Testing season is up-
on this school year. The
Illinois Standards As-
sessment Test (ISAT) will
be given the week of
March 8th-11th. The
Illinois Measure of Aca-
demic Growth in English
(IMAGE) will be given the
weeks of March 8th-
18th. The Iowa Test of
Basic Skills (ITBS) will be
given the week of May
2nd-6th.
It is very important
during these times to
ensure that our children
are getting ade-
quate sleep and
nutritious meals.
Healthy minds and
bodies will help our
children perform their
best on these upcoming
tests. We look forward
to another year of stellar
performances from our
children!
Bridge School is very
honored this year to
have a special guest
speaker at our 8th
grade graduation cere-
mony. CPS CEO Mr. Arne
Duncan will be visiting
our school on June 14th
as our special guest
speaker at this im-
portant event. The
Bridge School family is
proud to have him visit
our wonderful school.

Did you know that the Bible was translated into 1,324 languages and dialects of the world? Eve-
ry year there are about 10,000 copies of the Bible printed and sold all over the world.
Did you know that the thickest book of the world is the Encyclopedia of the Chinese Ming Dyn-
asty? This work consists of 10,000 different books. It was hand written by 2,000 Chinese writ-
ers over a 5-year period.
Did you know that the smallest book ever is 1 by .08 mm? This mini gadget was created by a
Polish engineer from Katowice – Zygmunt Szkocny.
Did you know that the largest book in the world is 1.5 meters tall and after opening it is over 2
meters wide? Even though it only has 112 pages, it weights 110 pounds! It is a photo album
showing the Bhutan Kingdom. Printing one copy of the book costs $1,000.
March is a month when all the oral presentations and debates will be concluded during library
classes. After spring break, students in grades 3-8 will start working on their puppet shows.
They will have to write a modern version of a fairy tale or some other classic literature piece (eg.
Romeo and Juliet). When the scripts are ready, we will begin preparing for performing this play
with puppets.
The librarian wishes everyone a nice and pleasant spring break!

Well spring training has started this year and the Cubs have
reported to camp without their star Sammy Sosa who was
traded to the Baltimore Orioles For 2B Jerry Hairston Jr. I’m
sure though, you have heard of the recent acquisition of RF
Jeromy Burnitz who hit 37 home runs and had 110 RBI’s last
year for the Colorado Rockies. Also we will have our star
shortstop Nomar Garciaparra for a full season so hopefully, in
this case, change is good. Here is a projected opening day
lineup for the Chicago Cubs in 2005.
Start your engines! Students in rooms 210 and 212 tested
their problem solving and engineering techniques. Given a stand-
ard set of materials, groups were required to construct a fan-
powered car. The student groups then raced their cars to find the
classroom winner. Congratulations to David Niedojadlo and Noel
Pagon from room 212 and Michael Szynalik and James Herrity
from room 210 for being the classroom fan-car champions! Stay
tuned for more fan car racing action!

Bridge School Students have been making good use of their time in the Computer Lab us-
ing Study Island. This will take a large portion of our time until after our initial Test
Week. After Spring Break, upper grade students will be creating their own PowerPoint
Presentations and younger students will be creating presentations using KidPix. Older stu-
dents will also receive their email ID’s and be asked to practice good e-mail etiquette in
sending email to other students and teachers. Acceptable use policies will be in effect at
all times. (That means you have to use appropriate language in your e-mails to others) In
many or our computer classes, students will start to submit their assignments electronical-
ly (by e-mail).

On Friday, February 18th , the primary grade
classrooms at Bridge celebrated 100 days of
school. Beautiful classroom art projects de-
picting units of “100” brightened the hall-
ways and classrooms. The projects helped the
children understand the concept of 100 using
hands-on activities. Only 80 school days left
this school year.

Our Dream Field Trip

Arts in Resources in Teaching Comes To 001
By Mrs. Cutler
Volume 7, Issue 1
Environmental art projects brighten Room 001 classroom walls.
Chris Guerrero received this autograph from Dr.
Robert Ballard on a Bridge bulldog.
After Mr. Naughton presented some information about the Titanic to us, the sev-
enth and eighth grade classes went to the Field Museum to meet the man who dis-
covered the location of the Titanic. World renowned scientist Dr. Robert Ballard
was the first one to use the new under water technology that helped him discover
the ship in 1985.
He also told us about the other discoveries that he has made, such as those in the
Black Sea. We learned that most sea water contains oxygen because of a world
wide oceanic circulatory system. However, the Black Sea is an exception. The
surface layer of the Black Sea contains oxygen but further down there is none. Dr.
Ballard explained that since animals can not live without air, there are no living
things at the bottom of the Black Sea to eat at the ancient wooden ships that have
sunk there. So he thinks that inside these wrecks might be found the bodies of
crew members almost perfectly preserved after more than a thousand years. Sci-
entists may even be able to conduct autopsies to see what they ate for their last
meal! On his next expedition there, Dr. Ballard plans to find out.
We found it most interesting that he has explored the depths of the ocean. If we
keep studying Science, just imagine what we could do! Maybe, just maybe, YOU
could find a new world!
A couple of weeks ago my class was very fortunate to get to participate in a pilot
Arts in Resources in Teaching program. Two artists came in and read a story
called The Jumping Mouse. The artists told the students to pay close attention to
the environment that they saw in the pictures as the story was read to them. They
also wanted the students to remember each of the characters in the story.
When the story was finished each of the students was given a piece of
paper and told to draw one of the environments and put a couple of the characters
in the environment. The very unique part of the project was that when they were
finished drawing their pictures, the students were then able to fill in their pictures
with all different kinds of materials like: crushed foam pieces, sand, plastic discs,
shredded paper, tubes, tile pieces, etc. to give their pictures great texture. The
students had a great time.
Dr. Ballard talks to students at the Field
Museum.
On Tuesday, March 1st , “Helen Keller” visited K-8 Bridge students. An ac-
tress from National Historical Perspectives for Children portrayed the part of
the blind, deaf, and mute Helen Keller. Helen Keller acted out her life history
from her early sickness as a child to her later years as a teacher of the disa-
bled. A question and answer period followed the performance which allowed
the students to ask Helen Keller questions. The event was generously funded
by the Bridge PTA. Editor’s Note: Joining the PTA helps fund programs like these and many more. It only costs $5.00 to
join the Bridge PTA and help provide quality supplemental programs and activities for our children.

Dear Parents, At the end of the day, school personnel are required to clear the playground area of all chil-dren. This is done to ensure that all students are accounted for, either being picked up by an adult or by walking home. School personnel have instructions to bring all remaining children back into the school for pick-up. Parents, please keep your children off the equipment until we are sure “no child has been left behind”. Thank-ing you in advance for your usual fine coopera-tion.

Benjamin Franklin visited the seventh graders on Friday, February
18th. This was his second annual visit to Bridge. Benjamin dis-
cussed his life, achievements and involvement in creating the
United States of America. The students were interested to hear
about his many discoveries like how electricity is conducted and
inventions such as bifocals and the odometer. Also, Franklin cre-
ated the first lending library and volunteer fire department. It was
an informative presentation and perfect closure to our study of the
American Revolution and creation of the constitution.
