Skulls from the Genocide in Rwanda

Page 3: What is genocide?

The term “genocide” did not exist until 1944.

Page 4: What is genocide?

What was happening in the 1930s and 1940s that mayhave led to the term genocide being invented?

Page 5: What is genocide?

In East Africa, there are two countries whose people are suffering from genocide.

1) Rwanda - Hutus have killed at least 800,000 Tutsis

100,000 of those were children

2) Sudan - The people of Darfur are victims of genocide.

At least 70,000 dead, but could be as much as 300,000.

They said: "Many are called and few are chosen,"But I wish some wasn’t chosen

for the blood spilling of Rwanda.

They said: "Meshach, Shadrack and Abednego,Thrown in the fire but you never get burned,"but I wish that I didn't get burned in Rwanda.

They said: "The man is judged according to his works,"so tell me Africa, what’s your worth?

There’s no money, no diamonds, no fortuneson this planet that can replace Rwanda…

And if England, is the United Kingdom,Then why can’t Africa unite all the kingdoms

and become United Kingdom of Africa?

The Rwanda Genocide

This is their story...

Page 19: What is genocide?

Between April and June of 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans, from the group known as Tutsis, were killed in the

span of 100 days.

Page 20: What is genocide?

Who are the Tutsis?

Who killed the Tutsis?

Page 21: What is genocide?

Early Rwanda History

• Rwanda and Burundi were ONE nation in the 1800s

• The Tutsis and the Hutus made up the population in the country

• They used to live in the country together peacefully and quietly

• Rwanda was colonized by Germany and ruled by Germany until the 1900s.

Page 22: What is genocide?

A Division Begins...• In the 18th century,

Rwanda became a powerful nation

• They measured their wealth in cattle

• The Tutsi were rich with cattle so they were the elite and ruling class

• The Hutus has less cattle so they had less power

Page 23: What is genocide?

Rwanda Population in 18th Century

Even though the Tutsi were

the smaller group, they

still had more power than the Hutu.

Page 24: What is genocide?

A Greater Division...

•The United Nations (UN) is an international organization that controls international law, security, and human rights.

•The UN decided in the 1900s that Rwanda was to be ruled by Belgium instead of Germany.

Page 25: What is genocide?

Even more division...

•The Belgians favored the Tutsis and gave them special privileges and better education than the Hutus

Page 26: What is genocide?

Why did the Belgians favor the Tutsis?

•Tutsis appeared more European than the Hutus because of their slender stature

•The Belgians discriminated against the Hutus because they DID NOT look as European as the Tutsis

Page 27: What is genocide?

How do you think the Tutsis felt about this?

How do you think the Hutus felt about this?

Page 28: What is genocide?

So what happened next?

Page 29: What is genocide?

The Belgians left Rwanda in the 1960s.

The Hutus were growing tired of the discrimination.

Rwanda and Burundi split into 2 countries.

The Hutus decided to fight the Tutsis because they were still angry for the years of

discrimination.

Many Tutsis are massacred and flee Rwanda.
