The review was conducted, under the instruction of Sheikh Mohammed, by the UK=s former Metropolitan Police chief commissioner Lord Stevens. Completed through the global advisory firm Quest, the review looked at the activities of Al Zarooni, who was banned from racing for eight years by the British Horseracing Authority, as well as the discovery of unlicensed medications on a Dubai Royal Air Wing flight at Stansted airport and at Moorley Farm, owned by Sheikh Mohammed=s Darley Stud, in Newmarket. The report noted that the seizures at Stansted and Moorley Farm resulted from Amanagement failings, insufficient oversight, and complacency within the organization,@ although no link was found between the Al Zarooni case and the seizures. AAlthough HH Sheikh Mohammed's equestrian operations are unusual in their size and scope, our review has highlighted the complexities of a regulatory framework that is a challenge for the entire equestrian industry,@ Lord Stevens told PA Sport. "Throughout our investigation of the three entirely separate incidents, we have established that no evidence whatsoever exists to suggest that HH Sheikh Mohammed had any knowledge of the purchase, transportation or use of any unregulated medicines. Equally, neither did he have any knowledge of the illegal activities of Mahmood Al Zarooni.@ Lord Stevens continued, "In our discussions with HH Sheikh Mohammed, he agreed to create a task force of experts to suggest ways to make it easier for all affected stakeholders in the equestrian industry to comply with the regulations. He will ask the task force to consider the creation of a global database containing country-by-country information on registered products that could be easily accessible to those seeking to transport veterinary medicine.@ Click to share this story. SOPHOMORES DO COMBAT IN THE DESERT A field of 11 will line up for tonight=s Meydan feature, the $250,000 G3 UAE 2000 Guineas, with the topthree from the UAE 2000 Guineas trial Jan. 16 set todo battle again. The consistent Emirates Flyer (GB)(Acclamation {GB})--off the board just once in sixoutings last year including three stakes-placed efforts--was first across the line that day, but in hot pursuitwas his Godolphin stablemate Safety Check (Ire)(Dubawi {Ire}). Also stakes-placed in England lastautumn, Safety Check endured a troubled trip in thetrial, doing well to be a fast-finishing runner-up afterchecking early and being forced to wait for runningroom in the lane. Emirates Flyer is conditioned by Saeedbin Suroor, Safety Check by Charlie Appleby, and bothwill race in the green silks of Sheikh Mohammed=s sonand the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan binMohammed Al Maktoum. My Catch (Ire) (Camacho{GB}), winner of the G3 Prix de Cabourg at Deauvillelast July, stuck on valiantly to be third, beaten a half-length, after setting the early pace off a 5 1/2-monthlayoff in the trial. The real wise guy horse exiting thetrial, however, could in fact be Sheikh Hamdan binRashid Al Maktoum=s Full Combat (SAf) (Go Deputy),who made up ground late to be fifth in his first startsince last July after enduring the lengthy quarantineperiod from South Africa. In his previous start in hisnative country, Full Combat finished seventh, beatenjust 4 1/2 lengths, in the G1 Durban Golden Horseshoein his fourth career start, and as most de Kock runnersin Dubai do, he should appreciate the Jan. 16 warmup.Wearing the Godolphin blue will be Long John (Aus)(Street Cry {Ire}) and Paximadia (Aus) (Commands{Aus}), imports from the Darley Australia stable whowill be making their first Dubai starts. Long John is thehigher profile of the two, having won the G1 CaulfieldGuineas in October, but Paximadia carries strongcredentials, too, having won the G3 Carbine Club S.and G2 Sandown Guineas in November. Full Combat,Long John and Paximadia give the opposition 10pounds as Southern Hemisphere-breds.

JOIN THE CLUB South Africa=s two-time Horse of the Year VarietyClub (SAf) (Var) makes his much-anticipated Dubaidebut in tonight G3 Firebreak S. at Meydan, and whilethe 5-year-old is facing his first outing on the all-weather off the rigorous South Africa to Dubaiquarantine, it could be that he stands too high abovethe opposition, at least over this distance. Trained byJoey Ramsden for Markus and Ingrid Jooste, VarietyClub has won four times at the highest level--all overthis distance--including last year=s G1 Queen=s Plate andG1 Gold Challenge when last seen in June. Variety Clubhas endured four layoffs of three months or more andwon first up all four times. Variety Club=s greatestthreat could come from Mars (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), whomakes his first start for his new South Africanconnections of Wilgerbosdrift Stud and Mike de Kock. While Mars has yet to win since breaking his maiden inJuly 2012, he has tangled with some of the bestEurope has to offer and performed admirably. Hefinished sixth, beaten 3 3/4 lengths, in last year=s G1 Epsom Derby; third, beaten 2 3/4 lengths in the G1 St. James=s Palace and fourth, beaten four lengths,in the G1 Coral Eclipse against elders. Mars was lastseen finishing second in the G3 Meld S. atLeopardstown last July, and may want more distancethan today=s contest offers. Fulbright (GB) (Exceed andExcel {Aus}) will have fitness on his side. Although hecould finish only sixth most recently in the G2 Al FahidiFort on the Meydan turf Jan. 23, he returns to hisfavored surface, over which he won a local handicapJan. 9.

NEWMARKET=S NATIONAL TREASURE For anyone who has seen the wonderful film>Something To Brighten The Morning=, it's impossible tostand in the stallion yard at the National Stud and notimagine, lump in throat, Mill Reef's lad walking away ashe leaves his charge to embark on his secondary career. More than four decades have passed since PaulMellon's outstanding homebred took up stud duties inNewmarket and subsequently became champion sire inBritain and Ireland in 1978and, posthumously, in 1987.During that time his formerhome, alongsideNewmarket's July Course atthe gateway to flat racing'sBritish headquarters, hasseen good times and bad.Today, happily, under theownership of the JockeyClub and the managementof Brian O'Rourke since2008, the National Stud isenjoying something of a renaissance. In its current incarnation it has been a bastion ofNewmarket since 1963, having initially been set up inIreland in 1916 after Colonel William Hall Walker (laterLord Wavertree) donated his land and stock to theBritish government to breed cavalry horses. It latertransferred to bases in Dorset and West Sussex from1943, having switched its attention to Thoroughbredbreeding. In such an establishment it's hard not tofocus on the historical aspect, and the graves of NeverSay Die, Royal Palace, Tudor Melody and Blakeney, along with yards named after some of the foundingfathers of the turf, such as Admiral Rous and LordsBentinck and Rosebery, do more than nod in thisdirection. But if there's one direction in which BrianO'Rourke's mind is focused it is very much towards thefuture.

Newmarket=s National Treasure cont. "It's becoming more and more evident that it'simportant to have something like the National Stud inthe heart of Newmarket," says the Irishman, who spent16 years working in the breeding business in Kentucky."When it was government-owned and losing money, people saw it as an expense to the tax-payer. Now,they see it as an asset. It should always have beenseen as an asset. We're running the stud as a business,it's washing its face and hopefully we will get back tothe heyday of Mill Reef. We'll just have to keep workinghard at it." Being on the doorstep of a number of high-profilestallion studs, as well as Tattersalls, has its benefits forthe 500-acre farm, which is home to up to 200boarding mares in the height of the breeding season. Asthe covering season is about to swing into action, thelevel of activity at the National Stud naturally cranks upseveral notches, too. "We'll probably have 30 mares coming in this weekso it's all hands on deck. We had four foals last nightand we'll be full-on until the end of May," says

O'Rourke as he arrives at thefoaling yard to examine thenew arrivals with assistantmanager Rob Stapleton andvet Huw Neal, a fertilityexpert from NewmarketEquine Hospital just nextdoor. "We've been very fortunatein that the stud's done verywell in the last few years and

the confidence has grown every single year. We've hadgood consignments at the December Sales and peopleare getting behind us, which is great to see. It alsomeans we're getting a better caliber of mare here.@ He continued: "There are some fantastic stallionsstanding here in Newmarket now--10 years ago itwasn't as strong. You've got Juddmonte, Darley,Cheveley Park, Lanwades, Shadwell, and 90% of themares we board here throughthe season are not going to ourstallions, but they're herebecause most of those studsdon't take boarders." While the establishedNewmarket elite such as Dansili(GB), Oasis Dream (GB), Dubawi(Ire) and Pivotal (GB) can holdtheir own against any sire in theworld, the unproven youngpretender Frankel (GB) remainsthe most talked-about stallion, and the National Stud played itspart in his continuing story whenhis first filly, a daughter of theSadler's Wells mare Song (Ire),was born at the farm on January19. Such is the clamor still fortales of Frankel that the bold bay filly appeared on thenational TV news and the front page of The Times.

There's no doubt that O'Rourke would love toincrease the stud's own stallion ranks, but in themeantime the dependable Bahamian Bounty (GB)remains a stalwart alongside his son Pastoral Pursuits(GB), while Dick Turpin (Ire) has an exciting year aheadwith his first crop of yearlings set to go under thehammer from this summer. "We'd love to get another stallion or two--a differenttype of stallion in the ,15,000 to ,20,000 range," hesays. "There's a void in this country for stallionsstanding between ,15,000 and ,30,000--there's anabundance in Ireland, but here there's a huge void andtherefore when you see stallions in that price rangethey are oversubscribed here. There's an opportunity atthat level if we can identify the right horse." Stallions and mares form the backbone of anybreeding establishment, but the National Stud is unique

in Britain in more ways thanone. Firstly, once a year, runners in the world's oldesthorse race, the NewmarketTown Plate, gallop through itsgrounds as part of the threeand three-quarter milechallenge. It's also the onlystud in the country that isopen to the public, witharound 25,000 annual visitors

between early March and the end of October. Finally, and arguably most importantly to the breeding world, the stud runs an annual diploma course for 24 students.

Newmarket=s National Treasure cont. "Horsemanship is the basis of it all. You could be thegreatest academic in the world but being hands-on iswhat's most important," says O'Rourke. "We had anew intake of students start last week and they arewith us until July. Throughout the breeding seasonthey'll get to do everything to give them a very broadfoundation." Along with assisting with foalings and the stallions, the students also handle an increasing number ofhorses in training, who enjoy short breaks at the stud, predominantly during the summer and autumn, asO'Rourke explains. "Part of the farm had been laid out for yearlings, about 21 individual paddocks and lunging rings, and weweren't really selling many yearlings so it was just sortof redundant. At the timethe place was losingmoney so we focused onspelling horses. We'refortunate that big trainershave started using us andnot just locals-- eventrainers like Kevin Ryan, who is based up inYorkshire." Recent National Stud graduates now employed inKentucky include Stone Farm's broodmare managerTroy West and Joe Reeves, the assistant manager atDixiana Farm, but the course's reach is wide. O'Rourke adds: "We've had students fromeverywhere--Kentucky, Australia, South Africa, NewZealand--and once they're finished it then opens a doorfor them anywhere in the breeding world. We'd haveabout 40 people looking each year to take on agraduate. Training students is very important to theJockey Club's involvement--we're feeding the industry--and that means they're part of the full circle, along withrunning the racecourses and training grounds." While O'Rourke is at the forefront of the day-to-dayrunning of the stud, he is backed by a pro-active boardwhich includes Gary Middlebrook, Lady Halifax, JulianRichmond-Watson, Tom Goff, Christopher Foster andBen Sangster as chairman. "It's a really good mix as there are lots of differentopinions, but we all pull together," says O'Rourke. "Wewere also very lucky in the previous chairman,Christopher Spence. It was his vision and he and JulianRichmond-Watson saw that the National Stud neededto be rescued. It was under his guidance that we gotback on an even keel." It may not have always been plain sailing forNewmarket's flagship farm, but the return to calmerwaters has been both hard-earned and well deserved.Click here to share this story.

Almost Famous Confirmed for Fountain of Youth... Chuck and Maribeth Sanford=s Almost Famous(Unbridled=s Song) has been confirmed for the Feb. 22GII Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park byconditioner Pat Byrne. Not seen for threemonths following that win, the dark bay was fourthafter attending the pace in his sophomore debut in theGII Holy Bull S. Jan. 25. "He ran big in the Holy Bull," Byrne said. "We werereally happy with his race because he showed a lot ofguts. He ran hard down the backside, didn't catch abreather, and I didn't have him fully cranked for therace." Almost Famous most recently breezed four panels in:49 flat at Palm Meadows Feb. 8. "It was a maintenance work, a nice half-mile, and I'mreally happy with him," Byrne said. "We came out ofthe race in good shape, he looks strong and we'rehoping to move forward." Though the colt has been on the pace in his previousstarts, Byrne believes he can show other dimensions. "He doesn't have to be on the lead, he just foundhimself in that position [in the Holy Bull]," Byrnecommented. "He's ready to go and we look forward tobringing him back and trying them again. Depending onthe pace scenario, he can sit off of it." Hall of Fame pilot Calvin Borel, who was aboard forAlmost Famous= debut and the Holy Bull, will get thecall for the Fountain of Youth. Borel also piloted theseconnections= Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) to victory inthe GI 2012 Florida Derby. "Calvin is coming back to ride him in the Fountain ofYouth," Byrne confirmed. After checking in atroubled fourth there, Pope chose to send her to theHurricane Bertie so she could finish her career a winner. She did just that despite breaking slow and trailingthe field early. The talented chestnut swept five-wideon the turn to inhale the field and cruise clear to win bydaylight under a hand ride from regular rider RajivMaragh. She just missed breaking the track record. AIt was one of her best races, the way she did it,@Bradley commented. AYou could see her winning by acouple of lengths and doing what she needed to do, butthe way she did it was remarkable. Boy, it was like shewas showing off.@ Bradley was in awe of the crowd=s reaction to thevery popular mare.

Talon=s of Tuscany always gave the impression thathe was a quick study, despite his later foaling date. AHe was a big and imposing horse as a yearling,@Castagnola related. AIt surprised us that he had as much
