred destroys, love builds up. Hatred is of death, love serves life. We are followers of Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life. Fourth, act – be the peace we hope to see. We are the people of the Prince of Peace. Live in such a way as to not just accept, but protect the outcast. Proactively build bridges across cultural, gen- der, color, sexual orientation, and religious divides. Manifest the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control in our everyday lives, esp. at work, on the internet, at the gym, in our homes, and at school. In other words, ‘Remember who we are and Whose we are’. Trust that there is always hope for us and for the world because of God’s promise in Christ.

From the Pastor
What is our response as the Body of Christ?
Proactively build bridges across cultural, gen-der, color, sexual orientation, and religious divides.

October 31, 2017
Do you know why that is a significant date? It is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. It was on October 31, 1517 when Luther nailed the 95 theses to the door of the church at Witten-berg. Although he only wanted to start a discussion, he actually started the Reformation (others had sought to reform the church before Luther, but Luther is widely credited with starting the Reformation).
Remembering that we are church and as such, always reforming, how shall New Hope observe this anniversary? Do you have ideas? Would you like to be a part of the planning and prepara-tion? Cindy Ranker is forming a team to look into how we should observe this anniversary. If you’d like to be a part of that, please contact her ([email protected]).
Flat Jesus Do you have your Flat Jesus? Don’t forget to take pictures of Flat Jesus as he accompanies you on your many adventures this summer! Like our Facebook page: NHLC-Flat Jesus, and then post the pictures. Or, you can send the pictures to Sharon ([email protected]) or Cindy ([email protected]) and they’ll post them for you!

Another Great Year of GIFTS! In May, we finished another year of Growing In Faith Together (GIFT) – our month-ly intergenerational faith formation event. This past year we spent talking about and exploring various spiritual practices, from prayer to service. We danced, we prayed, we played games – not to mention eating some great meals together, too!
The GIFT team is already looking forward to next year. We would love to expand our team. Would you like to help with one or more of the monthly events? Are you an idea person? Do you like to be in front of the group or behind the scenes helping with crafts or in the kitchen? Please consider sharing your gifts with us by joining our team. We have “seasoned veterans” who would be willing to work with you, if nec-essary – just say the word!
We’ll still have our monthly events on the second Friday of the month (adjusted a little for things like Good Friday). So if you’re interested in helping out please contact Cindy Ranker ([email protected]) AND remember to mark your calendars now for the second Fridays of the month beginning in October. We’d love to see you there!

Women’s Discussion Group
Ladies! Join us on the
1st Saturday of the month at 9:30am.
Our Stewardship Journey Starts with 4 R’s Stewardship is defined as the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care. God has entrusted us to care for all that belongs to him. What does it mean to be God’s stewards? We’ll be learning more about that on our Stewardship Journey, which begins on July 31.
Wait, what? How is stewardship a journey? Does this mean we have to listen to endless pleas for money?
No. Actually, our stewardship journey falls in line with our faith journey as a church. We’ll talk some about money, in the context of the ministry teams’ plans for the coming year, but our primary focus will be on how God is calling you to become involved in carrying out those plans.
You’ve heard of the 3 “R’s” – reading, writing & arithmetic (really, only one ‘r’ word, but… I digress). The path of our stewardship journey starts with 4 “R’s”
Review – the Finance team will share the “prospective budget” beginning in July, we ask that you re-
view it and ask questions
Reflect – take some time to reflect on how God is calling you to be a part of New Hope’s ministry, and...
Reimagine – how your contributions (time, talent, and/or treasure) could be the difference in expand-ing the reach of New Hope’s ministry
Respond – with how you plan to contribute (again… time, talent, and/or treasure); pledge cards will be distributed by September 11 and received beginning September 25.
But the path doesn’t end there… on Saturday, October 29, we will gather to celebrate the gifts God has so
abundantly given to us. We will also outline the rest of our journey to explore what it means to be stewards of
God and how we use all that God has entrusted to our care.

THE LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES ARE UP!!! Take a book/Leave a book. That is how a Little Free Library works. People come up, look through the books and choose one or more to take with them. The books can be returned or not. People can bring books and leave them in the library. We have 2 libraries, one for children’s books and one for young adults/adults. This is a way to reach into the community and promote literacy.
The comments from our neighbors walking by while the libraries were being installed were very positive. One neighbor thanked us for beautifying the neighborhood. Others thanked us for putting up the libraries. One family with young children even got to have their picture taken with the author of the first books in our library. Marla Stahl was helping install the libraries on the first night and there were copies of her children’s book about her rescue dog in the one library. The young boy and girl were so happy to be able to take the book and have their picture taken with the author!!!
While we will supply the libraries with donated books, please do not bring any in to church yet. We need to sort the supply we have currently, arrange storage space and monitor how the existing stock is moving in and out of the libraries. Thank you to Ken Cain, Brad Seider, Eve Lenze, Marla Stahl and Kathy Piet for installing and stocking the libraries. Thank you to Tom Punte for preparing the libraries and posts for installation. Thank you to Sharon and Tom Punte for donating the pavers. The Little Free Library Team – Marg Goodlin (Steward), Marla Stahl, Kathy Piet

God’s Work Our Hands Weekend – September 9 - 11
Planning Meeting - Thursday, July 14 at 7 pm.
Join with our brothers and sisters in Christ from Abiding Savior Lutheran Church and First Baptist Church of Guilford
in planning service activities for this weekend. We will meet at New Hope on Thursday, July 14 at 7 pm.
Seeking Visual Tech for Sunday Mornings
The Tech Team is looking for someone who can help out on Sunday mornings. Each week we would like to have announcements that are projected on the wall before and after each service. The presentation is already prepared, we just need someone on Sunday mornings who can start the slide show about 15 minutes before the services and turn it off when worship begins. Hope-fully we will have more than one volunteer so you can take turns covering it. Can you help us out? If so, talk to Cindy Ranker or email her ([email protected]).
