About these Routes
The average person loses 13 poundsintheirfirstyearofbike commuting.
• Ride with your hands on the handlebars.• Stopandcheckfortrafficinbothdirections
when leaving a driveway, an alley, or a curb.• Cross at intersections, not between parked
cars.• Walk your bike across busy intersections
usingthecrosswalkandfollowingtrafficsignals.
• Ride on the right-hand side of the street, so you travel in the same direction as cars do.
• Use bike lanes, sidewalks, or designated bike routes wherever you can.
• Don’t ride too close to parked cars. Doors can open suddenly.
• Stop at all stop signs and obey street lights just as cars do.
• Ridesinglefileonthestreetwithfriends.• When passing other bikers or people on the
street, always pass to their left side, and call out “On your left!”
• Use hand signals so drivers know which way bicyclists are turning.
A person who walks 10,000 steps a day will burn between 2,000 and 3,500 extra calories per week.
• See and be seen! Walkers should wear bright colors and, if walking at night, try to wearreflectiveclothing.Itisdifficultfordrivers to see walkers at night. Walkers should do anything they can to make it easier for drivers to see them.
• Use the sidewalk or walking path when it is available. If there is no path and they need to walk on the street, they should always walkagainsttraffic.
• Cross at intersections. When walking out between parked cars, drivers can’t see walkers coming.
• Always look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.
