Fieldays Site no. LS58

The air of celebration in Waikato, with the Mystery Creek Fieldays giving its annual rural adrenaline shot to the wider economy, is echoed here at Waikato Farming Lifestyles, as we celebrate our first year of bringing the monthly publication to the region.

The support we have received has been humbling, and a reflection of the enthusiasm Waikato people have for their province and way of life.

As our birthday then is virtually marked by the National Agricultural Fieldays, it’s fitting that we mark that event in style and our edition this month brings you a comprehensive guide to what’s on at the event.

Of course, we look beyond the farm gate elsewhere in this issue.

There’s a look at the north Waikato farm ‘Hinemoa’ — home to the Nicholson family since 1945. From a traditional grazing property, it has become a major cropping operation. Diversification, as is often the case, has brought more rural success as the property produces onions, potatoes barley and pumpkins.

We sneak into town this month to check out an historic building after a $10m face lift that provides a boost to the tourism industry. Known as Quest Hamilton, its roots lie in the farming industry after it served from 1919 for the merged NZ Dairy Association and the Waikato Co-operative Dairy Co Ltd.

Elsewhere in this edition, Beth McVerry tells us of her Mediterranean miniature donkeys, with only 130 registered nationwide. The animals originated in the Mediterranean area of Northern Africa before migrating to the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, and on to Europe and the US.

And we look over the fence at Te Kauwhata’s Herb Haven, an acre of herb gardens around a renovated cottage, boutique accommodation, a seasonal tearoom and a shop where lavender mustard, garlic sauces, chutneys and jams are on the counter.

These are just three different facets of the overall rural lifestyle and each month we will bring you more of the best the Waikato has to offer.

Ideal maize to maize feed

Reason 1 to use Devour... MaizeAfter maize harvest the same paddock is often sown back into maize the following spring. Devour is the ideal ryegrass to use for grazing/silage during this time.

Retired dairy farmer, and National field days’ chairman, Warwick Roberts, has probably never been so busy as the Mystery Creek event looms, and at the same time has

the organisers looking to the future.

“It’s all on, and just clearing my emails takes a lot of my time,” said Warwick.

He remembers working as a volunteer on fencing off the original field days’ site as a young farmer at Te Rapa 41 years ago.

“I dropped out of involvement after seven years and devoted time to the dairy industry, first through Federated Farmers and then as a dairy company director. After retiring from farming I renewed my involvement in the field days’ society and have developed my understanding of the complex event.”

A lot of his focus is on the future and to this end, expressions of interest in the region’s first event-scape design contest, the Master Plan Design Challenge, closed last week, and results will be announced on May 25.

This is the opportunity to reshape Mystery Creek Events Centre’s 88-hectare property and it attracted 11 specialist firms based within New Zealand and overseas.

The event organisers and land owners, National Fieldays Society, are pleased with the level of entries considering the tight two-week application period.

Assets and Facilities committee chair, Tony Begbie, says a scrupulous judging process, selected three finalists who have been invited to continue the

A grand design for eld days

“We have come a long way from the first Mystery Creek event and we could do with some more space”

competition. Each finalist company is awarded $5,000 for this achievement.

“The judging panel were extremely impressed by the calibre of applicants, presentation standards and the range of master planning experience; local, national and international,” he added. “The selection process focussed not only on capability, but also understanding of the project, and what different perspective the applicants could bring to Mystery Creek Events Centre.”

The finalists are:

GHD, a design and architectural consortium led by Melissa Clark, ‘whose technical specialities include urban design, transport planning and landscape architecture both nationally and internationally’.

MOAA architects are based in Hamilton. They combine individual abilities and spearheading the team is Tim Horne ‘who has extensive experience across a range of project scales and has developed a reputation for an inquisitive and innovative approach to design’.

The third finalist is Beca Group, one of Asia Pacific’s largest privately owned consultancies dealing with planning, architecture, urban design and landscape architecture, engineering and project management. Project director for Beca is Richard Douch ‘who has led the planning components of a number of growth management and/or tourism related projects within the Waikato’.

Finalists have already submitted their site design and rationale for the expansive Mystery Creek campus. Winners will be announced at a function on Friday May 25 and the first phase of the project is expected to begin later this year.

Behind the scenesThe Waikato Farming Lifestyles

paper you’re holding is the work of many dedicated people, but chief among them is a lady who’s been with the publication since day one, and who has real hands-on knowledge of farming in New Zealand.

Glyn Parker is the lead salesperson for Waikato Farming Lifestyles and it’s her pleasure to work with the businesses which make the Waikato the ‘engine room’ of the nation’s rural economy… mainly because, as she says, country people are relaxed, easy going and down to earth — qualities which are easy to like and respect.

Glyn was married to a dairy farmer for 15 years, farming in the Kaipara, the Bay of Plenty and in Waitakaruru just outside of Ngatea. The challenges and opportunities of working in agri-business have given her a unique insight into what it means to be a Kiwi farmer and just what it takes to support the rural sector.

Glyn would like to thank all those wonderful people who have supported the Waikato Farming Lifestyles publication since the beginning — contributors, advertisers, readers and well wishers from across the region. And, with the help of a great team of salespeople, designers and support staff, you can be sure of many memorable issues to come!

Three generations have worked the north Waikato farm ‘Hinemoa’ since it was first purchased by Charles and Jesse Nicholson in 1945 — each generation adding to the success of the previous.

In the early days it was farmed as a sheep and beef unit, but nowadays the successive Nicholson’s — John and now his son Chris, along with their respective wives, Claire and Vikki have created a thriving commercial growing business producing onions, potatoes barley and some pumpkin.

The home farm — a 200 hectare property on Murray Rd in Pukekawa is

Pukekawa family reaprewards from commercial cropping

by Annette Lambly-Robinson

Good working family partnerships are one of the reasons for the success of Hinemoa Quality Produce — that along with clever business management, passion, dedication and hard work

worked in conjunction with an adjacent leased 60ha. Hinemoa employs four full time staff including foreman and ‘number one’ man Jeff Billington and around 18 casual staff in the pack house.

In the late 1970s, John, troubled by ongoing facial eczema ousted the flock and diversified into cropping and finishing beef steers. He still manages around 150 head, and works alongside Chris in the commercial growing operation established 20 years ago.

Around 140ha is cropped — squash pumpkins and maize have been trialled and discarded — it’s onions and potatoes that are the main-stay crops. Grown for both the domestic and export markets — 70 percent of onions and 30 percent of potatoes are exported.

Onions are direct drill sown in April. Harvesting begins with the early onions in November and carries on through to March. Potatoes are planted all year round — six different varieties are planted according to each variety’s growing season.

Vikki and Chris are proud of their enterprise and love the lifestyle it provides for their family

“In a district where the average

Cattle graze the fields after harvest to clean up anything left behind. Any rejects are also ‘monitored’ and fed to the cattle to safe guard against accidental choking.

A small amount of crown pumpkin is grown predominantly for the domestic market and barley is harvested for grain, then baled for straw. The stubble is ploughed back in as a restorative crop. Mustard is grown for weed control and also as a restorative androtational crop.

The rich volcanic soil is perfect for growing and the Nicholsons’ don’t take it for granted. The land faces north/west. The north provides sun for early planted potatoes, the westerly prevailing wind prevents frost.

Soil testing, nutrient budgeting and regular expert consultation is undertaken. Shelter belts are used to advantage and silt traps used to minimise soil loss.

Conventional fertiliser is applied, and mushroom compost and poultry manure

(both available locally) is spread annually on all paddocks.

In a district where the average organic matter content of the soils is two percent, the Nicholson’s is six percent and rising

“We were one of the first growers in the district to do this and while it took two to three years to see the improvement, it is really paying off.

“The soil holds moisture and breaks down better and the yields get bigger and bigger each year. We have had a bumper crop of onions this year.” she said.

The families have always had a passion to protect the land. Ten hectares of native bush is protected by a covenant and an additional 12ha covenanted about 12 years ago. They have also undertaken a wetland area as an ongoing project and continue to plant and manage this.

“We can hear the tui and birdlife — it’s wonderful,” said Vikki.

Five years ago they built an 80,000 cubic metre catchment dam to irrigate the farm, and this has proved itself as essential for sustainable cropping.

Vikki says she is daily reminded of the benefits of raising a family in a rural environment and their children Julia (14) and Thomas (11) are reminders of the importance of environmental stewardship of the land.

In March Hinemoa Quality Producers won the Waikato region’s Supreme Ballance Farm Environment Award. They will participate in the grand final for the national title on June 23 in Wellington.

The historic building, once a landmark feature of Hamilton city, and now spruced up with a $10m

makeover, is poised to exert its presence as part of Hamilton’s burgeoning tourism industry.

Built in 1919 following the merger of the NZ Dairy Association and the Waikato Co-operative Dairy Co Ltd, its importance to the economic and social history was significant.

In 1928 — eight years after it opened its doors — a promotional brochure published at the time highlighted the company’s success, providing a fascinating picture of dairying in the region, including its history.

Old ‘Anchor’ building

by Annette Lambly-Robinson

The opening in March of Quest Hamilton — on the corner of London and Victoria Street is seen as a coup for Auckland developers Safari group, new owners Quest, and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust

“The brochure described the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company as ‘one of the largest producing co-operatives in the world’, with a staggering turnover of £6,333,849 for that financial year alone,” says Gail Henry, the NZ Historic Places Trust’s lower northern area manager.

At the time, the company had 10,000 shareholders and employed about 800 staff. Production figures for that year tell their own story — 26,072 tons of butter, 4250 tons of cheese and 4100 tons of powdered milk — and hinted at an even greater future.

“The NZ Dairy Company building was at the heart of an enterprise that incorporated 16 central butter factories, 17 cheese factories, two Glaxo factories, three milk powder factories, a condensed milk factory and a central casein factory,” says Ms Henry.

In addition, the company had its own research laboratory, box and tin factories, timber yard, engineering workshop — and even its own coal mine.

“The box factory in Frankton was itself an early marvel of mass production, in that year alone churning out a million containers from undressed timber,” she says.

The Anchor dairy brand butter produced commanded premium prices in London.

Inspired by a tattoo he saw on an ex-sailor’s arm, Henry Reynolds — the father of Waikato dairying — devised the ‘Anchor’ trademark, which would become one of the world’s most universally recognised brands, and an agricultural icon — a glass door in the building still bears the symbol.

It is uncertain when the building fell into disuse. Targeted by vandals in recent years, many of its windows had been boarded up. Although structurally sound, the condition of the building was

The two most common chronic muscle problems are Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Fibromyalgia (FM). Both FM and PMR are autoimmune diseases and result in muscle pain but that is about where the similarities stop. PMR mostly affects those over 60 and common symptoms are stiffness and pain commonly around the neck and shoulders especially in the mornings. Around 20% of people with PMR also develop Temporal Arteritis. This is caused in ammation of the major arteries which pass through the temple causing vision problems and even blindness.

The major medical therapy is the steroid prednisone which blocks the production of in ammatory cytokines usually with a rapid reduction in symptoms. Many recover in a year or so but others have this for an extended period or nd that it recurs after a period of remission. People on statin medicines need to be aware that these can exacerbate PMR symptoms which is why I invariably add CoQ10 to those with PMR who take statins.

Nutritional therapy complements the effects of prednisone by reducing immune system production of in ammatory chemicals. We add a wide range of antioxidant and anti-in ammatory compounds to assist energy production and to lower in ammation. Serious fatigue is a feature of PMR and increases in energy is often the rst bene t people feel from nutritional therapy.

FM is a lot more complex. These are often referred to as FM syndromes as they involve other problems especially Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There are relatively few medical treatment options but the most common are tri-cyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline taken in single evening doses to treat both pain and insomnia.

FM is more dif cult to treat with nutritional therapy as it is not a simple in ammatory problem. It appears that muscle mitochondria are damaged by free radicals which impair muscle bre function which reduces energy and causes pain (M. Cordero et al, 2010). I have found people get real bene ts from intensive multi-antioxidant therapy including CoQ10, OPC, resveratrol and many others. I always add broad spectrum vitamin and minerals and often high dose MSM before bed to help with muscle oxygenation. Curiously, as with PMR people with FM often notice an improvement in energy before any reduction in pain. Give me a call if you need help.

Old ‘Anchor’ buildingvery poor when purchased by Safari in 2011. Work began in June the same year.

The result is impressive, with the retention of all the building’s original façade. Its ‘Crittall’ windows and double cavity red brick walls were carefully restored, with NZHPT’s heritage professionals working alongside the developers. There was little internal integrity surviving, but where it was the developers have incorporated detail such as beautifully-curved stairwell bannisters that provide a subtle but graceful interior heritage sense.

Quest Hamiltion is leased by franchise director, Lee Hare, who along with her family lives on site. All but seven of the 38 apartments had been sold at the time of opening, mostly to overseas investors.

It is operated similar to a hotel with four-and-a-half star apartments available to rent from one night to one year. Varying from studio size to two bedrooms, and inter connecting apartments all are fully furnished and have full kitchen facilities.

Many guests prefer to cook themselves but Quest offers various services including local restaurant chargeback, pantry shopping service, valet dry cleaning, and a baby-sitting booking service .“It’s virtually a home away from home,” said Ms Hare.

Business is brisk — the majority of guests (although not restricted to) are business corporate or international clients.”

“It is a lovely building which has retained all its charm, but is comfortable and very accessible to the heart of Hamilton,” she said.

Besides having an eye for a brand, even more impressive, Henry Reynolds saw the potential in commercial butter production and export when dairying was more a sideline than a mainstay of farming.

In the late 1870s, Henry Reynolds had begun the arduous task of draining Waikato swamp land and developing it into pasture. The result was some of the best dairying land in the world.

In 1886 Reynolds built the Waikato’s first creamery at Pukekura near Cambridge.”

By 1902 he had established his own slice of dairy paradise at the Woodlands estate near Cambridge, and had converted about 11,000 hectares of swamp into pasture running 40,000 sheep and 3000 head of cattle.

Although Reynolds struggled initially, his eventual success was replicated by farmers around the Waikato, transforming the landscape and spawning a whole new industry.

Dairying was big business — and big news, with local newspapers carrying lengthy accounts of shareholder meetings and negotiations taking place with key markets around the world to establish the best price for dairy commodities.

“The success of dairying resulted not only in a growing export industry, it also fostered a way of life that is still very much a part of our culture today.

Arguably Reynolds laid the foundations of what became New Zealand’s greatest export trade.

Former dairy goat farmers the McVerry’s moved to a 12-acre lifestyle block on the outskirts of Cambridge about 11 years ago. Beth had grown up around horses, but had always had a special affection for donkeys. Her parents had kept one as company for stud charolais show cattle when she was young and as a child she had loved hitching him to a buggy and going for a ride.

When the couple’s older of four children starting leaving home Beth felt she had a little more time on her hands to indulge in one or two passions of her own and the Mediterranean miniature donkeys had captured her heart.

“Apart from the fact they are so very cute, they

are also a little different to other donkeys and being different appeals to me, said Beth. (She also keeps various breeds of Galloway cattle — but that is another story).

First introduced to New Zealand in 1997 there are only 130 registered purebred Mediterranean donkeys nationwide. Since all these (and most registered stock in the world) originated from America they are commonly referred to AMMDs — American Mediterranean Miniature Donkeys.

Miniature donkeys originated in the Mediterranean area of Northern Africa before migrating to the islands of Sicily and Sardinia off the west coast of Italy.

by Annette Lambly-Robinson

The affection for her donkeys is obvious in Beth McVerry’s voice whenever she is asked about her four-legged friends.

Now almost extinct in their native Sicily and Sardinia the little donkey was saved from virtual extinction by an American sharebroker, Robert Greene, who had a small group shipped to America in the 1920s, where he, and then others, bred them. There popularity ensured their numbers are no longer under threat.

Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys are a naturally small donkey — they haven’t been ‘bred down’ in size from regular donkeys. It is thought it was nature’s way of future proofing their existence in their natural habitat where food was often scarce.

Beth says fully grown they mature to no higher than 36 inches at the wither. Most of her donkeys range in height from 30 inches to 33 — “making them perfect to cuddle and love.’

Short, stocky with a round rumps and a smaller head than their larger counterparts, they are sure-footed, good foragers, loyal and very affectionate.

“They are also super intelligent and adore human contact,” says Beth.

They come in a wide range of colours including duns, chocolate browns and skewbalds.

Like most donkeys they have a cross on their backs — a black dorsal stripe running from the wither along the spine to the rump and then down either side of the wither to their shoulders.

Apart from son Ross’s much loved standard-sized donkey Sassy, Beth now has five AMMD jennies (female) , one AMMD jack and four other jennies including two part bred miniatures.

She aims to breed 10 good jennies and will find loving homes for the part miniatures as she builds up her herd of pure AMMD’s.

“We have some very good dedicated breeders and good bloodlines in New Zealand so there is no trouble selling them — many are sold to Australia. People sometimes have to go on a waiting list for stock.”

Apart from using her own jack, Beth also out-mates to others stud’ imported jacks — six foals are expected this September.

Donkey husbandry is similar to that of a horse, with the exception their coats are not as waterproof so Beth‘s husband Paul has built some little donkey barns for them to shelter in their paddocks

during inclement weather. “My older girls are covered in winter.” says Beth. She has had no need to hard feed her herd, but does give the youngsters weaning supplement and all of them a mineral supplement by way of lick blocks.

“They are perfect for our hilly country and just thrive.”

Once beast of burden, today they are kept mainly as pets, as riding animals for children or for carriage, and buggy driving.

“People associate donkeys with stubbornness, but in fact they are not — they freeze if frightened — as opposed to bolting like a horse — but once they feel confident or trusting they will move off nicely.”

It was the charm of a derelict turn of the century farm cottage coupled with a romantic fantasy that inspired Trish Budd’s now well known Herb Haven

Te Kauwhata’s Herb Haven, situated one kilometre off State Highway 1, boasts an acre of medicinal, culinary, fragrant and cosmetic herb gardens.

In additional to it ascetic value, the pretty renovated cottage and an adjacent boutique villa offers accommodation, a seasonal tearoom and a shop where a range of herbal products and culinary delights such as lavender mustard, garlic sauces, chutneys and jams can be purchased. They are the same products — that once graced shelves in New York’s finest delicatessens including New York’s renowned deli ‘Dean and Deluca’ (once voted Times’ best New York deli) and Australia’s David Jones stores.

The tea shop serves Devonshire Tea, Victorian Tea or High Tea — lavender

scones, decadent sweet cakes, savouries and sandwiches.

But twenty years ago farmers Trish and Ian Budd, along with their young children had simply bought a dairy farm on Plantation Road, in the heartland of Waikato to pursue their dairying career.

For the first few years Trish dedicated her spare time to collecting and planting up gardens brimming with herbs around

the little cottage. She potted, planted and sold, supplementing the family income at a time when dairying was not as good as had been hoped.

When her youngest child went to school Trish renovated the cottage putting in a small registered kitchen, a little shop and tiny tearooms.

She baked her delicacies and even began running bread making classes as she had long perfected her herbals breads feeding her family. The classes still run over the winter months when the tea room closes. Business as they say flourished with family often pitching in to help.

In 1995 the family made the decision to sell the farm and retaining only fives acres with their house and cottage they relocated a villa from Huntly to be used as larger commercial kitchen and tearooms. It became a popular stop for tourist buses.

Nowadays the tearooms have been downsized and the cottage is one of three rooms offered as Bed and Breakfast accommodation.

Covering 40 hectares at Mystery Creek Events Centre, Fieldays was booked virtually to capacity by early May with exhibitors keen to be front and centre at Australasia’s biggest agri-business show running for four days from June 13-16.

More than 1000 exhibitors are expected to fill up the 1400 sites. Outdoor agricultural sites were already 99% booked by May and the sought-after indoor Mystery Creek Pavilion was also fully subscribed. Organisers were expecting to reach capacity well ahead of previous years.

Exhibitors can be confident of getting their products and services out to a wide audience. More than 117,000 people attended the event last year.

This year’s Premier Feature or central theme is ‘The Changing Face of Farming’, focussing on the various land ownership models and the change in farming approaches of New Zealanders. The theme incorporates the shift from traditional family owned farms and the resulting effects on the rural landscape. Situated at the centre of the Fieldays site, the Premier Feature exhibition will have its own dedicated seminar area.

Other areas of interest during Fieldays include the Ag Art Wear and Innovation competitions. The Ag Art Wear wearable

The Invention section of the competition attracts rural innovations which are not commercially produced but demonstrate ingenious ideas, whereas the Equipment section allows professionals and businesses to showcase new or improved rural products. Innovations can already be on the market for up to six months before Fieldays, with businesses treating the competition as a platform to launch their product to the industry.

A forum, held by experienced business leaders, will address the numerous start up challenges often faced by entrepreneurs.

The popular fencing competition, one of Fieldays original events, will be held again with the Golden Pliers and Silver Spade awards up for grabs. Tractor Pull

competitions, logging demonstrations, extreme air displays, machinery and stock handling exhibitions offer plenty of outdoor action for visitors.

It’s not all business and machinery though. The popular Kiwi’s Best Marquee has been sold out for weeks with companies keen to showcase their food and beverage products. Celebrity chefs will be demonstrating ways to use exhibitors’ products in the Kiwi’s Best Kitchen Theatre, and visitors are unlikely to go hungry with 35 food vendors around the site.

One of the most popular exhibits returning this year is the Lifestyle Marquee — more than 2,000 square metres of exhibition space featuring all kinds of products and services which complement the rural lifestyle.

The NZ National Fieldays Society is a not-for-profit charitable organisation, run by a committee of volunteers and a team of more than 35 staff members working for weeks beforehand, with additional staff taken on during the event.

This year’s strategic partners and major sponsors are ANZ and the University of Waikato.

Energy 4800 is a very high energy food for dogs taking part in sustained and/or intense activity.

The food is adapted for working dogs’ intense activity levels and dogs in extreme conditions (temperature and weather).

During effort, the working dog needs energy that is quickly available and usable by the muscles. Energy 4800 is a nutritionally balanced diet high in protein and fat to build strength and muscle mass.

Exercise places stress on the body which can lead to sprains and fractures. Energy 4800 helps to protect the joints due to the balanced combination of phosphorous and calcium, and the presence of chondroitin and glucosamine.

Energy 4800 further aids digestion to minimise stress-induced diarrhoea to ensure your dog remains strong and healthy for the day’s work ahead.

Prolan natural quad bike protection and general farm lubricant

With the general day to day running of quad bikes along dairy farm treks, near coastal areas — or any other corrosive environment — manure, dirt, sand or mud — or simply long term storage — the underside of bikes quickly corrode. Prolan NZ specialises in the manufacture of environmentally friendly lanolin lubricants, corrosion inhibitors and anti-seize greases. Prolan once sprayed underneath quad bikes, will last on a bike frame from 9 months to 2 years (depending on use) and won’t wash off — so bikes can be waterblasted and the frame and product remain intact — providing excellent protection. Many quad bike frames rust out within 3 years.

Prolan’s main ingredient lanolin (natural wool grease) is one of the most versatile natural substances on the planet. It’s unique properties surpass other petrochemical products in performance, reliability, longevity, protection, safety and asset management.

Use Prolan to preserve, lubricate and protect your assets to ensure their longevity. Use Prolan on tractors, quad bike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation, spraying equipment, fertilisers, trucks and electrical hardware.

It is at this time of the year that a lot of Agricultural harvesting is being carried out. A squeak in the mower or the elevator can soon be resolved with Prolan. One spray and the noise disappears, parts are protected and Prolan stays on. Once harvesting is complete haymaking equipment can be sprayed with Prolan to protect whilst in storage till the following year.

For seized hinges or padlocks out on the farm Prolan can save a lot of time. One spray can save months of continual maintenance and headaches. Gates swing freely and the Prolan continues to lubricate and protect.

The ability of Prolan to ‘STAY-ON’ and its environmental friendliness, safeness and versatility ensure assets are well protected and time is saved on maintenance.

Using materials found or used on the land, designers will be creating works of art for models to exhibit down the runway during the National Agricultural Fieldays.

Visitors to the Ag Art Wear show, which will be held twice daily at 11am and 2pm from June 13 — 16, will be amazed and inspired as everyday bits and pieces are transformed into ‘wearable art’.

From its initial launch in 1994, the Ag Art Wear has steadily grown. The original one category has expanded to four: Avant Garde, Avant Garde under 21, Designer Traditional, and Landcare Awareness.

The Avant Garde category challenges designers to create a piece of art that can be either worn or mounted on the body, keeping away from the traditional clothing styles.

Wearable rural art on the runwayby Denise Gunn

To encourage younger designers, an Avant Garde under 21 category has been developed to include individual creators and those at secondary and tertiary institutions.

Judges will look for uniqueness, boldness, colour and the wow factor in these sections.

Entrants in the Designer Traditional category are also encouraged to add an ‘Avant Garde’ factor to their creations but in keeping with this section’s criteria.

A uniqueness of the design’s material, as well as originality incorporating an art factor while still resembling conventional garments, will catch the judges’ attention in this category.

The Landcare Awareness category will challenge designers to use native flora and fauna in their body garment creations.

Designers in this category are encouraged to consider artistic and creative garments using a combination of natural items and include a supporting background story.

Judges will take into consideration the appropriate use of materials used

as well as the visual impact, art factor and uniqueness of the entries.

This category aims to draw attention to both environmental and farm management topics.

A People’s Choice Award is also available and decided by public voting.

Grandpa’s Feeders, is a fully owned and operated New Zealand family business which started around 16 years ago when Bill Kirkham designed a feeder for his chooks which kept the rats and sparrows out. His invention worked so well that he and his son Mark decided to turn it into a business.

Mark exhibited the Grandpa’s Feeder for the rst time at Mystery Creek in 1999 con dent he would sell many units as everyone with chooks had the same pest problems. He only sold eight feeders, and although a little discouraged, they didn’t give up. They made improvements and designed different sizes to meet what the market was asking for. They have just completed their 13th Mystery Creek Fieldays with six family members manning their exhibit but still struggling to speak to everyone visiting their site.

There are a growing number of copycat feeders popping up around the country trying to muscle in on the market they’ve created, but Grandpa’s believe that their feeder is of superior design and quality to the others on the market.

”We also offer a full money-back guarantee for 12 months after purchase, and offer full after sales service, said Mark.

“We are continually innovating and improving our products while maintaining that old-fashioned quality that has been the foundation of our success.”

The latest addition is a grill designed to prevent poultry from icking food out of the feeder.

They are often getting feedback from customers who have feeders up to 15 years old that are still working well. Their specialised feeders for zoos and bird sanctuary’s are becoming increasingly popular due to their indestructible quality. “That’s a bonus when it comes to keas,” added Mark.

A pest free solution

An expansive Rural Living area near Gate 4 at the National Agricultural Fieldays is dedicated specifically to products and services which complement the rural lifestyle.

The popular Rural Living Marquee will feature in this area as it returns to this year’s Fieldays with a new name — the Lifestyle Marquee.

Inside this marquee, one of the largest clearspan marquees in the country with over 2,000 square metres of exhibition space, Fieldays’ visitors will find plenty of products for sale and services available.

Within a short walking distance, visitors will find the Kiwi’s Best marquee with cooking demonstrations by guest chefs and an opportunity to sample delicious foods, gourmet treats and beverages.

The Bledisloe building, the Rimu Marquee and The Station offer plenty of exhibitors’ sites for visitors to look through and all undercover. The Bledisloe also provides a cafe, seating area and toilets.

As a world leader in the business of producing farm products that are the envy of the wider world, the country has developed a showplace at Mystery Creek that attracts the world to witness the Kiwi skill for cutting edge agricultural technology and innovation.

Of course it is also a venue for much more, and has a massive following in both town and country over four days of science, innovation, social development, entertainment and much more.

The event runs this year from June 13 to 16, and with the site just 10 minutes from Hamilton, Cambridge and Te Awamutu, it brings in a massive influx of visitors and a decided economic boost to wider Waikato. The event is

Bigger, better,brighter than ever

Things are gearing up for the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays — undisputedly the biggest agribusiness exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere

supported by two strategic partners — the ANZ bank and and the University of Waikato.

It’s gone from strength to strength and there will be more than 1,000 exhibitors on 1400 sites at the Mystery Creek Events Centre.

Its had sometime to remember that this massive occasion is under the wing of a not-for-profit charitable organisation, run by a committee of volunteers and a team of over 35 staff members with additional manpower during the event,

In todays world of course, the key to rural prosperity is very much focused on exports and the NZ Agribusiness Centre, recently acquired NZ Agritech

Inc, a group of agricultural exporters set up in 1994 to assist its members to achieve export growth.

A significant role of NZ Agritech has been arranging group participation in major agricultural shows overseas and and now the NZABC will build on NZ Agritech’s progress and aims to bridge the gap for exporters even further.

The NZABC is part of National Fieldays Society and responsible for the international exhibition area and business visitor lounge at the event, coordinating commercial opportunities and marketing activities for farmers and the wider industry. The NZABC aims to be known as an advocate for the industry on issues such as bio security, accessing funds for business growth and promoting us to the world.

Having become firmly established at Mystery Creek, rural inventions and innovations are a real crowd puller and this year the Innovation Competition again celebrates our ingenuity. If you have a backyard invention or commercial idea which is good for rural applications, this is the place to be.

Participants can enter their developments in one of two categories, Invention or Equipment. The Invention

section of the competition attracts rural innovations which are not commercially produced but demonstrate ingenious ideas to aid farming processes.

The Equipment section invites professionals and businesses to showcase new or improved rural products. Innovations can already be on the market for up to six months before Fieldays, with businesses treating the Innovation Competition as a platform to firmly launch their product.

Interested candidates are urged to enter their invention the Fieldays website www.fieldays.co.nz/InnovationCompetition2012.

All inventions are kept confidential until they are unveiled on the first day of Fieldays.

So with an accent on exporting opportunities, design innovation, and huge product and equipment displays, there’s plenty on the fielddays menu — and speaking of menu, there will also be fashion, food, competitions, prizes and a whole lot more going on as all roads lead to the Waikato next month.

13-16TH JUNE 2012National Fieldays

The competition, which has been held since 1973, features groundbreaking commercial improvements and backyard inventions, all with the aim of enhancing methods and improvements in farm efficiency.

The Innovation Competition is split into two categories ‘Invention or Equipment’.

Although entries in the Equipment category may have already appeared on the market for up to six months leading up to the Fieldays, businesses and professionals often find the Innovation Competition an ideal launching pad for their product.

The Invention category of the competition showcases rural innovations displaying resourceful and original methods to improve and develop farming practices. These inventions are not commercially produced.

Initial judging of the two categories will commence on June 13 on site during the Fieldays to determine which inventions reach the finals.

The Innovations Committee appoints independent judges with specialised expertise in agricultural science, practical farming and mechanical engineering.

Judges look for entries they consider to be a ‘breakthrough’ when determining the Invention awards.

Around 20 entries have been received for this year’s competition and exhibits will be unveiled on the opening day of the Fieldays in the Innovation Centre.

Last year’s Golden Standard award winner was Technipharm with their invention ‘Irrisafe’ — a speed control for effluent irrigators that reduces ponding problems.

ADF Milking took out the Equipment entry of the year with their ‘Automatic Teat Dipping and Flushing System’.

Brought up on a lifestyle block just outside Waiuku, Stephen Snedden, spent many hours tinkering in his dad’s shed making go-carts and 60cc enduro bikes. All this tinkering seems to have taught him a thing or two.

Stephen completed his apprenticeship at the Glenbrook Steel Mill as a tter and turner and was the winner of the National Apprentice Youth Skills Olympics for constructional steel in 1989. He then went on to represent New Zealand in Birmingham for constructional steel at the International Youth Skills Olympics the same year.

A well-known face at the National Fieldays, Stephen is exhibiting again this year with his engineering business WELDNZ located in Onehunga, Auckland.

Stephen won the Inventors Award at the 1996 National Fieldays for product improvement to a multi-grip hand tool. He is passionate about inventing and is best known for developing the Seahull, a world-class moulded polyethylene catamaran boat, which will be displayed at the Fielday. “The Seahull boat is the rst rotational plastic mould I have made and it was designed to suit rescue work in ooded areas and to be

the most practical boat in the world,” explains Stephen.

WELDNZ also supplies a wide range of welding products including arc welders, mig welders, tig welders and gas cylinders to own.

He also has other projects on the go and is part way through building an affordable, amphibian 4x4 ute. Stephen says, “this project is currently in the workshop so anyone who is interested is more than welcome to come and have a look.”

Stephen is dedicated to helping others to learn. “I aim to provide my customers with the right tools and teach them how to use them.” One-on-one training onsite or in Stephen’s workshop is also available.

Stephen likes to work with other inventors in developing ideas and getting products to the market. “If someone wants to develop an idea and is looking for a few pointers, I will work with them and be more than happy to sign a con dentiality agreement if required.” He has a broad knowledge and skill base and is able to help with everything from product development to engineering and marketing.

Through purchasing a Fieldays programme, visitors can plan their outing to cover as much ground as possible. The programme lists a daily and seminar timetable, exhibitors, food vendors and other event information during the four-day event.

Exhibitors also need to have a strategy in place to promote their business in front of the steady stream of Fieldays visitors.

To take full advantage of the space available and to attract visitors, a well-designed and presented site works well to showcase products successfully. This year’s Fieldays theme ‘The Changing Face of Farming’ could be incorporated into the site for extra interest.

A readily recognisable and well-positioned business name on the site makes identification faster and easier for visitors. Staff should also wear uniforms and ID tags to give a professional finish.

Well-presented products help catch the attention of Fieldays visitors. Products and/or service information needs to be easily accessible as well as secure.

Exhibitors’ sites are also required to be OSH compliant and meet Fieldays’ site safety requirements.

Do you suffer fromBACK or NECK PAIN?

If you suffer from back or neck pain, then come along to the National Fieldays and try the Teeter Hang-Ups Inversion Table.

Nanave Health Care0800 62 62 83 | www.inversionnz.co.nz

A three and a half year medical study recently completed at the Regional Neuroscience Centre in Newcastle by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care, found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment.

We will set the table at a slight angle of 20 degrees, which will gently take the pressure off your spine and relax you in a way you have never felt before.

Come along for a free stretch! You will love it!

After four years in NZ there are now enough people using the Teeter Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts, these really do work. We have helped thousands of people get ongoing relief from their back pain, do yourself a favour, come along and try for yourself.

Show Specials

Inversion therapy may help you with:• Reduce Back Pain• Relieve Stress• Stimulate circulation & Lymph Flow• Improve posture• Reduce Muscle Tension• Strengthen Ligaments• Increase Blood to the Brain• Reduce the effects of aging• Increase flexibility

Nanave Health Care was started nearly five years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and after spending a considerable amount of time and money trying every form of help available, had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I could still walk, there was always hope”, Dave tried every form of treatment and gimmick out there and on one of his overseas trips he discovered the Teeter Hang Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain completely disappeared and was gone for 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, he just knew now he had a place to go every time he got sick of the pain, “it was my happy place” he told me.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, it was then he decided to introduce Teeter to New Zealand and Nanave Health care was born.

Over the years Nanave have helped thousands of people get ongoing relief from their pain and have seen amazing results in not only backs, but hips and knees, necks, posture, circulation, increased height, we have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems. They even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children, the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results have been encouraging. Nanave now has a division putting the Teeters into Industry, as Back Pain is one of the major causes of lost production.

Both Dave and Nancy will be attending the Show, Dave realised that had he not tried the Teeter Inversion Table for himself he would have never bought one, “and look what I would have missed out on” he told me, that is why Nanave do the shows, their aim is to get people themselves to experience the Teeter Hang-Ups, “we let the tables do the talking” he told me.

Come along for a free stretch, if you have completely given up, it could just surprise you.

Health check for menNew Zealand men are typically silent when it comes to their health. The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is encouraging men to use the Fieldays to think about their health, as well as the health of their farms and businesses

Men still access health services less than women and when they do visit the doctor, they typically present late, denying themselves the chance of early detection and treatment.

The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society will be at the National Agricultural Fieldays in June and is encouraging men to talk about their health, learn about what to look for and learn when a visit to the doctor is a must.

“Statistics for men are poor. More men than women are diagnosed with cancer and more men die from it,” says Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society

Support Services Manager Graham Harbutt. “Men need to realise that getting a doctor’s check-up can make all the difference. The earlier you get diagnosed and treated, the better the chances are for a good outcome.”

Fieldays is the perfect location to talk about men’s health, especially as it’s one of the few times when the Society is able to capture the attention of so many rural people in one location.

“We don’t want it to be scary or dreary and find that most people learn best and want to find out more in a fun, interesting and interactive environment. Our colossal colon will be the main focus of the site with attendees able to walk through the 6.5 metre inflatable bowel, seeing firsthand the damage caused by poor bowel health.

“We hope our site will provide a great environment for people, in particular men, to become more aware of cancer and the importance of talking to your doctor if concerns arise,” says Graham.

You can find the Cancer Society and its colossal colon in the Rural Living Marquee site LS8.

Stewart Anderson always wanted to be a farmer.

It’s what he dreamed about as a young boy and even back then he use to pick out his top favourite cows from his father’s herd.

“All I’ve wanted to do is milk good cows,” he says. Much to the disappointment of my teachers who I think believed I should head for a career as a doctor or a lawyer,” he laughs

He and his wife Kathryn now farm their 180 hectare block at Otewa near Otorohanga. It’s close to the farm he grew up on and was originally owned by neighbours — the Emery’s.

“The farm near the Waipahu River had one owner between me and the Emery family,” says Stewart.

Nowadays the 50-something farmer breeds mostly KiwiCross cattle on the farm known as Arkan (not a stud name). It took some time to build up the herd, starting with Friesian over Jersey, then vice versa.

bulls have made it into the Livestock Improvement Premier Sires teams

The farm has not only been a central point for Stewart and his family but the Andersons have been involved in hosting exchange students with the AFS programme over the years.

“The exchange student programme also meant we’ve spent some time overseas as well as taking students

around NZ — which is my second favourite thing to do, as I’m passionate about this country,” Stewart says.

And while Stewart may have forgone his teachers’ hopes of a medical career the couple’s second daughter, Cheryl, is currently studying to become a GP. Eldest daughter Rochelle, is a theologian and mother, and youngest daughter Christina is training to be a vet.

The farm remains breeder’s greatest passionA Waikato farmer says he never considered any other career…

“I started looking at cross breeding as early as1980s, when there weren’t a lot of people doing it,” he says.

KiwiCrosses are a combination of pure bred Jersey and the high producing Friesian and are now considered the country’s most popular dairy breed.

The combination of the two breeds has resulted in what is called a ‘hybrid vigour’ animal — better producing and very fertile,’’ says Stewart.

The cattle have features of both breeds — the sleek good looks of the Jersey, with the more robustly-built, higher-producing Friesian.

NEW CRANE ARRIVING - 19 METRE REACHOn the move

by Denise Gunn

Although some herds will be trucked, others will be walked to new farms and it is essential that all stock are fit for travel, able to bear weight on all four limbs and be healthy enough to endure the stress of a journey.

As permits may be required when droving stock along public roads, it is advisable to contact your local council to verify the rules, regulations and guidelines relating to the correct procedure. This is also an ideal opportunity to check if there are any public events being held along your intended route which could disrupt your plans. Ensuring you have the requisite signs and enough people along the route is vital to assist with the smooth movement of your herd too.

Legislation from The Road Controlling Authority Forum’s ‘Best Practice Guidelines for Stock Crossings’ states ‘a person moving

untethered animals from place to place along or across a road must exercise due care towards other road users, and must ensure that any disruption to traffic is minimised’.

The Road Controlling Authority Forum comprises of road controlling authorities including councils and the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA).

If you are heading further afield, Federated Farmers recommends standing stock off green-feed for four to six hours before trucking. The practice keeps effluent off the roads and stock

On their 200ha farm near Tirau, the couple milk 550 cows through what may well be the oldest milk shed in the district, a 38-year-old rotary.

Twelve months ago they were joined on the farm by share milker, Irishman Bill Moore and his South African wife Anke.

An ongoing problem with mastitis, something all dairy farmers are familiar with, saw Bruce and Helen have the ADF (Automatic Dipping and Flushing) milking system installed on their farm last year.

Developed in the UK, ADF Milking has been operating since 2004. The system, designed to disinfect the teat immediately after milking and sanitise the cluster between cows, had already proven itself popular with farmers

overseas and was being used on farms throughout Europe, the US and Canada before its introduction into New Zealand and Australia.

Bill was already familiar with the ADF system as his parents had it installed some time ago on their farm in Ireland.

Today Bruce describes the system as ‘really good’ and says the incidence of mastitis is now well down.

“We’re getting far less cows with mastitis, the system is simple to use and we are having no problems with it. It’s been a good investment.”

Bill agrees and says he is very happy with its performance and ease of use. “You don’t get the cross contamination now. Since January we have only had

With the payout high and interest low, it’s a really good time to fix the things that are causing some grief around the Dairy. Before you upgrade to new Milfos cup removers or a Milfos Variable Drive Vacuum System it would be sensible to evaluate things that could impact on your proposed upgrade.Sparkies generally do a great job, however, we regularly come across wiring of all sorts that has been installed incorrectly. For instance we see the right cable used on say, a milk pump controller, but still bundled with everything else so it creates interference with the controller and bingo, a slightly crazy controller. Unless you know what to look for it can be a painful process to find as it looks like a faulty controller. This is important for all sorts of systems from pulsation controllers to cup removers and the more sophisticated the system the more careful you have to be. We recommend keeping data cables as far away from power as possible. We have all heard about stray voltage, yes it does exist and can cause all sorts of issues, we have found a major source is the cable and terminations between Variable drives and Motors. There is a lot of documentation supplied with variable drives with regard to the cable to be used and metal glands for terminations etc, these are minimums and a good Sparky will follow manufacturer’s recommendations or better. If in doubt get it checked.Don’t forget the effluent or water pump, same deal, and move the electric fence unit to the implement shed, they can be an interference nasty in the dairy. For sensible advice on Upgrades, find your local Milfos dealer or Area Sales Manager at www.milfos.com.

Notes from the shed with Mark McKewen

A lot of people ask if Milfos is from some distant foreign country. Well… no it isn’t. Milfos is a Kiwi company which has just celebrated 25 years serving NZ farmers and more recently farmers all around the world.

From humble beginnings in Hamilton, Milfos International is still here, now in a purpose built factory just off Kahikatea Drive in Hamilton. Milfos employs over 120 people with staff in several countries and growing fast.

A number of employees in the company have been here over fifteen years and many more over five years, which is a credit to the great family company it is.

A lot of what has been achieved in the last 25 years has been because of the Kiwi companies that have supplied Milfos with a huge array of high quality materials, products and services.

Of course, without the Milfos Service Partners here and overseas looking after farmers day to day activities, there wouldn’t be much of a business. With this in mind we recently held the Annual

Milfos Australasian Service Partner Conference in Hamilton.

At this conference we recognised many achievements with awards going to Service Partners around NZ and Australia for excellence in Installation and Customer Service across a wide range of categories.

Of course, there can be only one Supreme Dealer for 2012:

The Winners, Tony and Jan McLaren of McLarens Rural Services are based in Morrinsville, Waikato. They have a business founded on consistent excellence in customer service and superior installations both locally and in challenging overseas projects.

Milfos International and all of our Service Partners are committed to dairy farmers, and as a proud Kiwi Company we thank our customers for their continued support and know they are as excited about the future as we are.

For your nearest excited, highly skilled Milfos Service Partner go to www.milfos.com for details.

Low Maintenance Cost

But when you need a little more grunt, a bigger load capacity and an actual seat for your officer (i.e. not just a flat rack for the dog) it’s time to consider the new ‘swiss army knife’ of off roaders… the versatile UTV.

While the Big Bear 400 and its ilk are tough machines to beat, UTVs have become very popular in recent years for their blend of big vehicle versatility and small engine size. Though don’t let the 700ccs under the hood of the Yamaha Rhino fool you — this thing has power-to-weight grunt like a locomotive on steroids.

Of course the figures only tell half of the tale — a liquid cooled four valve OHC mill with fuel injection is the heart of the Rhino, but its clever engine mounting system has reduced vibration thanks to well engineered dampers and dual engine counter-balancers. The pistons themselves are Teflon slick to reduce wear and tear, coated with ceramic composite. And the cam chain has an automatic tensioner which means less noise and less maintenance.

Clever technology seems to have been the byword in the 2012 Rhino’s construction — there are features available on this machine which would not seem out of place on a

$100,000 SUV. Indeed, many off roaders could learn a thing or two from the way the Rhino’s transmission clicks smoothly from 2WD to limited slip 4WD and all the way through to fully locked without a fuss. As for gears — forget them! The Rhino packs a CVT automatic transmission that is set up to handle everything from tarmac to knee-deep mud… no gears, no fears.

Yamaha have also added neat little details like a tipping back tray (capacity — 181 kilos) with a single handle to upend the load, handy tie down points and a rubber tray mat. You can tell they’ve asked people in the real world what they use day by day out on the land… it shows in the blend of rugged simplicity and bulletproof technology which make up the finished Rhino.

2012 Rhino charges ahead of rivalsThere are some situations in which a quad bike just won’t do. Sure, machines like Yamaha’s trusty Big Bear are the backbone of modern farming, taking the place of the horse in the Kiwi back blocks

CRAIG STEVENS MOTORCYCLES LTD

Clic Wheel Systems Ltd, RotoruaPh/Fax 07 347 2292

www.clicdualwheels.co.nz

on Duals for more traction, stability, flotation, towing power, versatility.

Smooth cut with Clic DualsJohn Smith from Lawn Services — Takanini Auckland, has been using Clic Dual Wheels on commercial mowing jobs for the last few months, and feels they are the perfect complement to his Kubota ZD221 Zero Turn Mower

“The ‘clic’ dual system is an absolute dream, so easy to use. I love it! I can actually remove the wheels and still transport the Kubota on the same trailer, and then once onsite ‘clic’ them on. I’ve even worked out my mowing strategy — boundary cut with the left-hand wheel off. Once nished ‘clic’ on the left-hand wheel and get some serious mowing happening!”

Initially he was concerned that the Clic Dual Wheels might affect his zero turning capability — a worry that turned out to be groundless.

“At the end of each run and when I turn back to start the return cut, overlapping the previous one, the mower turns as easily as it did with just the single original wheels on the rear.”

One of Mr Smith’s contracts is a large ‘motorway bun’ — a

huge mound built to de ect vehicle noise. The mound sides are almost terraced like side of a weather-board house. With the Clic dual system he nds he gets an even smooth cut, even on a 30 degree angle doing sideways cuts.

Mr Smith also cuts an ef uent paddock with plenty of “soft spots”. Before having duals, he had to use a winch to retrieve the mower from bog spots; but is now delighted to nd that he has not had to winch at all since using the Kubota with his Clic Duals on.

“I’ve also noticed a more even and uniform cut because of the wider footprint of the Dual wheel system,” he says.

Vertical cuts are also a breeze now with no more rear tyre break out and subsequent “wild out-of-control downward slide.”

He says he has experienced no mechanical problems so far. “I have checked and re-torqued all the wheel mount hubs and everything came up trumps. I run the outside Clic Dual Wheels at 5 PSI and the original rears at 20 PSI.”

Mr Smith feels the Clic Dual Wheels have been a “fantastic” improvement to his mower.

Bill Guest, Farmers of New ZealandBe my GuestFarmers demand control of Fonterra

While the government describes the Dairy Industry Restructuring Amendment Bill as being enabling and Fonterra will make the final decision, many dairy farmers voiced major concerns overtrading amongst farmers and the Commerce Commission having oversight of the Fonterra price setting mechanism.

Many see this as being the introduction of draconian intervention whereby the government could intervene in public interest initiatives to control Fonterra’s milk price.

The future of New Zealand’s economy is closely tied to the performance of agriculture. Government intervention in the economy should be kept to a minimum.

This includes any legislation pertaining to the structure and operation of the Fonterra Dairy Co-operative and the

company’s shareholders must retain the final say on any legislative changes.

While the detractors have argued Fonterra sets the domestic milk price in New Zealand, the reality is that supermarkets stock a range of milk products, not only processed by Fonterra but also other New Zealand proprietary milk processors.

Other milk products such as cheese are manufactured by a number of independent processors and the prices for these products vary in range. The New Zealand housewife has a large selection to choose from, simply on price and supermarket mark-ups vary considerably.

Parliament’s primary production select committee met last week to hear submissions on the proposed Dairy Industry Restructuring Act

“ The future of New Zealand’s economy is closely tied to the performance of agriculture. Government intervention in the economy should be kept to a minimum”

If the government and the Commerce Commission were seen to be getting into the role of price setters this would be counter to free market policy.

New Zealand dairy farmers today, understand and are fiercely loyal to the principles of cooperation as a means of working together to sell their products.

It is clear from comments made by Prime Minister Jon Key that he would like to see external investors involved to maximise Fonterra’s profit. This rings alarm bells with a substantial number of farmers who are suspicious of the government’s intentions.

Farmers of New Zealand pointed out to the primary production committee that in 2001, during the Select Committee process hearing, there was one submitter who is now a Fonterra board member who then openly advocated incorporation of the Fonterra company. In addition he voiced support for differential payments to farmers based on transport costs and the need to be flexible in payments where Fonterra faced competition for milk supply.

The one thing about New Zealand dairy farmers is they have very long memories, and so they should have.

Some shareholders remain suspicious that the proposed stages are simply the first stages in the process of incorporation. They fear a loss of control and a risk to their long term profitability.

Fonterra is holding a special meeting of shareholders on 25 June to discuss the detail of the trading among farmers. Sir Henry van der Heyden, in a letter to shareholders said that while the majority of shareholders are urging the Fonterra board to get on with it, a small group of shareholders had concerns and were vocal in New Zealand media causing the issue to split the shareholder base and it was not in the best interests of the co-op’s future.

He was critical that instead of the shareholders resolving the matter in the family, debate was now spilling into international media and damaging Fonterra’s reputation. Farmers of New Zealand are disappointed that Sir Henry had admonished the farmers that have continued to voice their concern and that they should have kept it quiet within the family.

Well, Sir Henry, you may not be aware, that over the last hundred years there were many debates amongst farmers, and when Sir Walter Nash and the first Labour government formed the origins of the New Zealand Dairy Board not all farmers were happy about the then government’s proposed plans to legislate the sale of New Zealand dairy produce through the dairy co-operatives.

Sir Henry should exercise patience to allow for full discussion and disclosure of all information to enable Fonterra dairy farmer shareholders to confidently support change.
