History of Europe People and Events
Prince Henry the Navigator
Prince Henry the Navigator was from Europe (Portugal) and he
open a math and navigational school in Europe to help sailors
travel the world.
He also led explorations of Africa.
World War I
WWI started in 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz
Ferdinand and his wife Sophia. They were shot and killed during a
parade. Eventually due to alliances many European countries began
to fight. Machine guns, airplanes, tanks, and mustard gas were used
during the war. The USA got involved when the German sunk one of
our ships, the Lusitania. Germany lost the war and was blamed for
everything and had to repay all of the damages according to the
Treaty of Versailles.
The Great Depression
The Great Depression or (WORLD WIDE Depression) started with the
stock market crash on October 29, 1929 in the United States. People
lost their jobs, their bank accounts were empty, and people went to
soup kitchens to get food, while farmers lost all of their crops.
Many countries were poor, especially Germany!
The Nazi’s
The Nazi Party came to power in Germany in 1933 under their
leader Adolf Hitler. Hitler told the Germans he would fix their
economy and help them get through the Depression, but he really
blamed the Jews for getting them involved in WWI. They also started
WWII by invading Poland- The USA got involved with the bombing of
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
The Holocaust
The Holocaust was the killing of 6 million Jewish men and women
in Germany. Hitler blamed the Jews for starting WWI, so he put them
in concentration camps and gas chambers. Some of the most famous
concentration camps were Auschwitz and Dachau.
The Russian Revolution
During 1917, the Russians hated their leader, so they decided to
kick him out of office. They threw stones and rocks at government
buildings, and it was a riot! People were dying from starvation
during the Russian Revolution because the farms were being
destroyed because of WWI.
The Cold War
After WWII, TWO SUPERPOWERS came: USA and USSR (Russia). They
began to threaten each other with Nuclear weapons (atomic bomb) and
everyone became scared who was going to bomb whom. It was a war of
words because no fighting ever took place! (Remember “The Butter
Battle Book”)
End of the Cold War and German reunification
At the end of the Cold War, the United States and Russia (USSR)
decided to get along, so we did! However, Germany was split in half
between the United States and Russia, so we put Germany back
together by tearing down the Berlin Wall and there was peace in
Europe again!
The World’s 3 Monotheistic Religions (Believe in One God)
Judaism is the world’s oldest monotheistic religion. The
religion was started by Abraham and Sarah, long before Jesus was
born. The Jews lived in Israel.
Their Holy Book is called the Torah.
God gave the Jews the Ten Commandments.
Think of the Old Testament in the Bible, that is the story of
the Jews!
Christianity
One of the second oldest monotheistic religions is Christianity.
Christians follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus also lived
in Israel, and followed the Jewish faith. However, Christianity did
not begin until after Jesus died. He was crucified because the
Roman people did not like his teachings.

Islam
Islam began in Saudi Arabia with a man named Muhammad. Muhammad
preached about following one God (Allah) in Mecca, again many
people in Mecca did not like his teachings so he had to travel to
Medina. Muhammad believed in 5 things that Muslims should do: they
are called the Five Pillars of Islam: 1. Pray 5 times a day facing
Mecca, 2. Give to charity, 3. Say you believe in God, 4. Use one
month (Ramadan) to not eat during the day, and 5. Make a trip to
Mecca in your life (Hajj).

People and Events of Middle Eastern History
Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman Empire was a long existing empire which controlled
much of the Mediterranean Sea. The Ottoman empire took sides with
Germany during WWI, which according to the Treaty of Versailles;
the Ottoman Empire had to be broken up. As a result, European
countries began to make new countries which resulted in different
ethnic groups not getting along with each other in the country.
Holocaust
The Holocaust was the killing of 6 million Jewish men and women
in Germany. Hitler blamed the Jews for starting WWI, so he put them
in concentration camps and gas chambers. Some of the most famous
concentration camps were Auschwitz and Dachau.
People who supported the Holocaust were called: Anti-Semitic and
people who supported the Jews moving to Israel were called
Zionists.
Creation of Israel
The state of Israel was created in 1948 by the United Nations.
After the Holocaust, the world looked upon the Jews in sympathy,
and created a homeland for the Jews.
As a result the Palestinians were ALREADY living there, this
created a huge conflict combining the two ethnic groups.
Land and Religious Conflict
Palestinians= Muslim (Islamic)
Israelis= Jews
Once Israel was created in 1948, placing the two ethnic groups
of Palestinians and Israelis together created a conflict over LAND
and RELIGION.
Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm)
Iran vs. Iraq. Saddam Hussein was the leader of Iraq, in which
he accused all of the people in Kuwait of stealing the oil fields
in Iraq. He burned down all of the oil fields as a result, which
started a war between Iran and Iraq. The United States joined the
side of Iran, in which we gave weapons to help fight against Saddam
Hussein. We gave some of our weapons to Al-Qaida, their leader:
Osama Bin Laden!
Operation Iraqi Freedom
As a result of September 11, 2001 when the World Trade Center
towers were attacked, the United States declared war on all
TERRORISTS in Afghanistan and Iraq. We were looking for the leader
of terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda, and their leader Osama Bin
Laden. Eventually, we were successful in 2010 with the invasion of
Bin Laden’s mansion, killing him. However, the war on terrorism has
not ended, it is still continuing today!
