Child Pedestrian Injuries: A Global Problem
• 1,000 young people die a day on the roads: one every 90 seconds
• More than 133,000 children between the ages of 5-14 years are killed each year walking on roads (often to and from school) in developing countries.
• Road traffic accidents kill more children between the ages of 5-14 years than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or malaria.
• Child pedestrians have the highest rates of death and injury in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
