Monday | October 20th Topic/ Focus: Introduction to Immigration PowerPoint Guided NotesAIM #1: What was so attractive about the United States, causing millions of people to immigrate here?

DO NOW: 1. Copy down tonight’s HW (Chapter 20 -1 Practice Quiz 582-587) 2. Answer the two questions on the “DO NOW” worksheet you’ve been given. Read the graphs and questions carefully. Be ready to share.

Possible DO NOW Answersa. – More people were settling in urban centers compared to settling in rural

settings because the number of immigrants coming to America was skyrocketing. Most immigrants did not venture very farm from the city in which they had arrived.

b. – Answer: DI think that most people passed through New York City because most immigrants who were coming from North and Central Europe, were traveling across the Atlantic Ocean. One of the first major cities that immigrants from Europe could reach was New York City. NYC was also the home of Ellis Island which is where most immigrants were processed as they moved into America.

Tuesday | October 21st Topic/ Focus: Emma Lazarus Poem: The New Colossus AIM #2: How does the United States of America embody the land of opportunity?

DO NOW: 1. Copy down tonight’s HW (GRA 20-2, pages 590-595) 2. Take out last night’s HW (Practice Quiz 20-1) and leave it on your desk 3. Answer the questions following the primary source on today’s handout.

Possible DO NOW AnswerA. The only types of jobs offered to many immigrants at this time

period were “pick and shovel” jobs. These jobs were most likely associated with manual labor.

B. Not fair. The “padrone” said he would help get Panunzio and his friend a job if they paid him 50 cents a week.

C. A “shantee” was probably a word or phrase that referred to a very crowded, unsanitary place that workers used as a place to live. The shanty is described as having open bunks that were filled with straw for workers to sleep on.

Possible DO NOW Answer: A. to protect the immigrants against fraud and exploitation so that such traditions as they cherish with regard to America will not be lost in their first contact with us; to give them an opportunity to learn the English language and to secure such a working knowledge of our laws and institutions B. 1. Read the text on the Era of New Immigration that starts on the second page of today’s packet, INDEPENDENTLY.

2. After about 10 minutes, I will allow you to complete the graphic organizer that follows the reading on the last page. You may work on this with a partner or in small groups. You may use pages 582-587 of the textbook for further assistance.

3. After completing the graphic organizer, answer the question at the bottom of the page in complete sentences. You should answer this question on the back of today’s packet. (HW)

Thursday | October 23rd Topic/ Focus: Video – “The Long, Long Journey”AIM #4: How can we better understand the journey for new immigrants from their homeland to the United States?

DO NOW: 1. Take out last night’s HW and leave it on your desk 2. Answer the questions following the political cartoon on today’s handout

Possible DO NOW Answer:

A. The cartoon shows Uncle Same extending his arms to immigrants and the sign above him (“U.S. Arc of Refuge”) expresses an idea that people can seek refuge or settlement in America.

B. Listed on the sign, immigrants will not have to worry about the following:◦ No oppressive taxes◦ No expensive kings◦ No military service◦ No knouts or dugeons

C. Free education, land, speech, ballots, lunch

D. Many Americans might be offended by the idea that people from all over the world can simply enter their country and immediately receive all these rights/privledges, without having to do much to earn them. Americans may also be concerned with jobs being taken away from citizens and given to new immigrants.
