2 General engineering and design guidelines
This specification defines products and automation concepts which are state of the art and ensure the availability worldwide. The availability of products includes offering additional services to Volvo. The named contact persons are to be contacted as soon as possible during the start up phase of the project, to determine the quantity of components to be used and together secure delivery times setup in the project. Documentation of products and software is in English language available, also in other languages. If any conflicts occur, then specific and direct discussions must take place with Volvo/Pneumatic supplier and written permission for any deviations must be obtained.
2. 1 Valve terminals
Valve terminals (VT) must be used for piloting pneumatic actuated cylinders, clamps or other devices. The specified type of VT is the Festo MPA-2, MPA-F with CPX electrical I/O devices. When the flow is larger than one valve can supply, use two valves on the valve terminal as first choice, second choice pilot valve near the cylinder. Type 50 valve terminal, with CPX MPA-2 and MPA-F (high flow), picture:

Installation guideline: Consideration to Volvos demands of cycle times and availability, when configuring valve terminals must be taken. The VT must be installed as near as possible to the pneumatic actuators to prevent long tubes and to optimize installation costs as well as short cycle times. Connection definitions:
Electrical connection type: M12 Pneumatic connection: min. 6 mm (QS-6) depends on application
VT design: VT’s must be defined that 10% of the maximum numbers of I/ O and one blanking plate for a valve are free during first installation and SOP. Recommend standard configuration for VT in fixtures: No. of electrical input modules: 6 (max.10) No. of pilot valves: 8 x 5/2 bistable (max.16) Controller / field bus: 1

2. 2 Service units
Service units for compressed air preparation must be Volvos specific Festo-MS family in the size of ¾” and 2”. Pneumatic systems shall always be equipped with:
• air treatment unit including filter • regulator • pressure gauge • shut-off valve • air evacuation • gradual aeration
In order to the planned compressed air system additional devices for a cost effective and a reliable operation must be added. I.e. air flow measure sensors or pressure switches for control the compressed air system. (Compressed air management) In small lines or in cells where the small size permits a complete overview and makes it unnecessary to divide the emergency stop zone into many safety zones, it is possible to use a rather simple compressed air circuit Part number: MS6 - ¾” – SE_SY.100409 (see page 24)

In large lines, the line shall be divided up into several safety zones, to minimize standstills and the risk for bodily injuries. This solution shall be used when it is not possible to get a full general view of the whole emergency stop zone. Part number: MS12 - 2” – SE_SY.100533 (see page 25)
