“For our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:29
It was always fun warning people they could blow up their house, unless, of course, they bought the nicer range with the auto-lock for the self-cleaning
feature.
I spent three years selling ap-pliances for Sears, and it never did get old. The looks on their face, the confusion, the lingering doubt. Of course, I would go on to explain how an oven would get so hot while it was in the self-cleaning mode that, if you opened up the oven door, the oxygen in the very air of the kitchen would provide enough fuel for a fairly decent explosion. Better not leave a chance the toddler would undo the manual lock and accidentally ruin the other stainless steel appliances they would be buying from me… oh, and,
I suppose they should protect the
toddler, too.
Fire is fairly simple to under-stand. Substances begin chemically combining, feeding off of oxygen and each other to fuel the transforma-tion. The faster the transformation, the more heat and light that is given off. Typically, the end result is a charred mess, and maybe some nice,
toasty marshmallows.
Romans 12:1 urges all of us to “present your bodies a living sacri-fice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Paul knew it was *only reasonable!* that we should provide our lives as a sacrifice, considering all that Jesus Christ has done for us. This scrip-ture wasn’t just written as an after-thought or a good idea, but as part of an unavoidable truth: without that sacrifice, and diligent work to keep that sacrifice pleasing, there would
be no fire in our lives.
Imagine if you soaked your logs before you tried to burn them. Or, rather than use wood, you tried to throw concrete blocks in the fire
pit. Or… now this one is a stretch… what if you kept lighting matches and throwing them into an empty fire pit, expecting something to
start?
Our God, just like a natural fire, consumes, combines, and trans-forms us when we come into contact with Him. We fireproof our lives when we don’t offer Him any of our time, or when we soak our spirits down with sin, or offer him whatever happens to be lying around extra in
our lives that’s convenient.
It’s almost like some Chris-tians have an auto-lock mechanism that will allow God to burn clean our grimy guilt when we visit church weekly, but we keep that fire con-tained and from messing with the stuff in the kitchen that caused the mess to begin with ! I want to crank up the heat, throw wide the door, and offer God EVERYTHING I am. Sure, some thing He’ll burn out might hurt for awhile, but it’s only reasonable to yield everything for Him when He gave His everything
for my salvation.
One small thing way we’re going to proffer more fuel to the Lord this month is through a “Fuel 4 God Media Fast,” beginning May 20th and ending May 31st. Take the time you would normally spend online, in front of the television, or otherwise expending your mental energies on secular entertainment activities and turn it over to the Christ whose Word encourages us to think on bet-ter things. Spend extra time in prayer, in the Word, or *gasp* in
real fellowship with people.
Everyone is encouraged to participate, as I’m sure anyone who makes this reasonable sacrifice unto the Lord will be blessed accordingly
and bountifully!
Meanwhile, don’t pinch your pennies when purchasing: get the
auto-locking self-cleaning range. T.J. Heidenreich, Student Pastor

IS IT IMPORTANT?
This month, as promised, the topic that will be covered is baptism and whether or not it’s still relevant in today’s society. Many people have different opinions on baptism. They differ on how to be baptized, when to be baptized, and if baptism is still necessary in general. This is not an issue that can be taken lightly, because it is a very vital part of the Bible’s outline for salvation. “Well, what is the big deal?” you may ask. So, let’s take a closer look into it. In John 3:5 it says: “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
Jesus is explaining to Nicodemus how to be saved. He said, “Except a man be born of the water...he cannot en-ter into the kingdom of God.” That put baptism in a very important role. Jesus said, paraphrasing, “Hey, listen up! If you aren’t baptized you’re not going to get into the kingdom of God!” Entering the kingdom of God is a BIG DEAL! So, if entering into the kingdom of God = big deal, and being baptized means entering into the kingdom of God, then being baptized = big deal. Mark 16:16 says: “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” Here it says belief and baptism = salvation—it’s IMPORTANT!
If baptism is important, is how you are baptized important? The answer is “Yes!” Being baptized in Jesus name, by immersion, is the way that the Bible instructs us. Although I have run out of space for this issue, I will include some verses for you to study.
Jesus name—Acts 2:38, Acts 8:16, Acts 19:5
Immersion—John 3:23 (“much water there” would only be needed if baptism by immersion was being practiced), Matthew 3:16 (Jesus, when baptized, came “up out of the water”)

APRIL. “What’s That
Smell?” Each Wednesday
night we focused on a differ-
ent element of the gospel:
death, burial, resurrection, and
revelation. Our Sunday
school classes were focused
on teaching the fruit of the
Spirit and the works of the
flesh so that students would
be able to smell the difference
between right and wrong in
the motives that drive their
daily living.
MAY. Amplify is launching
its Summer theme, “Amplify
Aflame.” May’s theme is
“Fuel 4 God,” and students
will be encouraged to provide
the fuel God requires to set a
spiritual blaze in their lives.
All students (and any adults
that would like to come
along!) will be encouraged to
partake in an 11-day media
fast from May 20-30.
JUNE. Youth Camp is
