From the desk of . . . Greg brousse, Managing DirectorDear Plantation Bay Members,

With the arrival of summer comes the closure of another great season at Plantation Bay. The great season included many exciting events at the Club as well as wonderful conditions on the golf course and fitness/tennis facilities.

What is helping to fuel all these fun events is the increase in homes sales – both new and resale, which has equated to many new members at the Club. On that note, we look forward to everyone making new lifelong friends and enjoying themselves at the Club for many years to come.

Also what is helping fuel the great events is the superb staff at Plantation Bay. My sincerest appreciation goes out to Maria Tuohy, Janet Gallant, Frank Leonardo, Kathryn Policastro, and Executive Chef Robert Fortier, Sous Chef David Lani and our entire food and beverage staff for an incredible year that featured a host of great memories for all.

Lastly – a big thank you to all the Plantation Bay members for your continuous support. Nothing makes myself or the entire staff happier than to see everyone at the Club enjoying themselves. Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you at the Bay!

Sincerely, Gregory P. Brousse, Director of Operations

The 9 ball FliGhTsConsider the chart below to learn the 9 ball flights a golf swing can create. What causes the golf ball to go a certain direction is important to understand if a player wishes to change their existing ball flight. Having a better understanding of what causes a slice may help you change the ball flight to a straight shot or even a draw. Some key points to remember when working on ball flight is alignment and contact. If a player aligns right of the target they would be inclined to take the club head away inside and return the club head from the outside. Creating a figure eight move or an over the top. If A player aligns left of the target they would be inclined to take the club head away outside and return the club head inside or outside creating a push shot or a pull shot. As you can see the takeaway is very important to where the club head will return to hit the ball. This is where alignment becomes an important part of hitting the shot a player wishes to hit. Align your feet, knees, hips and shoulders to the line of the shot you typically play. If your ball flight is left to right align your body to the left of your target. If your ball flight is right to left align your body to the right of your target. This is important to your take away being on the path of the shot you are playing. Then take the club back on the path that matches your feet, knees, hips, and shoulders. Contact becomes the final step to the ball flights. All flights are affected differently when the club face is open, closed, or square as illustrated in the drawing below. The golf shot you play is affected by the path of your swing and the position of your clubface at impact.I hope these ball flights will help you get a better understanding of the path of a golf swing and what that path creates.

CDBWGA had a very successful year thanks to all of you. We hope you enjoyed the season and look forward to your participation in the league next year.

The charity tournament for the benefit of the Family Life Center for Abused Women located in Bunnell was the highlight of the season. We raised $4,283.93 for the center. Your donations were most appreciated. It was a worthy undertaking and we are very thankful that our members contributed to such a needy organization.

CDBWGA’s winners of the President’s Cup were Mia Poris and Denise Carr. Mia Poris was also this year’s most improved player in our league and she also had the most birdies for a total of 17. Quite impressive.

Congratulations to all the winners of the games, birdies and the participation points competition.. You were awesome!

CDBWGA’s opening day for the 2015-2016 season is Thursday, September 24, 2015 – shotgun at 9:00 am. Our member/member tournament has now been scheduled for October 15 and 22.

Have a wonderful summer. See you in the fall. God bless,

Ida Commins, President

Summer is here. Temperatures are up and the course maintainence departments are at their busiest. As all of you know, summer is when we perform the most rigorous cultural practices on the turf. Practices such as aerification, spiking, verticutting, topdressing and fertilization are preformed. I am frequently asked why must these practices be done in the summer. I would like to take a minute to answer that question. All of these previously listed practices, initially put stress on the turf. Also, all of these practices required heal in time after they are done. In the winter, turf growth in Florida slows dramatically. If these practices were done in the winter, it would be nearly impossible to heal in the turf, due to the slower rate of growth. I am also often asked, why are these practices necessary? I want to briefly explain the benefits of each.Aerification in its most basic terms is defined as, the exchange of gasses in the air, with gasses in the soil. In simpler terms, getting oxygen to the roots of the turfgrass plant. The life expectancy of a correctly built USGA green is 15 to 20 years. Without regularly scheduled core aerification, that lifespan is cut in ½. Aerification, while disliked by golfers, helps turf in several ways. It reduces compaction, helps drainage, reduces thatch, and promotes better air exchange. Why is verticutting important? Verticutting also helps the turf in many ways. It reduces thatch, promotes new growth, and reduces grain the in turf. When the turf is healthy, aggressive and frequent verticutting is essential to putting greens. Why do we topdress? All greens, no matter how well or poorly they are taken care of, build up organic matter in the soil. The main benefit of topdressing is to amend a portion of the organic material out and replace it with clean sand. Turf growth requires some organic material in the soil, but too much can lead to major problems. Problems like increased disease pressure, poor drainage, and imbalanced ph levels. Topdressing also helps greens putt smoother by filling in ballmarks and thin areas. We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer. Remember as always, we accept any and all prayers for no hurricances. See you on the course.

Fitness News

Fitness NewsWow . . . summer is here and with a vengeance; it has already been in the 90’s for days in a row, so with that, please remember how vitally important hydration is. Water, water and more water . . .did we mention to drink more water?

Our Red Carpet Challenge produced some very active winners who earned points through various activities toward an Oscar and the person with the most Oscars walked on the Red Carpet!!! To earn an Oscar, the participants had to acquire 1000 points. Our big winners, Karen Barry won 25 Oscars and Herb Hunter won 23. Runner’s up were Anne Einhorn who won 17 Oscars and Dave Trumbauer with 16. Congratulations to our winners and to all who participated.

Hopefully you are taking advantage of our GREAT FITNESS CENTER !! More and more studies are being conducted about the benefits of regular exercise. Some have labeled exercise “The Miracle Cure-All.” Here are just a few of the benefits:

• 31% reduction in cardiac mortality• 25-53% reduction in pain symptoms among osteoarthritis patients• 57% lower rate of prostate cancer progression• 10mm Hg drop in blood pressure among 31% of patients• 50-80% reduction in risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes• 30-50% reduction in risk of fall among older adults• 30% lower mortality rate

The significance of these findings emphasizes how exercise truly does improve your body’s ability to fight off pain and disease. Aging is a fact of life, but its challenges can be decreased and sometimes prevented by simple exercise. Fall prevention is one major factor among older adults. Falls can create potential for injury at any age. Physical activity helps by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. Water Exercise is highly recommended and for many, submerged movement can safely address the balance issues .. Many already have that “fear of falling” but the water is forgiving. They can attempt movement, make mistakes and miscalculations without the end result being a painful fall. The turbidity of the water provides an ideal training environment for enhancing balance by providing constant dynamic and unpredictable forces. Buoyancy creates an unstable environment that constantly engages the core muscles. These muscles help support the load on the spine, maintain a healthy back and enhance posture. The water’s viscosity and density also provides increased levels of resistance for a whole body workout and the unique properties of water can be used to “assist” as well as resist movement. Simply put, water exercise offers a great way to get a total body workout safely and effectively; not to mention that it offers a refreshing way to workout on a hot Florida day!

Each day we have the choice to improve our quality of life and one of those decisions is to be active or not. Even if you only exercise for 10 minutes, it is better than zero minutes; the point is to GET MOVING – Head to the treadmill , take a swim in our beautiful pool or join us for an exercise class . . . there are many options! After a good workout, how about a relaxing massage, or a refreshing facial, or even a waterless mani-pedi in our Spa. The choice is yours!!

Tennis News

iT’s hoT ouT There! here’s WhaT To Do

It’s hot out there! Here’s what to do-

For Floridians who play a lot of tennis, many of these things are a no-brainer. However, as we hit the heart of summer and early fall, review this checklist and be sure you are always prepared.

• Hydration: drink plenty of water or sports drink before you go to the courts and, of course, continue to replenish while you play.

• Wear wrist bands. They’re not expensive, last forever, and they keep the sweat from rolling down into your hand

• Replace your grip or use a fresh overwrap. Again, this is not expensive to do and gives you much better feel of the racquet so you hit more consistently.

• Bring a fresh clean towel to the courts and use it on the changeovers. On very hot and humid days, I also bring a small hand towel and wear it on my waistband to dry the racquet handle and my hand between points, if necessary.

• Sunscreen is a must! Florida is known as the sunshine state, which is great, but too much sun will damage your skin.

• Wear sunglasses. I was shocked to hear a leading dermatologist at one of our USPTA pro conventions say how our eyes can get damaged from sunburn!

• Stick a dry shirt or top in your tennis bag and change it between sets if appropriate. Guys can usually get away with a quick change right on court. Ladies, hopefully there is a restroom nearby.

• There is a really “cool” product on the market called “frog togg chilly pads.” When you wet this product it’s always cold! It’s great to wrap around your neck on changeovers to keep your body temperature down.

• Stretch after you play. This should be part of your “cool down”. Your muscles are warm, so they’ll stretch easier. Besides you’ll feel much better the next morning! Good Luck!
