North Temple Inn Visual Analysis
It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words and there is no place better
that has grasped this concept than the business world. Every day we pass by signs on bill boards
or see advertisements in the newspapers that grab our eye and get our attention. Why do these
advertisements grab our attention? When creating an advertisement there are some very
important elements that are to be considered some of which include, pictures, wording, color
of the text, or size of the font. All of these elements convey a message and entice you to buy a
product. At the north temple inn, they incorporate all of these different elements into their
advertising, specifically on their website in their brochures and even on the outward
appearance of the building itself. All three of these methods of advertising are vital to the
success of this small business.
In today’s world, information is no longer predominantly placed upon thinly sliced
papers. It is instead upon the tightly built machines we call laptops, tablets, and cell phones.
Companies have gone from physically published news, to electronically published. The only way
one may stay at the top of the market is to publicize themselves on the Internet. That is exactly
what The North Temple Inn has done. They have gone above and beyond the “ma-n-pa styled”
business, and created for themselves a natural sense of publicity. This is made evident by their
website.
When you first
enter the North Temple
Inns website you are
greeted by a few pictures

of the sites and attractions of Salt Lake City and then your eyes are drawn down to the main
features of the website. Some of the features included are: clearly defined options of rooms,
attractions near the vicinity of the Inn, service and amenities offered, locally owned deli, and
much more. With each tab that you click on they include pictures that help to support the main
topic of each tab. With that being said, the actual layout of the Inn is never visibly shown in any
pictures and there is a small number of pictures of the rooms, pool, and other social venues
offered, which leaves the consumer weary of what they may be getting into. One thing that
does stand strong in their defense is they have offers that beat many competitors, and they
give the accessibility of reserving rooms on their website. They have a very clean environment,
but it could definitely use some “home-improvements” Their location provides ease of access
to many of the local attractions. Not only will the shear ease of finding the place get you to stay,
but also the homey feel of the building will surely invite you in to rest. With their standard goal
being your comfort, they clearly ensure this through the ease of their website.
Besides using the web there are a couple major ways that people use the visual factor to
promote their business. The first would be to pick a prime location for your business that fits
the demographic of your clients. Second, just like a picture speaks a thousand words, so does
the curb appeal of your business. Depending on how your business looks will greatly affect the
type of clients that enter your business.
On the website rabidofficemonkey.com they give four things to keep in mind while you
are looking to improve the curb appeal of your business and they are, first “Display who you
are”, second “A Welcoming Store Front”, third “A New Paint Job” and forth “Keep everything

maintained”. I believe that these tips are four vary important things that will help a business
succeed.
The North Temple Inn has always striven to have a clean outward appearance. When
you look out the window of the LDS Business College and you look down on to this Inn, you
notice that it has a clean parking lot free of clutter and as your start to look upwards you find
that the plants are well maintained and groomed, then you take a look at the building, the
balconies have been swept and there is no trash lying about.
Although the hotel has been kept clean you can’t help but notice its dated appearance.
Originally built in 1961 by Howard Johnson Express Inns, this hotel has gone through decades of
customers going in and out. In the fifty-four years that this hotel has been opened it has
introduced some conveniences such as wireless internet and other technological upgrades that
have attracted some customers. However, I believe that since being bought out in early January
of this year, if the North Temple Inn will invest a little bit of money on improving its curb appeal
by applying a fresh coat of paint and adding new lighting fixtures, it will help to attract more
customers.
Although the outward appearance may be out dated, the North Temple Inn has sought
different routes for promoting its business. For one they have lowered their room rates to rival
those of their competitors, through charging sixty-nine dollars a night they have been able to
beat out a lot of their competitors by forty dollars or more. Apart from their rates, the hotel is
in a central location were its just a short walk to many of Salt Lake’s major tourist attraction and
because of this when you enter into their lobby you are surrounded by a barrage of brochures.

These colorful brochures give their clients many different ideas of places to go or sights to help
them have a more memorable stay.
All though there are still improvements that can be made, the North Temple Inn’s
cleaver use of the visual factor in their advertisement along with their unbeatable rates have
helped this small business to thrive and to succeed.
