“For Man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For
nature, it’s a time of sowing of scattering abroad”
Edwin Way Teale
» As the quote above indicates, autumn has a different purpose for all, it’s a time when
we gather the fruits of the summer, when we gather together at school and work after long
vacations or simply huddle together at home to stay warmer and prepare for the long
winter days ahead. In either case for us it is a time of preparation of gathering the
means we will need to endure winter. For nature on the other hand it’s a time of giving,
giving us the resources we need for long winter, it
delivers sustenance at harvest time, it offers us a
beautiful colourful foliage that provides a warm memory
during those dark colourless days. It gradually eases us
into the colder temperatures.
And so during this season, which we often look upon
with disappointment because we know the implications of
what comes next, a time when our faces get a downcast look because we are cold, wet and
gloomy, I ask you to be kind to one another . As expats it is more difficult to endure
times like these, so I suggest you gather together with your fellow international friends
and have a game night, a movie night or a small dinner together. This is the time when
people need people, and we all could use a smile on those cold and rainy mornings. Think
of the marriage between man and nature, the giving and gathering that takes place during
this season and try to realize that at this time nature is not taking away but giving you
all its best so that you have sustenance. With that thought in mind let us give our best
this fall, let us be kind and generous with our colourful and warm smiles.
As my favourite poet would have said:
“No Spring nor Summer beauty hath such grace, as I have seen in one autumnal face”
John Donne
Happy Reading and a colourful Fall!

Meet The Volunteers
Andreea Ene
Hallo everyone and happy reading! My name is Andreea Ene, 30 years old, born in Bucharest, Romania. In September I celebrated 2 important things: 1 year since I first came in Holland and also the fact that you nominated me” volunteer of the month”. I finished my studies (University of Psychology) in 2005. That was when I met my husband and I started to travel with him. Due to his profession we had to move very often, every 6 months-1 year. I can’t say that was easy, I had to find my place everywhere, a job, a nice apartment, and I had to make some friends too. Making friends was the easy part, I met amazing people everywhere and I learned a lot about cultural differences. I think of it as an adventure, but now I want to settle down for a while. My daughter, who is 3 years old, really enjoys living in The Hague and the most important thing...she feels that this is her home now. I heard so many languages during my last 7 years, but I choose to learn Dutch and I actually find it easy to learn. It has been one year in Holland, and I want to say thank you to someone who made my living here enjoyable and easier than in other parts of the world. Someone who told me in December 2011, on a very Dutch rainy day: “You are welcome at ACCESS!” That someone is Mr Robert Udilwa, who is a volunteer at the Atrium team. What I learned about volunteering (among other professional things) is that we should know how to say “thank you” to our colleagues.

A SUCCESSFUL DAY OF CONNECTING WITH THE INTERNATIONALS IN THE HAGUE
On the morning of Sunday, the 16th September 2012, the Atrium in the City Hall, The Hague, was packed with colourful business banners and promotional materials, and more than a hundred of enthusiastic and excited people were busy setting up tables and decorating them with the goods and brochures to display their business and products. The anural ‘Feel at home’ International Community Fair 2012 was underway. This year, the Fair was co-organized by TheHagueOnLine and ACCESS, both organisations have been working together for months prior to the date to make the event another fruitful and enjoyable day for the international communities working and living in Holland, especially in The Hague region. Among all the participants and visitors, there were some people wrapped in bright orange shawls running around to help and direct those non-profit organisations to their designated areas and tables, helping with any queries the participants may have. Everyone in the Atrium wondered who these people were. Only after inspections of the logo on the orange shawls and the badges they were wearing, they realized that these were the volunteers from ACCESS, just like they have been doing week in, week out, at our Helpdesks and behind the computers in Zeestraat office, in the THIC office in the City Hall, to help people with the information needed and the humble but honourable gesture of just being there to make other people’s lives easier and more enjoyable. With the same spirits the efforts of these volunteers on the day have made the Fair another successful event for the international community living in The Hague, but also for ACCESS as an organisation, more people learnt about us, more people benefited from the services we provided. On the day alone, our volunteers who were working at the THIC office received more than sixty visitors, answered queries regarding childcare, career development, education and legal matters. We also made new contacts with some businesses, promoted our ACCESS courses and workshops, generated more interests for volunteering with ACCESS. Thank you, Hafizh, the Project Manager, for doubling the number of non-profit organisations who participated in this year’s Fair, without your energy and charisma this would not have been possible. Thank you, Deborah, for being part of the master-mind behind this Fair, and also for being the leader of ACCESS to direct volunteers working with focus and optimism towards the same goal. Last but not least, thank you to all the volunteers on the day – Alda, Christina, Emma, Jane, Lola, Monica, Queenie, Rohini, Roy, Matt, Christine, Megha, Jessie, Mary Jane, Dorota, Mark, Teresa, Megan and Amina for helping out and making the day more lively and fun. Also thanks to Alia who helped Hafizh in the earlier stage for making all the contacts with the potential participants of non-profit organisations. /Qin/
