Welcome & Opening Remarks
Li KeqiangProf. and Chair
Department of Automotive Engineering, Tsinghua University
On behalf of the students and faculty members at the Department of
Automotive Engineering (DAE), Tsinghua University, first of all I would like
to extend a warm welcome to all alumni and guests at domestic and abroad.
Welcome to attend the forum for Tsinghua Centenary Celebration.
Tsinghua University will hold her Centenary Celebration soon. For the past
century, the university has always linked her development closely with the
country’s destiny and future, honor and disgrace, as well as prosperity and
decline, and has trained a large quantity of academic masters, business leaders,
and politicians. Upheld the university’s motto, Self-Discipline and Social
Commitment, people of Tsinghua have worked hard, forged ahead, and made
outstanding contributions to China’s prosperity and development, as well as the
world’s progress and civilization.
The DAE of Tsinghua University has been established since 1980, but its
history of educating automotive engineering talents can be traced back to
1932. It is a major base for cultivation of high-level talents for the automotive
engineering technology and management, as well as an important place for
automotive engineering research and development in China.
China automotive industry has been developed remarkably under the
sustained and rapid economic development in China. After exceeding sales
and production of 13 million vehicles and becoming number one automobile
producer of the world in 2009, China automotive production and sales both
have reached 18 million units in 2010, creating a new world record. Such
a huge industry scale has set up its uniqueness in technologies, innovation,
management, and competition. Facing to the future, the sustainable
development of the China automotive industry will experience a large extent of
uncertainties in technologies, management, and market. It is an important task
for the government, the automotive industry, and the academia to understand
these uncertainties, realities, and opportunities.
As the event of the Centenary Celebration of Tsinghua University, the DAE
will gather the alumni working in the government, the automotive industry and
the academia, the faculty and students, as well as the honorary guests from all
of the world to discuss about the future of the Chinese automotive industry
and focus on the twelfth Five-Year Plan of the country to provide strategic and
research support for the government to make its industrial policies and for the
automotive companies to make development strategies.
I do believe that with the joint efforts of our faculty and students, with the care
and support of our alumni at domestic and abroad and people of all circles, the
DAE is bound to have a better development of and make a greater contribution
to the higher education in automotive engineering and the development of
China , as well as the global automotive industry.
