THE BEAR FACTS THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE CAULFIELD BEARS FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUB MARCH 2020 EDITION Welcome to Season 2020 Welcome to the first edition of ‘The Bear Facts’ for 2020. The club’s newsletter has been in hibernation for a few years so we’ve decided it’s time to dust off the old boy and start putting together some monthly editions. And here’s the first edition for your pleasure. Our playing season is fast approaching with the footy season commencing their season on Sat 4 Apr 2020 when the boys take on the newly promoted Hampton Park at the home of football (aka Koornang Park). The lads began their training in Nov and regularly had 30+ players hitting the track in our pre-Xmas sessions. And the player numbers have improved since training resumed a few weeks ago with more than 60 players having attended pre-season training so far. They too had a handful of training sessions prior to Xmas and resumed their training in early Feb with strong player numbers in attendance. The girls kick off their season on Sat 28 March 2020 and will play a series of ‘grading’ matches over 3- weeks before getting into their regular season on Sat 25 April 2020. THE BEAR FACTS THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE
CAULFIELD BEARS FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUB MARCH 2020 EDITION
Welcome to Season 2020
Welcome to the first edition of ‘The Bear Facts’ for
2020. The club’s newsletter has been in hibernation for
a few years so we’ve decided it’s time to dust off the
old boy and start putting together some monthly
editions. And here’s the first edition for your pleasure.
Our playing season is fast approaching with the footy
season commencing their season on Sat 4 Apr 2020
when the boys take on the newly promoted Hampton
Park at the home of football (aka Koornang Park).
The lads began their training in Nov and regularly had
30+ players hitting the track in our pre-Xmas sessions.
And the player numbers have improved since training
resumed a few weeks ago with more than 60 players
having attended pre-season training so far.
Coach Chris O’Keefe joined our club as our senior
football coach last year and immediately set high
expectations of the playing group – and to the players
credit they’ve responded very well.
Matt Casey (L) and Chris O'Keefe
And the netball girls aren’t going to let the footy boys
out-shine them. They too had a handful of training
sessions prior to Xmas and resumed their training in
early Feb with strong player numbers in attendance.
The girls kick off their season on Sat 28 March 2020
and will play a series of ‘grading’ matches over 3-
weeks before getting into their regular season on Sat
25 April 2020.
We’ve appointed Jarrad Walker as our new
Head Netball Coach. Jarrad is an Advanced Level
2 netball coach and has a very impressive netball
resume having had coaching roles with other
football/netball clubs Echuca, Tongala & Riddells
Creek and VNL club Southern Saints.
He also coached the Victorian Mixed Netball team
to the National championships in 2017.
We’re excited to have Jarrad at the Bear Cave.

The Bear Facts – March 2020
The junior section of our club continues to go from
strength to strength. In 2020, we will field 17 teams
(incl 4 x girls-only teams) ranging from U8-U17years.
The junior Bears play on Sundays and their season
commences on Sun 26 Apr 2020.
The pavilion at Koornang Park will soon be refurbished
and extended which is great news for us.
The main aspect of these works is the extension of the
pavilion by approx. 7 metres toward the playing oval
with the front wall to be glazed and provide viewing
of the oval from inside the pavilion. The canteen/kiosk
area will also be extended.
The funding for this project ($1m) has been provided
by the State Government and I wish to publicly thank
Steve Dimopoloulos (State Member for Oakleigh)
for this grant.
Save the Dates
Some really important upcoming dates for you to put
in your diary are:
Sat 28 Mar 2020 Season Launch @ Hotel Brighton
Sat 25 Apr 2020 Past Players & Supporters luncheon
There have been some interesting times at SFNLHQ
with Doveton Eagles (who won the Div 2
premiership last season) getting themselves into
some serious financial strive (approx. $80k in debt)
and many players fleeing the sinking ship. Their
problems were created by a sole ego-tripper who
thought it OK to make promises and commitments to
players, coaches, sports trainers, etc that were not
realistic and the club is now on its knees. Fortunately
a couple of club stalwarts have decided to roll up their
sleeves to help resurrect the club.
It saddens me when local community sporting clubs
get into trouble and it saddens me even more when
they cease to exist – and we were recently in a similar
position (for different reasons than Doveton) when
our club almost ceased operating - so I wish the new
administration well in their attempt to restore their
club. Doveton will play in Div 3 this year and will be
closely monitored by SFNLHQ.
As for The Bears in 2020, let’s all continue to support
the club with passion. We’ve come a long way over
recent times to restore the club to be one of the most
respected & well-managed clubs in the SFNL
community.
We’ve enjoyed premiership glory on the netball court
on 3 occasions since we commenced a netball
program 5 years ago - and the flags hang proudly in
our clubrooms.
The 1st XVIII footy team came close in 2016 to
winning the elusive premiership and played in 5
consecutive finals’ series from 2014-2018 which is the
first time in the club’s history that any of our
teams have done so.
And from the energy & enthusiasm around our
playing groups at the moment, I’m predicting an
exciting time for the Bears on the footy field &
netball court in 2020.
Go Bears!

Bears Golf
Fore! Our social golf group (Bears Golf) teed off in
April 2019 with a fantastic round of golf at Cardinia
Beaconhills - and we’ve played another 8 rounds
since. Mostly, the group plays on the first Sunday
of the month (or every 2nd month during the
football/netball season) and it has proven to be a
great way to catch up with former team-mates.
Details of future rounds are:
Sunday 5 April 2020 @ Waterford Valley
Sunday 7 June 2020 @ Growling Frog
Sunday 2 Aug 2020 (Course TBC)
Sunday 4 Oct 2020 @ Eagle Ridge
Sunday 25 Oct 2020 @ Keysborough
Sunday 8 Nov 2020 (Course TBC)
Sunday 6 Dec 2020 (Course TBC)
Cost to play is usually $80pp (or
$300 for a group of 4 players)
and includes green fees and
lunch following the round.
If you’re interested in joining
the group, please contact
Darren Stait (Tel. 0407 559
383).
And thanks to The House of Golf & X-Golf Mentone
for their support of our golf program.
