Re-bid for the next Weeds CRC – Kathryn Galea • Committee formed to lead the re-bid • Pulling together the Queensland component • In the last bid – the WSQ played a significant role in the

formation of the bid • Request that WSQ consider providing input into the

next bid – come up with ideas, themes or thoughts – identification of gaps

• Initial Expression of Interest to be submitted January 2006

• WSQ requested that some information be e-mailed that can then be forwarded to members for comment

Queensland Pest Animal Symposium – Bruce Wilson • Idea is to run these symposia – they be offered in

alternate years to the weeds symposia. • Need to form a society/organising committee • Concept is to hold it in October 2006 in Toowoomba • Aware that there may be some competition for

registrations as the same audience is targeted for both forums

Review of Pest (emphasis on weeds) research within NR&M – Bruce Wilson • Budget limitations are creating the need for a review • Series of recommendations has been put forward –

reduction needs to happen somewhere • Reduction identified in the area of herbicide research –

mainly conducted at AFRS – Sherwood. • Maintains the balance of investment – 60% weeds &

40% pest animals. • Major issue arises in replacing the extension role that

Trevor has played – getting information out to people • Two-pager to be sent to WSQ regarding the outcomes

of the review • WSQ members discussed directing a response to Chris

Appendix 1 – Presidents report WSQ Presidents Report 2004-05 In the past year WSQ members have been involved in numerous activities, which will be covered in more detail in subsequent reports. However, special thanks must go to the committee involved with the successful running of the 8th Queensland Weeds Symposium held in Townsville, June 2005 – the final CD production highlighted the diverse range of topics discussed at the symposium. An issue raised at the Symposium was the lack of a current publication (book) describing the Weeds in Queensland. “Weeds of Queensland” was published in 1977 and has been the cornerstone for weed science students, etc for identification purposes. Should WSQ be involved in updating this publication or creating a new book to cover the diverse range of weeds found in Queensland? This is an issue that should be debated within the next WSQ executive. I have been involved with the WSQ executive for the past seven years, the last year as your President, and I would like thank you for that opportunity and hope that others on this past executive have enjoyed the ride as well. Chris Love President.

Appendix 2 – Newsletter report Newsletter Report for the 2005 WSQ AGM As new Weedshine editor in 2005, I was grateful for the early support and advice of former editor, Rebecca Breaden, who coached me through the Summer edition. Rebecca emphasised the popularity of the Weedie People Profile feature, and the value of including articles from North Queensland where possible, and I have endeavoured to follow through with these established features. Several new features were also trialled, some being more successful than others; Sheldon Navie’s Weeds in Focus drew upon his vast botanical knowledge and comprehensive photo bank to bring us regular articles showcasing emerging weeds – a popular addition. Other features such as Ask Uncle Trev and Volunteer Opportunities received limited reader input, so were excluded after two editions. Most recently, the Spring edition included a Book Review, an Editorial and a Letter to the Editor and time will tell whether these features persist. It would be wonderful to have more feedback and constructive criticism as to the content of the newsletter, as this is most helpful for the editor. Three of the four newsletters published this year were ‘bumper’ 12-page editions, thanks to the tremendous input of Society members. Thank you to Chapter representatives and other Committee members for their regular input, John Swarbrick for his recent book review, and other members from across the state who reported on local events and weed trials for the benefit of readers. I am resigning from the position of Newsletter Editor at the 2005 AGM to focus on the ‘tail end’ of my studies. The position has been a most rewarding one, and I have truly benefited from meeting and corresponding with WSQ members. Thank you to WSQ for providing me with this opportunity to develop my editorial skills. I wish the incoming editor the very best of luck, and will be more than happy to assist them with organising the next edition, if required. Rowena Gray

Appendix 3 – Webpage report WSQ Website Report (2005) The Weed Society of Queensland website (www.wsq.org.au) continues to be an important medium for providing readily accessible information about WSQ and its activities. Earlier in the year, maintenance of the website largely involved uploading and updating information about the 8

th Queensland Weed Symposium in Townsville.

In more recent times there have been a few new additions to the website. A news page has been added which, it is hoped, will provide regular information about the societies’ activities and more general information about current weeds related issues in Queensland. It is hoped that this will also encourage members to regularly visit the website to see what has been going on. Members and others are therefore encouraged to submit any such news items that they feel will be of interest to other members of the society and casual visitors to the website. Such items should be sent to the following email address: [email protected]. A section on new and emerging weeds has also recently been added to the website, which is similar to the ‘Weeds in Focus’ section that has been included in recent WeedShine Newsletters. This section intends to provide information on species that are of particular interest in Queensland at present (i.e. whether they are newly detected weeds or have recently become of great interest for other reasons), but are not well known in the community. This will hopefully enhance education about these species. In the coming year, a new species will be added to this section of the website each month. It is also envisaged that future ‘Weeds in Focus’ newsletter articles will be directly linked to these website articles, which will provide further information and numerous colour photographs. Finally, it is hoped that the website will undergo a re-design in the coming year. Sheldon Navie WSQ Webmaster 2005

o CAWS invited NZPPS to become affiliate member of CAWS. NZPPS have accepted. CAWS is now in process of modifying our constitution so that NZ can become a full member. NZ joining has implications with name change and our biennial conferences.

o CAWS is contributing an article in each Weeds CRC newsletter ‘Weed watch’. This

is being done instead of trying to produce a CAWS newsletter.

o CAWS decided Australia will not submit a bid for the 2009 APWSS conference, which will now be held in Pakistan.

o Annual Student Travel Award has been increased to $3000.

o Created a new award – Annual Early Career Weed Manager Travel award worth

$2000.

o CAWS was a gold sponsor of the Tasmanian Weed Society’s conference to celebrate their 10

th anniversary. Queensland and SA were bronze sponsors.

o Some meetings and discussions have been held to initiate a Weed Society in NT.

o CAWS is lending funds to help with publication of a new Australian weeds book

written by Sainty. Should be launched at the new AWC.

o The 15th AWC will be held on 24-28

th September 2006 in Adelaide.

o Queensland is organising the 16

th AWC in 2008 ☺☺☺☺

Appendix 5 – South East Queensland Branch Report

2005 has been a busy and productive year for the Weed Society. Members of the South East

Queensland branch have been involved in many of this year’s activities, including the Weed

Symposium in Townsville, Ag Ed in Toowoomba and September’s Crop Weed Symposium in

Dalby.

The branch also hosted another “warm up” Winter meeting of the Executive Committee at the

Kurrawa Surf Club on the sunny Gold Coast in August. It was a pleasure to see the smiles of

appreciation on the faces of our frosty Darling Downs colleagues!

In May of this year I also had the pleasure of representing the Society at Sell TNQ in Cairns.

Hosted by the Cairns & Region Convention Bureau, this was an opportunity to assess Cairns

suitability as a location for the 16th Australian Weeds Conference in 2008.

2006 promises to be another busy year with planning already underway for our biennial

Tweed Heads Weed Forum in May next year. Organised in conjunction with the progressive

NSW North Coast Weed Advisory Committee, this combined forum will look to build on what

was a well attended and very well received forum in 2004. I urge any of you interested in

participating in the organisation of this forum to register your interest with the South East

Queensland Rep at your earliest opportunity.

Another exciting event also fast approaching is the 9th Queensland Weed Symposium,

proposed for 1st - 4

th June 2007, in South East Queensland. We will be discussing the

upcoming Symposium in more detail and preparing to be swamped with offers to join the

organising committee later in this meeting! It is safe to say that the organising committee will

certainly have their work cut out to meet the very high standard set by this year’s excellent

Townsville Symposium.

After 5 exciting and very enjoyable years as South East Queensland Representative I feel it is

time to give someone else the opportunity to take on this fulfilling position. I look forward to

assisting in the organising of the various upcoming events and retaining my involvement in

the Society, perhaps in another role if required.

In closing I would like to extend my thanks to the other members of the Executive, once again

it has been a pleasure to be a part of such a great team. The Society is fortunate to have your

guidance and considerable enthusiasm.

Thank you.

Darling Downs Lockyer Branch Report

AgEd (13 and 15 April) This years theme was ‘Weeds are space invaders!’, designed to get school children thinking about how weeds are introduced and spread. Given the task of preparing for a trip to an unspoilt planet called Utopia, the students had to ensure that they did not take any weeds with them. Some tough decisions were made as to whether weeds could be spread by animals, garden mulch, socks and various other items. Once the students had decided on what they would take on their trip, they had to ensure that the space ship (aka. the ute) was also weed free. The students were asked to place dots where they thought weed seeds could get caught. This interactive part of the display was a favourite for many of the student groups. In total, almost 450 students visited the display. A big thank you to those who dedicated their time to this worthwhile cause. If we have sufficient support, AgEd is running in 2006 and we again have an opportunity to participate.

Crop weed symposium (8 September) A successful one day event was held in Dalby showcasing up to date information on how to better ‘win the battle’ against summer cropping weeds. The event drew a crowd of 69 interested people including growers, agronomists and council workers. In total, 14 presentations where given by Queensland and New South Wales weeds experts on the following topics:

• Cropping program CRC for Australian Weed Management • Summer fallow weeds – impacts on wheat • Managing summer weeds in sorghum • IWM in Australian cropping systems • Latest on residual herbicide recommended practices • Operating principles and proposed registration requirements – Spray drift • Lippia – Phyla canescens • Glyphosate resistance.....Coming to a paddock near you? • Development of an IWM system for GM Cottons • Glyphosate resistance modelling in Roundup Ready cotton • Control of volunteer Roundup Ready cotton with Hammer herbicide • Morphological and molecular characterisation of Echinochloa spp. in Australia

• Fleabane management • Summer weed control – Dow Agrosciences

Speaker notes were also made available for those that attended the event. Many thanks to the presenters and everyone who attended and contributed to the interesting discussion throughout the day.

Appendix 7 – North Queensland Branch report

The highlight of 2005 culminated in hosting the successful 8th Queensland Weed Symposium

in Townsville in June 2005. This event provided an excellent opportunity to showcase a broad range of weed management activities in the north and to highlight our current and potential weeds. The mild winter climate of Townsville, ocean views and the friendly northern hospitality provided the perfect background for the biennial symposium. Coordinating the event gave purpose to a diverse, weedy group of 15 people from Townsville and surrounds to come together as an organising committee. Very few committee members were Weed Society of Qld members but all shared a common genuine interest in weed management. In this era of technology and emails, issues with 150km distance between organising committee members was overcome to a large extent. Shane Campbell (chair of the organising committee) is presenting a Summary and detailed Final Report of the 8

th Qld Weed

Symposium to the WSQ AGM. The North Queensland Branch has been “inactive” since hosting the 5

th Qld Weed

Symposium in Cairns in 1998. Possibly the organising committee will now slide back into inactivity until the next major regional challenge. As the North Qld Representative, it is difficult to find few new activities that fit within the aims of the Weed Society of Queensland and which complement but do not overlap with current local and state government training workshops, community field days, research networks, etc. There is also the logisitics of dealing with the diversity in interest between coastal, rangeland and aquatic weeds across wide expanses of North Queensland. The WeedShine newsletter remains a focal point to promote regional best management practice and highlight emerging weeds and regional weed management issues. I urge all Nth Qld members to contribute articles to the newsletter to ensure their membership to this statewide group retains relevance. A sincere thank you to the executive of the Weed Society of Qld, for their support and understanding during the year. Thank you especially to President Chris Love for his remarkable quick responses and wealth of information. I look forward to ongoing membership and activities with the Weed Society.

Appendix 8 – 8th Queensland Weeds Symposium 2005 report

Summary report

• Overall a record number of 251 financial delegates attended the Symposium, with the

general feedback received suggesting that the event was well run, represented value for money and covered the main issues currently associated with weed management in Queensland.

• A summary of the 74 evaluation sheets (28% of attendees responded) received back

from delegates is attached, and includes some good suggestions on how future events can be improved.

• The organising committee initially planned for an attendance of somewhere between

170-200 delegates but were conscious that Caloundra had attracted in excess of 230. This was taken into consideration with venue selection and fortunately all venues adequately covered the extra registrations. However, feedback via the evaluation forms indicated that some of the venues were just about at maximum capacity and could not of catered for any more people. This was particularly the case for the trade display area, the venue for the Symposium dinner (Southbank) and the Picnic Bay Surf Life Saving club (where the optional spit roast on the Strand Dinner was held). The main auditorium for the formal presentations was also fairly cramped, but the layout could have been altered a little to improve the comfort of delegates. One last minute change of venue for the welcome reception resulted in some confusion for delegates with some turning up to the wrong place. Fortunately they were pointed in the right direction and made it in time for the function.

• As expected the majority of delegates (94%) came from within Queensland (see

graph below) with an excellent spread right across the state. Other states represented included New South Wales (3 delegates), Victoria (1 delegate), The Northern Territory (4 delegates) and Western Australia (3 Delegates). There was also one international visitor in attendance from New Zealand.

• In terms of organisations that the delegates worked for (see graph below), the

majority were from either Local or State Government Agencies. Federal Government, community groups, land holders/land mangers/utilities, University/Tafe and agribusiness comprised the remaining 37% of attendees.

• In terms of registering:

o 72% of delegates obtained early bird registrations. o 30% of participants were members of the Weed Society of Queensland. o 94% of registered delegates attended the whole symposium, with the

remaining 6% attending one of the days. o See graph below for further details.

• Of the 261 Delegates, 231 went on field trips along with an additional 11 partners. Delegates and partners were given a choice of three field trips, which resulted in 78 going to inspect rangeland issues as part of the dry and dusty tour, 113 finding out more about issues in the surrounding Townsville area though the Creek to Coast Tour and 51 visiting the Burdekin District on the Wet Wild and Organic tour. Before departing on these specific tours, all delegates visited a main demonstration site where they were able to witness some new techniques available for weed management. Feedback from the delegates suggested that the Demonstration site was worthwhile, all though the responses varied markedly from those that would like to have seen more on show at the site to those that thought it took up to much time, leaving less time for the following field trips. The Ellrott plough proved particularly popular, with delegates appreciating the opportunity to see it in action. With regards the field trips, a general comment that came through was that the organising committee tried to fit too much into the tours, resulting in them being rushed for time.

• Social functions were well attended by delegates and feedback suggested that the venues and food was generally good and of a high standard. An estimated 160 people attended the welcome reception, 258 were present at the official symposium dinner and the optional spit roast on the strand attracted a total of 167 people. The large numbers that attended however met that some venues were very full, making conditions a little cramped. The evaluation forms offered lots of suggestions regarding the social functions, which can be taken on board for those involved in future committees. One common comment was that there were too many talks/presentations/entertainment on the night of the official dinner leaving little time for discussions between delegates at their respective tables.

• In total, $25000 (GST Exclusive) was received through sponsorship and trade

displays. A total of 11 official sponsors came on board; four gold (Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Thuringowa City Council, Powerlink Queensland, Dow AgroSciences), two silver (Ergon Energy, Macspred) and five bronze (Specialist Weed Control, Silvan, Drum Muster, QuikCorp, Nufarm). Besides sponsors who were entitled to trade displays as part of their package, four other exhibitors participated (Chemcert Training Queensland, WONS, CRC for Australian Weed Management and the Weed Society of Queensland (complimentary)) giving a total of 11 trade displays. Two companies (Dwyer Aviations Services and Exa-Min Technologies) provided $250 each for the insertion of inserts into satchels.

• A draft profit and loss statement is attached. In total it suggests that the Symposium

has generated a revenue of $1520.08. It is important to note however that this includes one outstanding delegate registration ($220) and some sponsorship funding that Townsville City Council had committed to support the Welcome reception ($850). The symposium secretariat is confident that they will retrieve this outstanding money. Furthermore, one additional expenditure that has not been progressed at this stage is for production of CD’s which is listed as one of the items delegates would receive. The organising committee has the information ready for production of these and the anticipated cost is around $1000. Proceeding with the production of these would however reduce the profit of the Symposium to almost a break even status. It would be appreciated if the Executive of the Weed Society of Queensland could recommend either proceeding with production of CD’s or not. The conference secretariat will shortly be sending a check to the President of the Weed Society of Queensland as reimbursement of the $9000 seed money that was supplied to kick start organisation of the symposium. Finances should hopefully be finalised within the next month allowing for a cheque to be made out to the Weed Society of Queensland for any remaining revenue generated from the symposium.
