Recently, I sat in a circle at the Friends Meeting House in Coral Gables. We had gathered for an interfaith service and havdalah ceremony with Jews and immigrants preparing to bear witness the next day at the Detention Center of migrant children in Homestead. We held silence. For those of us non-Quakers in the room, it was hard for us.
Yet out of that silence, we heard from people who may not have been the first to speak. We heard from a Mexican-American woman who drove to Homestead from Texas. She told stories of the hate speech she’s endured the last couple of years, and the pain of being told to “go back to Mexico!” even though she’s an American citizen. We heard from a local woman who has shown up every week outside the Detention Center since it opened- to remind the children there that they are not alone or forgotten. She told a story of waving her hat at them from up on a ladder as the children in Homestead moved between buildings there—they often wave back at her with their hats. For her, that’s why she keeps going back: because the children there know others care and are advocating on their behalf. We heard from diverse clergy members. I shared a story about having been heckled in June by a fundamentalist Christian who saw my kippah while I was waiting to board a flight in Boston. We are living in a scary time of increasing white nationalism, xenophobia, and intolerance.
How do we stand up to hate? With love. Through solidarity with those who are being scapegoated. By bearing witness. We must do what we can to say treating immigrant children in this way is not okay. Separating children from their parents and adult guardians, detaining them indefinitely—this is not who we are. Children belong in homes and in schools, not in prisons. Our bus of 30 people from Temple Beth Sholom arrived on Father’s Day along with 12 rabbis, 5 synagogues and concerned people of all faiths from all over the country. The Jewish showing among locals and non-locals was pronounced.
Immigrant protesters asked us repeatedly throughout the weekend why our community cares so much about the indefinite detention of migrant and refugee children. One reason: Separation of children from guardians and
prison-like conditions resonate deeply because of the Holocaust. We know that long-term detention itself causes psychological trauma that lasts a lifetime. We will continue to show up until this practice ends and children are reunited with family members. Until we as a country learn to love the immigrant like ourself, none of us is truly free. - Leviticus 19:34

Sacred Connections
We are a vast and varied congregation. We range in age from newborn to 103 years old. We come from far-flung places like Tasmania and the Ukraine, and from local neighborhoods like Aventura and Hibiscus Island. Our religious origins range from Orthodox Jewish to Mormon. We are Jews by birth and Jews by Choice and non-Jews who dwell within our community. Our spiritual practices include yoga, meditation, running, daily Sh’ma and wrapping tefillan. We are married, widowed, partnered and single. Some of us have five children; others have none. Because of our great diversity, there can be no “one size fits all” spiritual offering that meets all our members’ needs all the time.
And yet, at Temple Beth Sholom, we are striving to honor who you are and satisfy your spiritual desires. This is how and why the “Unplugged” High Holy Day Service was created—to offer an alternative to our members who were looking for a different type of spiritual experience.
At the same time as we have worked to create two very different High Holy Day worship offerings, many of you have shared how much you wish the congregation would worship together as one. This year, we are developing a new Rosh HaShanah experience to fulfill that desire and bring our congregation together as one.
Many of you have told us how important your family’s Erev Rosh HaShanah dinner is. It has prevented you from attending services because it is too stressful to rush through dinner in order to get to Temple on time. Believe me, I know! This year, we will have only one evening service at 6:00 pm. This service will be appropriate for most 3rd graders and older. (Childcare will be offered by reservation for pre-schoolers to 2nd graders.) Our 6:00 pm service will conclude by 7:15 pm so that you can still share a holiday meal with family and friends if you wish. Additionally, we will provide a dinner table discussion guide for you to continue the conversation started by the sermon at home together.
On Rosh HaShanah morning there will be one new service at 9:30 am that combines the most beloved elements of our Traditional and Unplugged services in a new way. This service will conclude in time for families
and friends to enjoy lunch together. Youth Experience and Childcare will run parallel to the times of the Rosh HaShanah service for our children with opportunities for teens who do not wish to attend the Sanctuary service. (We encourage all children and teens who wish to attend the Sanctuary service and are able to actively participate to do so.) Children’s Services and Tashlich will be on Rosh HaShanah afternoon, as usual.
On Yom Kippur, we will once again offer two different spiritual opportunities for our congregation for all of you who have grown to love these special services. Our Unplugged Service will be at 8:45 am, followed by our Traditional Service at 11:30 am However, since so many of you bring your children to the Unplugged Service, we will only be offering a youth experience during the Traditional Service at 11:30 am only. (Childcare and programming will be available at 8:45 am for preschool age children—2nd graders at 8:45 am by advance reservation.) Children’s Services, Afternoon Services, Yizkor and N’eilah will take place, as they always have, in the afternoon.
Please make sure to review all these changes carefully in order to make your holiday experience meaningful and sacred. I hope that our new Rosh HaShanah offerings as One Congregation Together will be joyful and uplifting, and our Yom Kippur services will continue to be soulful and resonate deeply.
Thank you for sharing your hopes and desires with our clergy so that we may continuously strive to meet your spiritual needs. We are vast and varied, but we are also One. Thank you for making Temple Beth Sholom your spiritual home.

Dear Families,
We had the opportunity to deepen our practices and understandings of “Building Kehillah*” last year as together we celebrated receiving our KEHILLA APPROACH Trademark. Through our shared perspectives, we laid the groundwork for developing a sense of what interconnectedness could look like between family, community and “peoplehood.” We are a unique Jewish community. We come from over 20 different countries and speak multiple languages. Within this rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and customs, we are constructing our story of community beliefs, values, rituals, traditions and history. We are working to build relationships within our vibrant and diverse Kehillah, and we celebrate our similarities and differences daily!
As we continue our journey, we strive to nurture and support the development of strategies that will enable us to authentically live KEHILLA. We are growing sacred ground where we come together to learn, to welcome one another, and to take care of each other in authentic and meaningful ways. Our children are learning how to get their needs met and also how to help their peers get what they need. Learning and learning how to learn are important, but learning how to live is paramount! As a professional team, we know it is our responsibility to help our children become constructive members of a community. We hold ourselves to this important value, and we have the opportunity to be models for our children daily.
I am entering my 35th year as a Jewish Educational Professional and I can honestly say I have never seen such
a welcoming environment as ours. As I greet our children, families and staff each morning, I have the opportunity to observe how everyone from our youngest to our oldest community members appear to feel a sense of belonging to something bigger. There is a strong interconnectedness which has developed, and it is serving as the foundation for developing and sustaining relationships. Within our Ulam HaShalom (Welcome Center), you can see and feel
the physical and emotional space that has been created for developing relationships. This welcoming setting enables community members to listen to and dialogue with one another during various shared experiences. On any given day you can see parents gathered together sharing conversation and sipping coffee.
As educators, we understand that our communal life and practices revolve around two institutions, the home and community. We will continue to strive daily to support our families as they are developing their family’s Jewish identity and finding their life outside of the home in a community setting. When these two institutions are grounded in meaningful rituals and solid practices, they can become the venue for weaving sustainable values into the very core of our beings. Our KEHILLA APPROACH™ provides the framework for how we want to be together at TBSIS! We look forward to sharing a great 2019 / 2020 school year together!

Welcome…and welcome back! This is my first article for the HaKOL! I’ve spent my first 90 days getting to know staff and being warmly embraced by congregants, the Board and the community. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Senior Rabbi Gayle Pomerantz and all of our clergy, President Jeff Graff and the Board of Trustees, and every member of our staff for their support and assistance in helping me transition to this position.
Most of you may not know that I have been a longstanding member of TBS of approximately 20 years. I spent the last 25+ years as an executive traveling throughout Latin America, Canada, Europe and the US, primarily in the Financial Services industry.
I am honored and thrilled at the opportunity to strengthen my ties to the Temple and this community as its new Executive Director. I am confident that my strong business experience will be of great value, humbled by a new sense of purpose, connection and impact, but also recognize I have a lot to learn!
We have a wonderful and dedicated team here at TBS, of which I am proud to be a part. While you may think
that things slow down over the summer, as school is out, our clergy and staff remain hard at work supporting our bustling schedule of summer camp, preparing our beautiful Temple and campus for the High Holy Days and the new school year, membership renewal, as well as broader community activities including: Al-Anon, Seniors’ activities, Yoga and visiting the Homestead Child Detention Center.
The Temple also has the great pleasure of adding several members to the team. Please join me in welcoming Rabbi Loiben, who is responsible for reinvigorating our Youth Program and two new Fellows to Temple Beth Sholom: Social Justice Fellow Rachel Lilenbaum, and our new CLASP (Camp Leadership & Synagogue Professional) Fellow Rachel Synalovski.
We are all dedicated to you and this community! Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] or stop by and say hello! I look forward to being of service.

Twice each week, millions of newspaper readers around the country seek out his rich and uncommonly resonant voice. In a word, he connects with them. As we approach the year 5780, we reflect with gratitude on our philanthropic achievements of this past year. We look forward to an exciting season of activities and tzedakah together to meet the immediate needs of our community and to secure our future.
Due to the generosity of our 150 Circle of Giving families, we are able to be inclusive for all those who seek a place of belonging. In addition, we receive major contributions to a variety of projects within Temple Beth Sholom, which allows us to carry out our mission at a high level of excellence.
Over the summer, four generations of the Chaplin and Jove families gathered to dedicate The Harvey R. Chaplin Building in the Palm Plaza in honor of Harvey Chaplin’s special birthday. The message of this major endowed gift to our Glickstein Foundation exemplifies L’Dor v’Dor to ensure the future of our vibrant congregation.
We are delighted to announce the launch of Generations, an initiative which recognizes membership anniversaries of 25+, 50+ and 75+ years. We are honored to have more than 290 Generations households and we look forward to celebrating them at a reception on November 16.
You will find more information on pages 12-13 on our TBS Golf Open 2019, which takes place on
Monday, October 28. We ask our community to consider participating and/or recruiting sponsors, foursomes, and post-golf guests to join us at the awards ceremony and dinner. With your help, we will exceed last year’s fundraising results.
We also invite you to save Saturday, February 1 for SholomFest 2020 to benefit our Youth Campaign. This endeavor seeks to renovate our outdoor spaces and play areas, as well as replenish our in-demand scholarship funds for education, camp and Israel experiences.
Last year, we were inspired by the number of new donors to our High Holy Day Freewill Appeal. We increased donated dollars and our donor base increased by 70% compared to the year prior. Our new infographic on the facing page presents a compelling snapshot of the vast work performed at the temple and how every member is counted and matters. Participate in this year’s Appeal by submitting the pledge form on the facing page or by donating online at tbsmb.org/freewill.

One of the privileges of my job is the opportunity to go to Camp Coleman each summer. I love spending a week in the northeast Georgia mountains, singing and praying in the outdoor chapels, walking by the lake each morning, and even eating camp food. (Nellie’s Apple Brown Betty is famous across the URJ camping world!) I also get to flex some educator muscles in different and exciting ways as a camp faculty member, and I can collaborate with colleagues from across the southeast with whom I might otherwise not have the chance to interact. This helps strengthen my skills so that I return to Temple Beth Sholom from camp refreshed and with new ideas to infuse into our own educational program.
Perhaps one of the best parts of being at camp as an adult is watching the campers as they engage in Coleman life. Camp is perhaps the only place in contemporary society where one can immerse fully in being Jewish, and kids can “try on” their Jewish selves in unique ways. I experience immense joy watching hundreds of campers jump around singing Jewish songs and whole-heartedly throwing themselves into the steps of an Israeli dance. During programming, campers make astonishing connections with Jewish concepts they are learning, and they speak up proudly regarding their Jewish thoughts and knowledge. Prayer becomes a natural language at camp, and there is nothing quite like sharing Shabbat services on Friday night while the whole camp is dressed in white, welcoming the Sabbath bride as the sun begins to set over Lake Shalom.
Camp Coleman is a partner of Temple Beth Sholom; together, we aim to provide meaningful Jewish experiences for our youth throughout the entire year. I would love to bring even more TBS kids to camp with me next year. And although this summer is just starting to wind down, it is already time to think about summer 2020! I will be talking with you more about this incredible opportunity; in the meantime, check out Camp Coleman at www.campcoleman.org/
Welcome our CLASP FellowRachel Synalovski
Temple Beth Sholom is honored to have been chosen as one of 15 URJ congrega-tions to participate in the CLASP Fellow-ship program. CLASP (Camp Leadership and Synagogue Professional) is a bold and exciting initiative designed to bring the magic of URJ camping into congregations and to bring the children from those congre-gations into URJ camps. We have entered into an innovative partnership with URJ Camp Coleman, creating a model of programming that transcends boundaries in a collaborative, connected effort.
We are excited to introduce our new CLASP Fellow, Rachel Synalovski! Rachel is a New Jersey native and moved down to South Florida in 2015 to begin college. She attended Florida Atlantic University and earned a BA in Jewish studies and sociology. She has grown up in Jewish youth programming, as well as Jewish camp. Throughout college, Rachel spent her years working as a religious school teacher and camp staff member during the summers. She is excited to become a part of the Temple Beth Sholom family starting this month.
This position is generously funded by Shelly Rubin and Marshall Pasternack, the Marx Family Foundation, the Rabbi Gayle Pomerantz Forward Fund, and the Rabbi Robert Davis/Jo Asmundsohn Youth Scholarship Fund.

Temple Beth Sholom clergy visits congregants in hospitals, care facilities, hospices, and homes. Since the passing of the federal privacy laws (HIPAA) in 1996, our clergy is prohibited from finding out from an institution when one of our members is in the hospital or another facility. Please help us reach out to those in need. If you or someone you know would like a visit, please contact one of the clergy or Noemi Cortes, the clergy assistant; [email protected].
