Don’t panic; my title does not mean I’m into forecasting the end of summer. What I am writing about should give you comfort instead of panic: the freeze on prices through the end of the year, on products that families buy most during the fall. There are 65 products that are on the freeze list, meaning that even if costs go up for these products, Wegmans will not raise the retail price. Actually, counting all flavors and varieties of products, the total number is 355 items (we call them SKUs, stock keeping units).

There is even more cost uncertainty right now than there was in the spring, because of the worst drought since the 1980s in the Midwest Farm Belt. You have doubtless read about the effects on corn (ears with no kernels on the cob), soybeans and wheat. Shriveling crops mean higher prices and in turn that eventually leads to higher prices for pork, poultry, beef, milk and of course, grains and oils.

Very large growers of corn, wheat and soybeans will weather the losses, says the USDA, because they have significant crop insurance, with the government picking up 60% of the premiums and the farmer paying the remaining 40%. However, the drought is having a big impact on chicken farmers and cattle ranchers who have to pay record prices for feed, and food processors whose costs are rising.

As time goes on, the full impact of the drought will be realized, but for now, our merchants have tried to estimate the effect, weigh the uncertainty and come up with a list that balances the risks. The new list is heavy with fresh produce, 15 in total, and also includes roasting chickens, Italian sausage, frozen vegetables, deli meats and cheese, whole grain bread, yogurt, pasta and pasta sauce. Peanut butter is on the list, because new crops were abundant after the short supply of the previous year. We did have to take ground beef off the freeze list, although the price is remaining the same for now.

This seasonal freeze list is something our customers tell us they’re grateful for in unusual times like this. Families trying to deal with the economic uncertainty of the times or even personal hardship, can count on prices remaining stable for things they need to pack lunches and get dinner on the table.

The complete list is printed in this ad, good through the end of the year. As a reminder, the freeze list is complemented by our Consistent Low Prices on other products that families use most; these are always competitively priced to assure you that they are the lowest in the market.
