ARiding Thoroughbreds has always been my passion and my calling,@ Dominguez said in a statement. AWhen I was 13 and watched my first horse race in Venezuela, I knew that I would become a jockey, and my riding career has brought happiness and success beyond what I ever expected. Thus, it is extremely difficult for me to announce that, due to the severity of the injuries I sustained in an accident at Aqueduct Racetrack on Jan. 18, 2013, my professional riding career has come to an end. While I hoped, and even expected, to be able to return to the saddle, as a result of my injuries and, upon the advice of my treating physicians, it has been determined that I will no longer be able to pursue my career as a jockey. I want to personally thank my family, fans, and fellow riders for overwhelming support in the months since my accident.@ The 36-year-old Dominguez suffered a fractured skull when his mount, Convocation, clipped heels and he was thrown to the ground. He won numerous meetriding titles and many of our topraces en route to becoming NewYork=s leading rider for each ofthe past four years. ARamon=s accomplishments--including the last three EclipseAwards as North America=s top

jockey--only tell part of the story, though. He hasepitomized class, both on and off the racetrack.Universally respected by his fellow riders and belovedby fans, Ramon has built a towering and well-deservedreputation that serves as a standard for all futurejockeys. It has been a true privilege to have him in theNYRA riding colony and we wish him and his family thevery best in this new chapter of their lives.@ Added Alex Waldrop, president and CEO of theNational Thoroughbred Racing Association, added,ARamon Dominguez leaves an indelible mark onThoroughbred racing and his profession. Dominguez was also recognized by his peers and waspresented with the George Woolf Award at Santa Anitain 2012. ARamon Dominguez is one of the classiestjockeys to have ever won the Woolf Award,@ said SantaAnita President George Haines. AWhile we know thisdecision was difficult and very disappointing to Ramonon both a personal and professional level, wecongratulate him on a career that will no doubt result inhis induction into the National Museum of Racing=s Hallof Fame in the near future. Ramon=s retirementunderscores the dangers of his profession and we knowhe will continue to be an invaluable member of theracing community in whatever role he chooses forhimself and his family. It was a distinct honor to haveRamon and his agent, Steve Rushing, with us to acceptthe Woolf Award last year and we want to wish themboth all the best.@

Velazquez, Meyocks Speak on Behalf of Guild... Along with his fellow jockey Javier Castellano, Hall ofFame rider John Velazquez accepted Dominguez=s 2012Eclipse Award at ceremonies held the day after theincident at Aqueduct and gave a heartfelt speech abouthis colleague. Velazquez, who serves as the presidentof the Jockeys= Guild, issued a statement yesterday, saying, ARamon Dominguez is one of the greatest ridersof all time. His fellow riders and his fans have had thepleasure of seeing his passion for the sport and hisdrive for perfection in all he has done. I strongly believethat because of his accomplishments on and off thetrack, he belongs in the Racing Hall of Fame. He is oneof the best advocates for racing that this sport has everhad. We will miss his contributions on track but hopehe will remain actively involved in the racing industry. This can happen to any jockey, and we all know therisks. However, with Ramon=s injury, and now hisretirement, I will continue to focus my efforts to makethis sport safer for every rider at every track and toensure riders and their families have adequate safetynets to cover catastrophes. He is blessed to have awonderful wife, Sharon, and a terrific family, and I amhonored to have him as one of my closest friends.@Terry Meyocks, the national manager for the Guild, added, ARamon=s performance over the years hasshown his passion, determination and drive. In all myyears in the sport, Ramon remains one of the bestriders I have ever had the pleasure to work with.

AHe has been a tireless advocate for improving safetyat racetracks, and while the owners, trainers, fans andthe sport will miss seeing him ride, I am hopeful Ramonwill continue to be actively involved in racing. The Guildvalues his contributions as a current board member, and we look forward to his involvement in racing in thefuture, in whatever capacity that may be. I personallywant to wish Ramon, Sharon and their sons, Alex andMatthew, all the best.@

Trainers Reflect on Dominguez’s Retirement... In the wake of jockey Ramon Dominguez=s retirementannouncement, several trainers offered their reflectionson a championship career Some of Dominguez=s biggest wins last year cameaboard Little Mike (Spanish Steps), who won theGI Breeders= Cup Turf and GI Arlington Million. AHe was a big part of some of the biggest events inmy career, for sure, with Little Mike and I=m not surewe could have done it without him,@ said trainer DaleRomans. AI mean, he was a horse nobody believedcould go a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half, andfor some reason, he and Ramon got along. He got himto go the distance and relax and do the right thing. I=mjust very thankful to have had Ramon for those races. Iwish I had him on him this year.@ AI hate that he has to leave under thesecircumstances,@ added Romans. ABut, he surely doesn=thave anything left to prove and without a doubt he isgoing to be successful in whatever he chooses to do.@

Another horse that made a mark on Dominguez=srecord-breaking 2012 season was Alpha (Bernardini),who he rode to an exciting dead-heat victory in lastyear=s GI Travers S. AHe fit Alpha very well,@ said trainer KiaranMcLaughlin. AHe is a great rider and he rode him well. Igive him a lot of credit for staying after him in the lastfurlong. I thought we were beat at the eighth pole andhe stayed after him and kept riding hard to get there forthe dead heat. It was my biggest win as a trainer and Iwas happy he was part of it. He is just a wonderfulperson. AIt=s a big loss for Thoroughbred racing across theworld really, that he is having to call it quits,@McLaughlin continued. AHe is a great rider, a greatperson, and a great ambassador to our sport. Hopefullyhe will carry on in some capacity in our industry. Itwould be great to see him be able to carry on in ourindustry because he is such a great person and a greatfamily guy. No one ever says anything negative abouthim.@ New York Thoroughbred Horseman=s AssociationPresident and trainer Rick Violette Jr. said Dominguez=sretirement will leave a void in New York racing. AIt was a shock to hear the announcement today thatRamon was retiring,@ Violette said. AHe has alwaysshowcased the very best that New York racing has tooffer, not only through his ability as a rider, but also asone of the classiest people in the sport. That he will besorely missed can=t be overstated, but we wish himmuch good luck in the future, and sincerely hope thathis future includes continued involvement in horseracing. Racing will always need role models likeRamon.@

COT CAMPBELL

Dogwood Stable=s colorful President W. Cothran ACot@Campbell sat down with the TDN to answer a fewquestions following Palace Malice=s GI Belmont S.victory.

How did you celebrate after the Belmont?

CC: We went back into the city and went to The PostHouse steakhouse with my granddaughter, son-in-lawand Anne and I ate lobster. By about 10:30 we were

like balloons that had a pinstuck in them. We sort ofcollapsed and flew back toAiken (South Carolina) thenext morning.

How does this win compareto Summer Squall=s 1990 GI Preakness S. win?

CC: Well, it=s pretty hard tolook back 23 years and saythis was different than that. They were both fabulous. Iwould say that the response

from the public has been overwhelming this time. I=venever heard from this many people in my life. I didn=tthink I was unpopular, but I didn=t know I was thispopular. I=d say the response has been greater, but Ican=t compare the actual feelings of the day. They wereboth wonderful, and when you win a race like that it=slike throwing a stone into a pool. The ripples just keepgoing out and out and out and out.

After Summer Squall=s Preakness win, did you everthink you=d find yourself in the winner=s circle afteranother Classic?

CC: Yes, I sure did. In fact, in 1996 I tried to bet$100,000 in Las Vegas that Dogwood would win aClassic before the year 2000. They wouldn=t take thebet, but that shows a certain amount of hope that I=dwin one.

You had previously announced that you were going toscale back your racing operation. Does this win changeanything?

CC: I don=t think it does. I=m doing about what I wantto do, and I love what I=m doing and would never wantto be without it, but we once carried 65 horses andnow we=re down to about 30. I like that level and itmay drop down some more.

You once worked as a sportswriter. Did you ever thinkthat one day you=d be the one getting interviewed?

CC: No, I don=t think I did. I was strictly a minor leaguesportswriter and gravitated into other things. It nevercrossed my mind. Like much of life you sort of easefrom one thing to another and doors open andopportunities are there.

A JOURNEY DOWN PALACE HOUSE LANEStory and photos by Liesl King What better place to find oneself on the eve of RoyalAscot than in the birthplace and home of horse racing:Newmarket, England. In a town where the 3,000horses, residing in 75training yards, have right ofway, it is almost impossibleto move without comingacross a horse. Evenknowing that most of the16,000 inhabitants are insome way related to thehorse industry does notprepare one for the sight ofhorses popping out of gateways or strolling past theshops on their way to the gallops. Yet, venturingslightly off the beaten track, I discover a place whereonly their ghosts reside.

It is in a little street innocuously called Palace HouseLane that I find myself staring at an official lookingyellow paper. Stuck onto solidly padlocked white gates, which give no indication of what lies beyond, is anotice proclaiming something about an Application forBuilding work on a Listed building. I happen to bestanding in front of the gates of what was once themost famous yard in Newmarket--the Palace Housestables. Nowadays, few know of its existence, butmere meters off the High Street, tucked away behindthese unimposing gates, is arguably the mostextraordinary piece of history. Picture the scene; it=s 1605 and King James I istraveling between his hunting lodges in Royston andThetford, when a fog descends, forcing him toovernight in the town of Newmarket. After a goodnight's rest, he awakens in the morning to the sight ofthe rolling grasslands of theNewmarket Heath and itssurrounding forests. He realizeshe has just discovered theperfect place to go hawking andhunting. So, what does any goodking do when he discovers aperfect spot for his favoritesport? He builds a Royal Palace,of course. Sadly, the EnglishCivil War intervened, and downcame the Palace. War over andwith Charles II on the throne, thelure of Newmarket is simply toomuch, and a new Royal Palace isbuilt further down along what isnow Palace House Lane togetherwith the obligatory Royal Stables. It all went swimmingly as racing thrived inNewmarket, but as with all good horse stories, therehas to be some scandal. In 1791, we have the Escapeaffair. At a time when horse racing was run as a seriesof heats, George IV, the Prince of Wales, instructed hisjockey to prevent Escape from winning his first heat.Escape then duly ran away with the second heat andthe Prince collected handsomely. However, secrets arenever safe for long and the Prince was rumbled. TheJockey Club had no choice and found him guilty. ThePrince promptly sold off all his racing interests and leftNewmarket. The town went into a steady decline andby the early 19th Century Palace House and its stablesfell into disrepair and were sold off.

Yet as in all good stories, along came a knight on awhite charger, with Baron Myer de Rothschildpurchasing and restoring Palace House and its stables in1857. Occupying the stables is Jem Godding, whopromptly trains Macaroni to win the 1864 Derby, thusrestoring Newmarket's reputation as a training center. Today, behind the white gates stands the originaltrainer's house surrounded by boxes on three sides. Anarchway leads one into the "new yard" built by Leopoldde Rothschild in 1903, complete with an ornate stonefountain in the center. The Palace House stablecomplex, while sturdy, has clearly seen better days. The grass almost obscures the fountain and the doorsare all boarded up, yet in the stables themselves, onecan still catch a glimpse of a glorious era long gone by.Solid troughs with beautiful green tiled surfaces abovethem are positioned in two corners of the roomy stalls,a cornice runs around the ceiling and a single high setwindow provides light. As Iwander through the stables, thepeeling paint and cobwebsforgotten, I can almost hear thestamp of hooves, the swish of atail and a suspicious snort fromthe occupants of so long ago. Itseems as if time stands still herein the Palace House Stables, andit is in the tack room at the endof the corridor that I am mostreminded that this was once aworking yard. A large woodensaddle rack fills the room, whileornate bridle hooks grace thewalls and beneath them, dentedand rusted, hang two hoof oilpots. There is a palpable sadness in the air, as I look out atwhat arguably was one of the "first" training yards inNewmarket. However, there is an ambitious projectunderfoot to restore the Stables to their former glory. The buildings will be used to house a new NationalHorseracing Museum, a new National Gallery of BritishSporting Art and the Edwardian Inner Yard, built byLeopold de Rothschild, will be adapted to house popularretired equine heroes. So when you next visit Newmarket, be sure towander off the beaten track, down Palace House Laneto the Palace House Stables. The cobwebs and thepeeling paint will be gone, but if you close your eyesand listen carefully, you might just hear the call to huntas James I rides out with his falcon or the sounds ofMacaroni crunching his oats as he lazily flicks a fly withhis tail.

HK POSITIVES DUE TO FEED CONTAMINATION Officials at the Hong Kong Jockey Club announcedyesterday that a second registered feed product forracehorses was suspected as having been contaminatedby Zilpaterol, a banned substance. Park Stud Shuts Down Breeding Shed: As a result of the recent outbreak of EquineHerpesvirus (EHV-1) at Woodbine Racetrack outside ofToronto, officials at Park Stud in the province ofOntario have decided to close the breeding shed aheadof schedule and conclude the 2013 breeding season forits stallions. There has been no sign of the virus at thestud. AIt was a difficult decision, as we have alwaystried to accommodate our clients in any way we can,@said Park Stud=s Warren Byrne. AWhile the EHV-1 virushas not been detected at Park Stud, the mere threat ofthe virus miles away at Woodbine, and the fact that itis so easily transmittable, poses too much risk to thestallions, the horses residing on the farm, and ourclients= mares. We would like to thank all of thebreeders who bred with us in 2013. We had a trulyamazing season and will look forward to 2014.@ ParkStud stands multiple Grade I winner and Breeders= CupTurf champion Court Vision, and fellow Grade I winnerVictor=s Cry.
