Exhibits - Flying High with the Birds
I want to start by saying a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers that helped
with the Theaters exhibit. From sewing, to artifact help, to helping with the
opening, your help makes the exhibit even better! Thank you! December finds
the exhibits department looking into the next year. It’s fun to be able to look
ahead at all the fun history we will be able to bring to the community. Ideas for
a medical, a South Sioux Falls, and a toy exhibit are being tossed around. It
should be a fun year! First, we need to finish 2017. The hallway exhibit
“EGGS-traordinary Birds” will be flying away, but we will be keeping the eggs.
All kinds of breakfast kitchen artifacts will take its place. “Sunny Side Up” will
be installed mid-December. Be sure to eat breakfast before you check it out
or you will leave hungry. As always we can use help in our department with
many different projects, from exhibit binders to shop projects. Come in and
chat with us whenever you are in the building, our door is always open!
Education - Movies and Murder coming in January
The Education Department is looking past the holiday season and is al-
ready planning programs for January and February! The Museum is excited
to host Movie Night at the Museum in the restored courtroom of the Old
Courthouse Museum again this winter. A movie will be offered in conjunc-
tion with Downtown’s First Friday events on January 5 and February 2. Visi-
tors are invited to bring a blanket or pillow (or grab one of our chairs) and
settle in for an evening of entertainment. Admission is FREE, and popcorn
and drinks will be available for sale. We are looking for volunteers to help
with sale of refreshments.
There will be murder at the Pettigrew again this year! Paavo is working on
a new original script for the Murder Mystery. As in past years, participants
will tour the crime scene to view evidence and meet with suspects, then will
put their wits together to determine who is responsible for the crime. We are
looking for volunteers to act as “deputy detectives” to lead groups through
the home. Volunteers will be responsible for introducing characters, leading
questioning, and making sure there is no touching of artifacts in the
home. This year’s murder mystery will take place on January 19 & 20, and
January 26 & 27.
If you would like more information or are interested in helping with either of
these events, please call Kevin at 978-7007.

Collections Department - Holiday Decor
November in the Collections Department usually means decorating at the
Pettigrew Home, and last month was no exception. Staff members and volun-
teers spent a good portion of the Tuesday after Thanksgiving putting out the
Christmas tree and other festive ornamentation in the historic home. Besides
helping to put together the artificial tree, volunteers assisted with creating silk
flower arrangements, setting the dining room table and placing evergreen rop-
ing both inside and out. This month, some of our volunteers will also be in-
volved with staffing the home during the museum’s Holiday Open House on
December 14th from 5 to 8 p.m.
Once the holidays are past, the Department could use volunteer help to take
down the various decorations. Current plans are to begin undecorating on
Monday, January 8th,
2018, at 9:30 a.m. If
you are interested in
assisting with this
task, please contact
Jessie at the muse-
um, 367-4210.
Museum Store
Getting into holiday shopping and looking for some
unique gifts? Check out the Museum Store at the Old Courthouse Museum for everyone on your list. There are puzzles, books by local authors about the area, tea, lotions, and South Dakota-made products. Come take a look around and maybe buy a treat for yourself. Remember to mention you are a volunteer to get a 15% discount in the store, too.
