SERMON NOTES—8/5/18 ”Facing Your Jericho”

LOOK UP! Joshua 5:13-16 (NKJV) And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?” So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?” Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

KNOW YOU MATTER. Joshua 7:10-15 (NKJV) So the Lord said to Joshua: “Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face? Israel has sinned, and they have also trans-gressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you... _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Matthew 1:1-5 The book of the genealogy[a] of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hez-ron begot Ram. Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon. Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse,... _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

STAY CONNECTED Joshua 24:16 (NKJV) So the people answered and said: “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Missions News by Ed Youngs

It’s “Back to School” season, and an exciting time for many. Howev-er, going back to school isn’t easy with approximately 2,300 Pasco County homeless children. Other families may be a bit more fortunate not living in cars or the woods, but they too may have difficulty provid-ing their children with necessary school supplies. So what can we do to ease the needs for those school chil-dren? No different than last year when Hudson FUMC delivered to Hudson Elementary School eleven boxes of school supplies. Let’s do it again!!!

School supplies will be received August 5th, 12th and 19th in the Church lobby or in the office during the week.

I recently read a book for a writing class I took. I chose to read Fanny Crosby, The Hymn Writer, by Bernard Ruffin.

I first heard of Fanny Crosby in church three decades ago. Sometimes during the singing time, the song leader would mention the hymn had been written by Fanny Crosby, who was blind. Some of the hymns written by her were “Blessed Assurance”, “Sweet Hour of Prayer”, “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior”, and “To God Be the Glory”. I’m sure most of you are also familiar with those hymns. I knew very little about Fanny until recently when I read the book by Ruffin.

Imagine being blind, going through life without sight, relying on Braille, electronic devices, a seeing eye dog, audio books, and other adaptations to make it through every day life. Now, imagine being blind in the early nineteenth cen-tury when none of those things were available. That was the world into which Fanny Crosby was born. Usually some-one who was blind during that time period was a helpless invalid, dependent on others. That is probably what most people expected of Fanny Crosby, who lost her sight when she was just a baby. However, her story turned out very differently.

Fanny was born in 1820, probably with normal sight. However, when she was a month old, she got an eye infection. The regular doctor was out of town, so another man claiming to be a doctor treated Fanny’s eyes with a hot poultice. The treatment scarred her corneas, which left her blind.

Fanny lived during the time when Christian music was transitioning from complicated, “heavy” music to lighter, simpler tunes that could be sung by people with little or no musical training. Publishers of gospel hymnals found “The Blind Poetess”, as she became known, was excellent at writing lyrics for songs. It’s estimated she wrote over 9,000 hymns during her lifetime. Publishers didn’t want to print hymnals consisting of hymns written primarily by one person, so Fanny developed pen names under which many of the hymns were published. In fact, she had over 200 pen names! Ruffin’s book is part of a series called “Heroes of the Faith”. Fanny truly was a hero of the faith, writing songs and tell-ing everyone she could about her Savior. Her songs have been sung around the world and are still popular in churches today.

If you are looking for a good book to read, I would recommend this one. (It’s available on Amazon.com).

Nancy’s Notes by Nancy Hitt, Church Administrator

A big thank you to Theresa Word for her hard work on the restrooms in the Church lobby. She gave of her time and talent to remove the wallpaper and paint the walls in the men’s and women’s restrooms. They look beautiful and we are so grateful for her servant’s heart.
