As you will have noticed, there are some pretty dramatic changes going on with the Waterlines. We have changed the format and have tried to add more interesting “stuff” for club members as well as more photos.
This is our first attempt at this format and we hope you enjoy it. We plan to add more pages as development time allows. Pages covering Club and Board activities, standing committees, special events, racing and cruising events, etc., will be standard fare. We are planning to add a “For Sale” column, want ads, and maybe even
“Personals”. If there are other pages you would like to see then let us know.
The interesting “stuff” mentioned above will only be interesting if and when you, as a member of the club, become involved in offering your anecdotes, photos, events, and takes on the Club and its on- going activities. So, what are you waiting for? Check the due date at the left and let us know what you think.
“Commodoreship” is going, expecting I think, to see me role my eyes and moan about things. I have to say that I’m enjoying seeing
the club from a slightly different perspective and I’m getting to meet more members than perhaps I would have normally. Mostly because normal for me would be off in a quiet corner and not front
and center, and certainly not having my presence announced with a large bell. I am more impressed than ever with club members
dedicated to our sport and to this organization. I have witnessed people giving of themselves to provide safety and rescue for
racers, or beautiful gardens at our entrance, or even simple things like fixing broken hand rails. The more I notice, the more impressed with the members who give their time and talents to this club.
Much happens at GTYC that isn’t often recognized by anyone, but ultimately is appreciated by all. Thanks!
One thing that will be happening will be to our food service. The
board recently approved a proposal from the Food & Beverage Committee to contract with Fogarelli’s to provide food service at the club. I believe this contract will provide flexibility for the club events while providing more consistent quality to the members on Wednesday and Friday nights. We plan on adding servers to help get
you the food you ordered (admittedly a difficult task as we tend to order then move around). GTYC has grown steadily from the original
decision to open the club on Friday nights to where we are now. Many clubs our size have had great difficulty in making the transition from all volunteer kitchens to the partial (2 nights per week) service. I think
GTYC has done remarkably well as we’ve travelled this path.
We owe all our staff (past and present) a “Job Well Done”.
Lastly, as you read this message it will be in the
newly formatted
waterlines, let us know how you like it!
See you at our club!

It’s Finally Beach Time at the GTYC!
The beach is now open
Two club members, Bill Buchbinder and
Glen Rauth, are responsible for helping to improve our beach. Bill is responsible for
providing and maintaining the awning,
and Glen has been regularly moving the swim platform and removing residue from
the lake bottom near the beach and the
dock areas.
Currently the deepest part of the swimming area is only about 4 feet around
the docks and swim platform so diving can
be dangerous. And it is wise to always wear foot protection when wading. We
recently discovered broken glass near the
TACS boat lift!
So, enjoy and please help us keep it clean. A trash receptacle is available next to the awning.
And, as always, swim with a buddy or make sure there is parental supervision for those little waders.
Did you know our club is in one of the most sought after places to go
boating?!! (Of course you did!)
According to the June / July 2013 issue of BoatUS, Traverse City is listed as number 1 of
the “10 great boating towns in the US” for you to retire, play, and thrive.

World (Puerto Rico) and up the US East Coast finishing back in NYC. Other
stories were equally compelling and offered good points for all sailors.
Turning from sailing to his time as U-M A.D., Bill described his role in several
familiar scenarios. U-M fans have Martin to thank for many of his efforts as Interim A.D., none more impactful than removal
of the Michigan Stadium "halo". University President, Lee Bollinger, was
insistent upon Martin staying for 3 years as A.D. and Martin acquiesced, with 2
non-negotiable points: he not be paid and the "halo" is removed. Clearly, Bollinger
made the right decision! Policies Martin implemented at the Athletic Department have been adopted University-wide and
are in practice today.
From our group of sailors and Michigan
faithful, thank you, Bill!
On April 30, GTYC partnered with the U
of M Club of Grand Traverse for our third
annual speaking engagement. Those in attendance (nearly 100 GTYC & U-M Club
members) were treated to insider bits from his days as U-M Athletic Director plus tales
of Bill's racing adventures with added commentary from Bill's long-time ship-mates, Dave Irish and Mike Fisher. (Yes, 2
former presidents of US Sailing were at
GTYC!) One of the best loved sailing adventures was
a recounting of the 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America, the
Grand Regatta Columbus. The race started downwind against a variety of tall ships and
Stripes, Martin's Santa Cruz 70 (Just how DO you start a race on a fully-rigged ship? Hint - the anchor plays a role.) The race
crossed the Atlantic twice; starting in New York, making landfall in Cadiz, Spain turning

Discussion of problems with the dock were discussed. Action was
taken to award a pre-engineering study of the dock in an amount not to exceed $2,500 to Edgewater
Engineering.
Consideration of the reauthorization of the loan for the Club building was
discussed and approved by unanimous consent.
The award of a provisional contract to Darric Newman of Fogerarelli’s
Deli was discussed and approved. The contract covers all food
preparation and service to the club for the remainder of the year.
Contract terms and conditions can discussed with any Board member for those interested.
Advertising in the Waterlines was
approved by the Board with the current fee structure carried forward.
Advertising requests are to be forwarded to the editor of the Waterlines.
On May 21, 2013 the GTYC Board met in its regularly scheduled meeting. The
following items were discussed and/or acted upon.
The Board discussed the issue of
Senior Membership dues and the need to notify those who may
qualify for the Senior Membership dues. It was decided that notices
would be published in the December, January, and February Waterlines of each year regarding
applying for Senior Membership,
qualifications, and payments
A number of club rental applications were discussed. Of
those discussed two were approved:
Lovell Marian University of Michigan Student
Party
8/12/2013
Kevin Clark Christmas Party
12/14/2013
Three other applications were
postponed pending confirmation of availability.

MAY CRUISERS MEETING
SETS PLANS FOR SUMMER
In the usual manner the summer begins and the Cruiser
meeting ended with a lively discussion of tricks, tips, and
plans for the upcoming boating season. A great meal, potluck
style headlined by two chili dishes (appropriate for the snow!)
provided by Bev Stepnitz and Diane Hubert and appetizers,
highlighted by smoked white fish provided by Jarvis Post
were a big hit.
During the meeting a presentation by Bill Strait and Jessica
Rickert provided much needed information about the water
depths in many of the marinas in our local cruising grounds.
This meeting has been posted on the GTYC web site for all
club boaters to review.

Welcome…
GTYC Cruising Club meets the 2nd Thursday
of each month
fall through spring.
All sailing and powerboat cruisers are welcome.
A potluck dinner is followed
by cruising stories, seminars, and planning for cruising
August 29th will see the departure of 10 members of the GTYC community who are
setting off for cruising in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. The couples including
Jim and Gerri Sorbie, Steve and Deb Wyckoff, Mike and Carol Morris, Richard Sutton and
Diane Hubert, and Fred and Lisa Wilmeth, will spend two weeks in the San Juan’s and Canadian Gulf Islands.
Emergency Dental Kits
Offered
Emergency dental kits are being offered for sale
by the Cruising Club. These important kits stem from a discussion of emergency dental
care presented by Jessica Rickert at last fall’s Cruising Club meeting. The kits contain items for treating dental emergencies and are offered
at a nominal price to club member. They are a great addition to the medical kits we all have
on board. For ordering your kit, please contact Lisa Wilmeth.
Rendezvous’ to Share!
Want to share in impromptu flotillas and rendezvous’ this summer? Then get your name
on the list! Cruisers is preparing a group email list to notify cruisers who may be in the area that
a rendezvous is being planned or happening. Those organizing the get-together will email the cruisers group and whomever is interested can
RSVP and boat on up. What could be more fun! Just let Fred or Lisa Wilmeth know and they’ll
make sure you’re on the list.
Don’t forget to plan for the first Cruisers
Group meeting this fall. The meeting will be
September 19, 2013.

Grand Traverse Yacht Club – Waterlines – June 2013 Issue
Saturday June 1 dawned dark and rainy and the phone rang early with crew members asking “Are
we REALYY racing today?”. As this race for us is a practice/shakedown for the Mac, the answer
was “Yuuup, sure are”. As it turned out the rain passed and the skies cleared and we had a great run
under the chute all the way to Northport. Between Northport and Fisherman Island things got kind
of interesting. The first clue was the sight of Big Red sailing south under their spinnaker while inshore
Ahyadoin made their way North in an offshore breeze. We stupidly sailed right into that same junk
and saw no air, then several 180 degree wind shifts with accompanying jibes, douses and resets. We
ended up using a partially furled 150 genoa to help point the way. The degree of wind shear
(differences between mast head wind and surface wind) was amazing, often 45 degrees or more.
Did I mention clear skies? That was true enough, although forward visibility dropped to about 100 ft
or so. As the wind picked up a little so did the fog. Now we had the GPS out looking for the green
can at Fisherman Island and then the finish at the R2 buoy at Charlevoix. Big Red heard our foghorn
and asked us where we were; turns out we were inside them by a hundred yards or so next to the can.
Relentless was just behind us (we found out later) and we assumed Ahyadoin was already sitting at
the dock in Charlevoix (not quite true, but close). Thanks to the Bermuda start, all the competing
boats finished within an hour of each other with three of us clustered around the island at about the
same time. Fun racing, especially considering the huge PHRF spread between the boats racing. We
groped out way through the fog to the finish and just as we spotted the R2 Buoy, someone said look
there’s Relentless. True to her name, Relentless was just behind us (with better speed) reminiscent of
the open scene for “Master and Commander” as she appeared out of the fog to catch us. Lucky for
Highlander they ran out of race course before overtaking us. (Continued on last page.)
Big Red was next and we all caught the next bridge (after finding the bridge!) and then dinner at the Villager in Charlevoix. All in all it was a fun day.
Sunday dawned cold and rainy. As I had breakfast watching the rain and fog coming sideways through the town, I was thinking “seriously, I have to go back today?”. Turns out the conditions
weren’t as bad as I thought, but still there’s not much to report on Sunday’s race except it was fast wet
and cold. I understand Relentless saw boat speeds of 18 knots on the way home. The 18,000 lb
behemoth that is Highlander saw steady 8’s all the way down the bay.
