BETTER BUSINESS BY DESIGN Course Descriptions (15 May – 9 June 2017) PROFESSIONAL STUDIES Service Design: Designing profitable customer experience, 3 ECTS Teachers: Jaana Liukkonen, Miia Koski Learning outcomes: The student is able to plan profitable customer experience and understands the meaning of entities related to it. The student is able to comprehend the effect of different elements of the interior on the atmosphere, associations and behavior. The student can analytically observe of the service process. The student can create relevant customer descriptions for product/service design concepts and comprehend the process of developing and launching new products/services. The student can do profitability calculations for product/service concepts. The student understands the meaning of user-centered design, the challenges related to the launching and marketing of new products and also the significance of innovative thinking for business development. Contents: Design thinking and service design Planning customer experience Interiors and their elements, such as atmosphere, furniture, lightning, sounds colors, etc. Service and processes (customer service, responding to customer needs, buying process, costs and profitability) Customer group descriptions and techniques for collecting customer information The process of planning and launching new products/services Elements of product (design, material, colors, functionality, message, costs and profitability, price, product development and new concepts) Launching and marketing new product/service concepts

Service Design: Designing profitable customer experience, 3 ECTS

Learning outcomes:The student is able to plan profitable customer experience and understands the meaning of entities related to it. Student's workload:Approximately 81 hours from which 27 hours contact lessons and 54 hours independent work online and in group

Assessment Methods: Active participation 20% Case study, learning assignment 60% Presentation 20%

Assessment takes into account the working methods, problem-solving skills and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in order to develop the working and business practices. Group work, active participation in teaching

Assessment Criteria: Excellent (5): The student has carried out work at an excellent standard and participated actively and constructively. During the course the student has shown ability to comprehend the concepts of the course. Good (4-3): The student has carried out work very well and participated actively and constructively. During the course the student has shown ability to comprehend the concepts of the course. Satisfactory (2-1):  The student has participated actively in the course. Event and Experience Management, 2 ECTS

Teacher: Jenny Janhunen

Learning outcomes:The student knows the basic terminology of event management and can describe the different event types. The student can identify the special characteristics of event management industry. The student can describe the holistic perspective on event management. The student is able to plan, organize and evaluate events. The student can identify future development trends in event management and can adapt different managerial elements accordingly.

Contents: Terminology of event management Characteristics of event management industry (MICE, exhibitions, conferences, seminars and others) Developing and managing events in everyday business Future trends in event industry

Learning methods:Contact lessons, Independent study, Case study

Learning material: Mehndiratta, Vaibhav. (2009) Career in Event Management. Other literature, reports and research papers (announced at the beginning of the course)

Student's workload:Approximately 54 hours from which 18 hours contact lessons and 36 hours independent work online and in group

Assessment Methods: Active participation 20% Case study, learning assignment 60% Presentation 20%

Assessment Criteria: Excellent (5): The student has carried out work to an excellent standard and participated actively and constructively. During the course the student has shown ability to comprehend the concepts of the course and apply the concepts in practical business cases. Student has been able to develop creative solutions in the assignment of the course. Good (4-3): The student has carried out work very well and participated actively and constructively. During the course the student has shown ability to comprehend the concepts of the course and apply the concepts in practical business cases. Student has been able to develop solutions for the case company in the assignment of the course. Satisfactory (2-1):  The student has participated actively in the course. During the course the student has shown ability to comprehend the basic concepts of the course and apply the concepts in practical business cases. The student has been able to use the basic concepts of the course in the case company assignment.

Visualization Tools in Practice, 2 ECTS

Teacher: Juhani Haarala

Learning outcomes:The student is able to present his or her ideas visually for the customer. The student knows basic rules for creating presentations using suitable computer software. Specific software will be chosen at the beginning of the course from following; Adobe Photoshop, - InDesign & -Illustrator, Apple Keynote, Trimble Sketchup, Cinema 4D etc. The student is familiar with the Apple working environment.

Contents:

Apple Macintosh working environment Digital presentation methods, iPads, Apple TV Content creation

Learning methods:Lectures and guided practice, independent study

Learning material: Announced at the beginning of the course

Student's workload:Approximately 54 hours of which 18 hours contact lessons and 36 hours independent work online

Assessment Methods: Classroom participation 50 % Presentation 50

Learning outcomes:Students will know the ways of conducting business in the Nordic countries. Students will understand the unique challenges of creating a successful market entry plan into the region. Students will be aware of the Nordic countries economies, cultures and political systems.

Innovation Workshop: Designing Profitable Concepts, 3 ECTS

Learning outcomes:The student is able to collect user information and implement it for designing new products or service concepts for the customer. The student can evaluate concepts economical viabilities and can also present his or her ideas visually to the customer.

Learning methods:Group work, case, written report, presentation

Student's workload:Approximately 108 hours from which 30 hours contact lessons and 78 hours independent work online and group work

Assessment Methods: Active participation in group work 20% Novelty of concepts and presentation 60% Peer review 20%

Assessment Criteria: Excellent (5): The student has carried out work at an excellent standard and participated actively and constructively. During the course the student has shown ability to comprehend the concepts of the course and apply the concepts in practical business cases.
