COLLEGE PLANNING ASSISTANCE THIS FALL
❖ Visited with Seniors today during Study Hall -Seniors received
information about Naviance, requesting transcripts, letters of rec,
college visits at Marist, area events and helpful resources
❖ Counselors available for individual meetings
❖ Common Application help in Mid-October. We already held
one workshop August 20th.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR MOST APPLICATIONS?
Student information (family info., education, extracurricular activities, and

Transcript (students request this in Naviance after they submit their
application)
Official SAT and/ or ACT test score (these need to be sent directly from the
testing agencies- SAT & ACT)
Depending on the school, the application may also include:
Teacher’s letter of recommendation (1 or 2)
Counselor recommendation
SAT Subject Tests
Secondary School Report
Personal essay(s), and/ or short answer responses
An interview (not common, but sometimes recommended or required)

• Financial aid & scholarships may cover a large part of cost of attendance
• Community colleges offer substantial savings on tuition
• Private colleges may provide enough gift aid to make the cost to the student less than that of a public institution
• Oregon public universities have need & merit based aid

SOURCES OF FINANCIAL AID
Institutional aid – Scholarships and other aid given directly from the college that a student is admitted to.
State aid- For state financial aid info, go to www.oregonstudentaid.gov This is the site of Office of Student Access & Completion
Federal Aid- The FAFSA Prior Prior Year- Uses two years prior tax forms in the
financial aid process. (2017) Aim is to provide more accurate aid estimates, earlier in the process. Allows families to complete FAFSA beginning October 1 of senior year

All 3 programs cover cost of tuition and fees for 4
years for eligible students

INTERESTED IN AN OUT-OF-STATE PUBLIC
UNIVERSITY?
Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)
Study out of state in the West and pay only 150% of
resident tuition. Choose from 150 institutions
located in the 15 WICHE states.
These are competitive scholarships, but
requirements vary greatly from school-to-school.

What should students be doing now?
Research colleges online, visit colleges, and attend College Fairs
Evaluate SAT/ ACT scores, in relation to colleges they are interested in. Need to take/ retake a test?
Review college application requirements, and make a timeline of what needs to be done, and by when
Utilize other resources as needed (online resources, after-school sessions, talking to teachers, mentors, Marist alum, etc.)
Finalize list of colleges to which they are applying and enter this list into Naviance. For most students, aim to complete applications by mid-
December! J
GATHERING THE REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS
Request Letters of Recommendation, if needed, by:
October 15th for Early Action, Early Decision
November 15th for Regular Decision
Send official test scores to the schools you apply to (SAT/ACT scores must be sent via the testing agency -College Board/ ACT website)
Request transcripts through Naviance after you’ve submitted your application

Deadline Alerts!
University of Washington deadline is November 15
California UC and CSU system deadlines are November 30
Otherwise in most cases, colleges may have an EA or ED option anywhere from October 15-December 15, but if so, will also have a later deadline for Regular Admissions
