BIOGRAPHIES OF PRESENTERS:
Marcella Corcoran Kennedy T.D.
Minister of State at the Department of Health with Responsibility for Health Promotion
Marcella Corcoran Kennedy was first elected to Dáil Eireann in the 2011 general Election to represent the
constituency of Laois/Offaly and was re-elected to represent the Offaly/North Tipperary constituency in
2016.Marcella Corcoran Kennedy was promoted to serve as Minister of State at the Department of Health with
Responsibility for Health Promotion in May 2016. During the 31st Dáil Marcella:
• Chaired the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation
• Was a member of Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht
• Was a member of the Joint Committee on Justice, Equality and Defence
• Chaired the Fine Gael Internal Committee on Justice, Equality and Defence
• Was a member of North/South Inter-Parliamentary Association
Keynote Speaker: Dr Mary Daly, NCCA
Dr Mary Daly, graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Studies from UCC in 1999 and went on to do a Ph D
from 1999-2002 which focused on the emotional and social development of young children aged 3-6 years. In
2004 she published a book based on her Ph. D called Developing the whole child – the importance of the
emotional, social, moral and spiritual in early years education and care. Mary has worked in the area of early
years for the past 16 years in a number of different capacities. Her main role involves working with the
National Council for Curriculum and Assessment as an Education Officer. Mary was part of the team that
developed Aistear, the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework. She was also involved in the development of
the Aistear Síolta Practice Guide (ASPG), an on-line resource (www.aistearsiolta.ie) to help practitioners use
our two national frameworks together to enhance children’s curriculum experiences. At present Mary’s work is
focused on the area of transition from preschool to primary school.
Máire Cooke, Waterford Childcare Committee
Máire works with Waterford Childcare Committee as a Childcare Services Development Officer since 2007. She
graduated in 1998 from W.I.T and has worked in both the Social Care and the Early Years sector prior to WCC.
She worked and was deputy manager of an early years service for nearly 10 years. In 2012 Máire returned to
education to complete a post graduate diploma in further education and more recently returned to WIT to
complete Higher Diploma in ECCE. As part of her role as development officer with WCC, Máire has been
involved in developing Building Blocks programme with 6 other CCC’s which supports managing change in
early years and preparing services for using ASPG. She has facilitated and supported services with this
programme in Waterford as part of her Development Officer duties.
Deirdre Lindy, Waterford Childcare Committee
Deirdre Lindy works with Waterford Childcare Committee as a Childcare Services Development Officer since
2008. She graduated in 2001 from W.I.T and has worked in the both the Social Care and the Early Years sector
prior to WCC. Part of Deirdre’s Development Officer role supporting services is her work as Children First Child
Protection and Welfare Trainer for Early Years training Practitioners and advising on policy development. In
relation to today’s conference, she is a member of the Healthy Waterford Steering Committee where she
assists in the #Kindwaterford Initiative, both through social media and the development of the annual Mayors
Health Week and ongoing initiatives of Healthy Waterford and #KindWaterford relevant to Early Life. Deirdre
recently co-presented a paper with Healthy Waterford on the #Kindwaterford Initiative to the WHO European
Healthy Cities Annual Conference in Pecs, Hungary.
Judith Ashton, Buddy Bench Ireland
Judith Ashton is co-founder of Buddy Bench Ireland, a well-being programme for children. She is qualified in
Bio-dynamic Psychotherapy and Massage Therapy. She did pioneering work in the UK in the 1980s introducing
massage therapy into the NHS and her ‘Touch for Healing’ Courses for Nurse Tutors at the University of Surrey
were highly recommended by the English Nursing Board.
Judith moved to Ireland in 1988, and was President of the Irish Massage Therapist’s Association for 12 years. In
1998 she founded The Blue Room Healing & Meditation Centre in Bennettsbridge, Co Kilkenny ( a multi-
disciplinary complimentary healing centre).
Judith is a qualified Health Creation Mentor, a previous Local Election candidate for the Green Party, was a
Board Member on the local Rape Crisis Centre, is a qualified funeral celebrant and has written many articles on
a wide range of topics. Buddy Bench Ireland won Social Entrepreneurs Award 2016.
Chelley Brennan, Jack and Jill’s Montessori, Tramore
Chelley Brennan is the Owner of Jack and Jill’s Montessori and has been a self-employed practitioner for 22
years. Chelley has recently completed her Higher Diploma in ECCE in W.I.T. She runs a small rural service
where importance is placed on immersing into the local community with huge emphasis in their curriculum on
outdoor play and activities. Jack and Jill’s participated in the #kindwaterford Kindness Initiative and as a result
of their project, they were one of 2 Early Years services who received a Buddy Bench and Awareness training
for the service in 2016. At Jack and Jill’s they believe it is never too early or children are never too young to
understand the importance of, and the power of kindness.
Joanne O’Toole, Crystal Kids Waterford
Joanne is a qualified Social Care Worker and has worked with young people for 7 years, specialising in trauma
informed therapeutic approaches to children in care. Joanne has integrated meditation and mindfulness
techniques in her work and began Crystal Kids in 2016 with the aim of offering a nurturing and safe space to
help young people cultivate deep connections to their hearts. Joanne has carried out workshops in Early Years
Services with children as young as 3, after school clubs and residential care with positive results witnessed.
Miriam Barrow, Counselling in Primary Care (CiPC)
Miriam Coordinates the Counselling in Primary Care (CiPC) service in CHO5 since its launch in 2013. CiPC is a
service for adult Medical Card Holders presenting with mild to moderate psychological difficulties and the
referral pathway is through GP’s and Primary Care Team members. CHO 5 receives in excess of 2,500 referrals
per annum and provides services to clients in 15 locations throughout the region. Miriam is a graduate of DCU
with a BA in Psychology and an MSc in Psychotherapy. She is currently undertaking a Doctorate in
Psychotherapy and her area of research is sexual desire.
Dr Maria Murphy-Griffin, W.I.T
Dr. Maria Murphy-Griffin is a lecturer in W.I.T. specialising in exercise physiology. Her primary degree is in P.E.
from Thomond College of Education (now U.L.). She then completed MSc in Sport Science in Loughborough
University; followed by Research on Weight training and Bone health in the elderly at Queens University,
Belfast, and a PhD in Exercise and the Heart studying between U.L. and Beaumont Hospital. She is very active
in terms of exercise and has 5 children who are all actively involved in sports of all descriptions!
Michael Dalton, Mindfulness Meditation Waterford
Michael is accredited by the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP) and
registered with the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP)He qualified as a counsellor in 2006 and since then has
worked with many clients presenting with broad ranging issues.
Michael has studied and practised meditation for over 16 years and trained with Buddhist, Taoist and other
masters. He has also taught many meditation courses and tutored in mindfulness with numerous groups in the
areas of Mental Health, Addiction, Social Care, Young Adults on probation from the courts and Family Support
Groups. Michael has also presented workshops on Mindfulness in Therapy to Counsellors and Psychotherapists
as part of their Continuing Personal Development (CPD).
Jacqui De Paor, Waterford Childcare Committee
Jacqui is a Development Worker with Waterford Childcare Committee since 2003. She qualified from DIT,
Rathmines in Early Childhood Care & Education in 1996, was a childminder for 1 year thereafter and then
progressed to set up and manage Naíonra na nDéise in 1998, prior to working with WCC. Jacqui graduated
from Carlow IT with her H.Dip in Early Childhood Education & Care, in 2014. Jacqui presented a paper at the
OMEP conference in 2015 on a selection of the collaborative actions that Waterford Childcare Committee
undertook similar to the “Gift of Kindness” book. As part of Jacqui’s role as a development worker, she was
directly involved with the “Gift of Kindness” Project and facilitated the workshop and supported the childcare
practitioners and children in engaging with the process. Jacqui is also a trained Síolta & Aistear Mentor and
provides information, support and mentoring to the childcare services; from formal Síolta QAP to information
awareness raising workshops on Síolta/Aistear
Fiona Power – Mulcahy, Tigh Súgradh, Clonea Lower
Fiona Power-Mulcahy is the owner/manager of Tigh Súgradh Childcare Service. Tigh Súgradh is a purpose built
private childcare facility, catering for 25 children at any one time. Tigh Súgradh was one of the first services to
provide full day care in the West Waterford area almost 16 years ago. Fiona began her childcare path by
completing a Fetac Level 5 & 6, followed by Montessori training, Special Needs training, Teacher training,
delivering Búntus start programme to childcare services, followed by a BA Honours Degree in Early Care
Education & Care. Tigh Súgradh is one of the Healthy Ireland pre-schools. They have just recently attained their
third green flag with An Taisce. Fiona is currently completing the leadership for Inclusion in the Early Years
Programme (Linc), and will then have the role of Inclusion coordinator in her service. Fiona is a part time tutor
delivering a range of childcare modules to students for almost 16 years.
