WHAT’S INSIDE
UH MANOA POLICY ON GENDER EQUITY IN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS
Gender equity in athletics extends the doctrine of fairness to all areas of athletic activity at the University level. It is acti-vated by a sense of moral obligation that exceeds any specific duty to comply with legal requirements, although it also recognizes the necessity of observing the tenets of Title IX, Patsy Mink Act. Its desired effect is to offer women and men equal opportunities to participate in sports for which there is demonstrated interest among athletes in Hawai‘i and to provide equitable levels of support for coaching, travel, scholarships, operating expenses and facilities used. Beyond these specific goals, gender equity also fosters an atti-tude and establishes an environment in which men’s and women’s sports are encouraged in comparable ways. WHAT’S AN ‘OKINA?Q: Ever wondered what that punctuation mark in the word Hawai‘i is?A: In the Hawaiian language, it’s called an ‘okina, which translated literally in English means separator. Phonetically it is referred to as a glottal stop, similar to the sound that would be made in the English oh-oh. The ‘okina is actually a letter in the Hawaiian language and typed out looks like a backwards apostrophe. The practice of the UH Sports Media Relations Office is to use the ‘okina in all Hawaiian words in which they occur.

Home of the Rainbow WahineSince 2000, the University of Hawai‘i women’s soccer team has played on the familiar turf of the Waipi‘o Peninsula Soccer Stadium (WPSS), one of the top college soccer venues in the na-tion. Located in West O‘ahu, the stadium boasts a seating capacity of 4,500 and is a far cry from the early days of the soccer program, which required shuttling between Kapiolani Park and Ala Wai Field, both public fields. Hawai‘i has proven to be a tough team to beat at the stadium where it enjoys one of the best home-field advantages in NCAA soccer. Backed by an enthusiastic home crowd, Hawai‘i has consistently been a league-leader—both in the Western Athletic Conference and Big West Conference—in season attendance. Nationally speaking, Hawai‘i has ranked in the top 40 in average attendance in 14 of 15 seasons at WPSS, includ-ing three seasons in the top 10. The Rainbow Wahine have drawn crowds in excess of 2,000 fans nearly a half-dozen times, including a school-record 4,366 fans during the 2014 season.
The ComplexThe Waipi‘o Soccer Complex is the first and only soccer facility of its kind in the state of Hawai‘i with 21 regulation fields, including the 4,500-seat Waipi‘o Peninsula Soccer Stadium with lights for evening events as well as a brand new state-of-the art scoreboard. Located in West O‘ahu, just 20 minutes from downtown Honolulu, the complex covers 288 acres and is designed to serve nearly 30,000 soccer players on O‘ahu and the numerous others who travel to the island for both national and international tournaments. Aside from accommodat-ing thousands of spectators, WPSS also boasts two main locker rooms, two training rooms, concession booths and administrative offices.
The Mecca of Hawai‘i SoccerSince opening in 2000, the complex has played host to numerous events, from the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state soccer championships to international soccer matches featuring teams from as far as Korea and Germany. In 2004, the stadium served as the site of the Western Athletic Conference Championship, marking the first time UH has hosted the event. Thousands of players and fans have also made the facility their home for the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals with champions being crowned in 16 different age groups. AYSO also hosted its nationals at the site in 2008.
Practice FacilityAside from the stadium, UH has the luxury of practicing on a top-notch soccer field on its Manoa campus. George Toma, the Na-tional Football League field guru who was hired to re-surface the Rainbow Warrior football practice field, also renovated the Rainbow Wahine soccer practice field on UH’s lower campus.

Michele “Bud” Nagamine was hired in December 2010 as head women’s soccer coach at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Just the second coach in the 20-year history of the program, Nagamine has been the driving force in UH’s resur-gence with her energy, passion and knowledge of the game. Nagamine has exceeded preseason expecta-tions in each of her three seasons at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine, not surprising considering her track record of building winners. Wins did not come easy in her first season. UH faced a brutally tough preseason schedule—four of its first five opponents eventually advanced to the NCAA Tournament. However, that difficult schedule more than prepared the team for its final season in the Western Athletic Conference as a team that was predicted to finish seventh in the preseason poll was remarkably in championship contention until the final weekend of the regular season. UH ultimately finished third in the final standings and qualified for the WAC tournament for the first time in three years. The resurgence continued in 2012. UH cap-tured a pair of preseason tournaments and tied a school record by going undefeated in seven straight matches. Nagamine also successfully guided the team during its transition in the ultra-competitive Big West Conference. After being picked last in the preseason poll, the Rainbow Wahine won three matches and claimed sixth in the 10-team league. By season’s end, the team posted its highest win total (8) since 2008. The 2013 season brought even more suc-cess: an end to four straight losing seasons; the team’s first winning road record in 10 years; back-to-back wins over Pac-12 squads; another step up the conference standings; and six all-conference and one all-region nod for her players. Prior to UH, Nagamine, 45, had already made her mark on the club, high school and collegiate levels with a reputation as a program builder. She has been named a conference coach of the year, won numerous state titles in high school and guided one of the elite club programs in the West region. Nagamine spent three years as the head women’s soccer coach at Hawai‘i Pacific University, turning a losing program into a conference con-tender. She inherited a team that won just three games in 2007 and by her second year lifted the team to a 10-8-1 record and a third-place finish in the PacWest Conference. For her efforts, she was named the 2009 PacWest Coach of the Year. In her third season, the Sea Warriors finished with their second straight winning record and were the only team in the nation during the regular season to defeat BYU-Hawai‘i, which was ranked No. 1 in the West region. While at the helm of the Lady Sea Warriors soccer program, she recruited a conference goal-keeper of the year, a conference newcomer of the year and six all-conference players. She also over-saw academic improvement as the team increased
its GPA to above 3.0. Prior to joining HPU, Nagamine established herself as one of the most successful coaches in all of Hawai‘i high school athletics. As head coach of the Kamehameha Schools’ girl’s soccer team since 1991, she won five Hawai‘i state champion-ships and six Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles. Nagamine was named ILH Coach of the Year a league-record seven times and was a five-time selection as state Coach of the Year. Nagamine also received national recogni-tion for her work at Kamehameha. She has been named state Coach of the Year five times and Far West Region Coach of the Year two times by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the governing body of United States soccer coach-es. In 2007, she was named the NSCAA National High School Coach of the Year after guiding the Warriors to an undefeated (11-0-2) season and a second consecutive Hawai‘i state championship. Nagamine has also displayed a golden touch on the club level. As the technical director for Le‘ahi Soccer Club since 2002, she has overseen the direction and operation of Hawai‘i’s largest and most competitive girl’s soccer club. During that span, she helped grow the club from four teams to 26 teams. Nagamine also boasts extensive business experience. She was the owner of her own market-ing group as well as a soccer retail store. From 2001-11, she was the director of sports marketing and sales for Outrigger Hotels and Resorts, where she oversaw the operations of all sports bookings within all Outrigger properties. The Honolulu native is a 1990 graduate of Santa Clara where she captained the 1990 Bronco team that reached the NCAA semifinals.

ASSISTANT COACHES
Mike Herman was hired in the spring of 2011 as an assistant coach for the UH women’s soccer team. Herman’s duties include recruiting, scheduling, video coordination, team tactics and helping run the pro-gram’s various youth camps. Herman has helped UH exceed expectations both in the Western Athletic Conference and in the Big West. In 2011, the Rainbow Wahine went undefeated in their last five home matches while outscoring its opponents, 17-4. That kept UH in the WAC title race throughout until an eventual third-place finish. UH turned heads again in the Big West, finishing better than its preseason pegging in each of its first two seasons. The 2013 season also saw UH record its first winning road record in a decade, including back-to-back wins against Pac-12 opponents. Prior to joining UH, the Northern California native served as an assistant for the University of San Francisco women’s team for three seasons. While there, he proved to be an integral part of the Dons’ success. He guided a group of goalkeepers who lowered their goals-against-average in each season and helped the team achieve a win-ning record for the first time since 2004. After the 2009 season, the team was ranked as one of the top 25 most improved teams in the country. In 2010, he led a pair of goalkeepers to the lowest numbers of goals allowed in conference play in the program’s history, while also posting two shutouts in conference for the first time in more than 10 years. Herman also guided his players to academic success as the team’s grade-point-average rose from 2.92 to 3.3 during his tenure. Herman started his coaching career at Pinole Valley High School in 2006 as head coach for the girl’s varsity soccer team. He then spent one season as an assistant coach at Contra Costa Community College and also worked with the Bay Oaks Soccer Club as head coach of its U18 girl’s team (2007-09) and U15/16 teams (2009-11). In the spring of 2008, he served as a goalkeeper coach at San Francisco State and helped lay the foundation for a Gator team that posted 13 shutouts that fall. Herman is a 2007 graduate of Saint Mary’s College where he earned a degree in Spanish. He played one season as goalkeeper for the Gaels before taking a year off due to injury. He then transferred to Holy Names University for one season of action before injury ended his collegiate playing days for good. Herman holds an NSCAA Premier Diploma, USSF “B” License and an NSCAA Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma. Herman and his wife, Blair, live in Honolulu.
Marc Fournier was hired in the spring of 2011 as an assistant coach for the UH women’s soccer team. Fournier’s primary responsibility is working with the team’s goalkeepers. He also oversees the program’s academic progress and helps coordinate the team’s various youth camps. In the last three seasons, he helped mentor record-setting goal-keepers Kanani Taaca and Monk Berger. In back-to-back seasons, Taaca did not miss a single play, tallying more than 3,500 consecutive minutes in front of the net. Berger, meanwhile, enjoyed one of the best freshman seasons in program history in 2013. She set a new single-season record with seven shutouts and earned National Freshman of the Week honors and conference weekly honors (twice) before being named to the all-Big West freshmen team at season’s end. UH has also achieved success in the classroom under the guid-ance of Fournier. The program has earned a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award list each of the last two years with a team GPA better than 3.0. UH also has had nearly 20 academic all-league citations over the past three seasons. Fournier, 33, has coached on the collegiate, high school and club levels in Hawai‘i. Fournier first worked with head coach Michele Nagamine in the fall of 2009 when he helped train the goalkeepers at Kamehameha Schools. He also developed and trained girl’s U14 and older for the Le‘ahi Soccer Club. For two years, Fournier served as the goalkeepers coach for the men’s program at HPU. In 2009, he mentored all-conference keeper Matt Terry, who was rated as the nation’s 14th-ranked keeper with a goals-against-average of 0.75. Terry also posted four shutouts while surrendering 10 goals in 14 matches. In addition to his on-field duties, Fournier also assisted in recruiting, travel, fundraising and recruiting for the Sea Warriors. Fournier played collegiate soccer for two seasons at UH-Hilo and was a member of the inaugural team in 2006. As a senior for the Vulcans in 2007, he posted 53 saves in 18 games. He averaged 2.94 saves per match and halted 58 shots on goal, earning PacWest Conference second-team honors in the process. Fournier, a native of the Bordeaux region in France, earned his master’s in human resource management from HPU. He graduated from UH-Hilo with a BA in geography and also holds a degree in market-ing, management and sales from the University of Bordeaux. He is married to former Rainbow Wahine soccer standout Joelle Sugai and is also a licensed shiatsu massage therapist.
