Now that the Winter Mixed sales are finishing--Goffs today and tomorrow wraps them up-- next up are the 2-year-old sales, kicking off at Barretts early next month, and many of these 45 sires will have their first representatives at the upcoming juvenile sales. Perhaps unusually, perhaps also a sign of the times, 23 of the 45 stand or stood in Europe, as opposed to 22 in North America. Eight sires, which each had between 39-68 yearlings sell from their first crops last year, registered averages above $80,000. Of those eight, five stand in Kentucky, two in Ireland, and one in Great Britain. There=s no Sea the Stars or Frankel in the sire crop (in fact, there are probably a smaller number of sires with first foals 2011 and 2012 than has been the case for many years), but there was still a clear leader on yearling average: Claiborne Farm=s Blame (Arch), whose 39 yearlings (fewest of the eight $80,000+-average sires) averaged $183,666. Even more impressive, his median was $170,000--93% of the average, indicating a very high uniform standard of individual. The only other NA/EU F2012 sire with a six-figure median was Taylor Made=s Eskendereya (Giant=s Causeway), whose median for 47 sold was an even $100,000. Trained by Al Stall, Jr., Blame finished his 3-year-old year by defeating older horses in two nine-furlong Grade II=s in Kentucky, the Fayette H. at Keeneland and the Clark H. at Churchill. His only defeat in five starts at four was when second to all-the-way winner F2013 sire Haynesfield (Speightstown) in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, but payday came when Blame held off Zenyatta in the 2010 GI Breeders= Cup Classic at Churchill Downs (Beyer 111) for his third Grade I win that year. Cont. p7 DUBAI WORLD CUP NOMINATIONS RELEASED Nominations have been released for the G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 29 at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, with 341 in total given a chance at the world=s richest race. Freshman Sires (cont. from p1) His Breeders= Cup win may not have endeared him toZenyatta=s legion of racetrack fans, but Blame has beenpopular with breeders all the way so far, including withEuropeans, as Blame=s sire Arch has always had a goodrecord, and been popular, in Europe. The 2010 GI Kentucky Derby involved three otherhorses who will have their first 2-year-olds racing thisyear and were among the five in North America whichalso averaged over $80,000 with their first crops ofyearlings in 2013.Eskendereya was the Derbyfavorite after winning the GIIFountain of Youth by 8 1/2 lengths and the GI WoodMemorial (Beyer 109) bynearly 10, but he was injuredthe week before the Derbyand retired the week after. Itlooked significant that, givenhis hefty number of 47 sold, the market carried him to aclear second-best among2013 yearling sale debutants, with an average of$129,659 (all sale data from TDN=s Instatistics tables). His $100,000 median was a healthy 77% of hisaverage, considering the high number sold, too. WinStar=s Super Saver (Maria=s Mon) won the 2010GI Kentucky Derby in Eskendereya=s absence, and thiswas the same race in which Lookin at Lucky (SmartStrike) was nearly put into the inside rail, as I describedin my column a couple of weeks ago (click here) in thecontext of Smart Strike as a sire of sires. Of the fiveNA/EU sires which averaged over $80,000, SuperSaver, at $20,000, was the only one who went to studfor under $30,000, so the fact that he had no fewerthan 65 yearlings average $100,803--over five timeshis entering stud fee--is very impressive. His medianwas $80,000, also--79% of his average--and again, with so many selling, it tells you there were a lot ofgood-looking yearlings by Super Saver in themarketplace last year. As we detailed a couple of weeks ago, Coolmore=sLookin at Lucky bounced back to win his next three, including the GI Preakness, the GI Haskell (Beyer 106),and the GII Indiana Derby before running fourth, fromthe 12 hole, to Blame and Zenyatta in the GI Breeders=Cup Classic. But he did add the 3-year-oldchampionship to his 2-year-old Eclipse of 2009, whenhe was undefeated except for being beaten a head fromthe 13 hole in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile. A winnerof five Grade I races in all, 64 yearlings by Lookin atLucky averaged $86,826 last year. His median of$67,500 was 78% of his average. Cont. p8

“These two sales show why we have to not get too wound up about Winter Mixed Sale results: Fasig February was well down on average but nearly even on gross – reflecting the catalogue – but the gross was still triple what it was three years ago. This sale and their October yearling sale have proven big winners for the company. The top horse at Arqana February was a jumper, but that’s Winter Mixed Sales for you. These close out with Goffs February today and tomorrow”.

He ran big figures towin the GII Fountain of Youth (Beyer 113) and GIFlorida Derby (Beyer 111) at three, and at four he wonthree more Grade I=s, including the Donn H. in anoff-the-graph Beyer 121 and the Met Mile. In fact, hewas the big 1-2 favorite when Blame got up to beathim by a head in the 2010 GI Whitney at Saratoga. Thebeneficiary of a lot of the late Ned Evans= good mares inhis first crop, Quality Road finished third among NorthAmerican F2012 sires on 2013 yearling average, with68 yearlings averaging $109,735. Three European sires also averaged the equivalent ofover $80,000. Coolmore=s Rip Van Winkle, who is byGalileo, but not out of a Danehill mare, won threeGroup 1=s at a mile and 10 furlongs, and ran second infour others, including to Sea the Stars in the G1 EclipseS. when both were 3-year-olds. His first foals in 2012impressed the judges, 28 weanlings averaging theequivalent of $87,327, with a median of $73,687--84% of his average. >Rip= was the leading EuropeanF2012 sire by yearling average last year, with 64yearlings averaging $114,137. Also over six figures onaverage was Tweenhills= Makfi, the horse who was justabout the first to put his sire Dubawi--and his trainerMikel Delzangles--on the map, when he scored a 33-1upset in the 2010 G1 English 2000 Guineas. He wenton to prove this was no fluke when defeating Goldikova

later that year in the G1 Jacques le Marois, and in facthis only two defeats in six career starts (all at three)came at Ascot, which he clearly didn=t like. Makfi mademore headlines when Qatari Sheikh Fahd Al Thanioutbid a French syndicate to stand him at stud. Makfiaveraged $108,670 with 54 yearlings sold last year. The third European F2012 sire to average over$80,000 is Ballylinch=s Lope de Vega, who emulated hissire Shamardal by scoring the French Classic double ofthe one-mile G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains (French2000 Guineas) and the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club--the>new,= 2100-meter French Derby. Lope de Vega alsohad 54 yearlings sell, which averaged $83,565. Eight more sires averaged between $50,000-$75,000, four on each side of the Atlantic, with threeof the four on each side being either very good2-year-olds or sprinters. In North America, Darley=sDesert Party (Street Cry), a $2.1-million 2-year-old whowon the 2008 GII Sanford S. at Saratoga, has been>shuttling= between Kentucky and Sequel Stallions inNew York. He had 37 yearlings average $72,789,including a $460,000 filly who topped the Fasig Julysale. Airdrie=s Majesticperfection, by Into Mischief=s sireHarlan=s Holiday, was a complete rocket himself, winning five of his six starts (all at four), including theIowa Sprint H. (Beyer 117) and the GI A.G. Vanderbilt(Beyer 115), in which he defeated subsequent GIBreeders= Cup Sprint winner and Eclipse champion BigDrama by nearly three lengths. A total of 44 yearlingsfrom his first crop averaged $64,443. Cont. p9

Just behind him was Spendthrift=s Warrior=s Reward(Medaglia d=Oro), winner of the 2010 GI Carter H. Hehad 66 yearlings average $63,711. Darby Dan=s Tale ofEkati (Tale of the Cat) won the GII Futurity at two, andthe GI Wood Memorial (nine furlongs) and the GI CigarMile at three, in 2008. The 38 yearlings from his firstcrop averaged $58,000 even. In Europe: Coolmore=s Starspangledbanner, anAustralian-bred by Choisir who was a dual Group 1winner >down under,= was bought by Coolmore andcame to Europe where he scored the notable six-furlongdouble of the G1 Golden Jubilee and G1 July Cup in2010. He had 18 yearlings from his first and only cropaverage the equivalent of $64,845, but sadly hedeveloped fertility problems and was retired fromcovering. Derrinstown=s Arcano (Green Desert) was bought intraining for Shadwell=s Sheikh Hamdan and won the G1Prix Morny for him on his next start, but didn=t winagain. However, his first foals sold well in 2012, and hefollowed it up last year when 53 yearlings from his firstcrop averaged $61,095. Britain=s Newsells Park=sEquiano, by Acclamation, won the five-furlong G1King=s Stand S. at Royal Ascot twice, so he was aserious speedball. The buyers liked his stock, too, as 66yearlings from his first crop averaged $58,010. Alsoover the >half-a-hundred= mark was Highclere=s PacoBoy (Desert Style), a Group 1 winner at three (sevenfurlongs), four, and five (one mile). He had 60 yearlingsaverage $52,997. And that=s not all, not by a long way. There were 29other sires with nine or more yearlings sell from theirfirst crops last year. History tells us between a thirdand 40% of top sires are horses who go to stud for$15,000 or less, so there are plenty more among thissire class with chances to make sires. There are 13more, in fact, with 2013 yearling averages between$40,000-$50,000. Beginning with the 2-year-old salesnext month, and then the 2-year-old racing which is notmany more months away, we=ll start to see which ofthe candidates look like making the grade. Why horse racing beats football, rugby and other sports “Research conducted by Deloitte shows racing consistently costs lessthan other major sports, such as Twenty20 cricket, Football Leaguegames, a round of golf, domestic rugby and Premier League football -and other competing leisure activities. It’s good news for courses likeGoodwood and Fontwell, who have done much in recent times to keepticket prices down and encourage families to go racing at affordablerates.” Chichester Observer

Bloodline Bragging: El Prado “There is a saying in the Thoroughbred racing world that “class willalways tell,” meaning that a horse with the bloodlines, the athleticismand the heart will usually cross the finish line first even if the odds saydifferently. As it turns out, that class often “tells” in second careers aswell. Retired Racehorse Training Project

B-Flay Thoroughbreds, BarryWeisbord & Robert & Joan Masterson (Ky). T-J Toner. Thieves Guild (Medaglia d=Oro), a 3-year-old filly whograduated impressively last Saturday, is the product ofthe 90 North Racing syndicate, which has focused on building asmall, talented stable byidentifying horses with buriedtalent for a bargain price. JustinNicholson, the 28-year-oldpresident and owner of 90 NorthRacing, inherited a strongfoothold in the racing industry, and he=s looking to share it.Nicholson=s approach hasallowed him to offer peopleaffordable stakes in racehorses. AI=ve had a great time owninghorses, so this is a chance forme to stay involved in thebusiness while bringing newpeople in,@ Nicholson said. Nicholson=s father, Ronald, got involved with racingin the mid-80s, buying horses in a partnership calledKimran Stables with the hope that Justin would sharehis passion. AMy dad was in the business from when I was two orthree years old and one of the reasons he got involvedwas that he wanted to have something to share withme,@ Nicholson said. AHe was an older guy and didn=tknow if he=d be playing too many sports with me, butracing was something we could share.A Ironically, Nicholson grew up allergic to horses, so hisexposure to racing came on the business side. Studyingthe sport from that perspective prepared him to takeover his family=s involvement in the business. Nicholsondecided to expand his involvement in late 2011, whenhe started 90 North Racing using the network he andhis father had developed throughout the racing industryas a foundation. AThe syndicate is basically making public the formulathat we had been using privately,@ Nicholson said. AWeuse the same trainer, Jimmy Toner, who has workedwith us for 30 years, and the same network of people, and make them available to people interested inownership.@ Right now, the syndicate has a stable of six horsesand about 40 clients partnering in those horses.Nicholson said that, while he would like to grow thenumber of owners involved, he sees advantages tokeeping the stable small.

AI call it a boutique operation, so I don=t see it gettingbigger than 10 horses, and we might stay right aroundfive,@ Nicholson said. AMy goal is to be hands on andgetting to know all of the owners--a lot of our clientsare people who are doing this for the first time and arelooking to learn about ownership--so I want to makesure I=m available to our clients.@ The syndicate=s focused approach also allows themto spend more time developing horses that largeroperations might overlook. Nicholson estimates thatmost of the horses the syndicate has purchased havebeen in the $50,000 to $75,000 range, and haveranged from yearlings to horses of racing age. Withthese relatively cheap purchases, the syndicate hasworked to identify horses who have potential that itsprogram can cultivate. AOur goal is to fill a niche in this market where we tryto buy horses that we think have talent and who wethink we can improve and see if they break through intostakes-type horses,@ Nicholson said. Thieves Guild was purchased privately by 90 North asa yearling after she RNA=d at the 2012 KeenelandSeptember sale. Nicholson said that he was impressedby her pedigree, especially considering that she fellwithin 90 North=s price range, but knew that she wouldneed time. AHer hind end was practically above her head--she wasin the middle of all kinds of growth spurts--so we knewshe was going to be a project,@ Nicholson said. ABut wethought that buying a filly with pedigree would give usa chance to make it to a higher level if we were patientand let her grow into herself.@ Instead of entering Thieves Guild into training rightaway, Nicholson and his team opted to turn her out fortwo months to let her mature physically. AIt was a smallthing to do, but I think it made a big difference becauseif we pressed on her too early I think we would havehad bad results,@ Nicholson said. Cont. p2

TODAY’S INSIGHTS

The wait paid off. In her first start at the FairGrounds, Thieves Guild finished second, losing by ahead after dueling gamely with a more experienced fillydown the stretch. The finish was more impressiveconsidering the race was moved off the turf--thesurface her pedigree suggests she would be strongeston. AShe ran huge that first time out. She had beenworking well in the mornings, so we weren=t surprisedthat she ran well, but we didn=t expect her to run thatwell,@ Nicholson explained. Given her strong performance on the dirt, the grouphad to decide whether to go with their initialexpectations and return to the turf or keep her on themain track for her second start. The group, again, trusted her pedigree and entered her over 5 1/2furlongs on the lawn in New Orleans Saturday. ThievesGuild responded, rallying from fourth to take the lead inupper stretch and driving home to win by three lengths. AIt was really nice to see,@ Nicholson commented.AWhen you make the decision to be patient with a filly,it=s a very special feeling to be rewarded for that.@ While her early performances have been impressive, the syndicate wants to make sure Thieves Guildcontinues to develop. AShe=s still green--you can see that especially whenshe=s changing leads--and physically, every time I seeher she is bigger and more proportioned. So I would bereally surprised if she didn=t continue to develop fromhere,@ Nicholson said. AWe=d like to try to stretch her to7 1/2 [furlongs] over the turf course at the Fair Groundsto see what she can do. We=ll have to see what ouroptions are. We hope she will be a consistent stakesperformer down the road, but right now we just wantto make sure she gets there.@ Right now the syndicate is in a similar spot. AWe=ve managed to build a small stable, but we havea lot of horses that are on the cusp,@ Nicholson offered.AWe=ve identified talent which is what we set out tofind, and we=re just sitting hoping that somebody isgoing to break through and put us on the map.@ --Michael Illiano Click here to share this story
