An apple a day keeps the doctor away. The young lady on our cover reminds us it’s good to eat an apple a day. As the old saying goes, it can help keep the doctor away.

But there’s just a bit more involved in maintaining and sustaining health through a lifetime than snacking on a few slices of apple. By 2051, it is estimated that one in four Canadians will be 65 years of age or older, creating new strains on family caregivers, our healthcare system and society in general. In addition, there are any number of contributing factors (beyond the occasional apple) that impact our overall health and wellbeing from birth through to end of life. Research is showing frequency of exercise, a nutritious diet, and avoidance of risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol, and even a better understanding of our own

individual genetic makeup, have the ability to positively affect long term health outcomes.

In this issue of WATCH Magazine we explore the health issues affecting our society. We sit down with Dr. Susan Elliott, University of Waterloo’s Dean of Applied Health Sciences; learn more about the plans for the former

TechTown from Dr. Bill McIlroy, Chair of the Department of Kinesiology; and

take look at two exciting healthcare oriented companies here within

the David Johnston Research + Technology Park – AGFA Healthcare, and technology startup Intellijoint Surgical.

At the end of the day, it is always about providing better and more expedient care to the patient.“ ”The digital age is facilitating a major transition in healthcare record management where innovation and technology are creating new opportunities to share information and improve patient care. The electronic medical record (EMR), a digital based patient medical record, provides physicians with better access and sharing of clinical information in a secure, efficient manner.

Spearheading the clinical imaging charge, from its global centre of excellence in the David Johnston Research + Technology Park is AGFA HealthCare, a leading provider of integrated IT solutions and state of the art diagnostic imaging solutions for hospitals and healthcare centers.

AGFA HealthCare’s Imaging Clinical Information System (ICIS®), enables caregivers to create, collaborate, exchange, and manage a comprehensive medical imaging record through the continuum of care, by linking (and allowing caregivers to view) patient information records across clinical, technical and regional boundaries. AGFA HealthCare is now expanding ICIS® beyond its traditional foothold in radiology and cardiology to provide rich services in all imaging departments in the healthcare network. This includes digital images from surgery, ophthalmology and dermatology departments which have traditionally remained as

departmental silos preventing clinicians from viewing all patient-related medical images as part of an electronic medical record.

“AGFA HealthCare is developing ICIS® to meet this challenge head-on and to advance what we see as a rapidly advancing ‘visual healthcare evolution.’ By embracing cross-department and enterprise access to medical images, hospitals and health systems have the opportunity to enhance overall patient care, improve procedure and cost efficiencies, and advance meaningful use of the EMR,” said Michael Green, President of AGFA HealthCare Americas Region, in a January press release announcing the latest ICIS® advancements.

“At the end of the day, it is always about providing better and more expedient care to the patient,” explains Steve Van Dokkumburg, software architect at AGFA HealthCare and one of the designers of the ICIS® system. “Today’s aging population and complex care demands are driving a need for improved information sharing across departments, who often are required to collaborate at the point of care. AGFA HealthCare’s vision for cross departmental and enterprise access to medical images is designed to enhance patient care, improve procedure and cost efficiencies and advance meaningful use of the EMR.”

New Kinesiology Research and Innovation Centre in R+T Park Opens Up New Opportunities for Research Collaboration and Advancements in Treatment

Tucked into the middle of the David Johnston Research + Technology Park, a transformation is underway. The building formerly known as “TechTown” is now mid-renovation, on its way to becoming an exciting new multi-disciplinary research and innovation centre for UW’s Department of Kinesiology. Faculty and students can perform studies, share that learning working with university and healthcare partners, and validate new therapies and preventative health strategies with individuals from the community.

The centre will have an open door policy to all who wish to visit, and will focus on health and wellness at every age. “Certainly much of our research is focused on our aging population. We have researchers dedicated to such fields as vascular health, bone health, and brain health. But too often we catch people on the down side of that curve,” says Bill McIlroy, Department Chair of Kinesiology. “Part of the focus of this centre will be to understand the impact of exercise and nutrition on health at every age. We want to catch those 35 year olds as they come in to exercise and involve them in research studies to examine the long-term impact of exercise and nutrition on their health. We’ll obviously be looking at treatments and therapies, but we also want to examine an individual’s biological makeup, to understand why strategies work for some, and not for others. This multi-dimensional view will allow us to put in place highly personalized prevention, treatment and exercise programs to improve long-term health outcomes.”

Thanks to the gift of TechTown, McIlroy’s vision for broad scale research collaboration is now on the brink of reality.

“Our research agenda within the Kinesiology Department is both broad and diverse. We have people with a range of expertise including bone health vascular health, cellular and molecular health, exercise, nutrition and mobility. But we have always been bound together by the applied nature of what we do. Regardless of the new tools, therapies, preventative strategies we create, our department has a unified energy to make a difference. But the missing piece has always been our ability to bring that research under one roof,” explains McIlroy.

“When you have researchers working hand in hand with primary care physicians, clinical care workers, with technology partners and ultimately with the individuals from the community who will benefit from improvements in care, things simply accelerate that much more quickly.”

“This new research and innovation centre will serve as a unifying location – a physical space where our collective energy can be housed, where collaboration can happen and where ideas can flow.“

Innovative Medical Device Startup Intellijoint Surgical Takes the Fast Track to Success

In the United States alone, more than 850,000 people will undergo hip and knee replacement surgery in any given year, with the average surgeon performing around 30 or less of these surgeries annually. The surgery is not without its risks. In hip replacement surgery, for example, nearly two-thirds of patients will experience a lengthening of their operated leg. And in seven percent of cases, complications related to hip surgery are far more severe – requiring the surgery be repeated within 90 days.

It was 2007 when Armen Bakirtzian entered the OR to watch his father, an orthopedic surgeon, perform a hip replacement surgery for the first time.

As Bakirtzian watched on, his dad explained the problem orthopedic surgeons face when performing joint replacement and the consequences of poor alignment. He asked him if he could design something to help. That simple question set Bakirtzian and his co-founders, Andre Hladio and Richard Fanson, on an entrepreneurial path that now has them at the helm of Intellijoint, a simple, cost-effective technology for more effective and accurate joint replacement, one of the most exciting medical device startups to emerge on the Canadian landscape.

On a fast track to success, Intellijoint has made incredible strides in commercializing its technology. This summer, the company received its ISO 13485 certification, and in November was awarded its Health Canada Medical Device License in addition to closing $6 million in investment.

“For a medical device company to accomplish all of these milestones in just a three year period is really significant,” says Bakirtzian. “It’s also a testament to the strength of our team, and to our determination to surround ourselves with excellence.”

At the time of writing, the Intellijoint HIP™ device has been used in 30 surgeries at Mount Sinai and Grand River Hospitals, and use of the device is expanding, with two more hospitals coming on line in the next few weeks.

Word about the Intellijoint HIP™ device is circulating among patients as well. The founders have received several letters from individuals inquiring if Intellijoint HIP™ can be used in their upcoming surgery.

“Patients today are a lot more informed, and are actively taking ownership of their health care. They are out there looking for technologies that have the potential to improve their outcomes. It’s really quite gratifying to know that they are interested in our device and wanting to be part of our story,” states Bakirtzian.

Helping People Live Long, Strong, Healthy Lives University of Waterloo Dean of Applied Health Sciences Susan Elliott Speaks to the Research and Collaborative Partnership that is Improving Life at Every Stage.

Nearly 20 years ago, the Canadian Medical Association identified the challenge of caring for an aging population as the most pressing problem facing the Canadian healthcare system. It is within this context that University of Waterloo’s Applied Health Sciences faculty finds its mission.

“There is no greater issue than the aging population,” says Dr. Susan Elliott, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences (AHS). “Our faculty and students are committed to addressing this challenge as a team and collaboratively through partnership. It’s not a road we can travel alone.”

The faculty’s collaborative research is aimed at promoting health, preventing illness and optimizing life and well being across the entire life course. “The decisions we make in our younger years govern how we will be in old age,” says Elliott. “We need to put the focus on helping people live long, strong, healthy lives at every stage of life.”

At one end of the spectrum, the faculty puts the focus on youth health, with research programs such as the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact, a collaborative enterprise focused on tobacco control, youth health, and capacity development.

At the other end of the aging spectrum, the faculty is, in Elliott’s own words, a “poster child” for aging research, with research programs and collaborative partnerships that examine all aspects of our elder years, from retirement, to aging in place, to long-term care, to Alzheimer’s and other causes of dementia.

In November 2013, ground broke on a new centre of excellence for innovation in aging on Waterloo’s north campus, the product of a partnership between the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA), Schlegal Villages, Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning and the University of Waterloo. The research facility will be built directly adjacent to a new Schlegel Village 192 bed long-term care facility, allowing faculty, staff and students to develop and implement research and training programs that will contribute to best practices across Canada.

Dean Elliott glows with pride when speaking of the AHS strategic plan, which brings together elements of world-class research, knowledge sharing, and collaboration with academic and industry partners.

“Our inspiration for the plan was drawn from an African proverb that says, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ As soon as I heard it I knew it would serve as the inspiration for all we’re trying to achieve. Meeting the challenge of our aging population is no easy or short-term task. But I’m confident AHS will take a leadership role in helping people live long, strong and healthy lives.”
