PITTSBURGH (AP) — Tyler O’Neill hit a two-run double to end a no-hit bid started by Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller, and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the Pirates 5-4 Saturday night.
Keller threw 84 pitches over six no-hit innings and was pulled from the game leading 4-0, but the Cardinals scored five runs off relief pitchers Geoff Hartlieb and Sam Howard in the seventh. O’Neill broke up the no-hit bid and keyed the inning with his bases-loaded double against Howard (2-3).
St. Louis improved to 25-24 and is a game ahead of Cincinnati and Milwaukee for second place in the NL Central. The top two teams in each division advancing to the expanded postsea-son.
“Tonight was a micro-cosm of this group,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “Down 4-0, getting no-hit after six innings, it’s not the most ideal conditions but this group thrives when there aren’t ideal conditions. Our guys stayed mentally ready and scratched and clawed and did what it takes to get the job done.”
The 24-year-old Keller spun a gem in his second start since missing six weeks with a strained left oblique, but was pulled well short of finishing it off. He walked two and
hit O’Neill with a pitch before retiring his final 14 batters, finishing with six strikeouts.
Keller knew his chanc-es of going nine innings were slim.
“I was thinking just go out there and get quick outs and go as deep as I can,” he said. “I knew I had a no-hitter from the first batter. I had a few walks, but other than that, I was pretty pleased.”
Hartlieb relieved in the seventh and promptly loaded the bases by walking Brad Miller and
Paul DeJong and drilling Yadier Molina. Howard then came in and allowed O’Neill’s line drive into the left field corner.
“I felt I had to do the job there and put the ball in play hard somewhere,” O’Neill said. “It’s time for us to make some noise. The guys are scrapping together and it’s the men-tality we’re taking every day.”
Keller entered with a 1-1 record and 5.06 ERA in three games. He was activated from the injured list Monday after being sidelined since
Aug. 2.After O’Neill got the
Cardinals within 4-2, Dylan Carlson hit a sacri-fice fly, and Kolten Wong and Tommy Edman delivered back-to-back RBI singles.
The rally took Kwang Hyun Kim off the hook for the loss after he allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Kim, in his rookie season with the Cardinals after 12 years in the Korea Baseball Organization, had made four consecutive starts in which he pitched at least five innings without
allowing an earned run.“Overall today wasn’t
good for me,” Kim said. “Fortunately, the team won and that’s what really matters.”
Jake Woodford (1-0) retired the last two bat-ters in the sixth and was credited with his first major league win. Gen-esis Cabrera notched his first save of the season by getting the last five outs.
The Pirates took a 2-0 lead on solo home runs by rookie Ke’Bryan Hayes in the first and Jose Osuna in the third.
No-hit through six, Cardinals rally in seventh to beat Bucs
SATURDAY’S LATE GAME
Associated PressThe Cardinals’ Harrison Bader (left) celebrates with Paul Goldschmidt after scoring on a single in the seventh inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night in Pittsburgh.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Meyers Leonard was bent forward at the waist, standing a few feet away from Miami coach Erik Spoelstra on the Heat sideline, screaming with every bit of the volume that his deep and booming voice can generate.
This is his role right now for the Heat.
His only role.Leonard is in a
tough spot these days; a full-time starter during the regular season, he is now out of the rotation as the Heat have made their run to the Eastern Conference finals. It is a bitter pill for him to swallow — yet to his credit, he hasn’t acted the least bit bit-ter about his current reality.
“My team knows this, and our coach-ing staff knows this,” Leonard told The Asso-ciated Press. “I would do anything to be out there. And I’d be lying if I said that I’m not competitive as hell. I wish I was impacting the game on the floor. I’m not, but as a person and as a player, I want what’s best for every-body.”
So for now, the 7-foot, 260-pound, chis-eled center is the tall-est, strongest and best-paid assistant coach in these playoffs. He calls out what he’s seeing on every possession, pulls aside teammates for quick one-on-one chats when necessary, and on off days he’s getting his on-court work in just in case he’s needed to play.

WE APPRECIATE FARMERS FOR ALL THEY DO!
The nursery rhyme does not state, “Old MacDonald had a farm and on this farm there was a bunch
of dangerous things.” But maybe it should? Farmers perform an essential service, providing food and other products that consumers commonly take for granted. The inner workings of a farm are something to treat with respect. Most of the families who live and work on a farm understand the potential hazards of such an environment. However, individuals visiting a farm may be unaware of these dangers. Understanding farm safety helps keep everyone safe.According to the organization Kids Health, the age groups at greatest risk for injury on farms are children ages 3 to 4 and teenagers ages 13 to 14. Most injuries can be prevented, though, with a little education and precautionary measures.
MachineryThere are many different forms of machinery on a farm to help keep it working efficiently. These items can pose serious safety risks. Although tractors are the type of farm equipment that causes the most injuries, some adults still think it is safe to allow children to ride along. Injuries that may result from farm machinery include pinching of clothing or parts of the body, where a person may become trapped in the gears or components of equipment; cuts from equipment that shears crops; bruising or cuts from projectiles thrown by mowers or other field equip-ment; and crushing or trapping injuries from machinery that falls or tips over.AnimalsPart of the excitement of visiting a farm is seeing and petting the animals. Although many animals may be docile and domesticated, they can still be unpredictable. Animals that are startled
by yelling or loud noises also may become restless and dangerous. Children should understand that animals may unintentionally cause injuries. It may be in a horse’s defense mechanism to kick when it is scared. To avoid such injuries, never approach animals from behind. Also, when baby animals are present, a female may be protective of her brood and go on the defensive.Another inadvertent injury that may occur is from bacteria or viruses from the animals. Animal feces may contain bacteria, and there may be other microorganisms on the animals themselves. It is a smart idea to always wash your hands after handling a farm animal to prevent the spread of disease. Here are some other precautions that can be taken when visiting a farm.• Don’t allow children to wander around unsupervised.• Rides on farm equipment should be discouraged.
• Before starting machinery, operators should locate children and other guests and clear them from the work area.• Don’t allow children near machinery.• Children under the age of 16 should not be allowed to operate any farm vehicles.• Watch for hand tools or other equipment, and keep children away from them.• Do not touch animals unless a farm worker allows it. Then follow his or her instructions.• Don’t provoke farm animals or attempt to startle them.• Supervise children around ponds, feeding troughs or manure lagoons. It only takes a few inches of water to pose a drowning risk.Farms are interesting places to visit, especially for children. Safety should always be a priority when visiting a farm.
