Futures20 Registration now OPEN

Futures20 Registration is now live! October 27-29 Futures20 will bedelivering the in-demand content you have come to expect from ourannual conference VIRTUALLY this year.

This year's theme, Building Unity in Transformation, will guide each day:Day 1 will focus on Ontario Transformation; Day 2 is First Work's AspireYouth Summit; Day 3 is Focus on Canada. Schedule, speakers, andprogramming will be announced in mid-September.

We are pleased to be able to offer discounted rates for First Workmember groups of 5 or more. The Early Bird rate is available now butwill increase on September 1st and will not be available after the 11th ofSeptember.

With this year’s Aspire Youth Summit, we are inviting youth free ofcharge to participate in the day’s programming. We encourage ourmembers to have your youth participate and will provide additionalmaterials to send to your youth.

Don’t forget to nominate the best of our members for the FuturesAwards! The winners will be notified ahead of Futures20and announcedat the Conference. Winners will subsequently be profiled on the FirstWork Website and in a social media campaign following the Futures20Conference.

Emerging Leader AwardThis award recognizes individuals whose energy and vision havefurthered the cause of youth employment in Ontario. They have alsodemonstrated vision, collaboration and commitment in their efforts toserve their clients and communities. To nominate an organization for theEmerging Leader award, click here.

Impact & Innovation AwardThis award recognizes projects and initiatives that demonstrate aninnovative response to an issue or challenge in the youth employmentsector, and that demonstrate promising outcomes and serve asinspirations for other service providers. To nominate an organization forthe Impact & Innovation award, click here.

Standing Committee on Finance andEconomic Affairs

The Ontario government is currently receiving submissions from thoseindustries hit hardest by the economic collapse caused by thepandemic. Through the Standing Committee on Finance and EconomicAffairs and their study on the recommendations relating to theEconomic and Fiscal Act 2020 and the impacts of the COVID-19 crisison certain sectors of the economy, organizations have the opportunityto submit recommendations and apply to speak in front of thecommittee through official oral submission.

We encourage your organization to submit recommendations forrecovery and apply to present if you wish. First Work has applied topresent and will be happy to receive your input if you would prefer not tosend a submission from your organization.

Non-profits have been asked to file their submissions and request topresent in the Small and Medium Enterprises category. The portal toapply to present and/or deliver your submission can be found here.

The deadline for written submissions is August 28 6PM. Furtherinformation can be found here.

ASPIRE Youth Survey

First Work’s Aspire initiative has developed a survey to learn from youthabout their career goals to inform the design of this year’s Aspireevents.

Our objective is to give an insight into specific industries that youth wantto be a part of and provide an opportunity to learn from and networkwith industry representatives. Participants in the survey will beenteredinto a draw for a $100 gift card.

All information provided will be used solely for internal purposes and willnot be shared.Preliminary deadline is August 31st.

Federal Government Update

Updated Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy CalculatorThe Canadian Government has recently implemented changes to theCEWS that broaden the reach of the program and provide bettertargeted support. They have now launched an updated and improvedCanada Emergency Wage Subsidy online calculator to accommodatethe changes.

Funding for Innovation in ApprenticeshipsThe Innovation in Apprenticeship Stream provides funding to supportinnovative approaches, best practices, and partnerships to address thechallenges limiting apprenticeship outcomes. The funding is availablefor non-profit organizations, but must adhere to the strict eligibilityrequirements, including targeted training for Red Seal trades. Applications are open until August 28, 2020 at 3:00 pm EDT.

Ontario Government Update

Automotive and Manufacturing Training SupportsThe Ontario government is providing funding to support up to 236Hamilton-area job seekers to train for careers and get practical on-the-job experience in the automotive and manufacturing sectors. Thetraining projects, delivered by McMaster University, include a programto help unemployed or underutilized employees learn newmanufacturing technologies, and internships and work placements tohelp postsecondary students and recent graduates learn the skills theyneed to launch a career in the sectors.

Ontario Funding Culturally-Appropriate TrainingThe government is providing funding to Nokiiwin Tribal Council toprovide culturally-appropriate training and programs to help protect thehealth and safety of workers from First Nations communities inNorthwestern Ontario by addressing mental health and workplaceviolence and harassment, as well as expanding supports for vulnerable

workers. The Nokiiwin Tribal Council will also implement activities andtools to support safer workplaces, homes and communities and engageyouth through creative storytelling exercises and artistry to foster safetyand mental health.

Grant Opportunity – Ontario Trillium FoundationThe government has redirected $83 million in Ontario TrilliumFoundation funds to support COVID recovery through the ResilientCommunities Fund. The grants will support rebuilding the capacity ofeligible non-profit organizations that have been impacted by COVID-19. Ontario will provide grants between $5,000-$150,000 for one (or more)of five activities:

Organizational capacity building/training for rebuilding (includingresearch and development); mental health and wellness supportsPrepare to develop new sources of funding and finance (includingpublic-private partnerships and social finance)Adapt/reimagine programming (e.g., personal protectiveequipment, technology, volunteer supports)Procure equipment or renovate space (capital costs)Create and/or adopt new approaches for organizations to worktogether to meet the needs of communities (e.g. professionaldevelopment, knowledge and data sharing)

Initial intake deadline: September 2nd 2020Later intake deadline: December 2nd 2020

The Trillium Foundation will be hosting multiple Q&A webinarsbeginning on the 10th for the month of August.

Application FINAL CALL – Digital Access Support forUnderserved CommunitiesThe $150 millionImproving Connectivity for Ontario program(ICON)application portal is now open to provide supports for reliablebroadband and cellular service in underserved and unserved parts ofthe province. Any areas across Ontario that do not meet the nationalstandards for broadband speeds would be eligible for provincial funding.

The preliminary application deadline for the first intake of the ICONprogram is August 21, 2020.

Virtual Youth Expo This year’s theme will be centered around STEM (Science, Technology,Engineering and Mathematics). We are hoping to introduce newcomer

youths (14 – 29) to the exciting world of STEM through a day of hands-on workshops and inspirational speakers.

We have 3 breakout workshops that will be facilitated by RyersonUniversity, Ontario Tech, & Cryptochicks.
