From this we can learn a number of things First of all, we see that mishaps and calamities affect Christians too. The difference for the believer is that God has promised that he will never leave us nor forsake us in our trials, and that he will supply all of our needs accord- ing to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. One way that he supplies those needs is through other believers, and that is what was happening through the collection in Corinth for the poor believers in Jerusalem. We also learn that giving to the Lord’s work is an act of worship, whereby we acknowledge that God is the one who provides everything we have in the first place, which includes what we are setting aside to give. And even though in our giving we are just returning a small portion of all that the Lord has provided to us, Paul adds the wonderful promise that “God is able to bless [the giver] abundantly” (2 Corinthians 9:8)! Finally, the Apostle Paul encourages the Corinthians - and us! - by telling them that their giving will result in offerings of praise and thanks- giving to God on the part of those receiving the gift. -excerpt from Daily Devotions with Jim Cymbala, Pastor at Brooklyn Tabernacle
