Dear New Hire:

Congratulations and welcome to the Federal Aviation Administration! As the Manager of John Wayne Airport

Traffic Control Tower (SNA ATCT), I’d like to take this opportunity to personally welcome you to our facility. We

are delighted you will soon be joining us as you embark on your FAA career. Air Traffic Control is a rewarding

career with many challenges, opportunities, and benefits. As a new employee, I’m sure you have many

questions. Let me take this chance to fill you in on some of the highlights of what awaits you when you report

for duty at SNA ATCT.

SNA ATCT is a Level 9 VFR Tower located approximately 35 miles south of Los Angeles in the city of Costa Mesa.

We have approximately 20 controllers and 4 supervisors. Our operating hours are from 6:00 a.m. 11:00 p.m.

Once you reach the facility, you will receive some initial orientation and then be assigned classroom training. At

or near the end of this classroom training, you will be assigned to a training team consisting of your supervisor

and at least two controllers who will be your On-the-Job Instructors.

Your work schedule during classroom training will be from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with

weekends and holidays off. Once your training in the tower begins, you will be assigned a schedule that lines

up with your instructor(s) so it’s important to be flexible from the onset. Remember the goal is your successful

certification.

Employment as an Air traffic Controller is one of the most unique, challenging, and satisfying jobs available. And

in addition to the unique work, employment in the FAA brings many benefits not always found in the private

sector including, once certified, a salary commensurate with other Federal employees, over 30 days of paid

absence per year, and automatic retirement and matching 401k contributions from the government.

• A “Be Back” time for breaks and lunch will be provided by the Instructor.– Be prepared to resume training at that time.

ACCEPTED CLASSROOM PRACTICES

• Only course related reading material is allowed in classroom

• Cell phones, iPods, PALM or similar PDA communication devices shall be set in the “OFF” position during classroom instruction

• If you are anticipating an emergency call, the device may be allowed in the classroom but shall be set to silent or vibrate.

� Government telephones must not be utilized for personal communications (either incoming or outgoing), except for emergencies.

• No food, gum, tobacco products of any type are allowed during classroom instruction.

• Drinks are permitted only in spill proof containers.

• Smoking is not allowed in any part of the building. The designated smoking area is outside at the picnic table.

FACILITY SECURITY

• An FAA ID Badge will be issued shortly after arrival to SNA. Badge gives access to facility building.

• A key may be issued to assist in accessing the facility until FAA ID Badge arrives.

• When FAA ID arrives, employee may elect to maintain possession of key.

• There are two separate codes for accessing the front gate and the Tower Cab. These will be provided to employee upon arrival to SNA.

• Personal vehicles may not be left overnight in facility parking lot unless permission has been obtained from the Facility ATM to do so.

separate classes

• Flight Data/Clearance Delivery

• Ground Control East and West

• Local 2 and Local Assist 2

• Local 1 and Local Assist 1

• Each class is approximately one week

Training Team

After completion of your initial classroom requirements, your Training Team will be established

The Training Team will consist of your Front Line Manager (FLM), your On-the-Job Training Instructors (OJTI’s), a primary and a secondary, and yourself

The Training Team will establish your On-the-Job Familiarization (OJF) hours, and discuss target and minimum hours for certification on each position.

After The initial Training Team meeting, and completion of the Flight Data/Clearance Delivery Class, On-the-Job Training (OJT) will start in the tower cab.

Proficiency Time (also known as “Pro-Time”) can be expected between certification on Flight Data/Clearance Delivery and the classroom for Ground Control, as well as each of the following positions and respective classes.
