Unit 9 Matter 1. Matter is anything that takes up space. 2. Physical property is a characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure directly. ex. a group of all different types of round sports balls all have the same shape 3. Mass is the amount of matter an object has. 4. To measure the mass of a rock you would need to use a pan balance. 5. Water freezes at 32 and 0 ℉ ℃ and boils at 212 and 100 . ℉ ℃ 6. Solid is matter that takes up a definite shape. Ex. book 7. Liquid is matter that does not have a definite shape. It takes the shape of its container. Ex. water 8. Gas is matter that does not take up a definite amount of space and does not have a definite shape. Ex. air around you 9. Physical change is when the state of matter stays the same but may look different. Ex. a rock being broken into smaller pieces 10. A mixture is two or more substances combined without changing any of them. Ex. fruit salad 11. A solution is a mixture in which all of the substances are equally mixed. Ex. lemonade 12. Dissolve is to completely and evenly mix one substance in another. Ex. sugar in tea
