One Man’s Take on Modesty

The topic of modesty tends to make people shudder as they imagine a return to

Puritanical ideals. Why? Because fashion is one of the great mainstays of personal

freedom: we think people must be backward if they tell us how to dress.

Addressing the subject of modesty, my primary concern is not the world of fashion. Lisa

Armstrong, Fashion Editor of The Sunday Times, says, “Modesty has been creeping back

into vogue for some time.” That may be, but regardless of what we think is in vogue, my

primary concern is not about what sells, but why it sells.

Puritan preacher Richard Baxter once told women in his congregation: “And you must

not lay a stumbling block in [men's] way, not blow up the fire of their lust, nor make

your ornaments snares but you must walk among sinful persons as you would do with a candle among straw or gun-

powder, or else you may see the flame which you would not foresee, when it is too late to quench it.”

Baxter puts his finger on a topic that is near and dear to me: personal sexual purity. In a word, Baxter is advocating

modesty, not just of dress, but of actions and attitudes. Baxter puts his finger on one of the primary motives for

modesty: concern not to light the fires of lust in men.

Should we heed Baxter’s advice? I believe we should, but for Christians modesty should not be motivated by what preach-

ers have said but what God thinks. Does the infinite, eternal God, with all of his concern for global affairs and natural dis-

asters, really care about what a woman wears?

While the mixture of dirt and slush cur-rently blanketing our state transforms every-thing in sight to an ugly gray, the ugliest gray of all is the blurring between right and wrong. The other day I was walking into work through a parking lot that was covered in muck. I, and every-one else who parked there, knew the layout of the parking lot well enough we didn’t need to be able to see the lines beneath the sludge to know where we could and could not park, but car after car whipped in at the last minute past me (walking from the back)

to “made up” spots near the front.

Who would get them in trouble, even if the lines were visible? Probably no one, but everyone would see their car parked where there were no lines in the summer, and that embarrassment keeps them from their improper park-ing. However, if the lines are hidden, even though everyone knows where they are, all is fair. As winter pro-gresses, it just gets worse and worse, the memory of those parking lines fad-ing as the dreary cold months drag

from beneath the soil’s grip is hardly measurable, but it is already striving to reach the sun’s life-giving rays. Soon, it stands a foot tall. Then, sev-eral. Eventually, it stands tall, a mighty tree whose roots run deep and branches reach high above all possible obstructions between their leaves and the sun. However, in con-trast to its total distance from the sun, it has hardly made a move! It’s hardly closer at all! What has changed, however, is its separation from the earth and its ability to with-stand the earth’s distractions.

Growth is worth striving for.

As this occurs in your life, God will amplify the small things you do in honor of Him as a resounding difference between you and those who do not yet know Him. He will use your dedication to open their hearts and minds to why it is you live differently than they do. 1Peter 3:15 reads, in part, “...[be] ready always to [give] an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:” Has anyone asked you lately?! If not, grow loud enough in your lifestyle that people notice that YOU have a hope that THEY cannot understand!

along.

Is this not human nature? The child that sneaks a cookie when he thinks no one is looking; the ath-lete that intentionally breaks a rule when he’s got a good excuse, the student that takes a shortcut on her homework because “everyone else”

is.

It is into this mess that the modern Apostolic steps and has the greatest opportunity yet. The world, void of conscience beyond social norms, steps in unison to the dance of their own desires and whims. However, the Apostolic anomalies among them are not in step, they are not in sync; they are party-crashers,

rhythm-ruiners, they do not belong!

Psalm 119:105 says “Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Others, in dark-ness, do not know how to walk ac-cording to God’s awesome grace and plan. When YOU get HIS Word into your life, suddenly, your path is lit! Your course of action is clear! De-spite all of the sludge and snow and gray, the parking-lot-lines of life stand out and become a guide to drive our lives by. This may make you drive totally different paths, this may cause you to walk in an entirely different way, and, as you grow in the knowl-edge and wisdom of Jesus Christ, the separation will only become more

and more distinct.

PARENT CONNECTION

SIX FLAWS THAT CAN ROB YOU OF A BLESSED HOME Dr. Keith Sherlin

Biblical Teaching

In the Mosaic Law code God divided his law in positive laws (what one will do if

righteous) and negative laws (what one will not do if righteous). In the last portion of

Proverbs chapter three we find some negatives that point us towards what is consid-

ered unrighteous attitudes and acts. Our goal as leaders in the family, in the spiritual

family, or in the community is to secure God’s blessing for others. Our goal is to edify

people through love. That’s the example that Jesus demonstrated in laying down His life out of love for us. In that ef-

fort we must understand that love has two sides to it. Grace and mercy is one side of love and justice and discipline is

the other side of love. The first half of chapter three points us towards the positives and the last half points us to the

negatives and collectively both, if followed, can place us in a position where God will bless us. But positioning our-

selves in sinful actions can bring about curses and God’s hand of justice. In Proverbs 3:33:-35 we find this statement:

“The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous. Towards the scorners he is scornful,

but to the humble he gives favor. The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace.”

Six Behaviors to Avoid

What are six negatives that we as saints must avoid if we want to receive the Lord’s blessing on our homes?

First, as a parent it is crucial to avoid living in fear. If a parent lives in fear this teaches the people in the home that God

truly is not in control and that what we confess about him is really not what we truly believe (3:25-26). Second, we

cannot display a greedy, self-centered, life whereby we avoid paying what either is due or what we sense we ought to

give (3:27). When we mishandle our finances we show those around us that we are poor stewards of God’s grace and we deny the essence of the gospel, which is give in order to bless another. Third, we must avoid postponing benevo-

lence. If we know we have the means to help someone with a legitimate need and yet we send them away because we

need to think about it more, or because we want to see if they are serious about the need and if they will come back

or not we have withheld God’s grace from someone that God has placed before us by his providence (3:28). Our

minds ought to be already pre-determined that we will do whatever we can to truly love our neighbor. Failing to do

this perpetuates self-centeredness in the lives of those around us. Fourth, we must avoid allowing our minds to plan

ways to injure others (3:29). Sin will lead us to plan all kinds of ways where can hurt another person. Sometimes we

will say hurtful things, or we might ignore a need they have, or we might even plan to do something actively aggressive

towards the other person. We must be aware that sin creeps into our thought processes and we must avoid this atti-

tude and action. Fifth, we must avoid being contentious people (3:30). Have you ever met a person who simply loves

to argue for the sake arguing? This is sinful. We must do all we can to be a peaceful and graceful person so that those

around us can see the grace of the Lord in us. And sixth, we must not honor, praise, or envy those who are violent.

Many today want to use violence to achieve their goals, and even some religions believe violence is the way to bring

about good. The Bible forbids us from setting these types of people up as role models (3:31-32).

Practical Application for the Family

As a parent you have key moments where you shape the future of your child for the rest of his or her life. Sim-

ple deeds of grace and love can do more for training your child for righteousness than you can ever imagine. Yet, the

reverse is true as well. Simple deeds of sin and corruption can bring justice and discipline not only to your home today

but to succeeding generations to come. As a parent pray about ways you can avoid these common pitfalls above. Ex-

amine your ways. Do you worry and show a lack of faith in God’s ability to provide? Do you pay your bills on time and

do you give aid to others when you know there is a true need? Do you seek ways to help your neighbors, those whom live around you and those whom you meet and know, or do you live carelessly without taking the time to con-

sider how you might help someone in need? Do you allow anger or resentment to lead you to take revenge on oth-

ers? Do you act rudely to your spouse, your closest neighbor, when you do not get your way and do things to “get

even” with him or her? Do you display a peaceful and calm spirit or do you lean towards anger and violence? Examine

your ways so that you can build a blessed home!
