Over the cattle stop featureWhat’s happening over the cattle

stop? As any farmer knows, the answer is — ‘everything!’ — as you can see in our light-hearted front page cartoon. This January the Northern Farming Lifestyles is a little different, as we’ve matched all of the

top agricultural support businesses between our covers with a bustling rural scene on page one.

The aim of the game is to match the numbers next to each little image of Kiwi farm life to the businesses who exemplify them.

Transport issues for debateNorthland’s transport system infrastructure is coming under the spotlight at a series of public meetings this month.

Northlanders are being urged to attend to make their views known to those planning the blueprints addressing some of the region’s most pressing transport issues.

“Everyone has a vested interest in securing the best ‘fit for purpose’ transport system Northland can afford,” says Regional Transport Committee chair, John Bain.

The NRC is holding the discussions on the Draft Regional Land Transport Plan and the Draft Regional Public Transport Plan as part of a public consultation process which began late last year. The schedule includes Dargaville on Monday, January 12, at the Dargaville Town Hall, from 5–7pm; Kaitaia on Tuesday January 13, Te Ahu Centre, from 2–4pm; Kaikohe on Wednesday January 14, Far North District Council chambers, from 2–4pm; Opononi; Thursday January 15, Opononi Town Hall, 5–7pm, and in Whangarei, Monday January 19, Northland Regional Council chambers, from 5–7pm.

“I’d really like to urge as many people as possible to attend one of the public meetings to come along and share their thoughts,” said Cr Bain.

He says the RLTP will serve as a ‘blueprint’ for tens of millions of dollars spending on the region’s roading

infrastructure over the next three years. “It attempts to address a raft of issues including things like regional route resilience and security.”

He said a lack of funding is the biggest issue facing Northland’s land transport and the draft plan represents a lot of hard work by people from a number of local authorities, government, and other agencies to get the best outcome from the money that is available.

The second plan — the RPTP — sets out how public passenger transport services and the assistance for the transport disadvantaged will be provided for over the next decade.

“Again, cost is an issue and a big challenge is how to continue to grow patronage while maintaining the affordability and quality of these services.”

The plan proposes investigating ways of improving user experience, including public transport information and ticketing options. Public consultation on both plans is running for a longer-than-usual six weeks given the recent Christmas/New Year break.

“We wanted to ensure there’s enough time for people to have a say while still enabling us to meet government funding deadlines.”

A young Fijian agricultural graduate’s visit to New Zealand has opened up new horizons.

Praneel Chand and his wife Prashna gained residency four months ago and they are excited about building

their future within the New Zealand dairy industry.

The couple say that obtaining residency has easily been the most challenging aspect of moving to live and work here. A work permit and an employment offer had to first be secured. JJ and JA Preekers started Praneel on their Waikato dairy operation milking 400 cows. From farm worker and quick learner he moved to second in charge. He stayed two and a half seasons and still maintains contact with the Preekers, who remain supportive of his career. “Good farmers and a good boss,” says Praneel.

An opportunity came up at Grant and Crawford Rear’s farm out of Kawakawa.

After a season Praneel became herd manager and he is now into his fourth year. “The chances are there — for those who want it. If you’re pretty keen you’ll be rewarded.”

He is enthusiastic about his work, which he describes as producing quality milk from the herd’s 550 cows, pasture management, managing the mating programme and overseeing the feed budget.

He is encouraged that milk solids have risen during his tenure due to improved resource management and increased cow numbers. The farm’s 1,200 hectares include a leased block and a runoff and alongside the dairying there is buying in and rearing calves and beef fattening. Grant and Crawford undertake these aspects of the operation.

The Chands have already run the farm for three months with relief staff. Raymond, newly on to the farm, works with them. Prashna’s first job in New Zealand was indoors and she is enjoying the change of occupation.

“I was a city girl, “she smiles, “but my grandparents came from a rural area, so it’s not that unfamiliar.” She has a Diploma in Electrical Engineering (electronics) and has been on several computer courses to manage new farm related programmes. The couple are united in working hard towards their goal — a fifty-fifty sharemilking position. Praneel is building up his own herd to take with him and is now keeping 40 cows, with the aim of increasing to 200. “If you have a good reputation you can move at the end of the season. It’s a fluid job market.”

Prashna and Praneel at work in shed

Praneel and Crawford Rear

Praneel and Prashna keep up strong connections with family. Prashna’s father has just retired and recently came over to visit. Every year the couple fly back , and this year they are looking forward to visiting the Gold Coast en route — the holiday there is a reward from their employers. Once in Fiji it’s a hectic round of catching up with everyone. Praneel squeezes in giving his father a hand on the family’s sugarcane farm. “But I start missing here after a while,” he acknowledges, gesturing around the

rolling farmland and the cowshed across the paddocks.

The couple’s home is the farm house on the property with its small garden and Zo, their pet dog. They find the local neighbourhood friendly. “At the Christmas party everyone on the road comes up to it.” However there is not much leisure time, as for this dynamic couple the present priority is their work. “These are the years for our efforts,” explains Praneel. “We see the door as wide open in this industry.”

A t the outbreak of war it was generally thought it would be a short campaign and men were keen to sign up. In

1911 Okaihau’s male population was only 500 and as the war continued every telegram with bad news was felt by the whole community.

Thomas (TF) Flood is a local man noted on the Okaihau memorial. Tom’s father Robert was a teacher who bought a farm in the Utakura Valley. Robert taught away at Te AhuAhu while Tom, the eldest of the family, ran the farm and managed their small shop on the Horeke — Okaihau road.

The young farmer enlisted in 1916. He trained at Trentham before leaving Wellington in early 1917 on the troopship Navua with James (Jim) Flood, a cousin, Thomas Russell, Charles Weston Thomas and Charlie’s brother Leslie

COUNTRYCOMMUNITYREMEMBERS WW1

Thomas. (Archie Thomas served also.) The four friends enlisted, commenced service and trained together in England and left for France the same day. They were posted to ‘C’ Company 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade.

The NZ Division became involved in the Third Ypres offensive. On October 12, 1917, under General Haig, the attack on Passchendaele began at 5.25am in driving rain. By mid-morning 840 New Zealand soldiers had been killed — six per cent of those killed in the war. 138 died from wounds the following week.

No 3 NZ Field Ambulance report: — [Official History of New Zealand Rifle Brigade. B Jordan cited.]

‘On the morning of the 12th, anxiety for the Brigades in front, practically isolated owing to the conditions already detailed, was heightened by the feeble

nature of the barrage put down for their protection; and soon the wounded began to come in, exhausted, covered with mud, and bringing disheartening reports which were later to be confirmed in a very distressing manner. The Medical Corps was hampered almost to impotence by the unavoidable slowness of evacuation. At least six men were required to carry each stretcher. The main road leading back was submerged, with the water up to the knee level. Many wounded lying around the pill-boxes perished either from exposure to the elements or from almost uninterrupted shell-fire. The only possible tracks were harried by the enemy’s artillery, and it is more than probable that many men, whose bodies were found unburied months afterwards, had been drowned in the liquid mud, which in places acted like a quick-sand’.

Tom was killed at Passchendaele that day. His name is recorded at Okaihau and at Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres, Belgium, where 35,000 soldiers are remembered including the 1,179 New Zealanders buried where they fell.

Thomas Russell was killed 1918 at Bapaume. Charlie and Les Thomas were wounded at the same time. Charlie recovered in England from trench foot and came back to establish a blacksmiths and wheelwrights business with Acky Anderson.

Les returned to farming. Jim Flood’s father and Tom’s were brothers. At Passchendaele Jim endured severe trench foot and following hospitalisation he recovered in Ireland with his grandmother whom he had never met. (His parents had emigrated as newlyweds.)

This year marks a hundred years since the start of World War One — the ‘war to end all wars’. Town and district memorials throughout New Zealand commemorate those who served. The rugged hill country around Okaihau in the north was a far cry from the mud and barbed wire of the Great War’s trenches. But young men from this remote part of what was then the British Empire signed up to serve their country proudly, in theatres of war such as the bloody and terrifying Ypres front. Many did not return home.

Jim saw all his relatives in County Kildare and stayed in the house his father was born in and which is still owned by family farming there today.

He married Florence Matilda Thomas and farmed at Okaihau and then at nearby Marangai, where his youngest

son Leo farms. Jim’s eldest son’s children are also on the property. Thanks to Leo and Paula Flood, Colin Thomas, Neil MacMillan and Brian Jordan, Brian is writing to WW1 Okaihau servicemen and is seeking information and photos, contact [email protected].

Waimate North Landcare Chairperson Daryl Way explains the Group has been deemed ineligible for funding under the government’s Conservation Community Partnerships funding. “Because we’re trapping on private land our work is considered ‘for private benefit’ — ‘unsustainable’. It started up without pre-arranged long-term funding — and is ‘not sufficiently transformative’.

“Together these beg the question of how many other Landcare and conservation groups will meet the funding criteria?

“We started out because we were told unless something was done kiwi would die out in Northland,” says Daryl. “We’ve seen kiwi population maintained and a steady improvement — over the long term kiwi numbers are up 30 to 40%.” Over thirteen years of consistent effort has secured these results.

Waitangi River KIWI’S CALL FOR PROTECTION

by Cynthia Matthews

It’s June and a cold fog lies in around the Waitangi River headwaters. The misty silence is broken by a high pitched kee wee! kee wee! A few seconds later the two kiwi monitors listening up on the ridge hear the female’s guttural call answering.

Every night, beyond Waimate North’s farmlands, a battle for survival is going on. The Waitangi River

catchment is home to seven percent of New Zealand’s North Island Brown Kiwi population. With threats from dogs, possums, feral cats, rats, hedgehogs, stoats and ferrets the kiwis rely on the Waimate North Landcare Group to survive. And until there are other tools in the pest eradication ‘toolbox’ that

means consistent, ongoing trapping. The costs are around $30,000 per year for the Landcare Group. Unbeknown to the kiwi their lives have just become much more precarious.

They live in an area owned by iwi trusts, farmers and country dwellers. The opportunities for gaining funding for long-term pest control on private land are becoming scarcer, even if it holds the nationally significant kiwi.

Trappers have to be employed to cover the large kiwi range and in order to meet previous funding criteria Landcare members have worked too, at $15 per hour to match the cost of the trappers. To date, $250,000 has been received from Northern Regional and Far North District Councils and the government’s Biodiversity Condition fund, WWF and the Lotteries Commission, but long-term funding has never been available.

Daryl believes pest eradication costs have to be spread throughout the wider local community. Tourism has the potential to offset some of these. But right now the Landcare Group is radically re-evaluating.

It’s considering having to pull back to a core area and recognises it may struggle to maintain that.

Come Riding with us on our quiet horsesthrough the regenerating native bush.

Geoff Wightman calling a local meeting. The initial group has expanded and has realised a sustained, gradual transformation — kiwi population increasing, other native bird populations thriving, forest regrowth, increased stocking rates on farmland, and ongoing local employment with a community united in its efforts. A key activity has been education, particularly with newcomers settling in the district.

“To know what they’ve got to lose, that’s the heart of it,” says Daryl. It is not only bird populations, he says, but also rare kauri snail and Puriri and Taraire stands on the district’s volcanic soil — a broadleaf forest unique in the world.

“Because local landowners have seen values in having native areas it has enabled this wildlife to continue here.” He adds, “Nationally, it might be time to ask ourselves — ‘do we want kiwi in the wild’? And if we lose them, what will we call ourselves?”

A better farm outlook emergesThe economic outlook this year for New Zealand farming is largely fine, but with just a few clouds on the horizon.

Many regions like Northland have enjoyed good rainfall through December and generally there has been substantial grass growth throughout the region. The beef boom is providing a huge economic bonus.

Despite the lowest milk payout forecast in six years, many dairy farmers have been able to capitalise on the current high beef prices by selling cull cows early, and beef stock that has been

raised on runoffs. The current trade conflict between Russia and America is quite interesting to follow. The American alliance keep telling us that their trade embargo against Russia is causing the Russian economy to decline.

But a recent article in the New Zealand Herald says that the Russians are looking forward to the 2015 year, despite the country’s economic and political difficulties The Russian president is

enjoying up to 87% support according to a recent poll. It may take some time for the two world economic superpowers to reconcile their differences.

Meanwhile, New Zealand farmers will face some challenging issues this year which will have an impact on their private property rights, and the way they conduct their farming business.

The government’s new legislation regarding water rights and the threat of agency bureaucrats using their power of right of entry onto farmers’ private property are just two of the issues of concern.

The recent action taken by WorkSafe New Zealand inspectors against a Marlborough farming couple, which resulted in them being fined $40,000 altogether between them in the Blenheim District Court for not wearing helmets while riding their quad bikes on their farm, raises some very serious issues in regard to the right of entry by government agencies onto a farmer’s property. Surveillance cameras were used in an ‘out to get them’ approach and that is abhorrent to right thinking people. When one looks at court fines that have been awarded in other cases, the award of $40,000 is extremely excessive and is out of kilter with how the rest of New Zealand society is treated.

It is ironic that there is now a call by some cyclists for the law regarding the wearing of cycle helmets to be reviewed, and it seems that if you have a sympathetic doctor a cyclist can obtain an exemption certificate which does not

require a helmet on the road. Farmers of New Zealand is of the view that the current policy of forcing farmers to wear helmets when driving quad bikes on their private farm properties is unworkable for many reasons.

Farmers of New Zealand does support the wearing of helmets for road use. But many of the helmets that are on the market today do not guarantee full protection.

It is our understanding that the majority of deaths on farms due to farm bike accidents are caused through injury to the body. According to reports by the Department of Labour the most common accident causing serious injury or death was a slow speed sideways roll on the side of a hill. There are thousands of bikes ridden on farms and by the urban community.

We believe that farm bike manufacturers, farmers and Government agencies need to come to a common position on how to safeguard riders of farm ATV bikes as a result of bike rollover, and get the law changed accordingly. While Farmers of New Zealand concedes that a four-post rollover frame is not the most practical way of dealing with this important issue, we strongly support the work that has been done by a Dargaville company in all-terrain vehicle rollover protection.

This is a flexible roll-over lifeguard protector. The manufacturing company claims their design has passed all required tests and the concept is a world first in ATV safety, providing good rider crush protection.

Coping with the sunshineRight across the country there’s more long lush grass than most cockies need.

Certainly at the moment, farms are looking a picture and farmers seem upbeat. Surprisingly, I have heard one or two farmers complain about the abundance of grass growth which is not a grumble I have noted before.

With plenty of grass the cows are doing well. Some good spells of January and February rain would help lengthen out the peak production season even more but if that doesn’t eventuate the extra silage and baleage will provide good back-up down the track. I would have thought there was limited room for complaint.

If there is anything to be wary about it will be having that lush grass go to waste once it’s been converted to milk and already in the vat.

Milk waste is a possibility for many farmers as at this time of year dairy refrigeration can really be put under the spotlight.

High milk production, high ambient weather temperature and high ground

In the shedwith Megan Fowlie

water temperatures all combine to have farm refrigeration systems working very hard. Sometimes under the strain something gives.

No one wants to forgo good grass and the efforts in the shed to have the tanker turn away empty so the key is to be prepared.

Fortunately, remedies for milk cooling can often be small adjustments

in the right place, installing the right size chiller unit for the milk volume or additional standing water.

Again, it’s a case of making hay while the sun shines so while everything else is ticking along, it would pay to check out the dairy refrigeration system while it’s working hard, anticipate the issues and get the work done in a timely fashion.

Wear a helmet.A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Safety at sea is a package dealCoastguard volunteers around the Northland coast have seen an increasing number of craft putting to sea as the weather has improved, and with it an increase in incidents.

Operations manager for Coastguard Northern Region, Ray Burge, says those incidents have remained relatively minor, in the context of the recent drowning fatalities at the Manukau bar.

“Some of these can be put down to just bad luck at the time,” he said.

“However, many are preventable events, such as battery or fuel problems which indicate a lack of preparation and maintenance before setting out on the boat.

“But we have been pleased to see an increase in communications with skippers reporting in on the radio with details of time planned, destination and passengers on board and so on.

“What we are really looking for is skipper responsibility. As much as communications gear and life jackets, it is important that someone on board,

the skipper, is responsible for safety. It is not just one thing — it is a package of responsibility, including avoiding alcohol, and ensuring everyone is safely back on shore

Meanwhile, as a volunteer organisation, funding is critical to Coastguards continuing operations and they seek support with the chance of a big payback through their summer lottery.

Ticket holders stand to win one of 20 stand-out prizes including first prize of a Toyota Highlander GXL and Haines Hunter SF485 cruiser. There are three more boats to win plus a luxury holiday, a huge 70" Sony TV and local Coastguard units are selling tickets. Each ticket they sell raises $7 for the area concerned.

“Buying a coastguard lottery ticket is a great way to have a bit of fun, be

in with a brilliant chance of winning a sensational prize, and support the lifesaving work of New Zealand’s search and rescue volunteers,” said North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard president Walter Smith.

The lottery is authorised to raise funds to enhance the operational

standards of 70 dedicated Volunteer Coastguard Search and Rescue units by providing search and rescue equipment and training.

It closes on February 12 and is drawn by lot at the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre in Auckland — the results published on February 22.

A new generation releasedby Andy Bryenton

Mitsubishi Motors have been building light utility vehicles for over 30 years, catering to the vast rural and trades people’s market both here and around the world.

Which means that when they set out to replace a popular existing model of ute, they do so with the big picture in mind. What works in the Waikato, for example, has to work in Manila and Rangoon, and possibly even northern Wales as well.

Which is why the upgrades — beyond the purely cosmetic — to the next generation Triton ute are so well rounded. The main thrust of development however, has been to bring the new Mitsubishi — released recently at a large motor expo event in Thailand — up to date with the biggest trend in light commercials. Sedan-like handling and ride comfort have been aimed for, here as in the top-tier utes on the market, the venerable Hilux and the currently super-hot Ford Ranger.

Which is not to say that the outgoing Triton was an iron-hard agricultural implement when it came to ride and handling. Far from it. But now, with this next-gen model, noise has been reduced, the suspension system reworked, and the steering made more car-like, leaning toward that ideal of a workhorse for the weekdays which can still take the family out shopping.

Under the hood the engine gets a complete overhaul as well. An all new

aluminium block 2.4 litre MIVEC turbo diesel does the honours, with a claim of 20 per cent more fuel efficiency and hefty torque output of 430Nm. In Thailand, the Triton is offered with both a six-speed manual and a five-speed auto box, and these sound likely to go global, arriving here as options when the Triton lands on Kiwi shores.

The four th generation Triton was famous for another factor too — good value for money. While other utes topped the sixty thousand dollar mark, a nicely spec’d model would come in at just a whisper over half that.

And while the price in Thai currency helps us just a little in discerning how much the fifth gen Triton may cost in New Zealand, if it’s in that ballpark then buyers will be getting a lot of ute for their dollar.

Series five rolls out — the Thai release of the new Triton showcased improved versatility for the popular ute

Less bark, more bite from farmers’ best friend

by Andy Bryenton

In the years after the liberation of Korea, following the disastrous ruin of World War Two, the farming and agricultural infrastructure of the East Asian nation needed to be rebuilt quickly and efficiently.

As in the aftermath of the same war in Europe, one of the first industries re-started was the manufacture of tractors, offering a way to feed a hungry populous.

By 1947, the first tractors were rolling off the production lines of the newly founded Daedong agricultural machinery company. Half a century later they have not stopped, and their products are a common sight in the rural hinterland of Korea.

It’s an understatement to say that Korea is a manufacturing powerhouse in modern times — this is the homeland of both Hyundai and Kia, as well as electronics’ giant Samsung.

As people everywhere embrace the build quality of Korean products, it’s timely to consider the Kioti range of tractors, built by the Daedong factory for export.

Straight out of the blocks, it’s easy to see that Kioti have aimed for a burgeoning niche in the market, tailoring

army knife rather than the machete. A perfect second tractor, perhaps, for silage

and bale handling, or fitted with a front loader for shovelling

metal, feed or manure. By narrowing their focus, Kioti have also achieved that other holy grail — good value for money.

The orange machines come fitted with big-brand features (including usb audio in the cab), as well as Perkins diesel engines, a big name used by other big badges in the tractor trade.

The PX1002, for example, comes with a very smooth new transmission system, 100 nicely tamed horses under the hood, a three-speed PTO and the ability to fit Kioti’s own branded front end loader, so even more work can be wrung from this willing little machine.

As tractors seem to get bigger, more complex and more computerised year by year, it’s good to see this Korean company hold the line for a moderately powered, capable, multi-role tractor which comes at a very reasonable price.

And while the Kioti range may not have all the electronic toys of the great battleships of the pastureland from the United States and Germany, it does do the one thing Kiwi farmers demand. It works hard, and looks built to keep doing so for years to come.

A win-win situationA D V E RT O R I A L

There is a good reason that Grandpa’s feeders come up tops on all user forums.

“Grandpa’s have been around long enough to look at all of the issues with feeding chooks, and through many years of listening to customer feedback and trialling they have come up with a feeder that ticks all of the boxes,” says Alla Kirkham

“With the holiday season upon us and people heading away, the issue

arises of ‘who’s going to feed the girls?’ Grandpa’s feeders have the most trusted and reliable feeder on the market. You can go away and rest assured that your chooks are safely being fed, while keeping out sparrows and rodents. More and more people are purchasing

a Grandpa’s feeder as a present for family, friends or neighbours, especially those who are responsible for feeding the chooks when they’re away. In this case it bene ts both the giver and the receiver.

“The Grandpa’s team recently received some feedback from a customer who said that her food bill was reduced

by two thirds and the feeder paid for itself in three months by what she had saved. Admittedly this is an extreme case — she must have had a lot of well-fed sparrows.

Generally speaking a Grandpa’s feeder can save anywhere between 15 and 50% on your food bill due to there being absolutely no waste. The food stays clean and dry and with the grill in the food trough, the chooks can’t ick or scratch any food out.

‘The chooks are happier when they have food on demand which in turn increases egg production so it is a win-win situation’.

Wool market cautiously optimisticWool prices have eased over the past few weeks although supply has been restrained due to weather interruptions in southern areas, plus an apparent hesitancy by growers in many other areas to begin shearing.

However the hesitancy may simply be that growers have other more important jobs to attend to at present with such a variety of weather issues facing them.

Dry conditions in areas of the South Island have in some cases dictated an early weaning and ewe shearing, while prolonged wet conditions in other areas have caused anxiousness amongst those farmers keen to get tractor work completed and paddocks sown plus hay and sileage crops harvested.

Wool flow predictions for the remainder of December and throughout January could face further interruption, if some of the long range weather forecast experts are proved correct allowing perhaps some cautious optimism for prices to maintain similar levels to now, on a type for type basis, if supply is restricted. There is one thing for sure, which is that the sheep population is still in decline due to the intervention of alternative farming practices, and continued options created by water introduction, land subdivision and suchlike.

Recent wool auctions have seen an easing in market prices compared to earlier, although general interest has remained solid. As post lamb shorn crossbred fleece began to come forward for sale a decrease in wool quality became apparent, despite visual wool colour remaining relatively good, showing evidence of tenderness and cotting.

Hogget wools dominated the November and early December crossbred wool auctions with most being of good quality, displaying good washing colour, and length of staple generally

in the 75 to 125mm ranges. Interest in crossbred hogget wools was very good with Chinese processor representation dominant from the buyers’ bench.

For buyers searching for mid-micron wool types (Halfbred and Corriedale wool), supply was fairly limited during the November period, however, those offered were well sought after by the trade and, although also easing in price slightly, were mostly sold under the auctioneer’s hammer.

Good useful selections of merino wool types were offered during November at the Christchurch auctions with most interest shown towards well grown, well skirted, broadly classed (i.e. not over-classed), good sized lines, of generally adult wools measuring from approximately 18 to 21 microns and of good tensile strength. A few wether clips offered in the aforementioned micron ranges drew good interest from buyers looking for robust wools displaying very good tensile strength.

A large number of merino hogget wools offered were generally in the extra-fine categories measuring from 14 to 17 microns. These types were difficult to sell due to their mostly low tensile strength measurements, plus the market here continued to follow general price trends for similar micron wools offered for sale in other competing countries, such as Australia and South Africa.

The 2014 year seems to have whizzed by quicker than any year before it and the change in land use in many areas also seems to have been phenomenally quick. Subdivision of land and urban spread I have noticed and have often asked ‘where are the people coming from?’.

Dig in to serious projects

by Andy Bryenton

As farming becomes more intensive, the work load becomes more varied, with innumerable small tasks requiring attention.

And while some farmers are pleased to hand off such tasks to professional contractors, there are others who can justify a more hands on approach. After all, it doesn’t take long for a small digger to pay for itself, so long as you and your staff have the skills to use it wisely.

All of which makes the Kubota U series of small excavators all the more attractive. Because unlike their bigger, brawnier brothers, the U series are defined by ease of use. A combination of clever design and simplified controls means that the U series is ideal for the non-fulltime user, with a learning curve that’s gentle and a very forgiving layout.

Manoeuvring into tight spaces, for example, is the forte of the U25-3, a compact and powerful 2.5 ton excavator which is perfect for all those little jobs around the farm. The ‘tail’ of this digging machine fits into the radius of its tracks, meaning that it can go places where a bulkier machine simply can’t. And while it’s there, the U25-3’s powerful bucket can dig trenches, prepare foundations,

scoop materials, or even be fitted out with a hydraulic auger for fencing or piling duties.

Every care has been taken to make the U series stable, even when pushing their digging power and reach to the extreme — over 2.8 metres down, and over 4.6 metres from the wide-tracked base. The unit’s smooth-running Kubota 20 horsepower diesel sits low in its cradle, giving operators confidence to extend their working space, even in muddy conditions.

Farming chores often call for more muscle than even the toughest worker can muster. One of Kubota’s nimble and versatile small diggers in the shed could be just the answer for farms in that niche where large scale creates its own economies.

Then again, with a variety of chores to take care of, the shed may be just the place which the U25-3 spends the least amount of time.

Utilising your staffIn last month’s article I mentioned that according to Dairy NZ the average cost per lame cow is around $500, including lost production and treatment costs, and that on average 35% of your herd will be lame in a season.

That means that for every 100 lame cows, you could be losing around $50,000 from lower production and treatment costs.

So with dairy farmers needing to look very carefully at every dollar of expenditure right now, what is the best way to control your hoof trimming costs? And even if your staff has some spare time on their hands, is spending a couple of hours a day trimming hooves really the most profitable use of their time?

Let’s take a look at some figures. If for example you had 100 lame cows

and it takes your staff about one hour to trim five cows, then it would take them 20 hours to trim those cows. And if you were paying them $15 an hour then it would cost you about $300 to trim those cows.

The other option is to get a professional trimmer in. They may charge you $15 per cow so the cost to treat these cows would now be $1,500.

In other words by doing it yourself you could save $1,200, always assuming

Resting cows have less stress and less lameness

your staff member is highly trained and does a similar quality job as a professional trimmer.

However — the professional completed the job in five hours and has therefore just freed up your staff for around 15 hours to do other things.

So what could your staff do with that 20 hours that could be more profitable for you?

For a start they would need to concentrate on activities that reduce lameness. So, what should those activities be? One major cause of lameness is the lack of resting time.

It’s well known that a lack of resting time leads to stress which means more lameness, along with other problems.

So what can your staff do to ensure your cows get more rest by spending more time in the paddock?

And remember that every case of lameness you can remove could save

you around $500. In other words, if you make a few changes in your farm management and use the same staff member to implement those changes, you might reduce the number of lame cows in our example by up to 50% — saving yourself $25,000. Another thing you could do is to have smaller herds. But, I hear you say, smaller herds means more herds which require more staff time.

Remember however, that you now have more labour hours available if your staff member is not trimming cows anymore.

So to summarise — it’s well worthwhile considering these options in your management plan because of the huge potential returns that they bring.

I would be happy for you to email me at [email protected] if you would like to discuss your situation with me or call on 0800 833 463.

Sulphur can be added as the most concentrated of all fertilisers, elemental sulphur (90 to 98% S). In most other fertilisers, sulphur is present in the sulphate form, the main form that is taken up by plants.

Elemental sulphur can be mined from natural volcanic areas or is produced during refining of petroleum products. Natural sulphate deposits are also common with calcium sulphate (gypsum), potassium sulphate, magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts and kieserite), and potassium magnesium sulphates (e.g. langbeinite) being available.

A major form of synthetic fertiliser sulphur is in superphosphate in which sulphuric acid has been used to digest phosphate rock and synthetic potassium sulphate and ammonium sulphate is also common.

Sulphur is required for the formation of key amino acids, cysteine and methionine, and thus is a component of many proteins. The role of sulphur in plants also extends into the structure and function of cell membranes with sulpholipids and crucial antioxidant activity.

High levels of sulphur compounds are found in the membranes and fluid around the sites of photosynthesis

where oxidative stress can be high. Sulphur is also required for the synthesis of chlorophyll and is a key component of the protein ferredoxin required for photosynthesis.

Not surprisingly a symptom of sulphur deficiency in plants is often yellowing of the leaves (light green initially). Since sulphur is not easily mobilised from older leaves to young shoots, sulphur deficiency shows more in the younger leaves (although if nitrogen status is low, sulphur deficiency can be seen in older leaves). In brassicas, sulphur deficiency can be seen as reddening of the undersides of leaves and inward leaf cupping, followed by a general reddening of the leaves.

In pasture, it is typically the legume component that is most limited by a shortage of sulphur. Grasses tend to be more efficient at nutrient uptake from the soil so are less likely to be affected by deficiency.

Brassica crops can have a high requirement because much sulphur is directed into secondary compounds such as glucosinolates which act as insect deterrents and generally improve plant stress tolerance.

When crop residues or stubble are burnt, the non-mineral nutrients such

as carbon and nitrogen can be largely lost to the atmosphere. Unlike most minerals, sulphur is also lost to the atmosphere in burning.

Sulfur dioxide gas is a by-product of coal burning and until recent years, air pollution caused by unmitigated sulfur dioxide emissions from power plants etc was sufficient to provide much of the requirement for sulphur nutrition in many Northern Hemisphere areas.

Plants could take up their sulphur requirements partly through direct uptake of sulphur dioxide from the air and from the deposition of sulphur from acid rain (sulphuric acid from the reaction of SO2 and water).

Elemental sulphur needs to be oxidised to plant available sulphate in the soil through the action of specific bacteria. That fact combined with chunky particle size may mean that sulphur release is delayed.

Some delayed release can indeed be helpful if the soil is prone to leaching as the sulphate form is mobile in soil water. Loss of sulphate is mostly seen as a nutrient budget and expense problem as it is not considered to have a significant impact on water quality (unlike nitrogen and phosphorus).

The oxidation of elemental sulphur drops soil pH. Growers can make use of this in high pH over-limed soils or to drop the pH to meet the requirements of acid-loving plants. One hundred kg/ha of element sulphur drops the pH roughly as much as 300kg/ha of lime would lift

Mineral nutrition of plants: sulphurby Dr Tim Jenkins

Soil sulphur can be in organic or inorganic form. Organic makes up 90% to 95% of total sulphur in most New Zealand soils.

the pH. Ammonium sulphate also tends to drop soil pH.

Gypsum is a combination of calcium and sulphate and tends to be pH neutral. Sulphur is released steadily over time from gypsum so it is suitable as a sulphur source and is organically allowable. The potassium and magnesium salts of sulphate are also readily available and organically allowable if naturally mined.

A burgeoning global mohair price and new genetics has seen the Angora goat stage a solid revival on Dave Brown’s Waipu property.

World prices for mohair have risen steadily for some time due to a shortage of this rare and valuable natural bre.

This world shortage is caused by a variety of factors in other countries such as climate and land-use change, politics, predators and labour costs, creating a ‘perfect storm’ of long-term shortage of supply set against steady strong demand for mohair’s many and varied end uses in the textile industry.

Current prices for NZ Mohair range from $40 per kilo for the top kid mohair, down to $15 per kilo for ne adult mohair. Recent kid mohair sales in Australia have been as high as $50 per kilo for specialist markets, initiating a new wave of interest in these unique high performance animals over there. New genetics imported to Waipu from South Africa and Texas via Australia in the form of two mature ‘Modern Style’ 100kg liveweight bucks cutting over 8kg

each of medium/ ne mohair per year, and two younger bucks, is enabling the Waipu ock to grow both more and better quality mohair.

A detailed management system, using better feeding, recording, eece testing and selection, along with the new genetics is setting Dave’s ock on a rapidly improving path with numbers expected to reach over 500 in the next twelve months. “Careful growth of goat numbers, with a watchful eye on eece

quality and an awareness of the need to feed and manage them correctly will repay existing and new entrants well,” Dave commented.

To showcase these new genetics and their progeny, and to discuss management techniques and future expansion of the mohair industry, a Fielday will be held in ‘The Goatshed’ on farm at 566 Cove Road (5.6km from the Pizza Barn) Waipu, 10.30am on January 17. A dog’s tail …

We’re ona roads agin“Yah gotta wunder eh Dog.”Well, heck readas, hear we go again

for twenny hundred an’ fifteen. Tha big New Yeer and Boss is getting ona hobby horse again, least that’s wot his gerlfren’ Sharlene calls it. Ya see we wen’ down ta Horks Bay fer a holiday, so Boss an’ Sharlene cood show off there dorter Sophy ter some cuzzins. An’ corse Boss wanted to go an catch sum crayfishes with one cuzzin wot lives ata beach. But gettin’ back ter his hobby horse.

On tha way, Boss was reelly getting upsit with sum other drivers.

“Yah see Dog,” he sed wile we were looking at all tha grass wot was growin’ wile we was away. (Boss reckons we gonna do pretty good ona dairy block this seesin because we got so much feed, an silage, and hey, that we shud have a long milk and lota produckshin. So if we gotta lowa payout, we gonna have more milk. Bit comlikated fer me, but Boss an’ Sharlene pretty pleased atta prospek.) Sorry. Boss agin.

“That blimmin booze limit ona road, ana speedin’ crackdown by a cops is orl well an’ good,” he sed.

But lookit alla crashis. How meny of them crashes was becos sum tourists lost the plot?”

I give Boss tha ‘look’ witch meens I havint got a clue wot he meens.

“Okay Dog, wot I meen is that tha tourist get offa plane a few hours afta they drove ta the earport ona wrong site ofa road in China, or ‘Merica or sum other country, an’ then they go driving ona Kiwi roads witch is ona right side ofa road, witch is on the left.”

Heck! Right left, wotever Boss. Evin I’m confused, so wotabout tha tourists.

“Persakkerly Dog. Yah can’t ‘spect them ta suddenly drive ona road ona side they not used too. An then we got diffrint road rools for some of them. I reckin tourists gotta hava drivin’ test an’ git a lockil licence before they allowed ta drive, We got windy roads, Steep roads. Old gravil roads, motorways an’ bluddy goat tracks, an’ single lane one way bridgis.

An’ the powersthatbe jus’ let unsuspecting tourists drive aroun’ like they was on good safe roads back at home. Gawd gimme strength Dog.”

Well, eye gotta say, this Eye Dog woodin’t like it iffa Boss give me a ‘right hand’ wissil, wen he ment a ‘leff hand’ wissil, ana ‘stop’ wen he mint ‘go” eh? Or a ‘speek up’ wen’ he mint ‘give ‘em the eye’ Or ‘git ina front’, sted of ‘get in bluddy behind dog’.

If I wen’ leff wen I shooda gone right, we’d wind up wiv sheep all up tha booeye, eh?

“Yep Dog, we’d be up tha khyber shootin’ pukekos wiv a long handled shovel, eh”? seda Boss.

Gawd but tha Boss can get konfusing!“Seriously tho Dog, an’ you deah,”

he sed, as we sat down fer smoko wiv Sharlene, “Chuckin’ millions of dollas at breath-testin’ an people doin’ a cuppla miles ova tha limit, is just swatting flies wiv a cucumber.”

There he goes agin. Makes a good point, then loses me. Roll ona good New Yeer. An’ safer roads. Eh?

CheersBilly
