NORTH EAST WEEKLY 14th August 2014 www.northeastweekly.com Est. 1997 Issue 866 Last week the Nats Government announced that they intend to stop the Crown Estate Commissioners charging rent for the use of the seabed in the Highlands and Islands. There was no mention of the huge annual rents being paid to the Crown Estate Commissioners by the people of Peterhead or the £100,000,000 of quays fund- ed by the people of Peterhead and the EU that have being handed to the Crown Estate Commissioners. As has been seen with the AWPR, where the people of the North East have had to pay £150,000,000 to get the project going, while those living in the Central Belt have had to pay nothing towards billions in capital projects such as roads, railways and bridges. The Nats Government are clearly running an anti North East agenda despite the North East contributing massively to the national economy. Further, the £150,000,000 holiday camp at Peterhead for Central Belt criminals was built on the back of £50,000,000 legal costs and £100,000,000 being paid out in compensation because the so called Human Rights of criminals had been broken over ‘slopping out’. Yet, as prisoners have show once again, it is a breach of Human Rights to deny democratic rights. When the Nats and the unelected crony cabal who have hijacked Peterhead’s Harbour drew up a grant application for the Smith Embankment Quay given to the Crown Estate Commissioners, they were supposed to draw up a Human Rights report showing that the Harbours and Government fully compiled with Human Rights regulations and directives. As the democratic rights of the owners is clearly a Human Right, both the Harbours and the Nats falsified the EU grant application which allowed £33,500,000 to be illegally removed from the people of Peterhead and the EU. It would appear that the only way the Nats Government are going to up hold the Human Rights of the Community of Peterhead, is for the Community of Peterhead to join the Central Belt criminals in their £150,000,000 holiday camp paid for by the decent hard working people of Scotland.

Tribute to NE Journalist Well-known agricultural journalist, Ed-
die Gillanders, has taken the annual
‘Unsung Hero’ award, presented annu-
ally by NFU Scotland’s North East Re-
gion at Turriff Agricultural Show.
Eddie, currently editor of Farm North
East magazine, has almost 50 years of
experience in journalism and publishing
and has made a sterling contribution to
covering key farming and rural issues
in the North East and the rest of Scot-
land.
In making the award of an engraved
crystal decanter at Turriff Show, Re-
gional Chairman Roddy Catto and NFU
Scotland President Nigel Miller both
paid tribute to Eddie’s tireless work, his
promotion of the farming sector and the
trust, integrity and professionalism he
has shown over the years. The award
sponsor, Malcolm Allan also expressed
warmth and admiration for Eddie’s
work.
The organisers were successful in keep-
ing the award secret from Eddie before
springing their surprise on him at a
drinks reception at the Show earlier this
week. Speaking after receiving the
award, a ‘gob-smacked’ Eddie said:
“Now I have recovered from the initial
shock, I want to pass my sincere thanks
and appreciation for the most
unexpected and undeserved honour
conferred on me by the North East
region of NFU Scotland
“I have always enjoyed a good relation-
ship with NFUS, both locally and
nationally, during my near 50 years in agricultural
journalism and related activities and any success I've
had as a journalist has been entirely due to the ready
assistance, understanding and patience of the North
East farming community and especially the members
and office-bearers of the union over the years.
“Members of the union give up an enormous amount
of time, particularly when they reach office-bearer
level, to represent their fellow farmers - a commitment
I've always admired - and I can't help thinking that
there are many members in the North East region who
are more deserving of this award than me.
“I would like to express my appreciation to those who
put my name forward for this award. The crystal
decanter will be treasured and will be a constant
reminder of many happy years reporting on NFUS
meetings and events.”

NSPCC Scotland has said that contacts to its ChildLine service
reveal the “huge impact” of difficult family relationships, with
this issue proving the top concern for children and young
people contacting local bases in 2012/13.
Acknowledging that many children across Scotland will have
found the extended break difficult, ChildLine Service Manager,
Susan Dobson, said that tensions at home could be causing
more harm than we realise:
“Last year (2012/13) ChildLine bases in Scotland counselled a
total of 16,627* young people about family relationship
problems. One of the main areas that saw the biggest increase
in contacts was concerns about parents’ divorce and separation,
which saw a rise of 171 percent to almost 600 counselling
sessions.
“Our counsellors at bases in Aberdeen and Glasgow found that
13% of all contacts they received over the course of a year re-
lated to issues at home, with children and young people dealing
with a range of distressing problems. This could be anything
from parental break-ups to sibling arguments, strict parenting,
negative responses to sexuality and the impact of family health
issues.
“Some of these children need somewhere to vent, but for many
they’re facing a really difficult time at home and are desperate
for reassurance and a safe space to share their fears.”
A child, aged under 11, told a counsellor at our Glasgow base
how difficult their parents’ break-up has been for them: “I need
some advice. I feel like I’m stuck in the middle and have to
make everyone else happy all the time. When I spend time with
my Mum I know that my Dad feels down and then when I go to
see my Dad then my Mum will feel down. I find it really
difficult to talk to them about it because I know it’s hard for
them both but I hate feeling guilty all the time.”
A new partnership is looking to significantly reduce the tragic toll of people who are killed or seriously injured on Scotland’s farms and crofts each year. Figures published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reveal that over the past decade almost 80 men, women and children have died on Scottish farms and significantly more have been badly injured as a result of farm-ing activities. That brings a catalogue of heartbreak and misery
to numerous Scottish families and rural communities each year. Launched at the Black Isle Show in the Highlands last week, the Farm Safety Scotland Partnership is committed to improving the safety record of those who live and work on Scotland’s farms and crofts. Working together, NFU Scotland, NFU Mutual, HSE and Scottish Government has produced a new campaign leaflet “Working Together to Save Lives”. It outlines the four most common dangers on farms – Falls, Animals, Transport and Equipment – and urges farmers not to leave their safety to FATE. The statistics for the last decade show that 13 people have been killed on Scottish farms by falls when working at heights; nine people have been killed in incidents involving livestock; 26 people have been killed when their vehicles have overturned or they have been struck by a moving vehicle and six people have been killed when they came into contact with working machinery.. NFU Scotland Vice President Allan Bowie said: “Tragic incidents in the past few days across the UK and Ireland remind every-one that farms can be dangerous places so it is important that everyone on a farm takes the necessary steps so that they can stay safe while farming. The Farm Safety Partnership intends to change behaviours and attitudes by promoting the steps that can be done to reduce the risks of common farm jobs. Most people will be able to recall a close call situation that could so easily have resulted in serious injury or even fatality. By adopting some simple steps as part of everyday working practices we can reduce the number of accidents and deaths on Scotland’s farms.”

Rabbit awareness week 2014 The Scottish SPCA fears more rabbits than ever are being
neglected, mistreated and forgotten about after rescuing a record
breaking number of bunnies.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity is growing increasingly
concerned at the number of animals arriving in their care and is
urging members of the public to think very carefully before
buying a bunny. As part of Rabbit Awareness Week, which runs
from 11th – 17th August, would-be owners in Aberdeenshire are
being asked to consider taking on a rescue rabbit.
Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn, said, “In 2013 our Drumoak
based rescue and rehoming centre took in over 100 rabbits, a
figure which has been increasing year on year.
“This worrying trend demonstrates why we need to raise
awareness of the hardships many pet rabbits face.
“Some rabbits arrive in our care in a terrible state having been
denied basic nutrition and veterinary attention, while others are
sadly forgotten pets children have grown tired of.
“Thankfully, the severe cruelty cases are in the minority. The biggest issue is rabbits being put in a hutch and left at the bottom of
the garden, with many enduring a life of solitude and boredom.
“Often the only interaction they have is a brief visit from their owner to bring food and water. Many owners even find this to be a
chore and it is these rabbits which tend to be dumped outdoors or handed into one of our rescue centres unwanted.

Work to begin on historic Tarlair
pool complex
Work will begin this week (w/b Au-
gust 4) to stablise an historic open
air swimming pool on the north Ab-
erdeenshire coast which has lain
mostly unused for many years.
Around £300,000 is being spent to
arrest the decline of Tarlair Swim-
ming Pool Complex, conserving tra-
ditional features and preparing it for
future uses.
Owned by Aberdeenshire Council,
the Category A Listed building near
Macduff is unique for its integrated
Art Deco style building design and
open air swimming pool layout.
The project is being delivered by
specialist conservation consultants
and engineers Addison Conservation
and Design.
The firm’s ideas about how to stabi-
lise the structure were approved by
the Council and from this a project
emerged to deal with the dilapidated
boating pool and its immediate sur-
roundings.
This area was given priority as it is
the worst ravaged by time and tides.
It will be repaired in such a way as to
restore its original function and ele-
gant appearance – the boating pond
will not be filled in.
Concrete will be used to make all the
curves, as the original, and the chil-
dren’s paddling pool will also be
brought back within the original ar-
chitectural layout.
The scheme will also incorporate a
gentle access ramp as there has been
no way of getting disabled visitors
down to the poolside.
Many older people visit Tarlair to
remember the bygone days and a
ramp will help them safely move
around the place and everybody else,
including the model boat club, will
benefit from it.
Chairman of Aberdeenshire Coun-
cil’s Banff and Buchan Area Com-
mittee, John Cox, said: “We are
committed to stabilising Tarlair and
preserving the category listing, and
though it has taken a long time to get
to this point, I’m delighted to see
work start.
“This initial work will target the area
worst affected by exposure to the
elements and I hope that collabora-
tion and dialogue with interested
parties will continue to bear fruit in
terms of bringing the whole complex
back into use.”
Vice chair Brian Topping said:
“Tarlair was in its heyday one of the
top outdoor locations for leisure in
