Unit 9 Matter 1. Matter is anything that takes up space. 2. Physical property is a characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure directly. ex. a group of all different types of round sports balls all have the same shape 3. Mass is the amount of matter an object has. 4. To measure the mass of a rock you would need to use a pan balance. 5. Water freezes at 32 and 0 and boils at 212 and 100 . 6. Solid is matter that takes up a definite shape. Ex. book 7. Liquid is matter that does not have a definite shape. It takes the shape of its container. Ex. water 8. Gas is matter that does not take up a definite amount of space and does not have a definite shape. Ex. air around you 9. Physical change is when the state of matter stays the same but may look different. Ex. a rock being broken into smaller pieces 10. A mixture is two or more substances combined without changing any of them. Ex. fruit salad 11. A solution is a mixture in which all of the substances are equally mixed. Ex. lemonade 12. Dissolve is to completely and evenly mix one substance in another. Ex. sugar in tea

1. Matter is anything that takes up space.

2. Physical property is a characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure directly. ex. a group of all different types of round sports balls all have the same shape

3. Mass is the amount of matter an object has.
