ELU V’ELURabbi Gary Glickstein
This is my final Elu V’Elu column for our HaKOL.
I wrote my first column for our newsletter in 1985when I arrived at Temple Beth Sholom. For manyyears, we published a weekly edition. Eventually, wemoved to a bi-weekly schedule and then, with the ad-vent of the internet and social media, we went to ourmonthly format.
In the hundreds of thousands of words I have writtenover these 33 years, this sequence of sentences is mymost challenging: I am writing to say goodbye. I willnot be like the joke that says Jews say goodbye andnever leave. I am saying goodbye and I will leave.
I have already written to you about Joanie’s and myplans to spend time in Brooklyn with our Northeasternfamily next year. You understand that we intend to re-turn to South Florida after our Sabbatical period totake up residence once again here in our community. So, this goodbye is temporary. Nevertheless, it is emo-tionally difficult — even painful. This is particularlytrue after the incredible Shalom Rav events of thisyear. Shakespeare was right: “Parting is such sweetsorrow.”
By now you know that I love music, especially Broad-way and movie tunes. So, for this farewell message, Irewrote the lyrics to “Thanks for the Memory” by LeoRobin and Ralph Rainger from the movie “The BigBroadcast of 1938.” The original won the Oscar forBest Song in 1938 and became Bob Hope’s themesong throughout his career.
Thanks for the memoriesThe bar and bat mitzvot, the converts who would floatThe brisses, baby namings, weddings here and moreremoteHow lovely it’s beenThanks for your devotionFor laughing at my jokes, for traditions that I brokeFor caring for me even after some sermons that I spokeHow loyal you are
We will once more reconnectAfter I’ve time to reflectAnd if I may interjectNo tears, no fussHooray for usThanks for the sadness tooFor sharing all your pain, for letting me remainFor sticking with me even when I bordered on profaneThank you so muchThanks for the blessings tooFor kisses and for hugs, all the love that tugsOn my heart and makes my soul dance the jitterbugYou’re here in my heart.
I know this is corny, but I just do not know how else toconvey my love and deep appreciation for all youhave given me.
So, I end with the original words of another song:“Shalom” from “Milk and Honey” by South Florida’sown Jerry Herman.
Shalom, ShalomI find Shalom The nicest greeting you know;It means a million lovely things, Like peace be yours, Welcome home. And even when you say goodbyeIf your voice has“I don’t want to go” in it,Say goodbye with a little “hello” in itAnd say goodbye with shalom.Shalom and L’hitraot -

President’s Message
Soon my two-year term as your President will come to a
close. In June, Jeff Graff will assume the leadership of our
congregation. It has been such a privilege to be your lay
leader, and I have cherished every minute of it.
I would like to share with you the key milestones of our last
two years:
• Your Board of Trustees has worked diligently to ensure a
smooth clergy transition with the retirement of Rabbi
Glickstein on June 1. Our Shalom Rav events have given us
the opportunity to celebrate the rich legacy of our Senior
Rabbi and Joanie over their 33 years of service and
devotion to Temple Beth Sholom. I hope you will join us on
May 11–12 at the Retirement Shabbat -- our final Shalom
Rav event -- to show your love and appreciation to them.
• Rabbi Pomerantz was chosen, after an extensive national
search, as our new Senior Rabbi beginning June 1. What a
monumental event to celebrate only the third Senior Rabbi
in our 75-year history! Please mark your calendars for the
official installation of Rabbi Pomerantz on Friday,
November 9.
• Rabbi Ethan Bair from Reno, Nevada, was selected in a
second national search to complete our clergy team. Rabbi
Bair begins on July 1.
• The new Temple Beth Sholom Innovative School (TBSIS)
was launched this year beginning with kindergarten and
first grade classes. In August we will add a second grade.
Our Foundation School and Infant/Toddler program are
now included in the Innovative School program.
• We hired Mark Flaxer as our Executive Director in
November 2016 and Barbara Shimansky as our Director of
the School for Living Judaism in June 2017.
• Contracts were renewed with Rabbi Davis, Rabbi
Morrison, Cantor Segal, Mark Baranek, and Margie Zeskind.
• Emeritus agreements were signed with Rabbi Glickstein
and Cantor Haas.
• As Hurricane Irma approached in September, we closed
Temple Beth Sholom to Shabbat services for the first time
ever. Fortunately, we were spared any serious damage.
The staff worked tirelessly to ensure that we were open and
ready for High Holy Days services.
• Our Legacy Endowment Campaign reached the halfway
mark of $9 million towards our $18 million goal.
• On a personal level, I am proud to now serve on the North
American Board of Trustees of the Union for Reform
Judaism (URJ) where, along with fellow past president
Shelley Niceley Groff, I can continue to engage in the
important work of our reform movement in North America,
Israel, and around the world.
We are such a strong and vibrant congregation. I hope you
are as proud as I am to call Temple Beth Sholom your
spiritual home. We continue to dream and be innovative
so we can always remain in the forefront of Reform
Judaism. We keep our five core values -- spirituality, repair
of the world, lifelong education, Israel, and community --
close to our hearts so they can guide our actions.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to Temple
Beth Sholom.
May we continue to grow together from strength to
strength.

Dear Families,
Eleven and a half years ago, I made the decision to join theTemple Beth Sholom community as the Director of EarlyChildhood Education. I was first introduced to this amazingcommunity when I worked at the Center for the Advancementof Jewish Education (CAJE) consulting with and supportingthe Jewish early childhood professionals in South Florida forthirteen years. I worked closely with Rowena Kovler and thenDr. Francine Herold, who collectively led the FoundationSchool for 18 years prior to my tenure.
I was here when the Foundation School first becameaccredited by the National Association for the Education ofYoung Children back in 2006 under Dr. Francine’s leadership. We are now entering our fourth accreditation phase! I walkedthe first steps with Francine as she opened the lens forlooking at the educational practices in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and thinking about how these approaches could influencecurriculum at the Foundation School. We are now on ouramazing journey toward deepening our practices andunderstandings of the social constructivist approaches asdeveloped in Reggio Emilia.
My decision to leave CAJE was after the untimely death of Dr.Francine, who passed away in her seventh year here. Myheart was heavy and open to continuing the educationaljourney that she set into motion. I fully knew that thiscommunity had a progressive mindset (still does) and visionto fully work for the current generation and intentionally planfor the generations yet to come.
When I shared with my CAJE co-workers that I was leaving togo to Temple Beth Sholom, they said communities change allthe time, and Rabbi Glickstein won’t be there forever. Iremember telling them that whatever time I had to work with a
visionary like Rabbi Glickstein would be a professional gift of alifetime.
Rabbi Glickstein has steered and supported me throughout myfirst eleven years here. His ability to see beyond his perspectivesand open up venues for deep thinking and new realms ofpossibilities has supported my professional and personal growth. He has been our Temple Beth Sholom champion for children! With his guidance, we have been able to act upon our goals andfollow our mission and educate our children in the ways webelieve are best. Our professional team learns and studies withsome of the best educational leaders in the world. We travel toexcellent school settings throughout the United States andbeyond. We embrace our learning and have been inspired byRabbi Glickstein’s life-long learner practices. He has set the stage, and we are soaring to higher and higher levels of excellence!
In closing, I know that my decision to join the Temple BethSholom community was one of the best decisions I have made inmy lifetime. I feel privileged and blessed daily! I will forever carryRabbi Glickstein’s teachings in my heart and soul. His teachingsprovide the foundation and inspiration for my future growth. As Ilook to the future I know that our beautiful community, rooted insustainable values, will continue to flourish. Rabbi Pomerantz’sleadership will continue to take our community on a meaningfuljourney that will be far reaching for generations to come!
I am proud to be a part of the Temple Beth Sholom L’Dor V’Dorchain!

A Message from Our ShlichaAmit Perchuk
“And sometimes the party is overThe lights go out, the trumpet saysgoodbye to the violins…To wake up tomorrow morning with a new song in our hearts to sing it with strength,to sing it with pain.To hear the flutes in the free breeze and to start -- from the beginning”
(Ve’Lifamim Ha-Hagiga Nigmeret – Hakol Over Habibi –And sometimes, the party is over)
WOW. I can’t believe that I’m writing my last article for thecommunity. How can I even describe in words everythingI’ve been through over the last two years. Being your IsraeliShlicha (emissary) these past two years has been the mostamazing time of my life.
As a 22-year-old Israeli, I left everything behind and begana new chapter in my life. I joined the Camp Colemancommunity, where I found a home and a family over thesummer, and then was welcomed by my beloved TempleBeth Sholom community. I got to see how special Israel isto each and every one of you and how valuable ourcountry is in your hearts and minds. I have loved sharingwith you about diversity in Israel, Israeli society, my IDFexperience, holidays and traditions in Israel, and my specialchildhood in Israel and in the Jewish world. This was an
amazing opportunity for me, and I’m very proud to be partof the Temple Beth Sholom community, my home awayfrom home.
So many of you shared great moments with me! Cookingand eating together at “Taste of Israel”, singing at Fridaynight and High Holy Days services, and listening myspecial stories from Israel … there’s no way I would be ableto explain how welcoming you are as a community andhow deeply you have made me feel at home. I am gratefulfor these two years here with you, the clergy, and mysupervisor, Mark Baranek. This has made me realize what Ireally want to do in my life: Jewish education. The bond between Israel and its citizens to the Jewishpeople all around the world, especially in the U.S., is soimportant and is one of the strongest assets we have as anation. We should all be committed to keeping thisconnection strong.
Thank you, Toda Rabba! For being a home, a family, and atemple for me. This experience has been unforgettable andmeaningful.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Shalom Rav
Thank you!
These past months have been a bittersweet time of nostalgia, celebration and looking forward for our family and for this congregation. Our hearts have filled to overflowing by the “Shalom Rav” events over the past four months. When you read the list of names above of all the individuals who worked and volunteered on our behalf to make theseevents outstanding, please consider the hours and days each person spent in envisioning, planning and executing the
celebrations. Each one exemplifies the sense of community and commitment that makes Beth Sholom the warm, welcoming congregation we all cherish.
TODA RABA to all of you who helped to make “Shalom Rav” an unforgettable time for both of us. Whether you chaired or worked on a committee, performed or spoke at an event, attended a function or wrote a beautiful note,
we are humbled by and grateful for your participation and commitment.
L’hitraotRabbi and Joanie
HaKOL MAY 2018 Page 10
Dear Rabbi Glickstein,
I opened up my HaKOL today and read your Elu. Youaddressed two questions; why and when, as popularquestions amongst the congregation. It got me thinkingthat these two questions never crossed my mind when itcame to your retirement. I remember the first time I heardthe “R” word in regards to your future, perhaps nearly adecade ago and not wondering why or when, but rather, what would I be able to achieve while still having you as aleader, mentor, and overall guide for reference. I wonderedto myself: Would I be able to continue to share my mostmeaningful life moments with you; would you be able tocontinue watching me grow as I created the family Idreamed of; would I be able to make you proud and fulfillall the lessons in which you instilled in me over the majorityof my life?
I never shared my stories publically in the HaKOL oranywhere else during this year of celebrating you andJoanie. Perhaps I didn’t feel as though they were special toanyone else but me, or really because I couldn’t decidewhich story to choose; which phase of my life; which lessonyou’ve taught me. However, whether shared publicly ornot, it is important to me at the very least to share with youthe influence you’ve had on my life from a very young age.
My very first memories paint a forever clear image of youcautiously walking across Silverman Hall, avoiding flyingballs, rowdy grade schoolers, and who knows what else inorder for you to get to your office. At the time, it seemed likesuch an odd design flaw — requiring the rabbi to walkthrough chaos and interrupt our nonsense play?! However, nothing could have created a better foundation forlong-standing relationships with you. As young children, seeing you every day, created a realness to your presencethat allowed all of us to connect with you on a deeper levelas we grew and matured.
I can then fast forward to my bat mitzvah and sharing thebima with you. At my service, you discussed our sharedpassion for theatre and spoke of your background at UCLA.Full circle, I am so excited to be in the audience Sundayafternoon as you get to strut your stuff! Years later, I vividlyremember my confirmation year and being huddledaround the couch in your office, discussing the mostintimate aspects of young adulthood on a weekly basis.Your ability to be so candid, open, and honest with usimmature teenagers in a safe space provided so muchcomfort, and trust.
We then traveled to Israel together on the first ever TBS NoExcuses Tour after my class’s scheduled NFTY trip wascanceled due to Middle East Conflict. I will never forget thattrip. During one of our first days on the bus, I overheard you
inviting another peer to sit in the back of the bus and“chew the fat.” I spent days thinking about this and wasmortified at this strange Israeli tradition of chewing the fat,yet I also yearned to share that time with you. After days ofcontemplating, I approached you, ready and willing to takemy seat in the back and chew the fat as well ... thankfullyyou calmed me with the meaning of that and joined me inconversation.
As it was time to get married, I sighed with relief that youwere still our rabbi and had not yet retired. I obliged you topromise to marry my husband and me. In our premaritaldiscussions, you taught us about marriage, the days whenit’ll be 50/50, 80/20, 90/10, 70/30, and so on. You taught usabout how to make a marriage work and how you hope tomarry couples who will stay together and be a part of thecommunity. We are celebrating nine years of marriage thismonth and 18 years as a couple. Your words to us havestayed present to this day. When our daughter was born, Iwas once again thrilled that I made it in time for you toname her! We’ve since been able to welcome two moresons to our family under your tenure and leadership, one ofwhom you also named, and our youngest son recently hadthe honor to be named by Rabbi Pomerantz, our incomingSenior Rabbi. Now, we are a family of five, with two boysand one girl, just like you and Joanie, raising our family inthis often complicated Miami Beach world, within thecomfort of our communal bubble, so much of which youbuilt.
This is a long way of saying so, but Rabbi Glickstein, I cannever thank you enough for the leadership and guidanceyou’ve provided to me and my family — both the family Icame from and the family I’ve built - the last 25 years. Youcreated a home for us at Temple Beth Sholom, and thathome allowed us to grow and flourish in ways that wouldnot have been possible. You gave us your smile, your hug, your charm, your knowledge, and your words, whichsomehow have always been apropos to life’s givenchallenges and have guided us through.
I am still looking forward to sharing my life’s mostmeaningful moments with you that are to come. I am sograteful that I’ve had you as such a consistent mentor in mylife to watch me grow into my own and welcome childreninto this life. I wish you all the best in your upcomingretirement, and am looking forward to celebrating you withthe year’s remaining events.
Thank you–a million thank-yous.
Gratefully,
Rina Bass

Four years ago as I was sitting in High Holy Day servicesreflecting on my personal conduct during the previousyear, I felt very strongly that I had not given as much as Icould have. After reviewing the service opportunities listedin one of the brochures at my seat, I checked the box that expressed myinterest in PACT(People Acting forCommunity Together). Not long after, RabbiDavis contacted meand asked if I wouldattend an upcomingPACT meeting. I havebeen involved eversince.
PACT is the largest interfaith grassroots organization inMiami-Dade County. With 40 diverse congregations andtwo universities, PACT represents more than 50,000congregants. The organization has had astoundingsuccesses over the last 30 years. Some of thoseaccomplishments include the creation of clinics in public
schools, the retraining and hiring of a local work force, theelimination of out-of-school suspensions, the destruction ofcrack houses, the increased funding for Miami DadeCounty’s affordable housing trust fund, civil citations forjuvenile offenders, and the advancement of gun-violenceinitiatives in some of our more challenged neighborhoods.PACT’s work is thoughtful and deliberate and has improvedour community in many measurable ways.
On May 21, 2018, we are going to celebrate this rich historyof social justice. Temple Beth Sholom has been a drivingforce in PACT since its inception and is pleased to have theopportunity this year to share our synagogue with PACT’smembership as we come together to celebrate ourvictories.
