sostanziale?) negli autori come Ritschl e Herrmann 4.
1 JeeHo Kim, John B. Cobb, Jr. (1925- ), in «Internet» 2012, http://people.bu.edu/wwildman/bce/mwt_themes_850_cobb.htm: «Cobb
believes that Christocentrism "requires of the Christian the rejection of all arrogance, exclusivism, and dogmatism in relation to other ways"
because it is rooted divine Sophia, Wisdom "which is the very God of very God, which is embodied in Jesus”. The Wisdom is "present
everywhere and at all times" (Cobb 1987, 88). It is the source of all living life and of all human understanding. However, Cobb makes a
radical statement that the affirmation of the Wisdom incarnated in Jesus does not mean that Jesus is the only channel through which God is
present in the world. On the contrary, the Wisdom we meet in Jesus is precisely the Wisdom that is already known by all. Exclusivism
implicitly denies that this Wisdom is truly God, and thus opposes the Christian understanding of the incarnation, which, in turn, is the basis
of Christocentrism. (Cobb 1987, 89) Cobb put the same point in a different way as follows: “Nevertheless, for Christians to recognize that
there may be other revelations, or that what other communities describe in quite different ways may be appropriated as revelations by
Christians, is an excellent point. (Cobb 1997, 52)».

teologico ulteriore riguardo a Cristo.
1 B. Marsh, A CHRISTOCENTRIC THEOLOGICAL METHOD, (presented to Dr. Gerardo Alfaro, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary),

a Christ-centered model is not an ideal which is placed upon the text from outside of the text. But rather, the method is based off of the
hermeneutical principles which Jesus himself both taught and demonstrated. Immediately, one recognizes the unavoidable circumstance of
what is often termed “the hermeneutical circle” or “the hermeneutical spiral” 1. This concept seeks to explain the role and necessity of
presuppositions in discovering the original, authorial meaning of a given text. In addition, “the hermeneutical spiral” represents the process
of 2 understanding the parts of a text in light of the whole. Therefore, in order to come to terms with the “whole,” the “parts” must be
interpreted. Yet, the “parts” cannot be comprehended apart from certain presuppositions or a pre-understanding of the “whole”. Thus, each
category plays a reciprocal role in permitting the reader to locate the authorial intention. However, this dynamic also occurs beyond the
exegesis of a text. At the level of practice, the “spiral” appears in developing a fuller grasp of how to emulate the significance of a text’s
meaning 3. In this paper, “the hermeneutical spiral” exists in a Christocentric theological method because the “Christ-centered” lens that is
used to better interpret the “parts” of Scripture comes from a pre-understanding of the meaning and purpose of the biblical canon. However,
as will be shown below, this particular view of the Bible as a “whole” is derived from looking at the individual verses and texts of God’s Word
and coming to terms with their specific meaning. This aspect of interpretation is unavoidable, and therefore, should not to be seen as an
objection to this paper’s proposal for a theological method that is qualified as “Christocentric”».
((1) Grant R. Osborne, The Hermeneutical Spiral: A Comprehensive Introduction to Biblical Interpretation, rev. ed. (Downers Grove: IVP
Academic, 2006), 22. Osborne prefers the term “spiral” over “circle” with reference to the cycle one makes in discerning the author’s
intended meaning. He posits, “A spiral is a better metaphor because it is not a closed circle but rather an open-ended movement from the
horizon of the text to the horizon of the reader. I am not going round and round a closed circle that can never detect the true meaning but
am spiraling nearer and nearer to the text’s intended meaning as I refine my hypotheses and allow the text to continue to cha llenge and
correct those alternative interpretations, then to guide my delineation of its significance for my situation today.” The term “spiral” is also the
preferred choice of this author. / (2) Anthony C. Thiselton, “Hermeneutical Circle,” in Dictionary for Theological Interpretation of the Bible,
eds. Kevin J. Vanhoozer, Craig G. Bartholomew, Daniel J. Treier, and N. T. Wright (Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2005), 281. In his article,
Thiselton gives a very informative description and brief analysis of the two versions of “the hermeneutical spiral” and their respective
treatments in history. Towards the end of his sketch of this concept, Thiselton recognizes that there is opportunity in the second version,
which deals with pre-understanding as opposed to meaning, to elevate the experience of the individual in shaping his or her presuppositions
above the text’s authority. Osborne also sees this tendency, and thus vies for the “spiral” metaphor in response (Osborne, The Hermeneutical
Spiral, 22). / (3) Osborne, The Hermeneutical Spiral, 32. Osborne teaches that “the hermeneutical spiral” involves text and context. The
spiraling action which the interpreter takes is one that seeks to further grasp the meaning of a text and then learns more fully how to apply
the meaning. He observes, “The ‘hermeneutical spiral’ takes place not only at the level of original intended meaning, as our understanding
spirals upward . . . to the intended meaning of a passage, but also at the level of contextualization, as our application spirals upward . . . to a
proper understanding of the significance of the passage for Christian life today.”) 2 D. M. Baillie, God was in Christ, London 1956, p. 99: «Heim. takes the notion of Leadership (Führerschaft) which is so widespread to-
day, as his clue to a satisfying Christology. The Hellenistic cults of the ancient world created the new religious category of Kyrios
(κύριος) which found its true fulfillment in Christ as Lord, and the category of Leadership has a similar significance for to-day. Thus,
according to Heim, we are in a better position to-day than were our forefathers of the Enlightenment or of the Idealistic period
for the understanding of the Lordship of Jesus, because instead of concentrating on true ideas we know what it is to give

individualismo) riallacciandosi all’intento teilhardiano, rahneriano e a Blondel.
secolo (cfr infra, parte IV, sezione A).

«incapsulare Dio»), l'unico metodo teologico adeguato è quello storico 2 .

INTRODUCTION: A VITAL REFERENCE, HOW TO SITUATE CHRIST JESUS WITHIN TODAY’S
THEOLOGICAL INTENT
all’universo (cfr volumi I, II, III, parti II).

They seem', wrote Baron, von Hügel, 'to have got hold of a kind of
Christism now, not God’. God is too difficult. Christ is easy-(is He easy?). They must have: everything easy. We hardly need God if
we have Christ. How different this is to our Lord Himself! Did He not come to, show us the Father? 1 Equally relevant is what Sir
Edwyn Hoskyns said about the Fourth Gospel: 'Throughout his work the writer is careful to emphasize that Christianity is not an
independent cult of Jesus, but the revelation of the Father and the worship of God’ 2».

number of theologians advocating some form of a Christ-centered (or, to use a fancier theological term, a "Christocentric") theology. Never
has this Christocentric clamor a been louder than right now. There are a plethora of published works not only on the need for a
Christocentric theology, but also on the need for Christocentric hermeneutics, Christocentric preaching, Christocentric living, Christocentric
ethics, and Christocentric ecclesiology. In as much as I believe to the core of my being that everything pertaining to God should be rooted in
Christ, I am on one level an enthusiastic fan of this Christocentric movement. At the same time, as one who has read a good deal of what this
Christocentric movement has produced, I have to confess that I'm beginning to suspect this term has come to mean precious little. I have put
down more than a few allegedly Christocentric tomes and wondered to myself, "What was distinctly Christ-centered about that?"»

us to the question with which this essay is primarily concerned: What exactly do Barth’s interpreters mean when they describe him as a
Christocentric theologian? To answer this question I will adopt and expand a definition of Christocentrism offered by Bruce McCormack.
According to McCormack, Barth’s particular form of Christocentrism can be defined as “the attempt…to understand every doctrine from a
centre in God’s Self-revelation in Jesus Christ; i. e. from a centre in God’s act of veiling and unveiling in Christ…. ‘Christocentrism’, for him,
was a methodological rule…in accordance with which one presupposes a particular understanding of God’s Self-revelation in reflecting upon
each and every other doctrinal topic, and seeks to interpret those topics in the light of what is already known of Jesus Christ” 1».

Barth’s theology can properly be considered Christocentric on all three points.)

1 D. M. Baillie, God was in Christ, London 1956, pp. 74-75: «There is an obvious kinship between Tillich's conception and the time-scheme
that Karl Barth works out, in which the death and resurrection of Christ and the forty days that followed make an end in principle of the old
sinful time of this world, 'the time of Pontius Pilate', and inaugurate the new time of Christ, in which His people live by faith, though they also
have to live on in this. world, subject to the conditions of the old time, for the 'interim' period which must elapse before Christ finally makes
an end of history. 1 H.-D. Wendland uses in a similar way the idea of Christ as the centre of' history, 2 Otto Piper criticizes Barth's and Tillich's
use of the phrase, 'centre of history' with reference to Christ, saying that it implies a cyclic view of history which, is incompatible with the
biblical view 3».

2 R. Abel, The Christocentric Church, in «Internet» 2012, http://www.biblical-pentecostals.org/christocentric.htm: «Chris·to·centric:
centering theologically on Christ. I imagine that just about anyone who claims to be a "Christian" would agree with the belief that Jesus Christ
should be at the heart and center of the Christian Church. And considering the definition of the word "Christocentric", I suppose most would
agree that the Church should be; "centered theologically on Christ". It is one thing, however, to claim to be in agreement with such a belief,
and quite another to live and act within the realm of Christocentrism. For the church to be Christocentric by definition, Jesus Christ must be
at the center of our theology. Our understanding of God must be based on the person of Jesus Christ the eternal Son of God as revealed to
us in the Holy Bible… "CAUSEOCENTRISM". So much is being made of trying to produce "unity" in the Church these days. In reality, those who
have their Christology right, and are truly Christocentric in their focus are already enjoying the true "unity of the Spirit". Let me put it in the
very simplest of terms. Those who are truly "born again of the Spirit", those who have found new life in Christ, do not have to strive for
"unity" they are already unified. Must apples picked from the same tree strive for unity? Of course not, you say, they all have a common
source... the tree from which they were picked was central to all of them. If, as our Lord taught in John 15, He is the vine and those who are
truly born again of His Spirit are the branches and the fruit they produce comes as a result of their connection to the vine... how can the
branches be anything but unified? They can't! Why? because Christ is central to all of them. That which is "Christocentric" will always be
unified. That which is not "Christocentric" will never know true unity. If this is so, why all the striving for "unity" among "Christians" these
days? As much as it pains me to have to say so, I believe the sad reality is that the majority of that which calls itself "Christian" in the Western
World is not. And the majority of those claiming to be "born again" are not. If peoples from various "Christian type" religions and cults cannot
all find theological centering in the Jesus Christ of the Bible then they must find some other central point on which to unify. There has risen
among the ranks of the Western religious community an organization I have labeled the "Causeocentric" church. Since this word is of my own
fabrication, I am forced to produce my own personal definition: cause·o·centric : centered ideologically on a particular cause or causes For
those of us willing to admit the truth of the matter, there is and always has been a huge doctrinal gulf between Romanism and Protestantism
that cannot be ignored and swept under the carpet. There stands a Christological chasm that cannot be spanned apart from Biblical
compromise. How then can Roman Catholics (not to mention Mormons/L.D.S., Jehovah's Witnesses, et al) and Protestants unify apart from
being Christocentric? Answer: If we can't agree on Christ, let's agree on a cause. Thus we have created "Causeocentrism". If we can't all lift up
the Biblical Christ then we'll have to lift up some religious cause». 3 J. A. Fowler, Dispensational Theology, Covenant Theology, and Christocentric Theology (A comparison of theological systems noting the
overemphasizes on continuity or discontinuity in the major theological systems), in «Internet» 2012, http://www.christinyou.net/
pages/dthcthchth.html: «Christocentic Theology. Christocentric theology is not a well-defined system of theological thought as are Covenant
theology and Dispensational theology. It is the label being recommended in this study for a theological understanding that differs from the
two previously mentioned. Covenant Theology and Dispensational theology are often viewed as the only two valid theological alternatives. If
one does not agree with the premises of Covenant theology he is often accused of being a "Dispensationalist." And vice versa, if one does
not agree with the premises of Dispensational theology, he is often accused of being an adherent of Covenant theology. I have been accused
of both at one time or another. Covenant theology and Dispensational theology often view themselves as opponents at opposite extremes of
the theological spectrum, shooting arrows across a great theological chasm. There is indeed a great diversity of opinion, as we have tried to
delineate, but from another perspective they are both camped in the same ditch. That ditch is the epistemological ditch where man-made
ideological and theological systems are debated and developed. The "idea" of common covenant and the "idea" of diverse dispensations are
both thrust forth as the honed "sword" of the Lord. Perhaps they have both missed the central emphasis of the gospel. Both Covenant
theology and Dispensational theology have well-documented socio-political and cultural backgrounds which may have provided the milieu
for "natural" ideological formation. These historical breeding grounds must be taken into account when evaluating the formulation of these
respective theological systems. Both of these theological systems tend to commence from a theological starting-point that emphasizes the
will of God, His decrees and His plan, rather than the personal character of God. The emphasis on a divine "plan" lends itself to an attempted
systematization of understanding the "plan," which soon becomes an ideological "grid" that is imposed upon all ensuing interpretation of
Scripture and theology. The covenant "idea" and the dispensation "idea" are both applied in this manner, and thus appear to be quite logically
consistent if one has accepted their initial ideological presuppositions and premises. Dispensational theology begins its application of
presuppositions in Genesis 12-17 with the expectation of a literal and physical fulfillment of an unconditional covenant with Abraham.
Covenant theology also focuses the application of its presuppositions on the "everlasting covenant" of God with Abraham in Genesis 17. Isn't
it interesting that both theologies seem to commence with epistemological premises about the fulfillment of promises to Abraham? Should
not our theology commence with divine activity prior to Abraham? The static, traditional theological terminology employed by both of these
theological systems creates a situation wherein they both engage in meaningless semantic sparring. Theologians from both camps keep
referring to the "benefits" derived from the Person and work of Jesus Christ, and how various theological categories are "applied" to
Christians. The detachment of grace, salvation, righteousness, the Holy Spirit, the Church, the gospel, etc. from the dynamic life and ontic
"Being" of the risen and living Lord Jesus, leaves but a dead and static theological system to be argued as an ideology and revered in idolatry.
Herein is the major difference in the Christocentric understanding which I propose. Theological "benefits" are not to be our focus, but the
very "Being" of Jesus Christ. It would probably be quite presumptuous to assert that the historical background for this theological
interpretation goes all the way back to the first century, for all theologies would want to assert that theirs was the original interpretation.
Still, I assert that the center-point of all history and the focus of all the Scriptures is in Jesus Christ. Likewise, it will not serve any purpose to
claim that we are proposing a Biblical theology, as every variety of Christian theology claims that their system is in accord with the Bible, as
they interpret it. Important features of Christocentric theology will include the premises that (1) Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of Messianic
promises in the Old Testament, (2) All of God's redemptive and salvific actions are centered in and expressive of the Person and work of
Jesus Christ, and (3) God continues to act in grace as the dynamic life of the risen Lord Jesus is lived out in Christians. The Bible does not
commence with Abrahamic promises. The Bible does not begin at Genesis 12 or 17. Neither should our theological explanation. Immediately
after the fall of man into sin, recorded in Genesis 3:1-7, God began to make "promises" of the Messiah He would send to remedy the death
consequences of man's sin and restore the spiritual presence of God in man. The first Messianic promise is found in Genesis 3:15 when God
promised that "the seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent." Messianic promises precede and supersede Abrahamic
promises! Messianic promises are universal in their application and spiritual in their fulfillment, rather than racially, nationally or religiously
exclusive in physical, militaristic and geographic fulfillment. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Messianic promises of the Old Testament,
including those given to Abraham in Genesis 12, 15 and 17. The Old Testament believers, including Abraham, "died in faith, without
receiving the promises" (Heb. 11:13,39), but for new covenant Christians "as many as may be the promises of God, in Jesus Christ they are
Yes," affirmed and fulfilled (II Cor. 1:20). Jesus Christ is the central "key" to understanding all of God's promises, all of God's dealing with
man, and all of the Biblical record». 1 H. Vorgrimler, Henri de Lubac, in R. Vander Gucht e H. Vorgrimler, Ritratti di teologi, in idem, Bilancio della teologia del XX secolo, v. 4,

2 A. Dulles, Tradition and Creativity in Theology, in «First Things» (Issue Archive 1992), in «Internet» 2012, http://www.
firstthings.com/article/2008/02/002-tradition-and-creativity-in-theology-14: «Paradoxically, therefore, the most innovative artists and
scientists have often been the most deeply traditional. Each renaissance has been, at root, a ressourcement. Literary revolutionaries such as
T. S. Eliot were deeply immersed in the classical sources. James Joyce's Ulysses must be understood against the background of a long
tradition stretching back to Homer. So, likewise, the theologians who have made the greatest contributions by their personal genius have
taken pains to labor within the tradition. What would Luther have been without Augustine, Newman without Athanasius, or de Lubac without
Origen? One may apply to the theologian what Eliot says of the poet: “We shall often find that not only the best, but the most individual parts
of his work may be those in which the dead poets, his ancestors, assert their immortality most vigorously.”… In fields such as art, music, and
literature, it has been persuasively argued that creativity depends on “a fundamental encounter with transcendence.” “In most cultures,” says
George Steiner, “in the witness borne to poetry and art until the most recent modernity, the source of ‘otherness' has been actualized or
metaphorized as transcendent. It has been invoked as divine, as magical, or daimonic.” In many great works of art, such a referral to the
transcendent is explicit. Whatever may be true in other fields, this relation to transcendence is essential in theology. The Christian tradition,
stemming as it does from the presence of the God-man within history, perpetuates both the memory and the presence of its founder.
Transmitting the ancient heritage in ever new frameworks, the Church continually reactualizes the mystery that is at the heart of its being. In
a certain sense tradition may be regarded as the Christian mystery transmitting itself. It is, in the words of Henri de Lubac, “the very Word of
God both perpetuating and renewing itself under the action of the Spirit of God, . . . the living Word entrusted to the Church and to those to
whom the Church never ceases to give birth.” For this reason, says de Lubac, “Tradition, according to the Fathers of the Church, is in fact just
the opposite of a burden of the past: it is a vital energy, a propulsive as much as a protective force”».

WALGRAVE, Geloof en theologie in de crisis, Kasterlee, 1967.

de theorie der zuivere natuur, in «Bijdragen» 10, 1949, p. 105-127.
preparata dai teologi di Lovanio (R. Tapper, J. Driego) e da Bafiez, è stata creata da Bellarmino.) 1 W. Hankey, AUGUSTINE IN THE 20TH-CENTURY REVIVAL OF NEOPLATONISM IN FRANCE (for “Augustine and Augustinianism,” the School of Philosophy, Fall

relations between this neo-Neoplatonism and this neo-Augustinianism. First, with Maurice Blondel (1861-1949), their projects are identical.
Second, with Henri de Lubac (1896-1991), there is a strong criticism of the Augustinian tradition beginning with Scotus, together with an
endeavour to hold to Augustine himself as sharply distinguished from his late medieval and modern followers. De Lubac had determined that
this Augustinianism was at the origins of the modern atheism for which he was seeking a cure. Third, with Jean Trouillard (1907-1984) and
others, there is a criticism of Augustine himself as a source for what is causing the destruction of transcendent religion in Western
Christendom. Jean-Luc Marion’s position mixes a number of these moments and his present importance in the transatlantic intellectual
world makes it appropriate to conclude this lecture with remarks about his work».

2012, http://www.americamagazine.org/content/article.cfm?article_id=10726: «As his friend and disciple Hans Urs von Balthasar pointed
out, de Lubac’s first book, Catholicism, is programmatic for his entire career. The various chapters are like limbs that would later grow in
different directions from the same trunk. The title of this youthful work expresses the overarching intuition. To be Catholic, for de Lubac, is
to exclude nothing; it is to be complete and comprehensive. He sees God’s creative and redemptive plan as including all human ity and
indeed the entire cosmos. For this reason the plan demands a unified center and a goal. That center is the mystery of Christ, which will be
complete and plainly visible at the end of time. The universal outreach of the church rests on its inner plenitude as the body of Christ.
Catholicity is thus intensive as well as extensive. The church, even though small, was already Catholic at Pentecost. Its task is to achieve, in
fact, the universality that it has always had in principle. Embodying unity in diversity, Catholicism seeks to purify and elevate all that is good
and human».

uniquely integrative of spirituality and dogmatic theology. Two such books are his The Spirituality of the New Testament and the Church
Fathers and his Introduction to Spirituality. Bouyer always argued for the need for the modern Christian West to rediscover the connection

Meaning of the Monastic Life is perhaps the most important of all in this regard. Davide Zordan, a scholar of Bouyer based in Italy, has
argued that Bouyer stands out among twentieth century ressourcement theologians in bringing to light the Church's tradition of monastic
theology. Bouyer was also steeped in biblical theology, having been trained first in the methods of historical-critical scholarship and then
under the tutelage of Oscar Cullmann. His capacities as a biblical scholar were on display in a translation and commentary on the Gospel of
John that he did early in his career that was highly regarded. I would also like to point to his nine volumes on systematic theology, which I
have already mentioned, particularly his book Cosmos: The World and the Glory of God. This book is an immensely wide-ranging, systematic
synthesis, drawing on a rich array of sources, ancient and modern. It demonstrates a profound, traditional understanding of the relationship
of the world to the triune God. It has implications for the relationship of theology to science and opens paths for connecting continental
Catholic theology to Anglophone thought».

within the Christian Church can be described as more heavily Christocentric. Notably, the teachings of Augustine of Hippo and Paul of

in Reformation theology, the Lutheran tradition is seen as more theologically Christocentric, as it places its doctrine of justification by grace,
which is primarily a Christological doctrine, at the center of its thought. Meanwhile, the Calvinist/Reformed tradition is seen as more
theologically theocentric, as it places its doctrine of the sovereignty of God ("the Father") at the center».

cgi?article=1023&context=modlanggerman: «Luther redefines the term "potentia dei ordinata" in strictly Christocentric terms. God's
ordained power lies in the "incarnate Son," as he writes in the Genesis Commentary: "We must reflect on God's ordered [or ordained] power,
that is, on the incarnate Son, in whom are hidden all the treasures of the Godhead (Co1.23). Let us go to the child lying in the lap of His
mother Mary and to the sacrificial victim suspended on the cross; there we shall really behold God, and there we shall look into His very
heart. We shall see that He is compassionate and does not desire the death of the sinner, but that the sinner should 'turn from his way and
live' (Ezek. 33:l It is Christ crucified and raised from the dead who is the means of salvation revealed according to God's ordained power.
Thus Luther has effectively lowered the roof of spiritual knowledge from the deus absolutus (or deus absconditus) to the deus revelatus.
Here the mysteries of salvation are revealed. More one need not know about God. Furthermore, even within this restricted sphere the
intellect is impotent. For by nature it is curvus in se and seeks salvation within. The intellect enlightened by the Holy Spirit sees the absolute
difference between God and self, and only at this point can the individual respond in faith to the revealed salvation which lies extra se».

566, 567, 571) : «The presence of Christ has been seen, in recent Christologies, as a presence in society, a social presence, rather than as a
presence within the self, a spiritual presence apprehended in the inner life. 1 The balance needs to be corrected. As a modest contribution to
this, I intend to survey the centrality of Christ in mystical experience, as this may be illustrated from medieval and post-Reformation Catholic
mysticism. Rather than patristic sources, I have selected the Middle Ages and the early Counter Reformation simply because I know these
better. Medieval piety is Christocentric. This is true for all periods of the Middle Ages. 2
Yet the meaning of this focus and its style evolve
together with the pictures of Christ which dominate theology and art. The Christ of the monastic age corresponds to the Romanesque taste,
the Christ of the friars to that of the Gothic artists. The former highlights the divinity of Christ present in the flesh or, reversely, the humanity
of Christ transfigured by his divinity; the latter stresses the humanity of Jesus in its humiliated and suffering state. In terms of piety, the
former leads to adoration and participation, the latter to identification and imitation. Yet these orientations stand in contrast, not in
contradiction. They are not mutually exclusive, though they highlight significant priorities. … Although Franciscans and Dominicans followed
differing orientations in their apostolic work and their practice of religious life, they both spread a Christocentric piety centered on the
humanity of Jesus. … The Friars Preachers also promoted a Christocentric piety, as instanced in the Rosary as a meditated prayer focused on
the mysteries of Jesus and Mary. At a more intellectual level, they too practiced a Gothic piety. The vision of Christ crucified in the form of a
seraph in chapter 43 of the Life of Henry Suso (1295-1366) may well have been inspired by Francis’ previous vision. … St. Gertrude belongs
among the Rhineland mystics. So does an anonymous "friend of God," author of The Book of the Poor in Spirit (ca. 1530), who however is not
so Christocentric and presents the following of Christ as only one among four ways to God. 3 On the contrary, the Theologia Germanica, an
anonymous work written in or near Frankfurt around 1350 and known to the modern world chiefly through the two editions published by
Martin Luther, stresses equally the apophatic, negative character of the experience of God and the necessary mediator-ship of Christ 4. …
Influenced by the Fathers of the Church, by the medieval scholastics, especially Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure, by the Christian
Neoplatonism of Denys and, more recently, of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-94) , 5
by the Rhineland mystics, and by the mystical
tradition of the Reformed Carmel, the major authors of the French school build a powerful synthesis of theology and piety in their spiritual
writings. The founder of the movement, Cardinal Pierre de Bérulle (1575-1629), teaches a highly original Christocentric spirituality. I would
venture to call it the first modern Christology».
(1 This is particularly true of some of the Christologies of liberation, e.g., José Miranda, Marx and the Bible (MaryknoU, N.Y., 1974); Being and
the Messiah (Maryknoll, N.Y., 1977). In Jesus Christ Liberator (Maryknoll, N.Y., 1978), Leonardo Boff investigates "ways in which the
Resurrected Christ is present today" (208-25); but this presence of Christ seems always to be in others, never in oneself. This is fairly typical
of a basic orientation of liberation theologies. / 21 am aware of the inadequacy of the expression "Middle Ages," as demonstrated by Regine

by means of a scientific examination of phenomena. Against such positivist pretensions, Blondel asserts that phenomena, in other words,
scientific and historical facts, are only outer images of the real, inner reality of human life.{3} In "History and Dogma," Blondel applies
L'Action's general critique of positive science to the more specific issue of biblical exegesis. His comments hinge on an important distinction
he makes between "technical and critical history" on the one hand and "real history" on the other. Technical and critical history deals not with
the inner reality of life itself but rather with phenomena, i.e., the outer manifestations of life's inner, spiritual reality. Real history, on the
other hand, is "the substitute for the life of humanity, the totality of historical truths." It includes the vital spiritual reality of human life which
is never wholly represented or exhausted by the historical phenomena. "Between these two histories, of which one is a science and the other
a life, one resulting from a phenomenological method and the other tending to represent genuine reality, there is an abyss."{4} For Blondel,
"tradition" plays an indispensable hermeneutical role in the interpretation of historical persons, events, and texts because it has as its
content precisely what technical/critical history fails to reach, viz, that "real history" which includes the inner, spiritual character of the
persons and events under study. Tradition, then, "preserves not so much the intellectual aspect of the past as its living reality."{5} If
interpretation is to yield life and not just abstractions, in Blondel's view, tradition must not be excluded from the hermeneutical process.
There is an additional hermeneutical principle that Blondel identifies which goes beyond the bounds of critical history. In a chapter of
L'Action entitled "The Value of Literal Practice and the Conditions of Religious Action," {6} Blondel insists that active performance of religious
practices is essential for real entrance into the conceptual knowledge of a religious idea in all its fullness and profundity. Thus, a believer
cannot attain the "spirit" of religion, i.e., its sublime and inner meaning, without first observing the "letter," i.e., the very ordinary and
mundane practices it counsels, since, according to Blondel, "the letter is the spirit in action." {7} "The thought that follows upon the act,"
declares Blondel, "is infinitely richer than the thought that precedes it."{8} This is so because action, more than mere thoughts or sentiments,
penetrates into the very depths of a person, causing the truth of which it is a vehicle to become immanent in him or her. Hence, the truth
that is practiced is known from within and is therefore grasped more completely and accurately than one which is known and held
"exteriorly" through intellectual assent alone. The thinker who fails to do the truth will never really be able to understand it. This
methodological principle surely carries over to "History and Dogma." In order to know and adequately explain the reality to which the data of
Scripture points, the exegete must not only be operating from within the tradition, but also must be engaged in the concrete practices which

1 R. P. McBrien, Catholicism, Minneapolis 1980, vol. I, p. 219: «The most constructive Catholic response to Modernism was formulated by
Maurice Blondel (d. 1949), who, as we have already seen, anticipated the work of such theologians as Karl Rahner and Gregory Baum. He
rejected both the excessive immanentism of Modernism (which excluded any transcendental dimension) and the excessive extrinsicism of the
anti-Modernist documents (which tended to portray revelation as something coming totally from outside). Blondel called his mediating
position the "method of immanence." An analysis of human action, he suggested. shows a dynamism which moves us toward a goal lying
beyond our power to achieve it, but which, if it were offered as a supernatural gift, would be a genuine fulfillment of the human. The
Transcendental Thomist movement of the early twentieth century was itself directly indebted to Blondel: Joseph Maréchal (d. 1944), Henri
Bouillard, and others ...».

Loisy (1857-1940), concerned with the relations of history, dogma, and philosophy, he had discovered “philosophical gaps within critical
exegesis.”1 His questions about how history and philosophy were done within the Catholic Church, and about their relations with theology,
had a strong effect upon the Jesuits at Fourvière where they helped inspire the great series of Patristic and Medieval texts, “Sources
chrétiennes,” founded there. This return to sources was not theologically and philosophically neutral. Partly it was a reaction, inspired by
Blondel’s “method of immanence,” against the divorce of Scripture and tradition and of truth and history 3».

esthetic appreciation. Yves Congar offered a vision of the Church that focused on the presence of the ecclesial mystery in the dialectics of
history. 1 De Lubac, I would argue, more than any other theologian, offered a synthesis, or perhaps better, a many-layeredness. Journet
acknowledged the importance of history but he did not allow it to touch the Church's essence. Congar, while his position was balanced,
argued his case within a context that could make him appear to stress the historical dimensions of the mystery somewhat more than its
unchanging dimensions. De Lubac stressed simultaneously the essential mystery of the Church and the concrete working out of this mystery
in the arena of history, and he did so with a deep sense of the Church as a social body».

is deliberate. The book is a prolegomenon. It clears the ground for the fuller argument. The presentation is heavily exegetical. The aim is to
discover the historical Jesus, and the historical Jesus is available to us only in the pages of the New Testament». 1 F. Mastrofini, Vatican II in the diaries of the characters. The word to Edward Schillebeeckx, in «La stampa», 06/ 6/2012, in «Internet» 2012,

me Rede gewesen.

those Christians for whom the Church’s visibility is disturbing. This concerns not only Catholics but many other Christians as well, for whom
the Church is too visible. Fadiey Lovsky wrote about this difficulty in Chapter II of his book, Pauvrette Eglise (Poor little Church). 1 As Oscar
Cullmann pointed out well, it is clear that the Church’s visibility does not depend on the number of faithful, but on their fidelity. 2 It is surely
the action of Christians and their acceptance of their suffering for Christ’s Kingdom which makes the Church visible. However, for a Catholic
there is an indispensable point of reference where visibility is concerned: the existence of the apostolic succession, which the Western
Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox consider to be essential. Henri de Lubac, who suffered for the Church and because of the Church,
underlined the importance of this point of reference. He spoke lucidly and from experience of the negative consequences due to bad or

community nor its abandonment. Thus, visibility is always deeper than the criteria of numbers and pastoral appropriateness 4».

Sergii Bulgakov
and Karl Barth will help us in the discussion of this question. Both theologians argue in their later work that God cannot be God without the
world He chose to create and redeem. 2
Furthermore, both thinkers attempt to understand the divine necessity of creation as the result of the
very nature of God’s love. Bulgakov speaks of the divine “the necessity of love, which cannot not love, and which manifests and realizes in
itself the identity and indistinguishability of freedom and necessity.” 3
This love is Sophia as the living essence of God, the preeternal object
and content of love, which Bulgakov calls the “love of love.” 4
This love is poured out freely from Himself as a Trinity in unity for the sake of
the world so creating the world because it is a divinely necessitous love with its own inner law and structure. Furthermore, this creative love
is kenotic in its form as the ceaseless movement of self-surrender of each hypostasis to the other. Thus one may say that cross is both a
symbol of our predestined salvation (I. Pet. 1:18-20) 5
and the mutual self-renouncement of the Trinity. 6
Barth, not unlike Bulgakov, argues
for the necessity of creation from God’s love for man expressed in Jesus Christ whom God eternally chose to become. 7
Creation is in the will
of God the ‘External Basis of the Covenant’ and this is bound up intimately with the eternal will and essence of God in Jesus Christ, but more
importantly in the divine decree the ‘Covenant is the Internal Basis of Creation.’ 8
Since Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, exists in the eternal
counsel of God it becomes necessary for God to be Creator. 9
Thus given that Barth argues that Jesus Christ was in “God’s eternal counsel in
the freedom of His love” it follows that for creation “To be sure, there was no other necessity than that of His own free love.” 10 Yet although
the two thinkers are united by a common focus on the union of freedom and necessity in divine love expressed in creation and redemptio,
they ultimately part ways on the theological implications of the idea».

Barth the same intuition is expressed in his methodological Christocentrism (Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, exists in the eternal counsel

2 S. J. Garver, RAHNER AND DE LUBAC ON NATURE AND GRACE, IN «INTERNET» 2012, http://www.joelgarver.com/writ/theo/naturegrace.htm: «In point of
fact, de Lubac says very little that is directly negative about Rahner’s integralism. Of the nine or so references to Rahner in his The Mystery of
the Supernatural, they are all positive quotations of or at least neutral allusions to Rahner’s work.1 Even in as late work as his A Brief
Catechesis on Nature and Grace, de Lubac’s few passing references to Rahner seem innocuous.2 Nonetheless, there are some hints of an
underlying dissatisfaction with Rahner’s formulation of integralism, particularly de Lubac’s passing mention—“in Rahner’s
language...‘existential’...”—followed by a footnote that reads, in part, “Really, to the extent that this ‘existential’ is conceived as a kind of
‘medium’ or ‘linking reality,’ one may object that this is a useless supposition, whereby the problem of the relationship between nature and
the supernatural is not resolved, but only set aside” (1998:102). And this serves as key whereby we can detect the places in which de Lubac’s
other comments are likely directed against Rahner’s transcendental integralism. The essence of de Lubac’s critique seems to be the
following. Adding another grace-given level of desire for grace (the supernatural existential), in fact does nothing to overcome the paradox
of the sheer gratuity of grace and the rejection of extrinsicism. What Rahner achieves is a new two-tier system to replace the old, except now
it is expressed in terms of transcendental philosophy rather than neo-scholastic metaphysics. 3 In point of fact, the structure of the
supernatural existential is scarcely distinguishable from the purely natural self-transcendence present in the human pre-apprehension
(Vorgriff) of limitless being. The concrete experience of both the Vorgriff and the supernatural existential turns out to be, more or less, a
longing for something beyond our finitude. The object of that longing, however, is still distinguished by Rahner as a “formal object” whose
content remains unspecified until made explicit through Christian revelation.4 On Rahner’s view, from de Lubac’s perspective, it seems that
apart from this revelation of grace, universally available as the object of our longing, the historically particular events of grace—the life,
death, and resurrection of Jesus—would remain extrinsic to us. How is the role of revelation, making explicit the content of our longings,
supposed to preserve the absolute gratuity—the unexpected and incommensurable character—of grace? Does not the Rahnerian solution,
instead, reduce grace to our merely natural expectations (paralleled in the supernatural existential without real differentiation) and thereby
“naturalizes” it, precisely as Rahner implies de Lubac is guilty of? This is where Blondel’s phenomenology of human action and historical
events rises to the surface of de Lubac’s integralism. For de Lubac, and his followers, it is precisely and only within and by reference to
certain historical events, actions, and symbols, that the supernatural can be identified in all of its unexpected and incommensurable gratuity.
De Lubac will not begin, as Rahner, with something universal for every person, inscribed into the a priori structure of knowledge, but with
the unique supernatural revelation of God in Christ that, while it does satisfy our natural longings, does so by shattering them with the Good
News of God in the flesh to which the proper reaction is to be “struck dumb with amazement” (1998:132-139). Only in light of this
supernatural revelation can the full gratuity of the end of human nature be truly known. This perspective is aptly summarized by Medard
Kehl, “Even if the creature represents a presupposed reflection of the creator and his love, the historical event of God redeeming us in Christ
does not result from this presupposition. The positive content of the analogous correspondence between the created order of nature and the
historical order of salvation lies precisely in the (gratuitously given) openness for the, once again, “totally other,” underivable completion of
the self-revelation of God in Christ which could never be calculated from creation itself and which is thus to be received only as pure gift.
(1982:22)”5».

affection for him" (1998:107). / (2) The work dates, in the original French edition, from 1980. He does, however, refer to Rahner’s writings as
"somewhat contorted explanations" (1984:35) not an unfair description, the honest reader will admit, I think. / (3) Indeed this might be just
what we would expect given that transcendental philosophy itself is an outgrowth of the very neo-scholastic categories that Rahner is
attempting to use it to undermine. See the accounts of Gillespie 1995 and Montag 1999. / (4) De Lubac develops his own epistemology as an

http://www.ts.mu.edu/readers/content/pdf/69/69.3/69.3.2.pdf: «Lonergan’s basic position on the whole issue comes in a paper he
delivered to the Jesuit Philosophical Association in 1949 entitled “The Natural Desire to See God.” 1 The context for the discussion is provided
by a consideration of the dynamism of the human mind, a factor that Lonergan and de Lubac had learned to appreciate from their studies of
Rousselot and Maréchal. This dynamism is constituted by our desire for knowledge and is manifested in our ceaseless pursuit of questions,
whether questions about existence (“Is it so?”) or about essence (“What is it?”). Such a desire for knowledge is unrestricted in its scope and
finds no rest except in the answers to the various questions. Indeed, so unrestricted is this desire that, once the existence of God is known,
God himself becomes the object of our questioning. This question as to the nature of God can be answered on two levels, the one natural,
the other supernatural; the one philosophical and analogical, the other theological and, in this life, incomplete—but in the next life complete
and beatific in the immediate vision of God. This familiar piece of Scholastic doctrine yields one key insight for the solution to our problem.
It gives us a way of identifying the end of human existence, namely in the knowledge and love of God, prescinding from whether that end is
achieved in the imperfect beatitude of a natural state or in the perfect beatitude of supernatural fulfillment. Consequently, formally and as
such, the desire for knowledge belongs to neither a purely natural nor a supernatural order but is simply human. In itself it is not specifically
a desire for the beatific vision but for its own fulfillment. In so far as the desire for knowledge is innate and, in that sense, natural to our
humanity, it retains its meaning as a desire with its own constitutive finality, whether our humanity exists in a purely natural or supernatural
world order. As Lonergan succinctly puts it, “The end of man is God, in any case, but the mode in which man attains God may be natural or
supernatural” 2».

2012, http://www.ts.mu.edu/readers/content/pdf/69/69.3/69.3.2.pdf: «Lonergan’s criticism of de Lubac reflects the contrast between two
different styles of theology. Especially at this stage of his career, Lonergan is working within what he himself calls the systematic
differentiation of consciousness, where the focus is on systematic meaning and on the relationships among things themselves rather than on
their relationships to us. De Lubac, on the other hand, was always primarily a historian, and even though Surnaturel was a most influential
essay in speculative thought and contains significant work in the realm of theory, he himself refers to it as “my historical study.” 1 This
locates it predominantly within what Lonergan would call the scholarly differentiation of consciousness, where the focus is not primarily on
systematic meaning but on the common-sense language of another time and place. 2 De Lubac would often remain content with symbols
and paradoxes, and some may regard his tolerance of apparent systematic inconsistencies as one of his strengths; 3 yet when such tolerance
is viewed against the background of Lonergan’s distinction between common-sense realms and theoretic realms of meaning, anyone
convinced of the importance of this distinction will want to get behind such inconsistencies to a more systematic and coherent viewpoint. 4
Perhaps this methodological comment will make more acceptable my now trying to put together some defense of de Lubac, again using
language that he himself does not normally use, namely that of potency and act. 5 If one regards the human mind as simply potency, it is a
purely natural reality. For de Lubac, in the present order of the world, the activity of the mind becomes supernaturalized once it passes from
potency to act. This actuation is the desire in act, which is God’s gift and call. 6 Such desire is in the nature but not simply of that nature, and
one aspect of this desire is an exigency for a supernatural fulfillment, the exigency not arising from the nature as such but being received
from God. This act of desire is now something like Rahner’s supernatural existential, to which it corresponds. 7 If this interpretation can be
maintained, one can attribute more consistency to de Lubac than Lonergan gave him credit for, even though one may consider that the
charge of a certain lack of clarity remains valid».

approach is deeply indebted to de Lubac’s, with the following difference: “de Lubac, ever the patristic scholar, emphasized the upward
movement of divine ascent, while Balthasar’s incarnational approach emphasized divine descent into the created realities of this-worldly time
and space.” Von Balthasar consciously distances himself from Neo-Platonism by underscoring the radical distinction between creator and
creature. Yet, as Boersma says, von Balthasar also highly praises many Church Fathers whose thought is shaped by Neo-Platonism, especially
Maximus the Confessor. Similarly, in his dialogue with Barth, von Balthasar agrees that there is “no neutral concept of being”».

Barth the object of theology is God, the Word of God, and its revelation in Jesus Christ. Any other method imposes, in principle, man-made
constructs on that which transcends man.’ So, according to Barth, Christology forms ‘the heart of the Church’s dogmatics’ and any deficiency
or deviation here ‘would mean error or deficiency everywhere.’ 2 Christology is so fundamental to Barth’s theology that von Balthasar defines
Barth’s approach as ‘radically Christocentric’ and asserts that he ‘interprets all secular and worldly relations and realities’ on that basis 3».

IL CRISTOCENTRISMO STORICO DI FRONTE ALLA
TEOLOGIA PLURALISTA
constitution of the Church. Leahy states that the Marian chapter of Lumen Gentium was important for the Church’s renewal. 1 As we have
seen, de Lubac draws a comparison between the life of Mary and the life of the Church that suggests we emulate the Blessed Virgin in our
interaction with the world. … Conclusion. De Lubac’s communion ecclesiology is a framework built upon a sacramental system. This
framework is enriched by an understanding of sacraments as instruments of unity and female paradigms emblematic of motherhood. This
maternal model of Church suggests inclusion and universality. The Church at this time needs to show that its systems and organization are
forces for good in the world. In what better way to do this that to return to the work of one of the finest minds of Vatican II».

Beauty is the disinterested one, without which the ancient world refused to understand itself, a word which both imperceptibly and yet

salvation is confronted, for de Lubac salvation is presented as inherently social and the church is seen not just as a mediator of salvation, but
as the very goal of salvation. De Lubac picks up the Gospel theme that reconciliation with God and reconciliation with one’s neighbor are
united in a single movement so that the reconciled community of the church together in God is the very content of salvation. Thus salvation
requires a historical event of being enfolded into the narrative of the historical people of God in relation to the unique events of the
Incarnation and redemption wrought by Christ (1950:50ff.). In terms of the manifestation of salvation in history, rather than positing some
kind of “anonymous” free response to grace on the part of certain individuals, de Lubac situates salvation historically in relation to human
events. Recall that de Lubac’s conception of the relation between nature and grace is built upon Blondel’s account of human action as the
event of desiring God and accepting grace, not as something that is universally present alongside each action, but as the very particularity of
action itself. As such human persons experience the reality of salvation in that particularity insofar as their actions are connected to the
historical event of Christ, whether shaped by his influence, by anticipation and preparation, or by some other real, historical (even if unseen)
connection. Moreover, de Lubac’s account does not offer a generalized “salvation” that is identical for each and every individual, but, in its
being historically situated, is unique for the person in how it is offered and in the individual response, incorporating that person into
salvation with a particular “narratological” relation to both the past history of God’s people and what he or she will contribute to its future.
This also overcomes any dichotomy between the individual and the ecclesial since the particularities of salvation for this or that individual are
indispensable from the overall shape of Christian history and thus the particularities of salvation for everyone else—each is indispensable for
all. (1950: 253-258)».
Er steht pro me.

problematiche cristologiche e possiamo dire cristocentristiche in gioco.

all’ecclesiocentrismo di Maritain 3.

Word/articles-commentaries/June-2012/Yves-Congar-and-the-Meaning-of-Vatican-II.aspx: «In the wake of the council, the triumphant
progressive party formed an international journal called “Concilium,” the stated purpose of which was to perpetuate the spirit of the great
gathering that had prompted such positive change in the Church. On the board of “Concilium” were Rahner, Kung, Schillebeeckx, de Lubac,
Congar, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Ratzinger and many others. But after only a few years, three figures—Balthasar, de Lubac, and Ratzinger—
decided to break with “Concilium” and found their own journal, and the reasons they gave to justify this decision are extremely illuminating.
First, they said, the board of “Concilium” was claiming to act as a secondary magisterium, or official teaching authority, alongside the
bishops. Theologians certainly have a key role to play in the understanding and development of doctrine, but they cannot supplant the
bishops’ responsibility of holding and teaching the apostolic faith. Secondly, the “Concilium” board wanted to launch Vatican III when the ink
on the documents of Vatican II was barely dry. That is to say, they wanted to ride the progressive momentum of Vatican II toward a whole
series of reforms—women’s ordination, suspension of priestly celibacy, radical reform of the church’s sexual ethic, etc.—that were by no
means justified by the texts of the council. Thirdly, and in my judgment most significantly, Balthasar, Ratzinger, and de Lubac decried the
“Concilium” board’s resolve to perpetuate the spirit of the council. Councils, they stated, are sometimes necessary in the life of the Church,
but they are also perilous, for they represent moments when the Church throws itself into question and pauses to decide some central issue
or controversy. We think readily here of Nicea and Chalcedon, which addressed crucial issues in Christology, or Trent, which wrestled with
the challenge of the Reformation. Councils are good and necessary, but the Church also, they contended, turns from them with a certain
relief in order to get back to its essential work. The perpetuation of the spirit of the council, they concluded, would be tantamount to a
Church in a permanent state of suspense and indecision».

dogma secondo categorie esistenziali.

usually viewed as polar-opposites, Benedict and Kung have led curiously parallel lives. Both are native German-speakers. They are almost the
same age. For a time, both taught at the same university. During the Second Vatican Council, they served as theological advisors with
reputations as reformers. More-attuned participants at Vatican II, however, immediately noticed differences between Kung and the-then Fr.
Joseph Ratzinger. One such person was the Jesuit Henri de Lubac – a French theologian who no-one could dismiss as a reactionary. In his
Vatican II diaries, de Lubac entered pithy observations about those he encountered. Ratzinger is portrayed as one whose powerful intellect is
matched by his “peacefulness” and “affability.” Kung, by contrast, is denoted as possessing a “juvenile audacity” and speaking in “incendiary,
superficial, and polemical” terms. Fr. de Lubac, incidentally, was a model of courtesy his entire life. Something about Kung clearly bothered
him».

«Internet» 2012, http://www.ts.mu.edu/readers/content/pdf/60/60.2/60.2.1.pdf: «De Lubac's use of images drawn from Scripture and
tradition to express the reality of the Church stands in stark contrast with the ecclesiological approach taken by Hans Küng. In his
Christianity: Essence, History, Future, Küng excoriates Möhler, Newman, de Lubac, and Balthasar for their Romantic portrayals of the Church.
He speaks of their "idealizations, mystifications, and glorifications which, while not uncritical, have virtually no consequences for the Roman
system." 1
Küng tells a story of how, following a talk he had given in St. Peter's at the time of Vatican II, de Lubac commented that "one
doesn't talk like that about the Church. Elle est quand-même notre mère: after all, she's our mother!" 2
Küng then goes on to speak
facetiously of the many clergy who suffer from a "mother-complex." He objects to any positing of an ideal essence of the Church that is
disconnected from its actual historical manifestations, including its many dark abominations. One of the major strengths of de Lubac,
however, is precisely that he is able to operate on the level of ideal, mystical speech about the Church while at the same time acknowledging
fully the level of dark abominations. 3
Both Küng and de Lubac are highly aware of how speech on this level has been used to mystify and to
cover-up by clothing all too human decisions and failings in the guise of sacral legitimations. Küng, however, takes this insight to such an
extreme that he cuts off all access to this traditional and fruitful avenue toward realizing the depth of what the Church truly is as a
dimension of that which has been revealed to Christians by God. 4
The heritage of de Lubac offers a much-needed corrective on this point».
((1) Christianity: Essence, History, Future, trans, by John Bowden (New York: Continuum, 1995 [German orig. 1994]) 4. / (2) Ibid. / (3) Wood
shows how de Lubac is able to avoid the danger, often associated with a Body of Christ ecclesiology, of an uncritical christomonism that can
fail to account for human limitation and failure in the Church. He does this by using a range of images, some of which, like the Bride of
Christ, highlight the distinction between Christ and the Church (Spiritual Exegesis and the Church 88-95). Wood also points out that, though
it remained undeveloped, there exist grounds in de Lubac's work from which the pneumatological dimensions of the Church could be
cultivated (ibid. 149-51). ( (4)
I do not wish to take away from Hans Küng's profoundly positive contributions to ecclesiology. On this point,

convert to the Gospel, they should not renounce whatever good in those religions. He writes: “As against the “extraordinary” way of salvation
which is the Church, the world religions can be called – if this is rightly understood – the “ordinary” way of salvation for non-Christian
humanity. God is the Lord not only of the special salvation history of the Church, but also of the universal salvation history of all mankind;
this universal salvation history is bound up with the special salvation history in having a common origin, meaning and goal and being subject
to the same grace of God.182 Speaking in terms of “ordinary” and “extraordinary” ways of salvation has raised many objections183. For
Küng, the former is operative in general salvation history for non-Christians, and the latter is operative in the Church for Christian

salvation».

may be that these terms ‘ordinary’ and ‘extraordinary’ were not too clear that Pope Paul VI wrote in the apostolic exhortation Evangelii
Nunciandi (no. 80) clarifying: according to the divine plan, salvation through explicit faith in Jesus Christ in the Church is understood to be
the norm; therefore, the “ordinary paths of salvation” are those revealed by the word and the life of Jesus Christ, even though God can work
salvation by “extraordinary ways” known to him.) 1 P. Mendonsa, Christian Witness in Interreligious Context. Approaches to Interreligious Dialogue, (Inauguraldissertation. Zur Erlangung der

~radical.faith/thought/lubac.htm (http://homepages.which.net/~radical.faith/about.htm): «Lubac's great strength lay in exposing errors in
this respect by working simply as an historian of doctrine. So, for example, he showed conclusively that the "firm and final" teachings of his
day about the nature of the Church and the Eucharist had changed radically from earlier eras - contrary to the official line that current
Roman Catholic doctrine presents eternal truth for all. In fact, he said, a desire to defend Catholic teaching had caused theologians to distort
the original teaching about the Eucharist by employing pseudo-rational methods. They had thus mistakenly come up with the doctrine of
transubstantiation. This error meant that theologians of his day should, he thought, seriously rethink the relationship between the Eucharist
and the Church. The Eucharist had originally been thought of as the mystical body of Christ. The term "body of Christ" was properly reserved
only for the Church, following Paul's original lead (1 Corinthians 12.13). What had happened, de Lubac thought, was that the term "body"
migrated in the 12th century to refer to the Church instead of the Eucharist. As a result the balance tended to shift from the Church to an
isolated, individual piety and liturgical ceremony. We should note that the Roman Catholic Church of Lubac's time was still dominated by
neo-Thomism. At the same time the official Church was intensely fearful of the perplexing challenges of modernism - as many parts of it
still are today. Lubac's approach to tradition and the Eucharist was considered shocking by many at the time (1944) and was quickly
attacked. But he was saved from the full force of official retribution by the distractions of World War II. His emphasis on change as a normal
and natural aspect of Christianity (that is, what is theologically known by some as "God's grace" operating in the world) helped open up the
Roman Church somewhat to ecumenism. This movement was gradually stifled in later years, and by the end of the 20 th century had more or
less ceased between Roman Catholics and other Christians at official level. (Though in some places a grass-roots unity is slowly being forged
at local level out of necessity.) In stressing grace, Lubac had to overcome the notion that God's action is alien from everything natural, and
particularly from human nature. The result of this way of regarding the world was that what is natural tended to be downgraded or even
demeaned in relation to the so-called spiritual. Ironically, though, Lubac later became troubled by what he saw as a tendency to secularize
important aspects of humanity in the 1960s. He thought that just as the Roman Church had retreated into a "spiritual" lager at the turn of the
19th century, so it now tended to exalt the immanent. This sort of imbalance was not what the Church should strive for».

impetus to mission. The promise of God's future righteousness is the ground of the risen Lord's commission to mission. 1 Gospel,
,command, and new obedience become elements of the reconciling process of God's promissory history. Mission becomes the axis
of Christian theology. In mission the question of God is raised and a practical answer given. In mission the texts mediating the
originating events of Christianity become meaningful. In mission the necessary proclamation of these events becomes clear».

eschaton as the horizon of the Incarnation. With the new conceptuality of this perspective he criticizes and replaces the
traditional ontological views of God and of history. By stressing the eschatological act of God, Moltmann gained significant , new
dialectical concepts for various aspects of Christian theology. God is not the totally other, eternally present divinity or the
total\y immanent, temporally changing divinity. He is the totally transforming one who creates life out of the nothingness of
death and who is the power of the future. God does not reveal himself immediately in either Word or history but rather through
his Word-history. In this promissory history men can act out of the possibilities of God and thus enter into; historically
conditioned correspondences to God's new creation».

not merely in the epilogue, Christianity is eschatology, is hope, forward looking and forward moving, and therefore also revolutionizing and
transforming the present. The eschatological is not one element of Christianity, but it is the medium of Christian faith as such, the key in
which everything in it is set, the glow that suffuses everything here in the dawn of an expected new day… Hence eschatology cannot really be
only a part of Christian doctrine. Rather, the eschatological outlook is characteristic of all Christian proclamation, of every Christian existence
and of the whole Church. There is therefore only one real problem in Christian theology …: the problem of the future. 1 To this day I believe
Moltmann was right on target. But it was not from Moltmann and the Bible alone that I first adopted ‘the coming of the future’ as the
framework of my theology. Prior to that, when I was still in my early twenties, I began to study the writings of Teilhard de Chardin, 2 the
renowned Jesuit geologist and palaeontologist, and it was he who first convinced me that not just human history, and not only the
individual’s destiny, but the whole universe must be framed by the biblical theme of promise. Cosmology and evolution, Teilhard realised
long before Moltmann and Wolfhart Pannenberg, must also be set in ‘the glow that suffuses everything here in the dawn of an expected new
day’. Teilhard was perfectly Christian in holding that it is theologically unacceptable to place the universe and life’s evolution outside of the
context of Christian hope. As for the centrality of kenosis, the theme is already there in Teilhard and Moltmann, but there have been many
other theological sources that have led me to highlight it. I have set these forth in my systematic theology of revelation. 3 I am convinced
then that the twin themes of kenosis and promise that underlie my theology of evolution will always be relevant to a Christian understanding
of the results of scientific discovery».

systematically to concentrate theology in Christology. The meaning of history and the possibility of truth really do depend on
Christ in his view. 1 But the christological concentration of his theology is reduplicative: everything depends on Christ, and his
truth depends solely on the resurrection viewed as a one-time happening or atomistic point in time. Thus the historical life of
Jesus is essentially anticipatory, pointing toward the resurrection. Without the resurrection it would have no meaning even as
history. Indeed his death on the cross made his life not only anticipatory but ambiguous. In themselves, then, both the life and
death of Jesus reveal nothing about Christ».

LA SINCRONIA LIBERATIVA E GLI IMPERATIVI
CRISTOCENTRICI
designation. The term is apt, I think, for the style of interpretation under discussion; it is unfortunate that it has already been adopted in an
authentic document. But since it has, it is hard to see how de Lubac's term can be accepted without an even more intolerable equivocation of
terminology.) 1 D. M. Doyle, HENRI DE LUBAC AND THE ROOTS OF COMMUNION ECCLESIOLOGY, in «Theological Studies», 60 (1999), p. 225-226; etiam in
«Internet» 2012, http://www.ts.mu.edu/readers/content/pdf/60/60.2/60.2.1.pdf: «The conclusion of Catholicism is a ringing endorsement
of "social Catholicism," properly understood. That is, although de Lubac warned against any purely mundane approach that would threaten
the transcendent character of the Church or reduce Christianity to a social program, he took pains to explain how social concern is integral
to Christian salvation: “There can be no question ... of merely transposing into the natural order what faith teaches us about the supernatural
world. ... But an anxiety to make a clear distinction between the two orders, natural and supernatural, must not prevent faith from bearing its
fruit. If in the upward direction a discontinuity between the natural and the supernatural is fundamental, there must be an influence in the
downward direction. Charity has not to become inhuman in order to remain supernatural; like the supernatural itself it can only be
understood as incarnate. He who yields to its rule ... contributes to those societies of which he is naturally a member. ... The service of his
brethren is for him the only form of apprenticeship to the charity which will in very truth unite him with them. ... Whatever freedom he may
justly claim for the details of his task, it is impossible for him not to aim at establishing among men relationships more in conformity with
Christian reality”. 1
Integrally connected with this "social Catholicism" for de Lubac is the mystery of the cross. The final paradox is that the
mystery of new life is bound up with the mystery of suffering and death. 2
Gustavo Gutiérrez cites de Lubac's retrieval of the historical and
social elements of Christian salvation as one of the sources that provide a foundation for liberation theology. 3 Liberation theology builds
upon the position that there are not two separated realms, the natural and the supernatural, with salvation belonging to the latter. Christian
salvation must have roots in this world. Christian unity builds upon the interpénétration of the unity of the human race and the common
destiny to which all are called».

American liberation school of theology. The most systematic effort thus far is offered by Leonardo Boff, a Brazilian Franciscan, in Jesus Christ
Liberator: A Critical Christology for Our Times, (Maryknoll, N.Y., Orbis Books, 1978). Liberation Christology, he: writes, stresses the historical
Jesus over the Christ of faith. The historical Jesus, not the Christ of faith, speaks to our situation today. He did not present himself as the
explanation of reality but as an urgent demand for the transformation of that reality (p. 274)».
3 R. P. McBrien, Catholicism, Minneapolis 1980, vol. I, p. 492: «In effect. what we think of Christ, how we understand the meaning of the
hypostatic union, the resurrection. and so forth is not primary: “Life is more important than reflection” (p. 157). Liberation Christology, therefore,
is not so much a contribution to our understanding of the nature and mission of Jesus Christ as it is a way of understanding the meaning and
demands of liberation. Liberation Christology has a prophetic, even messianic task i. e. to move Christians outside Latin America to hear the
painful cry of their oppressed brothers and sisters and to bring justice to those who fight to regain their freedom (p. 295)».

of salvation as a ‘gift’ of love which while flowing naturally from the one who is the Giver of Life--it is to be expected--is always received as
completely unexpected by the one who receives it being completely undeserving of that gift».

Crossroad Initiative – a Ministry of Dr Marcellino D’Ambrosio», http://www.crossroadsinitiative.com/library_article/757/Hans_Urs_von_Balthasar_Eulogy_de_Lubac.html :
«The beautiful is at once "image" and "strength", and is so par excellence in that perfect "figure of revelation" who is the Man-God. Faith
contemplates this figure and its contemplation is prayer. Von Balthasar has observed that wherever the very greatest works were produced
there was invariably "an environment of prayer and contemplation". The law is verified in an analogous manner even in the pagan domain:
"The proud spirits who never prayed and who today pass for torchbearers of culture vanish, with regularity, after a few years and are
replaced by others. Those who pray are torn by the populace that does not pray, like Orpheus torn by the Maenads, but even in their
lacerations their song is still heard everywhere; and if, because of their ill-use by the multitude, they seem to lose their influence, they
remain hidden in a protected place where, in the fullness of time, they will be found once again by men of prayer." Jesus, "indivisible Man-
God", is at once the object and model of Christian contemplation. This is the burden of the great work, still uncompleted, Herrlichkeit. The
idea is put into action in a book like The Heart of the World in which the heart of Jesus opens to us in a kind of lyrical explosion. It may be
seen even better perhaps in Prayer, an introduction to prayer that is at the same time a complete -- the most complete available -- outline
of the Christian mystery».
1 D. P. St. John, CONTEMPLATION AND COSMOS: Merton on Maximus and Teilhard, in «Internet» 2012,
http://teilharddechardin.org/old/studies/62-Contemplation_and_Cosmos.pdf: «In a 1966 letter to a Cistercian doctoral candidate studying
in Rome, Merton states that he is “very interested in the possible parallel between Soloviev and Chardin.”ii As late as 1967 in a review of
Henri de Lubac’s The Religion of Teilhard de Chardin, iii Merton expresses regret that de Lubac, an expert “in Origen and the Greek Fathers,”
while indicating “deep affinities” between Teilhard and this tradition, does not further explore that connection. Merton notes that “this is a
theme that could be profitably developed.”iv Anyone familiar with the life of Thomas Merton knows that the period from 1958-1961 was for
him one of rapid spiritual growth, intellectual expansion, and a renewed engagement with the world. It is our contention that several key
factors in this personal transformation affected Merton’s early perspective on Teilhard’s work.v Among the many factors that contributed to
this change, Merton’s deep encounter with the Byzantine and Russian Orthodox traditions must be considered prominent. An important
bridge with these traditions was Maximus the Confessor (c.580 - 662). Until recently largely ignored in the West, Maximus was given the title
of Confessor because of his strong defense of the Council of Chalcedon’s (451) affirmation of the two natures and wills (dyothelite) of Jesus
Christ. Maximus’ defense was unpopular among powerful monothelite proponents of his time and led to his torture, exile, and subsequent
death. The Incarnation was also central to his understanding of creation since the very nature of the universe in its relationship to the
Word/Logos prepares it for and anticipates the union of divine and human natures (and through Jesus all humans) in Christ’s person. For
Maximus and the Orthodox in general there never was a bare “natural” order separate from or opposed to the “supernatural” (and certainly
not a “fallen” world). It is the process of theosis or deification that affects the history or movement both of creation and humanity into a more
intense union with God (differentiation in union). Merton who himself remained Christocentric to the end, found in Maximus a way to affirm
the hidden universal presence of the Logos both in creation and humankind. And, as we shall see, he found the Maximian contribution to the
concept and practice of natural contemplation (theoria physike) a key to connecting the individual with the communal, the human with the
natural, and all both permeated by and within the divine».
